Description

Title: Reveal profile
DESCRIPTION The present invention relates to a reveal profile and the manufacture thereof. The term reveal, also called jamb, day-side or revel, is defined as the inner face (or side) of a wall around an opening therein, in particular a door or window opening.
A reveal profile comprises a reveal panel, usually of gypsum board covered with cardboard, which extends transversely onto the (inner) wall plane from a (window) framework (casing). In known arrangements, adjoining (or in line with) the plane of the wall, the reveal panel of cardboard-covered gypsum board is provided with a connection profile, for example of extruded plastic, which firstly is connected to the card board -covered gypsum board and secondly to a wall connection strip. For example, the strip comprises fleece, mesh or perforated sheet material, for forming or supporting of a bridging layer (such as a plaster or stucco layer) between the reveal panel and the nearby wall that adjoins the reveal panel. After the application of stucco against the wall connection strip, as a result of combining a cardboard-covered gypsum panel, a connection profile and a wall connection strip, a tight taut corner is obtained between the reveal panel and the (stucco) plane of the wall.
The adhesive bonding between the connection profile and the gypsum board is troublesome, due to the poor adhesion properties of gypsum. In a known configuration, the cardboard-covered gypsum board on its top face is provided with a slot in (the centre of) the gypsum layer, in which an upstanding connection ridge or rib of the connection profile is inserted and adhered. However in practice, due to the brittleness of the gypsum and to the small layer thickness, often the gypsum layer breaks or cracks between the slot and the surface. For this reason, a configuration is proposed by the present invention in which the connection profile is attached better and more reliable to the card board -covered gypsum board (without any risk of breaking of the gypsum).
It is noted that usually use is being made of card board -covered gypsum board. However, hereinafter is referred to a protective layer, since the invention is not limited to gypsum board having protective layers of cardboard (although cardboard is often used as a protective layer). Where gypsum is mentioned in the context of the present invention, the term will be considered to include all similar materials.
The method for the manufacture of a reveal profile according to the invention comprises the following steps:
- providing a reveal panel of gypsum board, comprising a gypsum layer that on both sides is provided with a protective layer (for example, a cardboard layer);
- providing grooves in the gypsum layer at the top face of the reveal panel directly underneath the protective layers;
- pressing inwardly of the portions of the protective layers, underneath which the grooves are provided in the gypsum layer;
- providing a (e.g., extruded) connection profile that is arranged and configured to be applied over and to be adhered against the pressed-in portions of the two protective layers;
- mounting the connection profile over the pressed-in portions of both of the protective layers and adhering the connection profile against the portions (and hence not against the gypsum, which itself has poor adhesive properties);
- providing a wall connection strip which has been or is attached (during the execution of the method, or only afterwards) to the connection profile, said wall connection strip is intended and arranged for forming or supporting a bridging layer (in particular a stucco layer) between the reveal profile and the wall adjoining the reveal profile.
By applying the method according to the invention it is achieved that the connection profile is not adhered to the gypsum material of the cardboard-covered gypsum board, but on the cardboard layer (or protective layer of another material), by means of adhering of the connection profile against the cardboard layer, without - a prerequisite for reveal profiles - protruding outside of the surface of the cardboard-covered gypsum board. By this method, there is no need for providing a slot in the middle of gypsum layer, thereby avoiding the risk of breaking, whilst nevertheless an excellent adhesive bonding is effected between the connection profile and the cardboard- covered gypsum board.
Preferably, in the top face of the reveal panel an slanting (miter) face is provided, prior to, simultaneously with or after the application of the grooves underneath the protective layers of the gypsum layer. The grooves are preferably formed having a slanting flank, along which the respective portions of the protective layers are pressed inwardly at an angle.
In advance, the wall connection strip may already be joined with the connection profile, that is to say prior to carrying out the above mentioned method steps, for example, by forming a single integral unit, or by attaching to the connection profile by adhering or welding. However, the wall connection strip may also be attached to the connection profile during or after the above mentioned method steps, for example by adhering or welding.
Furthermore the invention also comprises all reveal profiles, made with the method according to the invention.
The present invention comprises a reveal profile comprising a reveal panel of gypsum board formed by a gypsum layer which on both sides is provided with a protective layer, the gypsum layer at its top face being provided with grooves directly underneath the protective layers, wherein portions of the protective layers, where the grooves are arranged into the gypsum layer, are pressed inwardly, wherein furthermore a connection profile is provided over the pressed-in portions of the two protective layers and adhered thereto, and wherein a wall connection strip is provided, which is attached to the connection profile, which wall connection strip is intended and arranged for forming or supporting a bridging layer between the reveal profile and a wall closely adjoining the reveal profile. Preferably, a slanting face is provided on the top face of the reveal panel, prior to, simultaneously with, or after the application of the grooves underneath the protective layers of the gypsum layer. Preferably the grooves directly underneath the protective layers comprise a slanting flank so that the respective portions of the protective layers are more or less able to be inwardly oriented at an angle. Optionally the wall connection strip and the connection profile form one integral unit with each another or are attached to each other by adhering or welding, for example.
The invention also comprises a connection profile for carrying out the method according to the invention, wherein the connection profile is arranged to be applied over and adhered against the pressed-in portions of the two protective layers. Optionally the connection profile forms a single integral unit with the wall connection strip or is attached thereto by adhering or welding. The invention will now be further discussed on the basis of the following figure description.
Figure 1 shows the general structure of a known reveal profile;
Figures 2 - 6 illustrate the method according to the invention and also show an embodiment of a reveal profile and a connection profile according to the invention;
Figure 7 shows an alternative connection profile.
Figure 1 shows a reveal profile 1, comprising a reveal panel 2 of (cardboard covered) gypsum board or plate, comprising a layer of gypsum 3, which on both sides is provided with a protective layer 4 made of cardboard or optionally of non-cardboard. The reveal panel cross-extends onto the inner plane 6 of a wall 7 from a (window) framework (casing) 5. In a known embodiment, the reveal panel 2 from cardboard- covered gypsum board is provided with a connection profile 8 adjoining (or in line with) the inner plane 6 of the wall 7. For example, the connection profile is made of extruded plastic. On the one hand the connection profile is connected to the cardboard-covered gypsum board (that is by means of a connection ridge 9 which fits into a groove which is provided in the top face of the reveal panel 2), and on the other hand the connection profile is connected to a wall connection strip 10, for example made of fleece, mesh or perforated sheet material, for forming or supporting of a bridging layer, such as a stucco layer 11, between the reveal panel 2 and the nearby wall 7 that adjoins the reveal panel 2. After the application of stucco 11 against the wall connection strip 10, as a result of combining a gypsum cardboard panel 2, a connection profile 8, 9 and a wall connection strip 10, a taut corner is obtained between the reveal panel 2 and the (stucco) plane 6, 11 of the wall 7. As indicated above, in practice the well-known configuration is susceptible to cracking or breaking of the gypsum layer 4 along the connection ridge 9, where the wall thickness of the (per se brittle) gypsum layer is small.
The Figures 2 - 6 illustrate the method according to the invention and also show a reveal profile and a connection profile according to the invention. The same reference numerals have been used as for the corresponding components in figure 1. In figures 2 - 6 the manufacture of a reveal profile is shown schematically, wherein a reveal panel 2 is provided of gypsum board, comprising a gypsum layer 3, which on both sides is provided with a protective layer 4. Figure 2 illustrates how a grooved (profile) face 13 is provided at an end of the reveal panel, in the top face thereof, by means of e.g. a profile cutter 12. Among other things, the milled grooved face includes two grooves (or cavities) 14 in the gypsum layer 3, milled directly underneath each of the protective layers 4.
By means of the profile cutter 12, the gypsum board 3 is also provided with a slanting face 15, simultaneously while applying the grooves 14 underneath the protective layers 4 of the gypsum layer 3. The grooves 14 are formed having a slanting (front) flank 16. As a result of the milling and cutting of the gypsum material, the underneath bared portions 17 of the protective layers 4 can be pressed inwards at an angle, as shown in Figure 3. Furthermore in this embodiment, a pair of grooves 18 is provided for receiving of two ridges of the connection profile, which hereinafter is discussed in more detail.
Figure 3 illustrates how the portions 17 of the protective layers 4, underneath which the grooves 14 in the gypsum layer 3 are provided, are being pressing inwardly, for example by means of pressure rollers 19.
Figure 4 shows a connection profile 8, which is arranged to be applied over the pressed-in portions 17 of both of the protective layers 4. The application of the connection profile 8 is effected by providing adhesive (glue) 20 in adhesive channels 21 between the inner ridges 22 and outer ridges 23 of the connection element, and subsequently by mounting the profile 8 over the pressed-in portions 17 of the two protective layers 4 and by adhering it against them. The inner ridges 22 are thereby inserted into the grooves 18, while the outer ridges 23 are covering the inward slanting portions 17 of the protective layers 4. The adhesive 20 ensures a solid and reliable bonding between the connection profile 8 and the portions 17 of the protective layers 4, thereby ensuring a solid and reliable bonding of the connection profile 8 on the top face of the gypsum board 3, without being hampered by the poor adhesion properties of the gypsum of the gypsum layer 3, so that it is not necessary (for example, as shown in Figure 1) to affect the structure of the gypsum layer 3 by providing a groove. The result is shown in Figure 5: a reveal panel 2 having a firm and reliable bonded connection profile 8 by means of the adhesive layer 20 between the adhesive channels 21 and the portions 17 of the protective layers 4 serving as adhesive surfaces.
In the illustrated embodiment as shown in figures 4 and 5, the connection profile 8 comprises an inclined plane 24, which is used as a connecting surface for a wall connection strip 10, which has been or is connected to the connection profile 8. The wall connection strip 10 is intended and arranged for forming or supporting a bridging layer between the reveal profile 1 and a wall 7 adjoining the reveal profile (see figure 1). Prior to the steps illustrated in the Figures 2 - 5, the wall connection strip 10 is attached to the connection profile 8 (for example, by forming a single integral unit therewith or by bonding thereto through adhering or welding). Alternatively as proposed in Figures 2 - 6 after the connection profile 8 is mounted against the reveal panel 2 (the situation of Figure 5), the connection strip is attached through adhesive bonding or welding to the connection profile.
After the connection profile 8 is mounted against the reveal panel 2, as illustrated in Figure 6, a layer of adhesive 25 is provided on the inclined connecting surface 24 of the connection profile 8, with which the wall connection strip 10 is adhered to one side.
Thus, the Figures 2 - 6 illustrate the manufacture of a reveal profile according to an embodiment of the invention, comprising a reveal panel 2 of gypsum board formed by a gypsum layer 3, which on both sides is provided with a protective layer 4. The top face of the reveal panel 2 is provided with grooves 14 in the gypsum layer 3, immediately underneath the protective layers 4. The portions 17 of the protective layers 4, where the grooves 14 are provided in the gypsum layer, are pressed inwards. A connection profile 8 is arranged over and adhered against the pressed-in portions 17 of the two protective layers 4. Furthermore, a wall connection strip 10 is provided, which is attached to the connection profile 8, which wall connection strip 10 is intended and arranged for forming or supporting a bridging layer between the reveal profile 1 and the wall 7 adjoining the reveal profile. A slanting face 15 is provided on the top face of the reveal panel 2. The grooves 14 comprise a slanting flank 16 so that the respective portions 17 of the protective layers 4 are able (more or less) to be inwardly oriented at an angle. In the embodiment shown (see Figure 6) the wall connection strip 10 is bonded together with the connecting profile by adhering. As an alternative method of bonding, welding can be used, for example. The embodiment of the connection profile 8 shown in the Figures 2 - 6 is arranged to be mounted over the pressed-in portions 17 of both of the protective layers 4 and to be adhered against them, so that a firm and reliable connection is formed which does not affect the mechanical strength of the gypsum layer 3. Optionally the connection profile 8 forms a single integral unit with the wall connection strip 10 or is able (by means of the inclined connecting surface 24, as shown in the embodiment) to have the wall connection strip 10 being attached to it, by adhering or welding.
Figure 7 shows an alternative connection profile, which is provided with an integral more or less resilient clamping tab (strip) 26. The tab is connected with the connection profile 8 by means of a narrowed passage (portion) 27. The clamping tab 26 is rotatable around the passage 27, enabling the free end 28 to be pressed and clamped under an edge 29. As illustrated in the figures 7a - c, the clamping tab 26 enables attaching the wall connection strip 10 onto the inclined connecting surface 24 of the connection profile 8 without adhering or welding, by clamping of the wall connection strip 10 between the free end 28 and the edge 29.
It is noted that from DE29916403U1 a configuration for a reveal profile with a reveal panel 2 of gypsum board and a connection profile 8 is known. However, the arrangement of the grooves 13, 14 directly underneath the protective layers of the gypsum board of the reveal profile is not known from this document, so that the connection profile according to the present invention provides a much better and more reliable adhesive connection with the reveal panel. Due to the milled grooves in the top face of the gypsum board, the protective layers can be pressed inwardly in such a way, that the profile with its outer sides is flush (level) with both surfaces of the gypsum board. But above all - see p. 1 I. 28-30 - is thereby achieved, that the profile is adhered against the (inwardly pressed) (outside and also inside) surface of both of the protective layers 4, instead of against the (rough and relatively brittle) gypsum surface, which has poor adhesive bonding characteristics.
It is suggested in DE29916403U1 to adhere the profile directly against the gypsum surface, and to increase the adhesion (in itself not sufficient) by "zusatzlichem vertackern mit ca. 10 mm long verzinkten Klammern". Additionally, the gypsum material is "mit einem geeigneten Tiefengrund versehen beim verkleben um einen der drei Teile stabilen Grund fur den Kleber zu erhalten." Consequently, it is implicitly indicated in DE29916403U1 that adhering of a profile with adhesive directly onto the transverse surface of the gypsum plate is troublesome. In the configuration according to the invention, this problem of the poor adhering properties of a gypsum surface is solved by providing the gypsum board of the reveal profile with such a transverse grooved face (see figures), that the ends 17 of the protective layers 4 (of which the surface has much better adhering properties than the bare gypsum surface) can be folded inwardly and therefore can be used as an adhesive surface. In addition, the connection profile is provided with such a shape, that it does not protrude outside (the projection of) both outer surfaces of the gypsum board.
