Definitions
- the present invention relates to an operating device for supplying power to a recessed ceiling light, in particular a downlight, which is to be used as a so-called emergency light.
- GB2464166A describes a housing of an operating device for supplying a lamp, in particular a recessed ceiling light, which has a geometric configuration that facilitates installation of the housing in places with limited space, ie in particular in the false ceiling area that is usual for mounting a recessed ceiling light.
- the housing is thinner in one end area than in the other area.
- a holder for an accumulator is attached inside the housing.
- a light as an emergency light requires the use of a correspondingly designed control gear, which is designed to implement the emergency light function. This operating device is then able to recognize an emergency independently or on the basis of an external signal and then activate the lighting means of the light accordingly.
- the control gear also has an independent power supply source in the form of an accumulator to ensure that the emergency light is still available even in the event of a complete failure of the general power supply.
- any normal light as an emergency light by adding an emergency light control gear to the light.
- an emergency lighting control gear is generally larger than a control gear provided for normal operation due to the fact that it also has a rechargeable battery, the additional accommodation of a further control gear in or on the housing of a luminaire can certainly be associated with difficulties.
- the present invention relates in particular to the case where the luminaire itself is designed to be so compact that the normal operating device also has to be removed from the luminaire. This is the case, for example, with so-called downlights, which have small dimensions.
- a downlight is understood to mean a recessed ceiling light which is arranged in the opening of a suspended ceiling in such a way that it emits light directed downwards from the ceiling, but with its housing or other components into the space between the suspended ceiling and protrudes into the soffit of the area to be illuminated.
- Such downlights are available in a wide variety of embodiments, with a pot-shaped or funnel-shaped reflector generally being provided, with the light source being arranged in the bottom area of the reflector.
- the reflector defines a light exit opening through which the light is emitted towards the underside.
- the reflector is then delimited by a peripheral ring-like flange area which bears against the underside of the suspended ceiling and thereby conceals the remaining gap between the inner peripheral surface of the mounting opening and the outer periphery of the reflector.
- the downlight is inserted into the opening from below until the flange rests against the underside of the suspended ceiling.
- a defined position of the downlight on the ceiling is then implemented using special locking mechanisms.
- downlights of this type can be made very compact, although embodiments are known in which, for example, the circular light emission opening has a diameter of only about 100 mm.
- a connection to the power supply components must also be established.
- the control gear it is already known not to arrange the control gear directly on the components of the downlight that are responsible for light emission, but instead to make it available as a separate component, which is then connected to the downlight via a detachable cable connection.
- the control gear must first be connected to the power supply, placed in the space between the suspended ceiling and the soffit and coupled with the downlight. Only then can this be arranged on the ceiling in the manner described above.
- the present invention is therefore based on the task of proposing a novel solution which makes it possible to use compactly designed downlights as emergency lights in a relatively simple manner and to keep the installation effort for this within reasonable limits.
- the solution according to the invention is based in particular on a special configuration of the emergency lighting operating device such that it can be arranged in a simple manner in the ceiling cavity. Furthermore, the device has been optimized in such a way that the replacement of the accumulator, which has to be carried out regularly for safety reasons, can be carried out relatively easily and quickly despite poor accessibility.
- the operating device with the aid of which the luminaire is to be given an emergency light function, can be connected to the luminaire via a detachable cable connection and can be arranged in a ceiling cavity.
- the operating device has a device housing which is designed to hold at least one rechargeable battery, with a rechargeable battery compartment being provided for storing the rechargeable battery, which is accessible from the outside.
- the design of the device housing allows the accumulator to be changed without tools without opening or removing a housing part of the device housing.
- an operating device for supplying a recessed ceiling light, in particular a downlight, which is to be used as an emergency light, the operating device being designed to be connected to the light via a detachable cable connection and to be arranged in a ceiling cavity, wherein the operating device on Has a device housing which is designed to hold at least one battery, and wherein, according to the invention, the device housing has a battery compartment for storing a battery, the battery compartment having a hollow-cylindrical receiving area, and the battery compartment being accessible from the outside, so that the battery can be removed without opening of the device housing can be removed without tools and reinserted.
- the device housing is preferably designed to hold a rechargeable battery with so-called button contacts, so that it can be changed easily and without tools if necessary.
- An advantageous development of the invention relates to a special configuration of the shape of the device housing, which makes it easier to insert the operating device into the ceiling cavity. It is provided here that the device housing extends along the elongate battery compartment for storing the battery, with one end region of the device housing being angled.
- the angled configuration of the device housing makes it possible for it to be inserted through a narrow ceiling installation opening into the intermediate ceiling area, despite its elongated design, which is a mandatory requirement due to the accumulator.
- An angle in the range between approximately 10° and 45° has proven to be particularly advantageous here.
- the angled end area of the housing preferably has connections for connection to another operating device, ie a normal operating device, and to a cable leading to the light.
- the end area of the device housing opposite the angled end area is preferably slightly widened in order to accommodate connection terminals for connecting the operating device to power supply lines and/or lines for signal transmission in this end area. When viewed from above, this leads to an L-shape of the device housing, which enables the arrangement or accommodation of all essential components and, despite everything, allows for relatively easy assembly.
- the actual electronics for controlling the light as an emergency light are then housed within the device housing. It can be what is known as an electronic ballast or a converter, which in turn usually has an elongated shape and is then preferably arranged parallel to the accumulator compartment.
- a particularly advantageous embodiment consists in providing the operating device required for implementing the emergency light function already in combination with a conventional operating device.
- Both operating devices are preferably connected to one another via a cable connection, with both a power supply input and a power supply output of the second operating device being connected to the emergency lighting operating device and thus only the emergency lighting operating device being connected to the luminaire via a cable connection got to.
- Both operating devices can then be arranged in the ceiling cavity and coupled to the downlight via a single cable connection, which then has to be attached to the ceiling installation opening in the final assembly process. Overall, this simplifies the effort involved in mounting, even with downlights that are designed to be very compact.
- FIG. 1 first shows the various components or components that can be used to implement a downlight with an emergency lighting function.
- the actual downlight itself i.e. the structural unit that contains the light sources and is responsible for generating and emitting the light
- it will be a light source based on LEDs. Since relatively high temperatures usually occur during operation when LEDs are used as light sources, the heat must be dissipated to avoid damage to the LEDs.
- a heat sink 120 is arranged on the rear side of the reflector 110 for this purpose.
- the reflector 110 has on its underside through which the light exit opening of the downlight 100, has a ring-like, outwardly protruding flange area 111, which is intended to rest against the underside of the ceiling construction and in particular conceals any gap that may remain between the inner circumference of the mounting opening and the outer circumference of the reflector 110.
- the downlight 100 is installed or fastened with the aid of a so-called installation ring 200, which is anchored to the ceiling installation opening by means of suitable latching or contact elements 210.
- this mounting ring 200 is first anchored to the ceiling, and then the downlight 100 can be attached to this mounting ring 200 and locked with it. This is done, for example, via a corresponding bayonet lock or a comparable latching or screw connection, such mounting rings 200 and their use being well known from the prior art.
- the downlight 100 is to be designed very compactly, such that, for example, the diameter of the light exit opening of the reflector 110 is only in the range of approximately 100 mm.
- a general operating device 80 for normal operation of the downlight 100 which contains, for example, a converter that converts the supply voltage provided by the general power supply into a suitable operating voltage for the LEDs.
- connection between the normal operating device 80 and the downlight 100 can be taken into account here, if necessary, with the connection between the normal operating device 80 and the downlight 100 then being made by means of a detachable cable connection.
- the downlight 100 is coupled to a cable 150 which has a corresponding plug 151 at its end applied to the downlight 100 which is designed for coupling to a plug or a socket 161 of a supply cable 160 .
- this cable then led to the normal operating device 80, so that a connection between the downlight 100 and the operating device 80 could be established in a simple manner by coupling the two plugs 151 and 161.
- this second operating device 10 is intended to ensure that in the event of an emergency, for example a failure of the general power supply, the downlight 100 is operated with a specified power despite everything and that a basic supply of lighting is accordingly ensured that it enables people to orient themselves at least in the area illuminated by the downlight 100 and, if necessary, to leave the building or the area.
- the emergency lighting operating device 10 internally has further electronic components for implementing this emergency lighting function.
- an energy supply source that is independent of the general power supply is also provided in the form of an accumulator 50, which ensures light is emitted as part of the emergency lighting function at least for a certain period of time.
- the emergency lighting operating device 10 according to the invention was optimized in particular with regard to the question of the arrangement of the various elements and ultimately also the connection to the downlight 100, as will be described in more detail below.
- a first aspect of the invention relates to the question of the design of the housing 20 of the emergency lighting operating device 10 and the arrangement of the various components on it or therein, the design of the housing being explained below with reference to FIG Figures 2 to 6 should be explained in more detail.
- the housing 20 must on the one hand be used to hold the electronic components, ie the electronic ballast or the converter for emergency light operation and also the accumulator 50 .
- the housing 20 must allow the emergency lighting operating device 10 to be coupled to the other devices and the power supply in a suitable, as simple as possible manner.
- a first special feature of the inventively designed device housing 20 is that - as in particular in the 2 , 4 and 5 recognizable - a receiving area or receiving compartment 21 for holding the accumulator 50 is designed in such a way that the accumulator 50 is accessible from the outside and can be easily changed.
- the design of the Device housing 20 that the accumulator 50 can be removed without tools without opening and / or removing parts of the housing and reinserted, which is particularly advantageous given the limited space in the ceiling cavity, in which ultimately storage of the operating device 10 takes place.
- the so-called battery compartment 21 is designed in such a way that a battery 50 with so-called button contacts 51, 52 can be arranged.
- a first end area of the accumulator compartment 21 is designed in such a way that the corresponding end area of the accumulator 50 with the minus contact 52 can be inserted into an approximately hollow-cylindrical receiving area.
- the plus contact 51 of the accumulator 50 is then inserted into the opposite area by pivoting the accumulator 50 into the correct position.
- the accumulator 50 can be inserted into the accumulator compartment 21 and installed there like a simple, rod-shaped battery, whereby--as already mentioned--this is made easier even in the case of very tight spatial conditions by the fact that there is no further covering.
- the rechargeable battery 50 is reliably and permanently secured to the operating device housing 21 . It is provided that the connection of the plus contact 51 of the accumulator 50 to the corresponding connection of the operating device 10 is initially interrupted at the factory by an insulating tab 55, which can then be easily removed or pulled out during assembly in order to close the accumulator 50 activate.
- connection terminals 45 are provided on an end region 22 of the housing 20, via which the operating device 10 is connected on the input side to the lines for the power supply and/or signal transmission. These connection terminals 45 are located on the side of the corresponding end of the converter 40, so that the device housing 20 is slightly widened here and, overall, for example in 2 recognizable L-shape.
- connection terminals 45 is as in 6 shown covered by a foldable or pivotable cover 25, so that this Area is easily accessible and with little effort, the input-side connection of the operating device 10 can be performed.
- the angle ⁇ shown here is preferably in the range between about 10° and 45° and makes it easier to bring the emergency light operating device 10 into the area provided for its storage, even with very narrow installation openings and low heights of the ceiling cavity.
- this angled end area 23 is used to mount further connections 46, via which a connection to the normal operating device 80 and the downlight 100 then takes place.
- the two operating devices 10 and 80 are not each connected separately to the downlight 100, but rather the connection is made only as part of a single cable connection.
- the normal operating device 80 is therefore connected both to its input 81 and to its output 82 via additional cables 84 and 85 (see Fig 1 ) is connected to the emergency lighting control gear 10, with the connection here--as already mentioned--being made in the angled end area 23.
- the cable 160 ultimately intended solely for the connection to the downlight 100 then leads from the end region 23 of the emergency lighting operating device 10 to the plug 161 already mentioned, via which the connection to the cable 150 of the downlight 100 takes place.
- the downlight 100 and its components for the power supply are assembled as shown in FIGS Figures 7a-7e .
- the normal operating device 80 - as in 7 b shown - also inserted through the opening 251 in the ceiling cavity.
- connection cable 160 still protrudes through the opening 250 .
- the mounting ring 200 already mentioned at the outset is then attached to the ceiling 250 via this and locked there, as is already known from the prior art (see Figure 7c ).
- the various components are arranged as shown in 8 is shown. It can be seen here that even with very low installation heights, that is to say with only a small distance between the suspended ceiling 250 and the raw ceiling 255, it is nevertheless possible to arrange the various components. Due to the special design of the housing of the emergency lighting operating device and the way in which the operating devices 10, 80 are connected to one another and to the downlight 100, installation as a whole can be carried out relatively easily and conveniently in accordance with the above explanations.

Description
The present invention relates to an operating device for supplying power to a recessed ceiling light, in particular a downlight, which is to be used as a so-called emergency light.
Larger lighting systems, which are used to illuminate public buildings or building complexes in particular, usually have what is known as an emergency lighting function for safety reasons. In the event of an emergency, which leads to a failure of the general lighting, for example, the luminaires of the emergency lighting system are activated and assume an operating status corresponding to the emergency lighting status. For this purpose, they are operated, for example, with a predetermined brightness provided for this emergency, on the one hand to ensure a certain basic lighting and on the other hand to enable people to leave the building or building complex safely.

Although it is well known to use individual lights exclusively for the emergency lighting system, in which case these lights are not active during normal operation of the lighting system, it is now preferable for the emergency lighting function to be taken over by lights which are switched on during normal operation behave in a completely normal way like all other lights in the lighting system. That means these emergency lights can also while the system is in operation, commands can be transmitted from a central control unit, with the help of which the light output of the lamp can be adjusted in line with the other lamps. Such control commands are often transmitted according to the DALI standard, for example.
The use of a light as an emergency light requires the use of a correspondingly designed control gear, which is designed to implement the emergency light function. This operating device is then able to recognize an emergency independently or on the basis of an external signal and then activate the lighting means of the light accordingly. As a rule, the control gear also has an independent power supply source in the form of an accumulator to ensure that the emergency light is still available even in the event of a complete failure of the general power supply.
In principle, it would be conceivable to design a single operating device in such a way that it can operate a luminaire both in normal operation and in emergency lighting mode, but for reasons of efficiency, a separate operating device is usually used to implement the emergency lighting function, which is designed as described above and, for example, with is provided with an accumulator. This is then installed on or in the luminaire in addition to the control gear provided for normal operation.
In principle, it is therefore possible to use any normal light as an emergency light by adding an emergency light control gear to the light. This is not a problem, for example, if the housing of the luminaire has sufficient space to accommodate another control gear. However, since an emergency lighting control gear is generally larger than a control gear provided for normal operation due to the fact that it also has a rechargeable battery, the additional accommodation of a further control gear in or on the housing of a luminaire can certainly be associated with difficulties.
The present invention relates in particular to the case where the luminaire itself is designed to be so compact that the normal operating device also has to be removed from the luminaire. This is the case, for example, with so-called downlights, which have small dimensions.
In the present case, a downlight is understood to mean a recessed ceiling light which is arranged in the opening of a suspended ceiling in such a way that it emits light directed downwards from the ceiling, but with its housing or other components into the space between the suspended ceiling and protrudes into the soffit of the area to be illuminated. Such downlights are available in a wide variety of embodiments, with a pot-shaped or funnel-shaped reflector generally being provided, with the light source being arranged in the bottom area of the reflector. The reflector defines a light exit opening through which the light is emitted towards the underside. Usually, the reflector is then delimited by a peripheral ring-like flange area which bears against the underside of the suspended ceiling and thereby conceals the remaining gap between the inner peripheral surface of the mounting opening and the outer periphery of the reflector. For installation, the downlight is inserted into the opening from below until the flange rests against the underside of the suspended ceiling. A defined position of the downlight on the ceiling is then implemented using special locking mechanisms.
As already mentioned, downlights of this type can be made very compact, although embodiments are known in which, for example, the circular light emission opening has a diameter of only about 100 mm. When installing the downlight, not only does it have to be attached to the ceiling itself, but a connection to the power supply components must also be established. In this context, it is already known not to arrange the control gear directly on the components of the downlight that are responsible for light emission, but instead to make it available as a separate component, which is then connected to the downlight via a detachable cable connection. In this case, the control gear must first be connected to the power supply, placed in the space between the suspended ceiling and the soffit and coupled with the downlight. Only then can this be arranged on the ceiling in the manner described above.
This assembly process becomes more complicated if it is also desired to use the downlight as an emergency light. As described above, another operating device, namely the emergency lighting operating device, must also be arranged in the difficult-to-access ceiling cavity and coupled to the power supply, the normal operating device and the downlight. This leads to problems in particular when both the available space is tight and the accessibility to the space due to the compact design of the downlight and the resulting only small ceiling installation opening is limited. So far, no satisfactory solutions have been made available for this case, with the help of which a simple installation of the lamp as a whole could be implemented.
The present invention is therefore based on the task of proposing a novel solution which makes it possible to use compactly designed downlights as emergency lights in a relatively simple manner and to keep the installation effort for this within reasonable limits.
The object is achieved by an operating device for supplying power to a recessed ceiling light, which has the features of claim 1 . Advantageous developments of the invention are the subject matter of the dependent claims.
The solution according to the invention is based in particular on a special configuration of the emergency lighting operating device such that it can be arranged in a simple manner in the ceiling cavity. Furthermore, the device has been optimized in such a way that the replacement of the accumulator, which has to be carried out regularly for safety reasons, can be carried out relatively easily and quickly despite poor accessibility.
According to the invention, it is provided here that the operating device, with the aid of which the luminaire is to be given an emergency light function, can be connected to the luminaire via a detachable cable connection and can be arranged in a ceiling cavity. In this case, the operating device has a device housing which is designed to hold at least one rechargeable battery, with a rechargeable battery compartment being provided for storing the rechargeable battery, which is accessible from the outside. In particular, the design of the device housing allows the accumulator to be changed without tools without opening or removing a housing part of the device housing. According to the present invention, an operating device is therefore proposed for supplying a recessed ceiling light, in particular a downlight, which is to be used as an emergency light, the operating device being designed to be connected to the light via a detachable cable connection and to be arranged in a ceiling cavity, wherein the operating device on Has a device housing which is designed to hold at least one battery, and wherein, according to the invention, the device housing has a battery compartment for storing a battery, the battery compartment having a hollow-cylindrical receiving area, and the battery compartment being accessible from the outside, so that the battery can be removed without opening of the device housing can be removed without tools and reinserted. In this case, the device housing is preferably designed to hold a rechargeable battery with so-called button contacts, so that it can be changed easily and without tools if necessary.
An advantageous development of the invention relates to a special configuration of the shape of the device housing, which makes it easier to insert the operating device into the ceiling cavity. It is provided here that the device housing extends along the elongate battery compartment for storing the battery, with one end region of the device housing being angled.
The angled configuration of the device housing makes it possible for it to be inserted through a narrow ceiling installation opening into the intermediate ceiling area, despite its elongated design, which is a mandatory requirement due to the accumulator. An angle in the range between approximately 10° and 45° has proven to be particularly advantageous here. The angled end area of the housing preferably has connections for connection to another operating device, ie a normal operating device, and to a cable leading to the light. Furthermore, the end area of the device housing opposite the angled end area is preferably slightly widened in order to accommodate connection terminals for connecting the operating device to power supply lines and/or lines for signal transmission in this end area. When viewed from above, this leads to an L-shape of the device housing, which enables the arrangement or accommodation of all essential components and, despite everything, allows for relatively easy assembly.
The actual electronics for controlling the light as an emergency light are then housed within the device housing. It can be what is known as an electronic ballast or a converter, which in turn usually has an elongated shape and is then preferably arranged parallel to the accumulator compartment.
A particularly advantageous embodiment consists in providing the operating device required for implementing the emergency light function already in combination with a conventional operating device. Both operating devices are preferably connected to one another via a cable connection, with both a power supply input and a power supply output of the second operating device being connected to the emergency lighting operating device and thus only the emergency lighting operating device being connected to the luminaire via a cable connection got to. This leads to a particularly convenient installation of the luminaire, since only the emergency lighting control gear has to be connected to the lines of the general power supply and, if necessary, to signal transmission lines. Both operating devices can then be arranged in the ceiling cavity and coupled to the downlight via a single cable connection, which then has to be attached to the ceiling installation opening in the final assembly process. Overall, this simplifies the effort involved in mounting, even with downlights that are designed to be very compact.

The downlight 100 is installed or fastened with the aid of a so-called installation ring 200, which is anchored to the ceiling installation opening by means of suitable latching or contact elements 210. As described below, this mounting ring 200 is first anchored to the ceiling, and then the downlight 100 can be attached to this mounting ring 200 and locked with it. This is done, for example, via a corresponding bayonet lock or a comparable latching or screw connection, such mounting rings 200 and their use being well known from the prior art.
In the application under consideration, the downlight 100 is to be designed very compactly, such that, for example, the diameter of the light exit opening of the reflector 110 is only in the range of approximately 100 mm. In this case, it is difficult to arrange the further electronic components for operating the light sources of the downlight 100 on the downlight 100 itself, which is why provision is made for these components to be outsourced. This is initially a general operating device 80 for normal operation of the downlight 100, which contains, for example, a converter that converts the supply voltage provided by the general power supply into a suitable operating voltage for the LEDs. External control signals such as dimming commands or the like can be taken into account here, if necessary, with the connection between the normal operating device 80 and the downlight 100 then being made by means of a detachable cable connection. For this purpose, the downlight 100 is coupled to a cable 150 which has a corresponding plug 151 at its end applied to the downlight 100 which is designed for coupling to a plug or a socket 161 of a supply cable 160 . In previous solutions, in which no emergency light function was provided, this cable then led to the normal operating device 80, so that a connection between the downlight 100 and the operating device 80 could be established in a simple manner by coupling the two plugs 151 and 161.
In the present case, it is now provided to use a second operating device, generally provided with the reference number 10, with the aid of which the downlight 100 is to be given an emergency lighting function. As already mentioned at the outset, this second operating device 10 is intended to ensure that in the event of an emergency, for example a failure of the general power supply, the downlight 100 is operated with a specified power despite everything and that a basic supply of lighting is accordingly ensured that it enables people to orient themselves at least in the area illuminated by the downlight 100 and, if necessary, to leave the building or the area.
Accordingly, the emergency lighting operating device 10 internally has further electronic components for implementing this emergency lighting function. In addition, however, an energy supply source that is independent of the general power supply is also provided in the form of an accumulator 50, which ensures light is emitted as part of the emergency lighting function at least for a certain period of time. The emergency lighting operating device 10 according to the invention was optimized in particular with regard to the question of the arrangement of the various elements and ultimately also the connection to the downlight 100, as will be described in more detail below.
As already mentioned, the housing 20 must on the one hand be used to hold the electronic components, ie the electronic ballast or the converter for emergency light operation and also the accumulator 50 . On the other hand, the housing 20 must allow the emergency lighting operating device 10 to be coupled to the other devices and the power supply in a suitable, as simple as possible manner.
It is preferably provided that the two operating devices 10 and 80 are not each connected separately to the downlight 100, but rather the connection is made only as part of a single cable connection. This is also advantageous in that one of the operating devices, in particular the emergency lighting operating device 10, is now able to actively suppress the supply of the downlight 100 by the normal operating device 80, for example, and instead to control the downlight 100 as part of an emergency operation . Otherwise there would be a risk that both operating devices 10 and 80 would attempt to operate the light sources of the downlight 100 in competition at the same time.
