PROCESS FOR PRODUCING A FLEXIBLE COMPOSITE PRODUCT PROVIDED WITH A LAYER OF WOOD
* * * * *
The invention is directed at the wood processing sector, and in particular relates to a process for producing a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood.
Conventionally, wood, which is a symbol of sturdiness, has always been used in the building, and in particular in the furnishing, sector, to make solid strong furniture guaranteeing durability.
However, over the years it has become increasingly necessary for wood to be used also in other fields, exploiting its particular aesthetic appearance and wide range of its grains and colors to provide the items produced with an increasingly attractive finish.
For example, it was recently decided to produce also leather items, such as belts, bags, etc., in wood and consequently to use wood advantageously also in the fashion, gift and fancy goods, automobile and similar sectors.
The peculiarity of the wood used in these sectors is that of being flexible, in order to be able to produce "soft" items, without detracting from the aesthetic appearance of the wood.
Technologies are currently known that are capable of making wood veneer flexible, supporting it with a backing layer in paper, fabric, nonwoven or plastic material, making it pliable, capable of being thermoformed, padded and even stitched.
Patent no. 1233469 having Martinuzzo Alberto as applicant discloses a
method for producing flexible multi-ply sheets from an external veneer in high quality wood or vegetable tissue.
This method provides for application of the veneer to a thin flat sheet made of flexible and thermoformable plastic material by means of the interposing of a layer of thermoformable adhesive material to form, under pressure, a flat laminate with external surfaces devoid of raised areas and/or projections.
The prior art method also provides for the application, under pressure, to the entire face of the sheet of plastic material of the flat ply thus obtained, opposite the face to which the veneer is applied, of a cut of fabric through interposing of a layer of thermoformable adhesive material.
However, this method of treating the wood for the purpose of making it flexible presents some limits and disadvantages.
The degree of flexibility achieved by the wood is due solely to its coupling with the sheet of plastic material.
The flexibility is therefore only due to the intrinsic properties of the backing material, but the physical properties of the wood are not modified by the process.
Therefore, the flexibility of the wood is disadvantageously only guaranteed in one direction, i.e. in the direction of its grain. The sheet of composite material can be curved, flexed and bent only parallel to the direction of the grain of the wood, while in the direction against the grain it tends to break or crack.
This disadvantage leads to a limitation in the application thereof: for example, leather items must be stitched taking into account the direction
of the grain of the wood and therefore, besides producing numerous scraps, the final aesthetic effect is partly limited.
The surface of the wood can only be dry cleaned or with the use of damp cloths, but cannot be washed completely in water, as the wood is not treated and isolated to allow it to come into direct contact with running water.
Prior art flexible wood, and the products obtained therewith, cannot be wet completely and immersed in water, without being subject to permanent deformation and irreparably compromised and damaged.
The object of the invention is to define a process for producing a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood that guarantees the maximum flexibility thereof, meaning that it can be stitched and bent in all directions and that the flexible wooden product and the final item produced therewith can be washed completely.
Another object of the invention is to define a simple, rapid and inexpensive process that uses safe materials and respects the environment.
These objects are achieved with a process for producing a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood, comprising the steps of: - providing sheets of wood with a thickness of 6/10 of mm;
- gluing said sheets onto a textile fiber backing by means of a first water- resistant adhesive;
characterized in that it comprises the further steps of:
- spreading a second vinyl adhesive in aqueous dispersion on the surface of said sheets applied to said backing;
- sanding said sheets coated with said second adhesive;
- applying a two-component varnish comprising a mixture of synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments to the surface of said sanded sheets, wherein said varnish is obtained by mixing a finishing enamel with a catalyst based on polyisocyanates and a thinner based on a mixture of halogen-free organic solvents.
In particular, said first adhesive is of polyurethane or vinyl type, water- resistant and thermofusible; while said second adhesive is based on vinyl acetate resins.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, said two-component varnish is obtained by adding one part of catalyst to seven parts by volume of finishing enamel composed of a mixture of synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments and diluting the product obtained with 20% of thinner.
Advantageously, said method comprises, after the step of gluing said sheets onto said textile fiber backing, the further step of calibrating the sheets of wood obtained, taking them to a thickness of 4/10 of mm.
In a further embodiment of the invention, said method comprises, after the step of gluing said sheets onto said textile fiber backing, the further step of gluing said sheets of composite wood obtained to a sheet made of flexible material.
In particular, said flexible material is chosen from hide, leather, cuoietto leather, eco-leather and fabric.
Moreover, said step of gluing said sheets of composite wood to a sheet made of flexible material comprises the use of universal glue.
The invention also relates to a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood, comprising:
- a sheet of wood with a thickness of 4-6/10 of mm;
- a textile fiber backing;
- a layer of water-resistant adhesive interposed between said sheet and said textile fiber backing;
characterized in that it further comprises:
- a layer of vinyl adhesive in aqueous dispersion applied to the surface of said sheet;
- a layer of two-component varnish applied to said layer of vinyl adhesive, wherein said two-component varnish comprises a mixture of synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments, and is obtained by mixing a finishing enamel with a catalyst based on polyisocyanates, and a thinner based on a mixture of halogen-free organic solvents.
The present invention also includes an item produced with a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood as claimed.
The process for producing a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood according to the invention has many advantages, essentially due to the properties of the materials and of the products applied to the surface of the wood, i.e. the vinyl adhesive and the two-component varnish that act in synergy with each other.
The vinyl adhesive used is already widely used with different functions to those of the present invention in the wood and paper industries, prevalently for mounting furniture, gluing tables, frames and wooden structures and in generic common carpentry work.
In the application according to the invention it is instead advantageously used as base coat to prepare for spreading of the subsequent layer of two- component varnish.
Said vinyl adhesive advantageously ensures a very high degree of flexibility of the article without any risk of damaging or breaking the sheet of wood.
The article even reaches a degree of flexibility as high as 98%.
In particular, the flexibility is guaranteed in both the direction of the grain of the wood, but surprisingly also in the opposite direction, against the grain.
Consequently, the applications and aesthetic effects that can be created are endless and even more attractive.
Moreover, the two-component varnish spread on the vinyl adhesive advantageously produces an opaque effect similar to smooth leather, improves the tactile and optical properties of the backing, and therefore of the sheet of wood on which it is spread, and makes the backing resistant to chemical and physical agents, such as scratches.
Even more advantageously, said varnish completely isolates the layer of wood, protecting it from water and humidity: the product thus obtained can therefore be washed, obtaining maximum cleanliness and is therefore suitable to be used in a wide variety of applications, even to produce fashion and leather items.
Moreover, the thermofusible polyurethane or vinyl adhesive interposed between the sheet of wood and the textile fiber backing is water-resistant: the whole composite product is therefore resistant to running water and
can be immersed totally therein, without the risk of the layers becoming detached.
The advantages of the invention will be made clearer below with the description of a preferred embodiment of the process, provided by way of non-limiting example, and with the aid of the drawings, wherein:
- Figs. 1 and 2 represent, schematically and with proportions intentionally deformed for reasons of clarity, respectively in a cross section and in a partly sectional axonometric view, a flexible composite product provided with a layer of wood produced with the process according to a possible embodiment of the invention;
- Figs. 3-5 represent, in an axonometric view, some objects produced with the article obtained with the process according to the invention.
With reference to Figs. 1 and 2 there is illustrated a flexible composite product 1 provided with a layer of wood.
The product is in the form of composite sheet and substantially comprises a sheet of wood 2, a textile fiber backing 3 and a sheet of flexible material 7.
In the text, the wording sheets of wood 2 is intended without distinction as veneers, both sliced and rotary cut, edge-banding, reconstituted, inlays, etc... obtained from one or more species of wood.
Advantageously, said sheet of wood 2 has a thickness of around 6/10 of mm; said textile fiber backing 3 is a fabric or a NW nonwoven fabric; said flexible material 7 can be of various kinds according to application requirements, and for example chosen from hide, leather, cuoietto leather, eco-leather and fabric.
Between said sheet of wood 2 and said textile fiber backing 3 there is interposed a layer of a first adhesive 4, made of polyurethane or vinyl, thermofusible and water-resistant.
Between said textile fiber backing 3 and said sheet of flexible material 7 there is instead interposed a layer of universal glue 8.
On the sheet of wood 2 there is provided a layer of a second adhesive 5 of vinyl type in aqueous dispersion.
Said vinyl adhesive 5 is based on vinyl acetate resins.
Excellent results have been obtained using as vinyl adhesive 5 a product marketed by the company EMMEBI INTERNATIONAL, called EMMEVIL M-51 BV.
This product is characterized by medium viscosity, setting speed with a wide range of adhesion possibilities, and the appearance of the dry film of glue is slightly opalescent.
On said vinyl adhesive 5 there is then provided a layer of two- component varnish 6.
The two-component varnish compound 6 to be applied essentially comprises:
- a finishing enamel based on synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments;
- a catalyst based on polyisocyanates;
- a thinner comprising a mixture of halogen-free organic solvents.
A first example of an optimal preparation expressed by volume of said two-component varnish 6 is given by seven parts of finishing enamel and one part of catalyst, the product obtained being diluted with 20% thinner.
A second example of preparation expressed in weight of said two- component varnish 6 is:
700 g of finishing enamel + 100 g of catalyst + 160 g of thinner.
Optimal results were obtained using a two-component varnish 6 composed of products marketed by the company MANKIEWICZ GEBR. & Co.
In particular, the components that form said varnish are marketed with the following names:
- finishing enamel composed of a mixture of synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments: ALEXIT-Softcoating 401-75;
- catalyst: ALEXIT Harter 450;
- thinner: ALEXIT Verdunner 62,
and advantageously mixed according to the doses in percentage or in weight indicated above.
The steps of the process are described below.
The first step of the process according to the invention consists in providing sheets of wood 2 with a thickness of 6/10 of mm, and of gluing a textile fiber backing 3 onto them by means of a first adhesive 4, of polyurethane or vinyl thermofusible water-resistant type.
This is followed by a step of calibrating the laminated sheets of wood 2 thus obtained, to take them to a thickness of 4/10 of mm, thus making them much more pliable.
In preferred embodiments of the process, and to obtain products 1 that can be used in a wide variety and in prestigious applications, such as in the fashion, leather or furnishing sectors, to produce items 100 such as
articles of clothing, accessories, bags, belts or chairs, it is possible to glue, by means of universal glue 8, said laminated sheets of wood 2 thus obtained, to a sheet of flexible material 7, chosen, for example, from hide, leather, cuoietto leather, eco-leather and fabric.
The composite product 1 is then left to dry before being cold pressed.
Subsequently, a second adhesive 5 of vinyl type in aqueous dispersion is spread on said sheets 2, in particular on the free surface of the wood, and left to dry at room temperature for at least one day.
Subsequently, the surface of said sheets 2 coated with said vinyl adhesive 5 is sanded with sandpaper to make it smooth and devoid of impurities, before applying thereto a two-component varnish 6 comprising, dosed as described above, a finishing enamel based on a mixture of synthetic resins, organic solvents and pigments, a catalyst based on polyisocyanates, and a thinner comprising a mixture of halogen-free organic solvents.
The synergic effect that is created between the adhesive 5 and the two- component varnish 6 determines the particular flexibility of the flexible composite product 1 thus obtained and in particular of the layer of wood.
