Definitions
- the invention relates to a drawer system and its illumination using optical fibres.
- Wood-based materials and plastics are most frequently used to build furniture. Due to an increasing technical and technological development, there is an ever greater choice of suitable materials, and their properties are often optimized already during their production, according to their intended use. In connection with the development of various types of materials, in addition to the basic mechanical and structural features, requirements are imposed on the fulfilment of other functions, particularly decorative and utility functions.
- Optical fibres are used primarily for the construction of data distribution networks. However, it is also known to use optical fibers as the so-called lamp from optical fibres, wherein the optical fibres are used as self-supporting elements in an area without an outer envelope, on one end of which is installed an artificial light source (bulb, LED, laser). Fibres transferring light in this way serve as an esthetic interior decoration of residential buildings and means of transport.
- an artificial light source bulb, LED, laser
- LED lighting technology based on incorporated additional sources of illumination using LED diodes, can also be used for illumination of the furniture.
- the diodes are applied on the surface of the material.
- this technology is characterized by relatively high power consumption and by non-compact attachment of lighting fixtures on the surface of the material.
- FR 9209251 describes a device using light guides made of a transparent material and a reflective layer that reflects light towards the object to be illuminated.
- FR 2727841 describes a furniture or decorative plate that uses light guides and light-diffusing elements.
- the present invention provides a drawer system containing optical fibres, enabling light to pass through furniture construction materials without the need to install an additional light source within the furniture. Furthermore, when a drawer is opened, interruption of the optical fibres allows for the drawer interior to be illuminated.
- the subject of the present invention is a drawer system containing an outer frame and at least one drawer, which further contains at least one optical fibre leading from the outer surface of the outer frame through the wall of the outer frame, and through at least one wall of the drawer, selected from the group containing sidewalls and front walls.
- the optical fibre is interrupted at the entry and at the exit to/from the construction material of the wall of the drawer or outer frame, respectively, whereas the sections of the optical fibre are positioned in the walls of the frame and of the drawer(s), and the ends of the sections of the optical fibre connect to each other when drawer(s) are closed. This allows for light beams to pass from the outer surface of the outer frame via the optical fibres to their point of interruption, e.g. when a drawer is opened.
- Optical fibres are made of materials selected from a group containing glass (usually quartz, soda-lime and borosilicate, optionally a mix or with the addition of rare elements; for infrared light, it is possible to use chalcogenide glass, etc.) or plastic (polymer optical fibres on the basis of thermosets and thermoplastics), or optical fibres made of special materials with very low attenuation (e.g. heavy metal fluoride glasses which are quite fragile for common purposes, but can be suitably used within the construction material). It is possible to provide colored and fluorescent fibers. Within the construction material of drawers, optical fibres are conducted in one direction, or in several directions. The angle line of optical fibres relative to the surface plane of the wall of the outer frame (e.g.
- a kitchen countertop may be 0° - the optical fibre is therefore parallel to the outer surface of the frame, or the angle of the line of optical fibres relative to the surface plane of the wall of the outer frame is 90°, and thus the optical fibre is perpendicular to the outer surface of the outer frame, or the optical fibres can be conducted in an angle between 0° and 90° relative to the surface plane of the wall of of the outer frame or drawers.
- the optical fibres can be conducted individually (one by one) or in a bundle.
- the bundle of optical fibres can be focused into one place on the input from one side of the material, while the output from the opposite side of the material can come out in a plurality of places and can therefore form a pattern or a shape.
- optical fibres may also distribute light from one point on the surface of the material towards a plurality of locations and/or surfaces of the material, e.g. the lateral surfaces, edges and corners of an outer frame or a drawer.
- Optical fibres within the construction material of drawers are either uncoated or coated with a protective envelope. They are inserted into the construction material either already during the manufacturing process, or are inserted into the construction material subsequently.
- the outer frame and the drawer(s) are made of one or more construction materials.
- the construction material of drawers preferably contains wood elements and optical fibres, preferably the construction material contains also additives, and preferably its surface may be finished.
- the wood elements of construction material are made of solid wood, for example boards, strips, planks, slats, and/or wood veneer and/or wood chips and/or wood fibres and/or lignocellulosic fibres or compounds based on polymer cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin compounds ensuring lignification of cell walls, e.g. raw materials from flax, hemp etc.
- the construction material of drawers is further characterized by additives in particular based on adhesive composition, dyes and flame retardants and plastic.
- the construction material of drawers is also characterized in that the surface finishing of the construction material contains a transparent layer, colored pigments, veneer, laminate, film or paper.
- the construction material of drawers contains layers.
- wood-based materials there are numerous other materials which can be used, in particular agglomerated materials, materials bonded with mineral binders, composite materials, wood-plastic materials, plastics and combined special materials.
- Wood is the only renewable raw material widely utilizable in the production of furniture and in construction, and the energy consumed in the production of wood-based material with incorporated optical fibres is several times lower than for other materials such as plastics or metal alloys, etc.
- the construction material of drawers on the basis of wood and optical fibres contains wood-based materials and optionally additives.
- Optical fibres are pressed into the central layer or layers of the material.
- Optical fibres may also be pressed or bonded to the surface layer of the material.
- Optical fibres become part of the construction material during the course of the manufacturing process - usually they are incorporated during the pressing process, or optical fibres are inserted into the construction material subsequently.
- the subject of the present invention is also a method of illuminating the interior part of the drawer system, containing an outer frame and at least one drawer, where the light passes from the outer surface of the outer frame via at least one optical fibre through at least one wall of the outer frame, and/or through at least one wall of the drawer selected from sidewalls and a front wall, continuously up to the point of interruption of the optical fibre.
- the interruption of the optical fibre occurs just above the opened drawer, and the drawer is thereby illuminated by the end of the optical fibre at the point of interruption.
- the floor and/or the base of the drawer system may be illuminated, while when any drawer is opened, the illumination of the floor and/or the base of the drawer system is interrupted. This can be used for example as a control of the closure of the drawers.
- the main advantage of the drawer system with passive illumination according to the present invention is the distribution of light through optical fibres, or optionally optical fibre bundles.
- the system of distribution of light is provided within the internal structure of construction material, and thus there is no need to install additional illumination systems on its inner surface, which would increase energy costs.
- Another advantage of this light distribution solution inside the material is a smooth surface of the material, wherein none of the surfaces are distorted by any additional illumination system. This solution can therefore be used even in such cases, wherein an installation of an illumination system on the surface of the material would present an obstacle for the correct function of the product, or in terms of safety and hygiene.
- the drawer system with passive illumination guides light via optical fibres which are not in one piece, but rather in sections.
- the optical fibres are a part of the construction material, and their interconnection/disconnection is possible after the drawers are closed/opened, respectively, guiding light to the floor/base of the drawer system or into the internal space of a drawer, respectively.
- the proposed solution can be applied, for instance, for illuminating drawer systems in kitchen/living room cabinets, where the optical fibres guide a beam of light through the cabinet body (cladding) into a drawer and thereby facilitating user's orientation within the drawer.
- the light can also be guided via optical fibres through partitions in furniture, drawer storage systems, sliding book shelves in libraries, etc.
- Fig. 1A and 1B show a drawer system containing eight optical fibres 3 , outer frame having a kitchen countertop 8 and sidewall 1 .
- Drawers 2 have front walls 6 and are equipped with handles 7 .
- Optical fibres 3 guide light from the light source (natural light or light source placed above the kitchen countertop 8 ) through the kitchen countertop 8 and the front wall 6 of the drawers 2 to the points of interruption 4 of the optical fibres 3 at the side surfaces of the front walls 6 of the drawers 2 .
- the light source naturally light or light source placed above the kitchen countertop 8
- Fig. 1B When all drawers are closed ( Fig. 1A ), the floor and/or the base 9 of the drawer system is illuminated, while when any drawer 2 is opened ( Fig. 1B ), the illumination of the base 9 is interrupted and the interior of the opened drawer 2 is illuminated by the optical fibres 3 interrupted on the side surface of the front wall 6 of the upper drawer 2 , or on the bottom surface of the kitchen countertop 8 .
- Fig. 2 , 3 and 4 depict drawer systems according to the present invention, wherein optical fibres 3 are conducted in a bundle ( Fig. 10 ).
- the bundle of optical fibres 3 is focused into one place on the input from one side of the kitchen countertop 8 , while on the output from the opposite side of the material (the side surface of the front wall 6 of the upper drawer 2 ) optical fibres 3 come out in a plurality of places.
- the floor and/or the base 9 of the drawer system is illuminated, while when any drawer 2 is opened ( Fig. 3B ), the illumination of the base 9 is interrupted and the interior of the opened drawer 2 is illuminated by the optical fibres 3 terminated on the side surface of the front wall 6 of the upper drawer 2 .
- the angle line of optical fibres 3 against the outer wall of the outer frame may be 0° - the optical fibre 3 is therefore parallel to the outer surface of the outer frame ( Fig. 2 , 3 and 4 ), or the angle of the line of optical fibres against the wall of the outer frame is 90°, and thus the optical fibre 3 is perpendicular to the outer surface of the outer frame ( Fig. 1 , 5 and 7 ), or the optical fibres 3 can be conducted in an angle between 0° and 90° relative to the plane of outer surface of the outer frame ( Fig. 6 , 8 and 9 ).
- the drawer system with passive illumination is made of construction materials and optical fibres.
- Optical fibres allow the light to be guided through the construction material of the drawer systems without the need to install an additional light source within the drawer system, and they allow the interior of the drawers to be illuminated upon their opening.
- the drawer system with passive illumination can be applied in particular for drawer systems in kitchen or living room cabinets, meeting the increasing demands and requirements on its design, functionality, safety and hygiene. Through the transmission and distribution of a beam of light from a single external artificial source and/or sunlight, it economizes the electricity costs.
