Description

APPARATUS FOR HOLDING AND HANDLING
A CARDBOARD IN A TILE PACKAGING MACHINE
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to the technical sector of machines for packing one or more stacked tiles, with particular reference to gripping and handling of cardboard blanks which realize packing of the tile or stacks of tiles.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
In machines for packing stacks of tiles, the gripping groups that vertically move cardboard blanks in a flattened configuration are generally constituted by a pair of pliers bilaterally positioned with respect to the cardboard blanks.
Each gripping plier comprises a pair of jaws, activated to open and/or close, and linear actuator means for vertically moving the pliers.
The cardboard blanks are moved from a high vertical position, in which they are removed by the gripping pliers, to a low vertical position, in which they are intercepted by a tile or stack of tiles so as to enable the folding thereof against the tile or stack of tiles, and in which they are released by the gripping pliers in a phase relation with the intercepting.
The cardboard blanks can be brought to the high vertical position by transport means, for example comprising a pair of opposite chains, or alternatively by collecting means which collect the cardboard blanks from one or more stores.
At the high vertical position, the mechanical action that the jaws of the gripping pliers exert during the collecting step on the cardboard blank can lead to the breaking, tearing and in any case the damaging of the cardboard blank.
A further problem linked to the use of the gripping pliers consists in the difficulty of maintaining the cardboard blank sufficiently stretched in the travel between the high vertical position and the low vertical position, with the possibility of compromising the correct folding of the cardboard blank against the tile or the stack of tiles, at the low vertical position, and consequently obtain a poor packing quality. A further problem consists in the limited stability of the cardboard blank during the intercepting step by the tile or the stack of tiles, which necessarily requires disengagement of the cardboard blank from the gripping pliers in a suitable synchrony with respect to the folding step.
The above-described problems are particularly serious in cases where the cardboard blank has a limited thickness or the type known as single-face, i.e. comprising a corrugated structure and a single covering sheet glued onto the corrugated structure, i.e. when the rigidity of the cardboard blank is relatively low.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
With reference to the above-mentioned tables of drawings, reference number (1) denotes the gripping and handling group of a cardboard blank (2) in a machine for packing one or more stacked tiles.
In known ways the gripping and handling group (1) is able to support and vertically move the cardboard blank (2) in a flattened configuration from a first vertical position (A) into a second vertical position (B) in which the cardboard blank (2) is intercepted by a tile or a stack of tiles (3) moved by a first transport line (T1); the intercepting enabling folding of the cardboard blank (2) against flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3).
In a novel way, the gripping and handling group 1 comprises aspirating means (4a, 4b) able to support the cardboard blank (2) by suction effect at least at the first vertical position (A) and in the travel between the first vertical position (A) and the second vertical position (B), in which the cardboard blank (2) is intercepted by a tile or a stack of tiles 3 moved by the first transport line (T1 ).
The gripping and handling group (1) is able to work with any type of cardboard blank (2), even with relatively small thickness, and is in any case especially advantageous for treatment of a cardboard blank of the "single face" type, i.e. comprising a corrugated structure (100) and a single covering sheet (101) glued on the corrugated structure (100).
The aspirating means (4a, 4b) support the cardboard blank (2) by suction effect even after the intercepting of the cardboard blank (2) by a tile or a stack of tiles (3), enabling sliding of the cardboard blank (2) with respect to the aspirating means (4a, 4b) during the step of folding the cardboard blank (2) against the flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3). In a preferred embodiment, represented in the accompanying tables of drawings, the aspirating means (4a, 4b) comprise at least a pair of aspirating surfaces, a first (4a) and a second (4b), able to bilaterally support the cardboard blank (2).
The cardboard blank (2) comprises a central portion (20), suitable for being intercepted by the tile or stack of tiles (3), and at least a pair of lateral portions (21 , 22) bilaterally hinged to the central portion (20) and suitable for being folded on the flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3).
Figures 7, 7a, 8, 8a illustrate a cardboard blank (2) having a different structure, i.e. comprising a central portion (20) that can be intercepted by the tiles or stack of tiles (3), and pair of lateral portions (21 , 22) bilaterally hinged to the central portion (20) and a pair of supplementary portions (23, 24), each hinged to the corresponding lateral portion (21 , 22).
The gripping and handling group (1) of the invention is able to effectively and advantageously treat both the structures of cardboard blank (2) having both three (20, 21, 22) and five (20, 21 , 22, 23, 24) portions.
The pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b), positioned straddling the first transport line (T1), advantageously bilaterally supports the cardboard blank (2) by aspirating effect at the lateral portions (21 , 22) of the cardboard blank (2).
The pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) advantageously identified by the surfaces of an aspirating plane (17, 170) connected to a source of depression, is contained in a vertical plane perpendicular to the advancing direction (W) of the tile or stack of tiles (3) moved by the first transport line (T1).
In the same way, according to specifications, the pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) can be identified by a plurality of suckers (not illustrated), adjacent to one another and connected to a source of depression.
In the travel between the vertical positions, first A and second B, each aspirating plane (17, 170) is slidably guided and activated by corresponding linear actuators (40, 41).
In the accompanying tables of drawings, the cardboard blank 2 is supplied to
S the first vertical position (A) by means of a second transport line (T2) positioned laterally to the first transport line (T1), each aspirating plane (17, 170) being provided with an inclined lateral side (18, 171) identifying an entry part that facilitates handling of the cardboard blank (2) towards the first vertical position (A), preventing snagging phenomena against the aspirating plane (17, 170).
When collecting the cardboard blank 2 from the second transport line T2, the aspirating planes (17, 170) exert a controlled action, i.e. without sudden tugging, on the cardboard blank 2, differently to the jaws of the gripping pliers of the known technical solutions.
This is thanks to the aspirating effect exerted by the aspirating planes (17, 170) which, according to needs, enables sliding of the cardboard blank (2) with respect to the aspirating planes (17, 170) during the step of collecting from the second transport line (T2).
In figures 1 and 1a the cardboard blank (2) is borne by the second transport line (T2) to supply the gripping and handling group (1).
In figures 2 and 2a the cardboard blank (2) is positioned at the first vertical position (A), bilaterally supported by the pair of aspirating planes (17, 170).
In figures 3 and 3a the cardboard blank (2) is moved distancingly from the first vertical position (A), bilaterally supported by the pair of aspirating planes (17, 170).
In figures 4 and 4a the cardboard blank (2) is positioned at the second vertical position (B), supported bilaterally by the pair of aspirating planes (17, 170), waiting to be intercepted by a stack of tiles (3) moved by the first transport line (T1) according to the advancement direction (W).
In figures 5 and 5a, the cardboard blank 2, supported bilaterally by the pair of aspirating planes (17, 170), is intercepted by a stack of tiles (3), with a corresponding start of the step of folding the cardboard blank (2) against the flanks (30) of the stack of tiles (3).
Figure 5b illustrates a larger-scale view along arrow Z indicated in figure 5a of the initial step of folding the cardboard blank (2) on the stack of tiles (3). Figures 6, 6a illustrated perspective views in section of a cardboard blank (2) of the single-face type, i.e. comprising a corrugated structure (100) and a single covering sheet (101) glued on the corrugated structure (100).
While in figures from 1 to 5 and in figures from 1 a to 5a, a structured cardboard blank (2) is illustrated, structured with three longitudinal portions, i.e. a central portion (20) and two lateral portions (21 , 22), in figures 7, 8 and figures (7a, 8a) the gripping and handling group (1) operates on a cardboard blank (2) structured with overall five longitudinal portions, i.e. a central portion (20), two lateral portions (21 , 22) hinged to the central portion (20), as well as two supplementary portions (23, 24) each of which is hinged to the corresponding lateral portion (21 , 22).
As can be seen in figures 7, 7a, 8, 8a the cardboard blank (2) is advantageously supported bilaterally by aspirating effect at the lateral portions (21 , 22); this does not exclude that according to technical-production specifications the cardboard blank (2), alternatively, can be supported bilaterally by aspirating effect also at the supplementary portions (23, 24) or even at a lateral portion (21 , 22) and a supplementary portion (23, 24).
From the above it can easily be understood how the gripping and handling group of a cardboard blank in a machine for packing one or more stacked tiles is able to solve the problems of the technical solutions in the prior art.
During the step of collection of the cardboard blank from the second transport line, the aspirating planes exert a controlled grip action, less rigid with respect to the pliers of the prior art (described in the preamble hereto), preventing any phenomena of breakage, tearing or damaging of the cardboard blank.
According to functioning needs, during the collecting stage of the cardboard blank from the second transport line the aspirating planes, thanks to the aspirating effect, enable sliding of the cardboard blank with respect to the aspirating planes, preventing excessive traction stresses.
In the travel between the first vertical position and the second vertical position, thanks to the aspirating effect the aspirating planes enable maintaining the cardboard blank sufficiently stretched with respect to the pliers of the prior art, thus facilitating a correct folding of the cardboard blank against the tile or stack of tiles, after having reached the second vertical position.
In this way a high quality of packing of the tile or stack of tiles is obtained, as the cardboard blank is maintained substantially aligned to the flanks of the tile or stack of tiles during the folding steps.
During the folding step of the cardboard blank against the flanks to tile or stack of tiles, the cardboard blank is maintained supported by the aspirating planes and slides on the surfaces thereof, differently to the pliers of the prior art which in synchrony with the intercepting of the cardboard blank by the tile or the stack of tiles release the cardboard blank, which is therefore free and not supported during the folding steps.
This enables further increasing the quality of packing of the tile or the stack of tiles.
The peculiarity by which the cardboard blank reaches the second vertical position perfectly stretched, and the cardboard blank is supported during the folding steps against the flanks of the tile or the stack of tiles, enable obtaining a desired position of the end edges of the cardboard blank at the conclusion of the folding steps.
This enables achieving a high packing precision level both in a case in which the final package comprises a single cardboard blank, which winds perimetrally to the tile or stack of tiles and closes in proximity of the end edge, and in a case in which the final package comprises a pair of cardboard blanks and requires the end edges of the first cardboard blank to be closed in proximity of the end edges of the second cardboard blank.
The gripping and handling group is further able to operate advantageously on cardboard blanks of various type and structure.
It is in fact able to treat cardboard blanks having a particularly limited rigidity, imputable both the small thickness thereof, and the single-face type which involves gluing a corrugated structure to a single covering sheet.
The gripping and handling group of the present invention is able to treat cardboard blanks comprising a plurality of portions, by way of example cardboard blanks comprising a central portion and two lateral portions bilaterally hinged to the central portion, i.e. cardboard blanks comprising, beyond the central portion and the lateral portions, a further pair of supplementary portions, each hinged to the corresponding lateral adjacent portion.

Claims

1) A gripping and handling group of a cardboard blank in a machine for packing one or more stacked tiles; the group (1) being able to support and vertically move the cardboard blank (2) in a flattened configuration from a first vertical position (A) into a second vertical position (B) in which the cardboard blank (2) is intercepted by a tile or a stack of tiles (3) moved by a first transport line (T1); the intercepting enabling folding of the cardboard blank (2) against flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3); the group (1) being characterised in that it comprises aspirating means (4a, 4b) able to support the cardboard blank (2) by suction effect at least at the first vertical position (A) and in the travel between the first vertical position (A) and the second vertical position (B), in which the cardboard blank (2) is intercepted by a tile or a stack of tiles (3); the pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) comprising at least a pair of aspirating surfaces, first (4a) and second (4b), able to bilaterally support the cardboard blank (2), the pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) being positioned bilaterally to the first transport line (T1), straddling the first transport line (T1).
2) The group of claim 1 , characterised in that the aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) support the cardboard blank (2) by suction effect even after the intercepting of the cardboard blank (2) by a tile or a stack of tiles (3), enabling sliding of the cardboard blank (2) with respect to the aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) during the step of folding the cardboard blank (2) against the flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3).
3) The group of claim 1 or 2, wherein the cardboard blank 2 comprises a central portion (20), suitable for being intercepted by the tile or stack of tiles (3), and at least a pair of lateral portions (21 , 22) bilaterally hinged to the central portion (20) and suitable for being folded on the flanks (30) of the tile or stack of tiles (3); characterised in that the pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) bilaterally supports the cardboard blank (2) by suction effect at the lateral portions (21 , 22) of the cardboard blank (2).
4) The group of one of claims from 1 to 3, characterised in that the pair of aspirating surfaces (4a, 4b) is contained in a vertical plane perpendicular to the advancing direction (W) of the tile or stack of tiles (3) moved by the first transport line (T1).
5) The group of one of claims from 1 to 4, characterised in that each aspirating surface (4a, 4b) is slidably guided in travel thereof between the first (A) and the second (B) vertical positions, and is activated by corresponding linear actuators (40, 41).
6) The group of one of claims from 1 to 5, characterised in that each aspirating surface (4a,4b) is identified by a surface of an aspirating plane (17, 170) connected to a source under depression.
7) The group of claim 6, wherein the cardboard blank (2) is supplied to the first vertical position (A) by means of a second transport line (T2) positioned laterally to the first transport line (T1); characterised in that at least an aspirating plane (17, 170) is provided with an inclined lateral side (18, 171) identifying an entry part that facilitates handling of the cardboard blank (2) towards the first vertical position (A), preventing snagging phenomena against the aspirating plane (17, 170).
8) The group of one of claims from 1 to 7, characterised in that the cardboard blank (2) comprises a corrugated structure (100) and a single covering sheet (101) glued on the corrugated structure (100).
