Definitions

  • the invention relates to a test unit for detecting skimming modules, which includes a holding area for manual holding of the test unit.
  • skimming attacks are increasingly being attempted in which the account data and PIN are attempted -Number to get unauthorized money.
  • so-called skimming modules are placed in front of the input area into which the magnetic stripe and / or chip card is inserted in order to be able to read out the data of the magnetic stripes via a card reader contained in the skimming module.
  • These skimming modules are usually constructed in such a way that they are not visually recognizable to the layperson or, in part, even to the person skilled in the art.
  • a camera is concealed, via which the input of the PIN is filmed, so that the person carrying out the skimming attack knows both the card data and the associated PIN and can therefore withdraw money from the foreign account.
  • a second keyboard above the actual keyboard of the device can be arranged, via which the PIN is tapped.
  • test card which is in the form of a normal EC card, but has a thickening in the region in which the magnetic strip is normally arranged.
  • the feed slot of the ATM is thickened accordingly in the initial area, in which only lane detection takes place, so that the test card can be inserted.
  • skimming modules are to be recognized, since it is assumed that the slots of the skimming modules only have the "normal" thickness of an EC card in order to be able to read out the magnetic strip reliably.
  • the disadvantage of this method is that it can be easily circumvented by also having a corresponding recess in the skimming module in the area of the thickening of the test card, so that the test card can also be inserted.
  • the test unit has a test area for placing the test unit on a device for reading magnetic strips and / or chip cards, this test area being complementary to a predetermined partial area of the external geometry of the device.
  • the predetermined partial area of the outer geometry of the device is in particular designed to converge, so that each advance of a unit automatically changes geometry that can be easily recognized by the test unit.
  • the device for reading a magnetic stripe and / or chip card is, in particular, an automated teller machine, an automatic cash register system, an automatic safe deposit box, a payment terminal or any other device, into the magnetic stripe and / or chip cards, in particular credit cards or EC cards , are introduced.
  • the magnetic stripe and / or chip card is in particular an EC card, a credit card or a bank card.
  • the device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards has, in particular, a slot for inserting the magnetic stripe and / or chip card, the predetermined partial area, to which the test area of the test unit is complementary, being in particular in the area of the slot, so that Attaching a skimming module, which inevitably always takes place in the area of this slot, can be reliably detected.
  • test area of the test unit is designed, in particular, as a recess in the test unit, so that the test unit can simply be checked for one through the slot in the test unit Magnetic stripe and / or chip card trained projection can be placed.
  • the recess runs at least in a conical area, so that the attachment of each skimming module that inevitably applies to the geometry can be recognized accordingly and the test unit can no longer be attached without a gap.
  • the test unit is designed such that, if no skimming module is attached, no gap is formed between the edge forming the recess in the test area and the geometry of the device. If, on the other hand, a skimming module is arranged, a gap remains between the outer geometry of the device and the inner edge of the recess in the test area. This makes it very easy to see whether a skimming module has been attached or not without the employee performing the test having to be specially trained for this.
  • the recess is in particular U-shaped, V-shaped, V-shaped with a straight bottom area or following the contour of the input area.
  • the recess has in particular a bottom and two side walls as edges, the side walls being arranged on the opposite sides at the same angle to the bottom of the recess.
  • the test unit is in particular plate-shaped, preferably card-shaped. This has the advantage that it can be handled easily and requires little storage space. It is particularly advantageous if the test unit itself has approximately the format of a credit card, so that it can easily be carried by the person carrying out the test.
  • the test unit can also have a three-dimensional configuration.
  • the test area is designed such that it reproduces the shape of the input area of the device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards in more than one direction.
  • the test area is preferably designed in the form of a three-dimensional, negative template.
  • the test unit is made in particular of plastic, whereby an inexpensive, simple manufacture is achieved. It also minimizes weight.
  • test unit has a constant thickness so that it can be handled easily.
  • the holding area via which a person can handle the test unit manually, is arranged in particular on a side opposite the test area.
  • the holding area is in particular simply designed as a flat area of the plate-shaped or card-shaped test unit.
  • the invention relates to an arrangement which comprises a previously described test unit and a device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards.
  • the device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards is, in particular, an automated teller machine, an automatic cash register system, a safe deposit box, a payment terminal and / or any other device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards.
  • the device has, in particular, a slot for inserting the magnetic stripe and / or chip card, the device having a projection within which the slot is arranged.
  • the test area is preferably complementary to this projection, i. H. that the test area in particular has a complementary recess. This ensures that the test unit can simply be placed on the projection into which the card is inserted and can be used to detect whether a change has been made to the geometry. If this is the case, it is assumed that a skimming module has been installed.
  • the test area is shaped in particular in such a way that if the geometry of the device corresponds to the planned production state, the test unit can be placed seamlessly on the predetermined partial area of the device, in particular on a projection. If, on the other hand, the geometry of the device has been changed from the planned state of manufacture, in particular if a skimming module has been attached, the test unit no longer fits seamlessly to the predetermined partial area of the device, since the applied skimming module is applied.
  • the slot can also be arranged in a recess.
  • the test area is designed as a projection that can be inserted into the recess.
  • a skimming module is understood in particular to mean any device which is arranged in front of a card reader of a magnetic stripe and / or chip card and which itself serves to read out data from the magnetic stripe and / or chip card.
  • FIG. 1 a schematic representation of a device 50 for reading magnetic strips or chip cards is shown.
  • the device 50 can be an automated teller machine, an automatic cash register system, an automatic safe cash register, a payment terminal or any other device into which a magnetic stripe and / or chip card is inserted.
  • the magnetic stripe and / or chip card is, in particular, a credit card, an EC card or a bank card.
  • the device 50 has a projection 52, in the area of which a slot 54 is arranged, into which a magnetic stripe and / or chip card can be inserted in accordance with the arrow P1.
  • a card reader 56 is arranged behind the slot, with the aid of which data can be read from the magnetic strip and / or chip of the magnetic strip and / or chip card.
  • the device 50 has a housing 58, through which the outer geometry of the device 50 is formed.
  • the projection 52 is in particular part of this housing 58.
  • the device 50 can have an input unit 60, for example a keyboard, via which an operator of the device 50 can enter the PIN associated with the magnetic stripe and / or chip card for authorization.
  • an input unit 60 for example a keyboard
  • skimming modules are arranged in front of the slot 54, with the aid of which the data of a magnetic stripe and / or chip card are to be read out when they are supplied, so that persons access the card data without authorization.
  • These skimming modules must accordingly be arranged in front of the slot 54, so that they have to be placed on the projection 52.
  • the projection 52 is designed in such a way that its two side walls 62, 64 run towards one another, so that the width of the projection 52 becomes smaller as the distance from the device 50 increases.
  • the area in which the slot is arranged is in particular flat and is arranged parallel to the main housing surface 66 of the device 50.
  • skimming modules are always better adapted to the actual appearance of the device, so that it is very difficult to recognize such a skimming module, especially for untrained people.
  • test unit 10 is used according to the invention, as shown schematically in FIG Figure 2 is shown.
  • the test unit 10 has a holding area 12, on which the test unit 10 can easily be handled manually by a person performing the test. Furthermore, the test unit 10 has a test area 14, which in the case of the Figure 2 embodiment shown is formed in the form of a recess. This recess 14 is complementary to that portion of the outer geometry of the device 50 in which the slot 54 for inserting the magnetic strips and / or chip cards is arranged. With the geometry of the in Figure 1 Device 50 shown, the recess 14 is thus complementary to the projection 52.
  • the recess is delimited in particular by a base 16 and two side walls 18, 20, which thus form the edges of the recess 14.
  • the test unit 10 is in particular plate-shaped, preferably card-shaped, and is made of plastic, so that it can be handled easily, has a low weight and requires little space.
  • the checking unit 10 also has approximately the shape of a credit card.
  • Figure 3 thus shows an arrangement 100 from the device 50 Figure 1 and the test unit 10 Figure 2 .
  • the test unit 10 is simply put on the protrusion 52 itself, so that the protrusion 52 is arranged within the recess 14.
  • test unit 10 can be placed exactly on the projection 52, so that no gap is formed between the test unit 10 and the outer geometry of the device 50.
  • the outer geometry of the device 50 inevitably also changes, since the skimming module 102 itself has a thickness and thus changes the outer geometry.
  • the shape of the protrusion 50 in particular the converging side walls 62, 64, ensures that each skimming module 102, no matter how it is shaped, changes the external geometry due to its inevitably present thickness and thus always a gap 22 between it and the skimming module 102 formed outer geometry and the test unit 10 remains.
  • the check can also be carried out by untrained persons who are not well acquainted with the external appearance of the device 50, since they only have to check whether the test unit "fits" on the device 50 or not.
  • the protrusion 52 can also be shaped differently.
  • the cutout 14 of the test unit 10 is correspondingly shaped differently.
  • the device 50 does not have a projection 52 in the area of the slot, but instead has a recess, for example.
  • the test area 14 of the test unit 10 is correspondingly complementary, that is to say in this case itself is designed as a projection which, if no skimming module 102 has been inserted into the recess in the device 50, fits seamlessly into the latter.
  • test unit 10 is provided for each type of device 50 for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards, which is respectively adapted to the individual geometry.
  • Figure 5 is a schematic, perspective view of a card reader 70 for reading a magnetic stripe and / or chip card.
  • Figure 6 shows a test unit 80 according to a second embodiment, by means of which the card reader 70 can be checked for the attachment of skimming modules.
  • the test unit 80 is three-dimensional.
  • their test area 14 is also three-dimensional, ie that it is complementary to the contour of the card reader 70 in more than one direction.
  • the test area 16 is thus designed like a negative template relative to the input area, that is to say the area in which the slot 54 is arranged.
  • three-dimensional test units 80 offers greater security than two-dimensional test units 10.
  • FIG. 7 a schematic, perspective illustration of a payment terminal 72 is shown, as is used for example in restaurants for card payment.
  • Figure 8 shows a checking unit 82 according to a third embodiment, by means of which the input area of the payment terminal 72 can be checked.
  • the keyboard of a device for reading magnetic stripe and / or chip cards can also be checked with the aid of a test unit for the attachment of a further keyboard for spying out the PIN.
  • the test area of the test unit is designed to be complementary to the keyboard of the device or the area around the keyboard.
  • the test unit can also comprise two test areas, namely one for the input area for entering the magnetic stripe and / or chip card and one for the keyboard area.
