Apparatus (10) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the apparatus (10) comprises an input unit (12) for the input of coins and a sorting unit (22) for sorting the coins to different coin hoppers (24), and in that the transport unit (18) is used to transport the coins from the input unit (12) to the sorting unit (22) .

Apparatus (10) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the apparatus (10) comprises an authenticity checking unit (20) for checking the authenticity of input coins, and in that the authenticity checking unit (20) determines the authenticity while the transport unit (18) is transporting the coins past it at the first speed.
  7. Apparatus (10) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the control unit (30) activates the first operating mode during the handling of coins of a first currency and the second operating mode during the handling of coins of a second currency.
  8. Apparatus (10) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the control unit (30) sets the operating mode depending on the filling level of the apparatus (10) with coins.
  9. Apparatus (10) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the control unit (30) activates the first operating mode at the start of an depositing process for depositing coins and the second operating mode a predetermined time before the end of the depositing process.
  10. Method of controlling an apparatus for handling coins,
    in which a transport unit (18) for the transport of coins is driven with the aid of a drive unit (32), and
    in which the speed at which the transport unit (18) is driven is varied depending on the situation,
    characterized in that the speed is increased when a depositing process is discontinued.
  11. Method according to Claim 10, characterized in that the speed is varied depending on the currency and/or depending on the filling level.
  12. Method according to Claim 10 or 11,
    characterized in that the speed is increased at the end of a transaction.
  13. Method according to one of Claims 10 to 12, characterized in that the speed is varied continuously or in preset steps.
