Definitions
- Phase change catalyst-material composite material related manufacturing processes and use of such material in catalytic reactions
- the present invention relates to the field of heterogeneous catalytic exothermic or endothermic chemical reactions.
- the present invention relates more particularly to the production of a new hybrid particle material comprising a catalytic phase of these reactions.
- the invention also relates to the use of such a new material and the associated manufacturing methods.
- the invention is advantageously implemented in a continuous reaction in a reaction chamber of a circulating fluidized bed type reactor.
- Exothermic catalytic reactions such as the synthesis of methane, methanol from synthesis gas commonly called syngas, or endothermic such as dehydrogenation or reforming reactions require precise control of the temperature in the synthesis reactor to ensure optimum performance and to avoid premature deactivation of the catalytic phase.
- endothermic reactions the energy of the reaction must be removed from the reaction chamber and vice versa for the endothermic reactions.
- phase change materials are materials capable of having a reversible physical phase change whose associated enthalpy variation (or latent heat) allows storage and retrieval of thermal energy.
- volume density the storage capacity of a PCM material is typically 3 to 4 times higher than that which can be reached by sensible heat.
- the phase change of a MCP material is isothermal in nature, ie it takes place at constant temperature.
- phase change for MCP materials, respectively solid-solid, solid-liquid, solid-vapor and liquid-vapor.
- the latent heat and the volume variation of a PCM material are all the higher as the order variation (given by the entropy variation) associated with the phase transition is important.
- a variation of solid-vapor order is greater than a solid-liquid order variation which is itself greater than a solid-solid order variation.
- MCP materials There are several families of MCP materials ranging from simple materials to composite materials: see Figure 2 of the publication [1]. Among the simple materials, organic materials and inorganic materials are classically distinguished. Among the composite materials, there are eutectic compounds of organic-organic, organic-inorganic and inorganic-inorganic types. These families of MCP materials can also be classified according to the chemical nature of the materials: paraffins, fatty acids, salt hydrates, nitrates, ... We can refer to the publication [2] which illustrates a classification of families of MCP materials according to their volume density of thermal storage.
- Each of these materials has a unique phase change temperature and a unique latent heat density. Physically, these two parameters are linked by a linear relationship, such that the latent heat density increases with the phase change temperature.
- MCP material For systems implementing chemical reactions, the choice of MCP material is usually made according to the temperature at which the chemical reaction takes place and the thermal energy to be stored or released.
- thermodynamics a suitable phase change temperature, a high latent heat, a high thermal conductivity
- the patent application US 2008/0272331 also proposes hybrid nanoparticles of size between 10 and 100 nm, with a casing of a thermal conductive metal material encapsulating a PCM. These dimensions make it possible to obtain a high thermal storage power because small particles can melt or solidify quickly. Nevertheless, they have a low unit storage capacity and therefore a large amount of these particles is required to effectively store the heat produced by the chemical reaction.
- a particular need is to propose a new solution using a PCM phase change material in a catalytic chemical reaction, which is simple to implement and at a lower cost.
- the invention relates, in one of its aspects, to a hybrid particle material each consisting of a particle of a phase change material (PCM) interfaced with a catalytic material in solid form. dimensions of the hybrid particles being between 0.1 mm and 10 mm, preferably between 1 mm and 5 mm.
- PCM phase change material
- catalytic material is meant that is meant here and in the context of the invention, the usual meaning of the term, that is to say a solid material on which the reaction occurs at least one step and which allows to lower the activation energy as well as the temperature of the chemical reaction, without appearing in the equation of the reaction.
- MCP material and the catalytic material are in direct physical contact without the use of an intermediate specific material to achieve their adhesion or in indirect physical contact by means of an interface material required for the encapsulation of MCP material when it has a liquid phase.
- interface material required for the encapsulation of MCP material when it has a liquid phase.
- a PCM material having a vapor phase or a high vapor pressure is excluded from MCP materials that may be suitable for carrying out the invention.
- a large majority of MCP materials have a low vapor pressure and can therefore be suitable for carrying out the invention.
- the invention essentially consists in proposing hybrid particles of materials, including a catalytic material intended to catalyze an exothermic or endothermic chemical reaction, which is deposited on the MCP material which will store or respectively destock heat energy from said chemical reaction.
- the dimensions according to the invention allow a satisfactory compromise between a high thermal storage power, a high storage capacity and a sufficient capacity of dispersion of the particles in a fluid, which makes it possible to use the material according to the invention in n ' any catalytic chemical reaction and especially in a fluidized bed.
- thermal energy storage densities of at least 10 J / m 2 that is to say at energy densities, that are obtained are obtained. it is commonly found in catalytic chemical reactions.
- the MCP material is chosen from paraffins, eutectic materials based on nitride, nitrates, hydroxides, fluorides, carbonate, molten salts such as NaN0 2 , NaN0 3 , NaOH, LiOH, NaCl, metal alloys such as AISi, suitable to contain one or more thermal conductive elements such as carbon nanotubes, metals such as Cu, Al, Si.
- the catalytic material covering a surface between 1 and 100%, preferably between 10 and 100% of the outer surface of each hybrid particle.
- the hybrid particle material according to the invention may comprise a continuous layer, made of material distinct from the catalytic material, encapsulating the MCP material.
- a continuous layer is chosen which is compilant so that it can accommodate the volume variations of the MCP material, which are induced by the phase changes, during a catalytic chemical reaction.
- the compliance of the encapsulation layer is preferably determined to accommodate volume changes of the MCP in a reversible manner to allow the material according to the invention to be cycled.
- This continuous encapsulation layer can have physical and chemical barrier properties on the one hand between the MCP material and the catalytic material and on the other hand between the MCP material and the reactants of the catalytic chemical reaction.
- This encapsulation layer can also have mechanical properties acting as a mechanical barrier to protect the MCP material against erosion.
- An encapsulation material with a high coefficient of thermal conductivity, at least equal to that of the MCP material, is chosen.
- the catalytic material is in the form of a continuous layer encapsulating the MCP material.
- the MCP material may have both solid-solid and solid-liquid phase changes without the need to encapsulate it in additional material.
- the catalytic material is in the form of a discontinuous layer partially covering the MCP material.
- the catalytic material is in the form of discrete particles dispersed on the surface or in the volume of each particle of the MCP material.
- the MCP material may have a solid-solid as well as solid-liquid phase change but in the latter case it is necessary to encapsulate it in additional material.
- the catalytic material is in the form of an open structure in which at least one particle of MCP material is impregnated.
- the MCP material may have both a solid-solid phase change and a solid-liquid phase change.
- the catalytic material may be partially or totally composed of Cu, Zn, Al, Cr, Ce, Zr, Pt, Pd, Ni, Ti, Si, and the corresponding oxides and nitrides.
- the invention also relates, in another aspect, to the use of the hybrid particle material just described in an exothermic or endothermic catalytic reaction.
- the exothermic catalytic reaction may be a hydrogenation reaction. It may advantageously be the synthesis of methane (CH4) by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (C0 2 ), the catalytic material being Ni-Al 2 0 3 . It may also advantageously be the synthesis of methanol from synthesis gas (CO + CO 2 + H 2 ), the catalytic material being Cu / ZnO / Al 2 O 3 .
- the reaction is carried out continuously in a reaction chamber of a reactor in which the hybrid particles are circulated.
- the reactor is advantageously a circulating fluidized bed type reactor.
- the invention also relates, in another of its aspects, a powder of hybrid particle material described above.
- the invention also relates, in another of its aspects, to a first method of manufacturing a hybrid particle material each consisting of a particle of a phase change material (PCM) interfaced with a catalytic material in the form of solid, according to which the following steps are carried out:
- PCM phase change material
- step b / may be carried out either by physical vapor deposition (PVD), by magnetron sputtering, or by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), or by a sol-gel technique, or by an electroplating technique, or by a liquid impregnation technique.
- PVD physical vapor deposition
- CVD chemical vapor deposition
- the invention relates to a second method for manufacturing a hybrid particle material, each consisting of a particle of a phase change material (PCM) interfaced with a catalytic material in solid form, according to which the following steps are carried out: :
- the invention finally relates to a third method for manufacturing a hybrid particle material each consisting of a particle of a phase change material (PCM) interfaced with a catalytic material in solid form, according to which the steps are carried out.
- PCM phase change material
- a'2 / production of a catalytic material in the form of an open structure b '/ impregnating the open structure of the catalytic material with the MCP material dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous phase or a solvent;
- a deposition step of a continuous layer, made of material distinct from the catalytic material, encapsulating the MCP material is carried out.
- FIG. 1A to 1D illustrate the various curves of the characteristics of a phase change material (MCP) already marketed and used to produce a hybrid particle of the material according to the invention
- FIGS. 2A to 2E are schematic views showing different hybrid particle shapes of the material according to the invention.
- FIGS. 3A to 3C are schematic views showing different hybrid particle shapes of the material according to one embodiment of the invention.
- FIG. 4 is a schematic example of a continuous synthesis installation using hybrid particles of material according to the invention.
- Examples 1 to 5 below give different examples of embodiment of a hybrid particle material from the same phase-change PCM phase-change material between a solid phase and a solid phase, this material being already sold under the name XI 80® or "PlusICE XI 80®" by the company PCM Products.
- These materials include one or more polyhydric alcohols, such as Ribitol with a melting point of 102 ° C; Fucitol melting point at 153 ° C; or Inositol melting point at 226 ° C or a mixture thereof.
- polyhydric alcohols such as Ribitol with a melting point of 102 ° C; Fucitol melting point at 153 ° C; or Inositol melting point at 226 ° C or a mixture thereof.
- the XI 80® or "PlusICE XI 80®” material is a mixture of these polyhydric alcohols and has a melting point at 180 ° C.
- phase change temperature of the MCP material XI 80® is 180 ° C, ie 20 ° C below the nominal operating temperature of the intended chemical reaction (200 ° C). VS). This thermal gradient allows the heat to diffuse from the environment close to the MCP material to its surface, then to the core melting front of the MCP material thus allowing the storage of heat during the exothermic reaction.
- the thermal storage volume density of the MCP material XI 80® is 372 kJ / m 3 .
- the volume concentration of this MCP material in the operational environment of the reaction then makes it possible to define beforehand the volume density of thermal storage of the heat resulting from the reaction.
- FIG. 1A shows the density of thermal storage possible depending on the volume concentration of MCP material, XI 80®. This linear relationship results, for example, for a volume concentration of 50% MCP, by a possible thermal storage volume density of about 186 kJ / m 3 .
- the surface density of thermal energy storage of the MCP material, XI 80® is a function of a given thickness thereof.
- This linear relation is represented in FIG. 1B.
- the surface density of storage energy is about 60 kJ / m 2 for a thickness of MCP material, XI 80® of the order of 1 mm.
- this value corresponds to an average diameter in the case of using a MCP material in powder form, which makes it possible to define a particle size as a function of the surface density of heat locally available in the reaction chamber setting up catalytic exothermic reaction.
- the melting depth S (t) of the material MCP can be defined as a function of time t according to the following equation:
- FIG. 1C shows the linear relationship linking the thickness or diameter of particles MCP to the melting frequency. It is thus possible to define an average frequency which is optimal as a function of the conditions of use of the MCP material. For example, for an average particle diameter of 1 mm powder, the core melting time of the material is about 8 seconds, i.e., the melting frequency is 0.125 Hz.
- FIG. 1D shows the surface density of thermal storage power of the MCP material, XI 80® as a function of frequency, it being specified that the average particle diameter of powder is 1 mm for a difference in temperature between the temperature of the the exothermic reaction and phase change of the material of the order of 20 ° C.
- a powder of MCP material, XI 80® 1 mm particle size can withstand a storage power density of about 14 kW / m 2 (about 9 kW / m 2 of latent heat and 5 kW / m 2 of heat sensitive) at an operating frequency of 0.125 Hz.
- MCP here the MCP material, XI 80®, its morphology and the dimensions of these particles can and must be adapted to the thermal storage conditions required by the exothermic reaction: energy density, power density and thermal load time.

Description
- thermodynamique : une température de changement de phase adéquate, une chaleur latente élevée, une conductivité thermique élevée ;
- propriétés physiques intrinsèques: densité élevée, variation volumique faible, reproductibilité et stabilité en cyclage;
- propriétés chimiques: stabilité chimique, compatibilité avec les autres matériaux du système, toxicité, inflammabilité ;
- cinétiques de changement de phase : pas de surfusion, taux de cristallisation élevé ;
a/ réalisation d'un matériau MCP sous forme de poudre;
al/ réalisation d'un matériau MCP sous forme de poudre ;
a2/ réalisation d'un matériau catalytique sous forme de poudre;
bl/ mélange des poudres de matériaux catalytique et MCP ;
cl/ recuit du mélange au-dessus de la température de changement de phase du matériau MCP;
a' 1/ réalisation d'un matériau MCP sous forme de poudre ;
a'2/ réalisation d'un matériau catalytique sous forme d'une structure ouverte ; b'/ imprégnation de la structure ouverte du matériau catalytique par le matériau MCP dissous ou dispersé dans une phase aqueuse ou un solvant ;
Description détaillée
- les figures 1 A à 1D illustrent les différentes courbes des caractéristiques d'un matériau à changement de phase (MCP) déjà commercialisé et servant à réaliser une particule hybride du matériau selon l'invention ;
- les figures 2A à 2 E sont des vues schématiques montrant différentes formes de particules hybrides du matériau selon l'invention ;
