Definitions
- the present invention relates to a filtering device for the air sucked in by an engine.
- the filtering device for air sucked in by the engine comprises a parallelepiped-shaped air-box which houses inside it a flat filter which is also parallelepiped-shaped; the filter divides the air-box into an inlet chamber, which is arranged upstream of the filter and communicates with the outside by means of at least one inlet opening, and an outlet chamber, which is arranged downstream of the filter and communicates with the engine suction system by means of at least one outlet opening.
- the filter must have a free area of passage which is sufficiently extended to have a loss of load (i.e. a difference ' in pressure between the air upstream and the air downstream of the filter) which is fairly ' limited, since the higher the loss of load caused by the filter, the higher is the reduction in maximum power which may be generated by the engine.
- the outlet chamber must also have a large enough volume to perform the function of expansion box of the suction system efficiently, in order to store a sufficiently high quantity of filtered air to absorb fluctuations in the quantity of air sucked in by the suction system.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a filtering device for the air sucked in by an engine, said filtering device not having the problems described above and simultaneously being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
- a filtering device for the air sucked in by an engine is provided, according to the appended claims.
- Figures 1 and 2 show two different perspective views of a filtering device for air sucked in by an engine according to the present invention
- Figures 3 and 4 show two different perspective views of the filtering device of Figures 1 and 2 with removal of a lid of an air-box;
- Figure 5 is a plan view of the filtering device of Figures 1 and 2;
- Figure 6 is a plan view of the filtering device of Figures 1 and 2 with removal of a lid of an air-box;
- Figure 7 is a schematic view, in longitudinal cross- section and with parts removed for clarity of the filtering device of Figures 1 and 2;
- Figures 8 and 9 are two different schematic views, in cross-section and with parts removed for clarity of the filtering device of Figures 1 and 2;

- the number 1 denotes in its entirety a filtering device for a suction system of an internal combustion engine (not shown) .
- the filtering device 1 comprises an air-box 2 which defines in its inside a cavity 3 (visible in Figures figure 3, 4 and 6) having two inlet openings 4 towards the outside and two outlet openings 5 towards the suction system of the internal combustion engine 1. Also, filtering device 1 comprises two filters 6 which are housed inside air-box 2 and are arranged between inlet openings 4 and outlet opening 5. Each filter 6 is directly coupled to a corresponding inlet opening 4 and therefore divides cavity 3 into an inlet chamber, which is arranged upstream of filter 6 and communicates with the outside by means of inlet opening 4, and an outlet chamber, which is arranged downstream of filter 6 and communicates with the suction system of the engine 1 by means of both outlet openings 5.
- each filter 6 is' arranged in correspondence to a relative inlet opening 4 and presents a tubular shape (i.e. the inlet hole of each filter 6 coincides with relative inlet opening 4) .
- Each filter 6 comprises a filtering material 7 with a truncated cone tubular shape and two annular end members 8 and 9 which are arranged on opposite sides of filtering material 7; the larger base of filtering material 7 is arranged in correspondence to relative inlet opening 4 in which filtering material 7 is engaged by end member 8, whereas the smaller base of filtering material 7 is arranged inside air-box 2 in which filtering material 7 is engaged by end member 9.
- filtering material 7 of each filter 6 has a cylindrical tubular shape rather than a truncated cone tubular shape .
- filtering material 7 could be made of cotton fabric or non-woven fabric or other fibres enclosed between two layers of thin metal mesh which give form and resistance to said filtering material 7.
- End member 8 of each filter 6 presents a central through hole 10 (forming the inlet hole of filter 6) which is arranged in correspondence to inlet opening 4 to allow the air to flow directly inside filter 6; central hole 10 is surrounded by an annular groove 11 inside which filtering material 7 is inserted and attached inside said groove using adhesive, resin or similar materials.
- End member 9 of each filter 6 presents no openings and supports a cone-shaped central baffle plate 12 and extends inside filtering material 7; a tip (which is round according to a different embodiment not shown) of baffle plate 12 is arranged close to central hole 10 of end member 8.
- baffle plate 12 presents a concave parabolic lateral surface with the concavity turned towards a central axis of symmetry.
- end member 9 presents an annular groove into which filtering material 7 is inserted and attached inside said groove using adhesive, resin or similar materials.
- air-box 2 is cup-shaped and parallelepiped-shaped; therefore, air-box 2 comprises a lower wall 14, two minor lateral walls 15 which are parallel and opposite to each other and extend perpendicularly from lower wall 14, two major lateral walls 16 which are parallel and opposite to each other and extend perpendicularly from lower wall 14, and an open upper end opposite lower wall 14. Said two major lateral walls 16 are interposed between said two minor lateral walls 15, i.e. each major lateral wall 16 connects said two minor lateral walls 15 to each other and is perpendicular to said two minor lateral walls 15.
- Air-box 2 has a removable lid (typically screwed onto lateral walls 15 and 16) which closes the open upper end and forms an upper wall of air-box 2.
- each inlet opening 4 receives air from a dynamic air intake present on a front or lateral wall of the vehicle; in this embodiment, filtering device 1 comprises two tubular supply conduits 18, each of which connects inlet opening 4 with the dynamic air intake present on the front or lateral wall of the vehicle.
- filtering device 1 comprises two tubular supply conduits 18, each of which connects inlet opening 4 with the dynamic air intake present on the front or lateral wall of the vehicle.
- said two inlet openings 4 are envisaged facing and coaxial to each other by means of said two minor lateral walls 15 of air-box 2; said two filters 6 are therefore arranged coaxial to each other and one after the other.
- Said two outlet openings 5 are envisaged side by side by means of said major lateral wall 16. Consequently, said two inlet openings 4 are arranged perpendicularly to said two outlet openings 5.
- Said two filters 6 are joined centrally in correspondence to said two end members 9 which are rigidly connected to each other in an inseparable manner; in other words, by means of joining said two end members 9, said two filters 6 are mechanically connected to each other, forming together a single double filter 6.
- said two end members 9 of said two filters 6 form a single member (i.e. without any interruption in continuity) .
- an inner wall 19 is envisaged which is parallel to minor lateral walls 15 of air-box 2 and centrally divides cavity 3 into two mirror-like half-cavities , each of which contains a corresponding filter 6, communicates with the outside by means of a corresponding inlet opening 4, and communicates with the suction system of the engine by means of a corresponding outlet opening 5.
- inner wall 19 presents a central through hole 20 through which said two end members 9 of filters 6 are arranged.
- inner wall 19 is divided into a lower portion 21 which projects upwards from lower wall 13 of air-box 2 and is attached laterally to said major lateral walls 16 of air-box 2, and an upper portion 22 which projects downwards from lid 17.
- Lower portion 21 of inner wall 19 is connected in an inseparable manner to walls 13 and 16 of air-box 2, and similarly, upper portion 22 of inner wall 19 is connected in an inseparable manner to lid 17.
- an elastic ring 23 is interposed, which is preferably externally arranged around said two end members 9.
- Lower portion 21 of inner wall 19 extends without gaps between said two major lateral walls 16 of air-box 2, whilst upper portion 22 of inner wall 19 presents a transverse dimension that is smaller than the transverse dimension of cavity 3 of air-box 2 measured between said two major lateral walls 15 and 16; in this manner, at the sides of upper portion 22 of inner wall 19 there are relatively wide openings which allow an exchange of air through inner wall 19.
- inner wall 19 presents a free communication opening between the two half-cavities divided by inner wall 19 to allow an exchange of air through said inner wall 19.
- an upper edge of lower portion 21 of inner wall 19 does not touch (and thus is arranged at a certain distance from) a lower edge of upper portion 22; in this manner, when lid 17 is attached (screwed) onto walls 15 and 16 of air-box 2, said two end members 9 are "clamped” between said two portions 21 and 22 of inner wall 19 (with interposition of elastic ring 23 which compensates for any construction tolerance) and are therefore firmly connected to air-box 2.
- a function of inner wall 19 is offering a central anchorage point to filters 6, since it allows “clamping” in a vice of end members 9 between said two portions 21 and 22 of said inner wall 19.
- Filtering device 1 is subject to the mechanical stress present inside the engine well of the vehicle (caused by acceleration of the vehicle and the vibrations of the internal combustion engine) , and the presence of inner wall 19 improves the mechanical connection between filters 6 and air- box 2, increasing the total mechanical resistance of said filtering device 1.
- Elastic ring 23 has both the function of compensating for any construction tolerance and the function of introducing a certain elastic deformability to the mechanical connection system of filters 6 to air-box 2 to reduce the total mechanical stress acting on filters 6. It is important to note that elastic ring 23 has no pneumatic seal function, since inner wall 19 does not divide cavity 3 in an airtight manner and, on the contrary, allows an exchange of air through said inner wall 19.
- a further function of inner wall 19 is centrally dividing cavity 3 into two mirror-like half-cavities , in a manner to create a certain pneumatic division between said two filters 6, ⁇ this pneumat ic divi s ion i s not "absolute", since inner wall 19 is not airtight (on the contrary, it presents wide openings for passage between the two half -cavities) , but nonetheless improves the fluid dynamics of said two filters 6, avoiding reciprocal damaging interference.
- said two inlet opening 4 present a square cross-section whilst said two outlet openings 5 present a circular cross-section; in each filter 6, end member 8 is shaped to obtain geometrical adaptation between the square shape of inlet opening 4 and the round shape of filtering material 7.
- end member 8 is arranged at a certain distance (short, in any case) from minor lateral wall 15 and is connected to inlet opening 4 by means of a connection tube which may be an integral part of minor lateral wall 15 (or may be a single piece with minor lateral wall 15) .
- lower wall 14 of air-box 2 which defines the bottom of cavity 3 presents at least one through drainage hole for drainage of any water which may be present inside cavity 3 (due both to condensation of the humidity in the air sucked in and due to direct entry of rainwater) .
- lower wall 14 of air-box 2 which defines the bottom of cavity 3 presents a slope which converges towards the drainage hole (or towards the drainage holes if several drainage holes are envisaged) ; in other words, the drainage hole represents the lowest point of the entire lower wall 14 of air-box 2 which defines the bottom of cavity 3 in a manner that any water which may be present inside cavity 3 slides towards the drainage hole due to gravity. It is important to note that the drainage hole must be wide enough to allow the water to flow downwards due to gravity, i.e. outside cavity 3 of air-box 2, but must also be small enough to reduce to the necessary minimum any loss of pressure which the drainage hole generates in cavity 3.
- each filter 6 end member 8 is surrounded by a support frame 24 which presents the same shape and dimensions of the transverse section of cavity 3 in correspondence to said minor lateral walls 15; in this manner, support frame 24 "fits" perfectly inside cavity 3 by leaning all of its sides against walls 13, 16 and 17 of air-box 2 and therefore guarantees an optimal mechanical connection between filter 6 and air-box 2.
- walls 13, 16 and/or 17 of air-box 2 could present slots which define housing inside which frame 24 is arranged.
- lid 17 could press from above onto support frames 24 of filters 6 (possibly with a small elastic deformation) to increase the force of the mechanical connection between filters 6 and air-box 2.
- the operator simply has to remove lid 17 (unscrewing the corresponding screws) and then vertically raise said two filters 6 from air-box 2; it is therefore clear that maintenance and cleaning of filtering device 1 is extremely simple.
- Filtering device 1 as described above presents numerous advantages .
- filtering device 1 In the first place, filtering device 1 described above is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and allows rapid replacement of said filters 6 once lid 7 is opened.
- the inlet chamber is also limited to the internal volumes of said two filters 6, whilst the remainder of cavity 3 forms the outlet chamber; the inlet chamber therefore presents an extremely limited volume in favour of the outlet chamber.
- almost the entire volume of cavity 3 is formed of the outlet chamber which therefore presents an extremely large volume; in this manner, the outlet chamber efficiently performs its function as an expansion box of the suction system by storing a sufficiently high quantity of filtered air to absorb any fluctuations in the quantity of air sucked in by the suction system.
- Filtering device 1 described above also presents a high mechanical sturdiness (which allows the mechanical stress present in the engine well of the vehicle to be easily sustained) and a simple and rapid disassembly to extract said two filters 6 (an operation necessary for periodic cleaning of filtering material 7) .
- This result is essentially obtained thanks to inner wall 19 divided into said two portions 21 and 22 which clamp said two end members 9 between them.
- filtering device 1 described above presents a total free area of flow of said filters 6 which is decidedly larger than a similar traditional filtering device provided with a single flat filter; in this manner, filtering device 1 described above presents a limited loss of load (i.e. a difference in pressure between the air upstream and downstream of said filters 6) and therefore allows the engine to supply a higher maximum power.
