Description

Description
WASHING MACHINE WITH MOTOR OVERLOADING PROTECTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a washing machine the safety of which is provided.
[0002] In washing machines, in the steps of washing, rinsing and spin-drying the laundry placed in the drum, the motor rotates clockwise and/or
counterclockwise at the speed suitable for the washing program and provides distribution of laundry in the drum. In the spin-drying step, the motor rotates at high speed and generally in one direction. Therefore, the motors are generally designed to draw more current in the direction rotated in the spin-drying step with regard to the other direction and hence to rotate faster. In washing machines wherein this type of motor is used, the motor is rotated opposite to the spin-drying direction for a long time period and rotated for a short time period in the spin-drying direction in the washing step, thereby providing energy to be consumed less since in total the motor rotates for a longer time in the direction the motor draws less current.
[0003] The motor strains and cannot operate in the desired manner when the load capacity is exceeded or when the type of laundry that absorbs plenty of water like towel, bathrobe, or cotton is loaded. When a control unit detects that the motor is not operating properly as a result of overloading in the mains voltage or of the washing machine, the motor is stopped and put on standby for a while. Afterwards the motor is energized again and continues operating from where it left off or from the beginning of the program. However during spin-drying, when the motor is stopped while rotating in the first direction due to improper operation and operated after a while, it starts rotating in the first direction again. If the problem is not yet corrected, the resulting problem can be much bigger since the motor accelerates in a short time when it starts rotating in the first direction.
[0004] In the state of the art International Patent Document No. WO20091 12222, a washing machine is explained the motor of which is stopped for a while if an abnormality is detected in the signals measured during rotation of the motor. [0005] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washing machine the operational safety of which is provided.
[0006] The washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a control unit that controls the motor which provides the drum to be rotated clockwise and/or counterclockwise. The motor used in the washing machine is designed to draw current at different levels when rotated clockwise or counterclockwise. The current drawn in the first of the rotational directions is more than the current drawn in the second direction. The reason is that the motor torque is designed to be greater in the first direction. If an error is detected in the motor starting to rotate in the first direction, the motor is stopped and provided to rotate in the second direction after being kept waiting for a while.
[0007] In an embodiment of the present invention, if the motor is detected to
accelerate more than desired, the motor is stopped and provided to rotate in the second direction. Delivering uninterrupted energy supply to the motor as a result of the switch supplying energy to the motor being short circuited causes the motor to accelerate gradually. If the error is not eliminated when the motor is stopped, the motor is rotated in the second direction since rotating the motor in the first direction again will cause the motor to suddenly overaccelerate.
[0008] In another embodiment of the present invention, when the motor is
detected to draw more current than what is normal, the motor is stopped in order to prevent heating of the motor. When the motor is to be operated again, the amount of current drawn can be detected without the motor overheating by providing the motor to rotate toward the second direction.
[0009] In an embodiment of the present invention, if the number of successive motor stoppages due to detection of error reaches the number
prerecorded in the control unit memory by the producer, then the program is altogether aborted by deciding that the error cannot be eliminated by stopping.
[0010] By means of the control unit of the present invention, when an error
relating to operation of the motor is detected, the motor is provided to be stopped and rotated in the second direction. Thus, whether or not an error will occur again while the motor starts rotating in the second direction slowly can be detected without jeopardizing safety.
[001 1] A washing machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present
invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[0012] Figure 1 - is the schematic view of a washing machine.
[0013] Figure 2 - is the schematic view of a switch and a motor.
[0014] The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Washing machine
2. Drum
3. Motor
4. Control unit
5. Switch
[0015] The washing machine (1 ) of the present invention comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry to be washed is placed, a motor (3) providing the drum (2) to rotate in the rotational speed suitable for the washing program that consists of main washing, rinsing and spin-drying steps and a control unit (4) that controls operation of the motor (3) with respect to the washing program selected by the user (Figure 1).
[0016] The control unit (4) provides the motor (3) to rotate clockwise and/or
counterclockwise in the washing program according to the method recorded in the memory thereof by the producer and in accordance with the program selected by the user. The motor (3) generally rotates successively clockwise for a time period and counterclockwise for a time period in the washing step thereby providing the laundry to be agitated and cleaned in the drum (2). In the spin-drying step, the motor (3) generally rotates at high speed toward only one direction since it performs the spin-drying process by rotating at high speed.
[0017] The motor (3) is designed such that the current drawn (11 ) while the motor (3) rotates in the first direction (d1) is greater than the current drawn (I2) while the motor (3) rotates in the second direction (d2). Since the torque of the motor (3) in the first direction (d1 ) is greater and draws more current, the spin-drying process is performed in this direction (d1 ). In the washing step, the motor (3) is rotated for a long time period in the second direction (d2) and for a short time period in the first direction (d1 ), thus less energy is provided to be consumed since the motor (3) rotates in the second direction (d2), that is the direction that the motor (3) draws less current, for a longer time period.
[0018] The control unit (4) monitors the operation of the motor (3) in the washing and spin-drying steps and stops the motor (3) when an error is detected. The control unit (4) starts the motor (3) such that the motor (3) rotates in the second direction (d2) after waiting for a time period recorded in the memory thereof. Thus, in case the error in the motor (3) is not fixed during the stopping period, the motor (3) is prevented from starting to rotate in the first direction (d1 ) and to overaccelerate until the error is detected again. The motor (3) is provided to rotate in the second direction (d2) when operated again and if the problem is not yet overcome before accelerating, the number of revolutions is limited until the error is detected since the motor (3) accelerates slowly in this direction (d2).
[0019] In an embodiment of the present invention, the washing machine (1 )
comprises a switch (5) that provides energy to be supplied to the motor (3). The control unit (4) stops the motor (3) upon detecting that the motor (3) is overaccelerated as a result of short circuiting in the switch (5) and provides the motor (3) to rotate in the second direction (d2) when operated again. Thus, if the short circuiting problem of the switch (5) is not corrected, the error can be detected before the motor (3) accelerates.
[0020] In another embodiment of the present invention, in the case the control unit (4) detects that the motor (3) is drawing excessive current, it stops the motor (3) and provides the motor (3) to rotate in the second direction (d2) when operated again. The motor (3) draws excessive current by straining due to overloading of the drum (2) or the uneven distribution of laundry in the drum (2). The motor (3) is overheated when excessive current is drawn. Heating of the motor (3) shortens the life span thereof. If the laundry clinging to the wall of the drum (2) is not scattered, when the motor (3) is stopped after the control unit (4) detects the problem of the motor (3) drawing excessive current, the drum (2) is prevented from moving in an unbalanced manner by accelerating right away by preventing the motor (3) from rotating in the first direction (d1 ).
[0021] In an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit (4) stops the program and alerts the user if the number of errors detected is more than the number recorded in the memory thereof after providing the motor (3) to rotate toward the second direction (d2) upon detection of error.
Consequently, the control unit (4) provides the program to be resumed in cases when the error can be corrected. In cases when the error cannot be corrected, the control unit (4) warns the user by ending the program so that the error does not damage the washing machine (1 ) or harm the user.
[0022] By means of the present invention, in case an error is detected while the washing program is executed, the motor (3) is stopped and waited for some time period and the motor (3) is provided to rotate toward the second direction (d2). Consequently, if the error is not eliminated in the time period the motor (3) remains in the stop mode, the motor (3) is prevented from overaccelerating by rotating toward the first direction (d1) and from damaging the washing machine (1 ) until the error is detected.
[0023] It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the
embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These different embodiments should also be considered within the scope of the claims of the present invention.
