Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of photocatalytic particles in bismuth vanadate of formula BiVO 4 .
- BiVO 4 bismuth vanadate is known for its photocatalytic properties. It is particularly appreciated for the fact that its properties are activated by visible light. Under the action of visible radiation, electron-hole pairs are created, which will help catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions, in particular leading to the degradation of organic compounds. This results in anti-fouling, depolluting or bactericidal properties.
- the subject of the invention is therefore a process for obtaining particles of chemical formula BiVO 4 in which precursors are reacted at a temperature below 50 ° C. of bismuth and vanadium and at least one additive selected from sulphates or phosphonates surfactants comprising at least one hydrocarbon chain.
- the subject of the invention is also particles of the BiVO 4 chemical formula, the surface of which comprises Brnsted sites.
- the particles are in particular likely to be obtained by the process according to the invention.
- the chemical formula of the particles obtained may vary slightly from the strict BiVO 4 formula.
- the molar ratio Bi / V may vary typically between 0.96 and 1.04.
- Oxygen stoichiometry may also vary slightly without departing from the scope of the invention.
- the reaction preferably takes place at ambient temperature, in particular between 15 and 30 ° C., preferably between 20 and 25 ° C.
- the reaction is preferably carried out under atmospheric pressure.
- the reaction preferably takes place in aqueous solution, which avoids the use of solvents that are toxic or harmful to the environment.
- a single bismuth precursor and a single vanadium precursor are preferably used. These precursors are preferably salts or oxides.
- At least one bismuth precursor is preferably selected from nitrates or bismuth chloride. Bismuth nitrate pentahydrate is particularly preferred. At least one vanadium precursor is preferably selected from ammonium vanadate or sodium vanadate. Vanadium oxide can also serve as a precursor.
- the hydrocarbon chain of the sulphate or phosphonate additive is preferably a linear alkyl chain or branched, containing between 6 and 20 carbon atoms, especially between 10 and 16 carbon atoms.
- a sufficiently long hydrocarbon chain makes it possible to slow the transformation from the quadratic phase to the monoclinic phase.
- the counter-ion of the additive may be, for example, sodium (Na + ), lithium (Li + ), potassium (K + ), ammonium ion. It can also be a proton (H + ), so that "sulfate” or "phosphonate” is also meant to cover the conjugated acids.
- Sodium dodecyl sulphate and tetradecyl phosphonic acid have been found to be particularly advantageous.
- the additive has been found to be capable of creating on the surface of the particles acid sites of Br0nsted.
- the presence of these sites leads to a very strong adsorption of organic compounds on the surface of the particles, which leads to a faster degradation of these compounds, via a more efficient degradation mechanism.
- the presence of the additive also makes it possible to create a particular morphology and to significantly increase the specific surface area of the particles.
- the relative proportion of the precursors of bismuth and vanadium is preferably chosen such that the atomic ratio Bi / V is between 0.9 and 1.1, especially between 0.95 and 1.05. A ratio of 1 is preferred. These conditions make it possible to promote the formation of the BiV04 phase, avoiding the formation of other defined compounds.
- the molar concentration of vanadium and / or bismuth is preferably between 0.01 and 0.5 mol / l, especially between 0.05 and 0.2 mol / l.
- the concentration of additive is preferably between 0.005 and 0.05 mol / l, especially between 0.008 and 0.02 mol / l.
- PH during the reaction is generally acidic, typically less than 2, or even close to 1.
- the duration of the reaction may vary from a few hours to a few days, typically from 2 hours to 1 week.
- the particles are recovered by known techniques, for example by centrifugation.
- the particles are preferably washed.
- Br0nsted sites can be determined by infrared spectroscopy after contacting the particles with pyridine. Br0nsted sites will lead to protonation of pyridine, associated with the presence of peaks at the following wave numbers: 1640 cm -1 , 1540 cm -1 and 1490 cm -1 .
- the average particle diameter is preferably between 500 nm and 5 micrometers, in particular between 700 nm and 2 micrometers.
- the addition the additive makes it possible to reach very high specific surfaces, despite the micrometric size of the particles. It is thus no longer necessary to use nanometric particles, which can pose toxicological problems related to their ability to be inhaled.
- small nanoparticles may be less effective in photocatalysis because facilitating electron-hole recombination.
- the particles obtained have a gap of about 2.4 eV between the conduction band and the valence band.
- a radiation whose wavelength is of the order of 515 nm is therefore capable of activating photocatalytic reactions.
- the particles according to the invention preferably comprise scheelite type monoclinic phase crystals and zircon type quadratic phase crystals.
- the most active phase in photocatalysis is the scheelite phase, it appears that the presence of the other phase increases the photocatalytic efficiency. This effect, perhaps due to a better separation between electrons and holes, has been described in particular with respect to titanium oxide, for which mixtures of anatase and rutile phases have proved to be particularly active, while the rutile phase in she herself is weakly active.
- the monoclinic phase is preferably a majority, in the sense that its mass proportion is greater than 50%, in particular 60% or 65%.
- the specific surface area of the particles is preferably greater than or equal to 10 m 2 / g.
- the invention also relates to a substrate coated with at least one layer comprising particles obtained by the process according to the invention or comprising particles according to the invention.
- the particles are preferably bound to the substrate by means of an inorganic binder.
- Organic binders can indeed be rapidly degraded by the photocatalytic action of BiVO 4 particles.
- the inorganic binder is preferably based on an oxide, especially silica. It may be silica, in particular obtained by a sol-gel type process.
- organometallic precursors for example tetraethoxyorthosilicate (TEOS), condense on the surface of the substrate.
- TEOS tetraethoxyorthosilicate
- the deposition of the soil can be carried out by dipping (dip-coating), coating (cell-coating) or spraying (spray-coating).
- a heat treatment step is generally necessary to remove the solvent, densify the layer, and make it mechanically resistant.
- the binder, especially silica can be rendered porous. It may in particular comprise mesopores whose pores have a diameter of between 2 and 50 nm.
- Such mesopores can be obtained using a structuring agent or "template”, generally based on amphiphilic molecules such as surfactants or block copolymers. These agents have the ability to organize themselves into micelles around which the precursors will precipitate and condense.

- the morphology of the particles according to the invention is illustrated in FIG. 1.
- a very characteristic surface texturing in sheets can be observed.
- This particular morphology is very different from that illustrated in Figure 2, in relation to the particles of the comparative sample, synthesized without adding SDS.
- the morphology is also very different from that obtained by Yang et al (Material Chemistry and Physics 114, 2009, pp 69-72) using a hydrothermal synthesis.
- the Bi / V ratio measured by X-ray induced photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) is 1.8, which reflects a large bismuth overconcentration at the extreme particle surface.

- the same ratio, measured for the comparative sample is only 1.3.
- the infrared spectra of FIG. 3 are those obtained for a sample according to the invention (curve A) and for the comparative sample (gray curve B). Peaks can be seen at wave numbers of 1640 cm -1 , 1540 cm -1 and 1490 cm -1 , characteristic of the protonation of pyridine, and this protonation demonstrates a strong OHN bond between the surface of However, no trace of pyridine protonation is visible on the infrared spectrum of the comparative sample, which demonstrates the absence of sites. of Br0nsted. on the other hand is observed the presence of coordination bonds, visible to wavenumber 1593 cm "1, 1574 cm” 1 and 1440 cm "1. These links are the sign of the presence of Lewis sites.
- the infrared spectra thus highlight the fact that the bonds between the pyridine and the particles according to the invention are much stronger than the bonds observed with the particles of the comparative sample, synthesized without SDS, thanks to the presence of the sites Br0nsted.
- the temperature Complete desorption can be determined by heating the pellets prepared previously for 15 minutes at different temperatures: 50, 100 then 150 ° C. This heating has the effect of desorbing the chemisorbed pyridine. The presence or absence of pyridine still chemisorbed is evaluated by infrared spectroscopy. In the case of the comparative sample, the total desorption takes place for a temperature of between 50 and 100 ° C. In contrast, the sample according to the invention still contains pyridine chemisorbed at a temperature of 150 ° C.
- the mechanism of degradation of organic compounds by photocatalysis can be followed by methods of spectroscopy in the visible.
- a sample of particles is added to an aqueous solution of rhodamine B.
- concentration of rhodamine B is chosen so that after adsorption in the dark the absorbance of the solution is about 1. After stirring during one hour in the dark, the mixture is exposed to visible light.
- the amount of particles added to the solution is adapted so that the particle surface is identical for the sample according to the invention and the comparative sample. Given the difference in specific surface area, the amount of particles according to the invention (0.125 g) is much smaller than the amount of comparative particles (0.5 g). Nevertheless, in both cases, rhodamine B is completely degraded after 320 minutes.
- the invention thus makes it possible to obtain an equivalent activity for a much smaller quantity of particles, or a much higher activity for the same quantity of particles.
- the spectra obtained for the comparative sample are characterized by a decrease in the intensity of absorption of the peak located at the wavelength of 555 nm. Such an evolution is characteristic of a degradation of the conjugated structure of the molecule by radicals present in the aqueous solution.
- the spectra obtained for the sample according to the invention are essentially characterized by a shift of the absorption peak towards the shortest wavelengths, witnessing successive N-deethylation reactions.
- This degradation mechanism involves radicals present on the surface of the particles and not only in solution. This confirms on the one hand the better adsorption of organic molecules by the particles according to the invention.
- this mechanism which involves an action of the radicals present on the surface of the particles is much more effective in the absence of any liquid medium, for example when it is a question of cleaning up gases or of making a surface self-cleaning. In other words, thanks to the presence of Br0nsted sites, the better adsorption of the organic molecules by the particles according to the invention will greatly facilitate their subsequent degradation.
- Layers comprising particles according to the invention were made as follows.
- the mixture comprising the particles and the sodium dodecyl sulphate additive is deposited on a clear soda-lime-calcium glass substrate by spin-coating. After degradation of the additive by exposure to ultraviolet radiation for 24 hours, a layer consisting of BiVO 4 particles is obtained.
- Layers comprising comparative particles have also been produced by spin-coating a solution of particles in THF (tetrahydrofuran).
- the measurement of the photocatalytic activity is carried out as follows:
- deposition of stearic acid 60 microliters of a solution of stearic acid dissolved at a rate of 10 g / l in ethanol is deposited by spin-coating on the sample,
- the lamp used is a lamp simulating solar radiation (Suntest type xenon arc lamp), to which a UV filter is optionally added,
- the area A decreases linearly with time according to a coefficient k, defined as the photocatalytic activity.
- the photocatalytic activity of the layer under visible UV + irradiation is of the order of 1.25 ⁇ 10 -2 ⁇ m -1 .
- the photocatalytic activity of a titanium oxide layer 15 nm thick deposited on an alkali barrier layer is only 0.25 ⁇ 10 -2 .min -1 .
- the photocatalytic activity is 6, 2.10 ⁇ 3 .min "1.
- the photocatalytic activity of the layers comprising the comparative particles (synthesized without additive) is 0, 6.10 ⁇ 3 .min "1 .
- the photocatalytic activity of a titanium oxide layer under the same conditions is zero.
- the particles according to the invention therefore make it possible to obtain layers having a very high photocatalytic activity under irradiation with visible light.

Description
PARTICULES DE VANADATE DE BISMUTH ET LEUR PROCEDE
D'OBTENTION
