Other methods of tensioning the chain and clamping the chain bar are well known.

- the motor armature component 52 uses a surface-mounted eight-pole high-performance magnet construction.
- the motor field component includes three coil windings (20) ( Figure 2 ) each with an associated Hall Effect sensor. These provide a position signal to the microprocessor which is therefore able to control the current on the coils to deliver the required rotation at optimal efficiency, as is known for such motors. Additionally the same PCB is connected to a detachable battery pack (45) in the case of a cordless product. In preferred embodiments using Li-ion cells, the PCB additionally receives a temperature monitoring signal and is therefore also able to provide the necessary protection for the cells to avoid over temperature, over-current or over-discharge. The PCB also is connected to a simple low current switch (12) as the primary on/off signal. In normal running when this switch is opened the motor and chain are allowed to decelerate freely.
- the rapid stop kick back brake activated by contact with the front hand guard actuates a high current capacity double change-over rocker switch (14) which disconnects the incoming coil driving voltage 15 ( Figure 2 ) from two of the three motor coils and introduces a controlled resistive connection through braking resistors (21) directly across all three of them, as shown in Fig. 2 .
- the motor coils are enabled to provide a very rapid regenerative braking effect.
- the resistance value is selected to provide an upper limit to the regenerative current whilst ensuring the consequent braking performance stops the motor and the chain rapidly, typically in 0.15 seconds or less. This provides a very simple, low wear and high reliability brake construction, using one double-pole changeover switch only.
- the motor field and armature components may be located directly into the housing mouldings as shown in Figure 3 so saving the complexity and weight of motor end support brackets. This is a further particular advantage of the present invention.

Claims (8)
- Kettensäge, die ein Kettensägengehäuse umfasst, das Gehäuseformkomponenten umfasst, wobei die Kettensäge ferner eine Kette umfasst, die durch eine Kettenstange getragen und mittels eines Elektromotors (10) angetrieben wird und eine Nachlaufbremsfunktion und eine Rückschlagbremsfunktion enthält; dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Elektromotor (10) ein elektronisch kommutierter Elektromotor (10) ist, der mindestens drei Spulenwicklungen (20) aufweist, und die Nachlaufbremsfunktion und/oder die Rückschlagbremsfunktion mittels eines Kettensägensteuersystems 44 bereitgestellt werden, das einen Bremsschalter (14) umfasst, der der Nachlaufbremse und der Rückschlagbremse zugeordnet ist und ausgelegt ist, von jeder der Motorspulenwicklungen (20) mit Ausnahme mindestens einer davon eine Antriebsspannung zu trennen und über die getrennten Motorspulenwicklungen eine gesteuerte Widerstandsverbindung anzulegen.
- Kettensäge nach Anspruch 1, wobei die Nachlauffunktion und/oder die Rückschlagfunktion mindestens die Rückschlagfunktion ist.
- Kettensäge nach Anspruch 1 oder Anspruch 2, wobei der Motor drei Spulenwicklungen (20) aufweist und das Steuermittel über jede der Wicklungen eine gesteuerte Widerstandsverbindung anlegt.
- Kettensäge nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Motor die Kette in einer direkten, getriebelosen Konstruktion antreibt.
- Kettensäge nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Feld- und Ankerkomponenten des Motors (10) direkt auf mindestens einer der Gehäuseformkomponenten angebracht sind.
- Kettensäge nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Motor (10) eine Motorwelle aufweist und die Motorwelle einen Axiallüfter trägt.
- Kettensäge nach Anspruch 6, wobei die Kettensägensteuerschaltung innerhalb des Kettensägengehäuses derart angebracht ist, dass er Axiallüfter im Gebrauch auf die Steuerschaltung einen Kühlluftstrom aufbringt.
- Kettensäge nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, die ferner eine Batterieeinheit umfasst, die eine wiederaufladbare Batterie, um dem Elektromotor (10) Leistung zuzuführen, umfasst, wobei die Batterieeinheit eine Batteriesteuerschaltung enthält, um das Aufladen und Entladen der Batterie zu steuern, und die Batteriesteuerschaltung innerhalb der Kettensägensteuerschaltung vorgesehen ist.
