Claims (10)

  1. An ascender/descender appliance for ascending and descending on a rope, comprising :
    - a body (11) having attachment means to be connected to the user's harness,
    - a clampling device arranged outside the body, and able to be released on load,
    characterized in that
    - the clamping device comprises a chain of metal links (18) formed by a succession of friction elements (19) articulated on one another by connecting rods (21) to form a series of gaps (22) for zigzag passage of the rope (23),
    - the friction elements (19) of the chain of links (18) comprise diabolos (20) parallel to one another and extending perpendicularly to the body (11), successive diabolos thus being positioned on opposite sides of the rope,
    - the top part of the chain of links (18) collaborates with means for triggering clamping of the ascender device under the weught of the user, unlocking being performed on load when manually pressing is maintained on top link 24;
  2. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 1, characterized in that the means for triggering clamping are formed by a spring (25) designed to separate the connecting rods at the top of the chain urging the top friction element (19) into contact against the rope (23).
  3. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 2, characterized in that the spring (25) is formed by a torsion spring threaded onto the pivot-pin (26) of the top link (24), the opposite ends of the spring (25) pressing against stops (27, 28) provided on the last and penultimate connecting rods (21).
  4. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 1, characterized in that the means for triggering clamping comprise a rider (29) framing the top friction element (19) and presenting a U-shaped structure rubbing against the rope (23).
  5. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 4, characterized in that the inner surfaces of the rider (29) in contact with the rope are provided with ribs (30).
  6. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 4, characterized in that the inner surfaces of the rider (29) are coated by a gum- or rubber-based material.
  7. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 1, characterized in that, at one of the ends (EX1) of the body (11), the attachment means comprise a first opening (16) for attaching a first karabiner (17) connected to the harness, and a second opening (31) for attaching a second karabiner (32) connected to the top strand of the rope when a double rope is used.
  8. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 7, characterized in that the chain of links (18) is arranged at the other end (EX2) of the body (11), which is formed by a pair of parallel flange-plates (12, 13) separated from one another by spacers (14).
  9. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 8, characterized in that a pulley (34) is arranged between the flange-plates (12, 13) to facilitate the sliding movement of the rope (23) on climbing, or upward hoisting.
  10. The ascender/descender appliance according to claim 1, characterized in that the means for triggering clamping comprise a pair of tongues (50, 51) articulated on the respective pivot-pins (26) of the top link and of the penultimate link, each tongue (50, 51) having an opening (52, 53) for passage of the rope (23).
