Definitions
- the invention is in the polymer sector and relates to the use of olefinically unsaturated compounds of specific structure as emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization.
- Emulsion polymerization is a special process of polymerization in which sparingly water-soluble olefinically unsaturated monomers are emulsified in water with the aid of emulsifiers and polymerized using water-soluble initiators such as potassium peroxodisulfate or redox initiators.
- water-soluble initiators such as potassium peroxodisulfate or redox initiators.
- Anionic and / or non-ionic surfactants are the essential constituents. By means of the micelle structure in the aqueous solution, they ensure the process of emulsion polymerization.
- Copolymerizable emulsifiers are very much in demand in the industry because they are completely or partially incorporated into the growing polymer chain and thereby reduce, for example, the migration of free emulsifier molecules in the end-use product.
- Copolymerizable emulsifiers occupy a middle position between monomers and conventional emulsifiers. In this case, they must be matched in terms of their reactivity to the monomer system used and must not adversely affect the properties of the resulting polymer. At the same time, they must not lose their emulsifying properties through the presence of a reactive group. Due to this combination of special properties, the industry is in great demand for new copolymerized emulsifiers.
- these should in particular cause only a small coagulation occurs.
- these copolymerizable emulsifiers should be pourable or pumpable in an aqueous form.
- the use as emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization should make it possible to obtain latices which have improved electrolyte resistance, alkali resistance and / or viscosity properties compared to latexes prepared with comparable non-copolymerizable emulsifiers.
- the invention relates to the use of (meth) acrylic acid esters which are selected from compounds of the general formulas (I) and (II), in which
- A is an alkyl radical having 3 to 40 carbon atoms
- X and Y are independently hydrogen or a methyl radical
- B is hydrogen or a sulfate or phosphate group and n is a number in the range of 0 to 40. as copolymerizable emulsifiers in the emulsion polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers.
- Y is hydrogen or a methyl radical
- n is a number in the range of 0 to 40.
- Orientation of the methyl group within the structural element for each PO block can be realized in two ways, namely as - (0-CH 2 -CH (CH 3 )) - or - (O-CH (CH 3 ) -CH 2 ) -.
- the alkyl radical A is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 3 to 40, preferably 10 to 20, particularly preferably 12 to 18 C atoms. Very particular preference is given to the following alkyl radicals A: lauryl (C 12), myristyl (C 14), cetyl (C 16), stearyl (C 18), oleyl (olefinically unsaturated C 18) and isotridecyl.
- the compounds of the formula (I) and (II) according to the invention are formally esterification products of acrylic acid and / or methylacrylic acid.
- the degree of alkoxylation n according to the invention is from 0 to 40, preferably from 1 to 20, particularly preferably from 2 to 10.
- Group B is hydrogen or a sulfate or phosphate group.
- B represents a sulfate or phosphate group. It is preferred that the sulfate or phosphate group B is present in neutralized form.
- the neutralization of the sulfate or phosphate group can be done, for example, with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides such as sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium hydroxide or with amines such as ammonia or ethanolamines.
- the salt form of the compounds (I) and (II) is characterized by good solubility in water.
- B is hydrogen.
- the compounds (I) and (II) are then non-ionic and especially, but not exclusively, suitable for the purpose of improving the stabilization of the latexes against ionic influences.
- the compounds of the formula (I) and (II) are obtainable, for example, by epoxidizing commercial alpha-olefins using formic acid and hydrogen peroxide, then opening the epoxide ring of the intermediate 1 obtained by means of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, the OH group of the if desired, alkoxylated (reaction with ethylene oxide and / or propylene oxide) and finally, if desired, sulfation or phosphation of the terminal OH group.
- the last step is optional or mandatory with regard to the meaning of group B: if B is hydrogen, this step is omitted, if B has the meaning of a sulfate or phosphate group, this step is performed.
- the compounds (I) and (II) to be used in the present invention are easily and completely polymerized together with other olefinically unsaturated monomers different therefrom, promoting the formation of a foam-free and homogeneous emulsion.
- the compounds (I) and (II) are preferably used in partial or completely neutralized form ("salt form" of the sulfate or phosphate group) in the emulsion polymerization by partially or completely neutralizing the compounds (I) by customary methods, for example with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides such as sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium hydroxide or with amines such as ammonia or ethanolamines. and (II) is characterized by a good water solubility.
- a further subject of the invention is a process for the preparation of polymers by emulsion polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers, in which the abovementioned compounds (I) and (II) are used as copolymerizable emulsifiers.
- the inventive method using the compounds (I) and (II), if B means a sulfate or phosphate group, in particular in salt form, is characterized in that polymers are obtained with particular shear and electrolyte resistance and low coagulum content.
- latices are obtained, which in turn are additionally distinguished by a particular water resistance and stability to temperature fluctuations and in which no migration of the emulsifier into the film can be detected.
- Another advantage of the method according to the invention is that it is virtually foam-free and the formation of volatile organic substances is reliably avoided. Since the emulsifier (I) and (II) is incorporated virtually quantitatively into the polymer, there are no biodegradability problems associated with its use. Furthermore, the olefinically unsaturated esters (I) and (II) show virtually no tendency to homopolymerize.
- the latices according to the invention can be used, for example, in the coating industry. It has been found that coatings produced with the latices according to the invention have a higher corrosion protection than conventional coatings. This is set forth in Examples 5 and 6 (Comparative Example).
- the olefinically unsaturated esters of the general formula (I) and (II) to be used according to the invention are suitable as emulsifiers in the emulsion polymerization of virtually all industrially important, essentially water-insoluble monomers, but preferably (meth) acrylic, styrene and vinyl compounds.
- Typical examples of these monomers are vinyl aromatics, e.g. Styrene, divinylbenzene or vinyltoluene, polymerizable olefins and diolefins such as propene, butadiene or isoprene, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with linear or branched alcohols having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, especially of alcohols having 1 to 8 carbon atoms and-particularly preferred of methyl esters, ethyl esters and butyl esters thereof, vinyl esters of acids having 2 to 12 carbon atoms, in particular vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl 2-ethylhexanate and vinyl laurate, vinyl alkyl ethers having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and the like.
- vinyl aromatics e.g. Styrene, divinylbenzene or vinyltoluene
- polymerizable olefins and diolefins such
- Monomers which are selected from the group of the alkyl acrylates, styrene acrylates, VeoVa compounds or mixtures thereof, with or without addition of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, are particularly preferred in the context of the present invention.
- the monomers can be homopolymerized in the presence of the copolymerizable emulsifiers (I) to be used according to the invention or copolymerized with other of the abovementioned compounds from the above list.
- copolymerizations can be carried out in which up to 50 wt .-% of other, of the compounds of the invention (I) and (II) are involved, in itself partially or completely water-soluble monomers, for example, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, half esters of Maleic or fumaric acid having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, crotonic acid and / or itaconic acid.
- acrylonitrile methacrylonitrile
- half esters of Maleic or fumaric acid having 1 to 8 carbon atoms acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, crotonic acid and / or itaconic acid.
- the monomers used in the process according to the invention are combinations of styrene / butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate / butyl acrylate or styrene / butadiene.
- the compounds (I) and (II) can be used according to the invention in combination with known nonionic and / or anionic co-emulsifiers. This can lead to dispersions with increased stability, for example against shear forces, temperature effects and electrolytes.
- the co-emulsifiers are added in amounts of 0.5 to 5, preferably 1 to 3 wt .-%, based on the totality of the monomers used. It is possible to initially introduce the coemulsifiers together with the emulsifiers at the beginning of the polymerization or to meter them in during the course of the polymerization.
- Another variant provides to produce a pre-emulsion using or co-using the co-emulsifiers and metering these in the course of the polymerization. It is also possible to post-stabilize using the invention Acrylic acid and / or methacrylic acid obtained dispersions to add these with co-emulsifiers.
- the compounds (I) and (II) to be used according to the invention can also be used together with protective colloids.
- protective colloids are fully or partially saponified homo- and / or copolymers of vinyl acetate, e.g. partially saponified polyvinyl acetate, or fully saponified copolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl ethers.
- Preferred copolymers have 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the ether portion of the polyvinyl ether.
- Other protective colloids may be derived from polysaccharides. Cellulose ethers such as hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, ethylcellulose or cellulose mixed ethers are particularly suitable.
- polyacrylamide and its copolymers with acrylic acid, acrylonitrile or acrylic esters are also suitable.
- casein, gelatin, gum arabic as well as natural starch and substituted starch derivatives such as hydroxyethyl starch are suitable protective colloids.
- the emulsifiers (I) and (II) in the emulsion polymerization in amounts of from 0.1 to 25 wt .-% - based on the sum of the monomers - a.
- aqueous dispersions customarily to be prepared using the compounds (I) and (II) in the first step of the process have in practice from 15 to 75% by weight of polymerized monomers (dry residue) in water or a mixture of water and water-soluble organic solvents.
- the range is from 20 to 60% by weight of dry residue; however, for specific applications also aqueous dispersions with less than 15 wt .-% dry residue produced.

Description
(I)
(H)
Ganz besonders bevorzugt sind folgende Alkylreste A: Lauryl (C 12), My- ristyl (C 14), Cetyl (C 16), Stearyl (C 18), Oleyl (olefinisch ungesättigtes C 18) und iso- Tridecyl.
Phosphatgruppe B in neutralisierter Form vorliegt.
