Definitions

  • the invention relates to an anchor formation such as might be suitable for retention in a building structure, and especially a masonry wall.
  • the invention relates additionally to a wall tie for tying together and spacing apart two leaves of a plural leaf cavity wall of a building incorporating such an anchor formation.
  • the masonry units are normally laid on a bed of mortar.
  • an anchor formation into the wall construction which includes a projecting portion extending beyond the wall surface, for example for attachment to another structure to transfer loads.
  • a particular example of use of such an anchor formation is in a two part wall tie for a plural leaf cavity wall of a building or the like.
  • Such wall ties provides a means to connect two leaves of a cavity wall in a way that allows both leaves to share the load (usually wind load).
  • Wall ties transfer load from the outer leaf to the inner leaf in tension and/or compression.
  • an anchor formation is embedded in a wall leaf, for example in a bed of intermediate material such as a mortar bed, with a projecting portion on a cavity side of the leaf. In one arrangement this projects only a minor part of the span of the cavity and serves to engage with a second part that spans the major part of the cavity and is anchored at a distal end into a second wall leaf, for example in the mortar bed thereof.
  • Particular examples of the invention are described with this possible application in mind. However, the invention is not limited to such application. Other circumstances can be envisaged where it might be desirable to provide an anchor formation projecting from a wall leaf, for example to hang or otherwise attach some secondary structure, for a range of applications.
  • Anchor formations comprising generally flat rigid strips of material, for example stainless steel or other metal sheet, round or flattened wires etc, which are adapted to be received within a structure, such as within the layer of mortar or like intermediate material disposed between courses of masonry of a masonry wall (hereinafter a mortar bed), so that a major part is received therein and a minor part projects therefrom for the attachment of a secondary structure.
  • a secondary structure might be a secondary part of a two part wall tie, and the projecting portion of the strip or wire might be provided with means onto which that secondary part can engage.
  • an anchor formation such as might be suitable for retention in a building structure, and especially a masonry wall, comprising:
  • the received portion may be any suitable structure including round or flattened wire, strip etc.
  • the received portion is in the preferred case a generally flat elongate structure.
  • the projecting portion may be any suitable structure including round or flattened wire, strip etc, whether integral with or separately formed from the received portion.
  • the projecting portion is in the preferred case a generally planar projecting structure.
  • the at least one stabilising formation is then provided projecting out of the plane of the generally planar projecting structure, and preferably at least one stabilising formation projecting out of the plane of the projecting structure in either direction (that is, on either side of the said plane).
  • the received portion is received generally horizontally, for example within the layer of mortar or like intermediate material disposed between courses of masonry of a masonry wall (hereinafter a mortar bed).
  • the projecting portion projects outwardly therefrom, for example generally horizontally, in the preferred case such that the generally planar projecting structure is disposed similarly horizontally outward from the surface thereof.
  • At least one stabilising formation is provided projecting out of the plane defined by the received portion and the generally planar projecting structure upwardly and/or downwardly (and in the preferred case at least one projects upwardly and at least one projects downwardly).
  • Each stabilising formation defines a rearward face proximal to a forward region of the received portion (and hence proximal to the structure when in situ) that tends to engage with a surface of the structure, for example a wall surface, as the projecting portion flexes under a load such as a load in a direction parallel to the surface of the structure and for example in the case of a vertical wall such as a vertical load in either direction.
  • This stabilises the projecting portion in admirably simple manner. A much greater effective stiffness is obtained in the projecting portion than would otherwise be the case for a given material thickness.
  • the projecting portion may have the same thickness, and for example be contiguous with, the received portion, for example in that each is a flat elongate strip formation, but have a substantial additional effective stiffness conferred by the action of the stabilising formation(s).
  • a relatively thin anchor formation such as a relatively thin flat strip anchor formation, to meet the requirement for a relatively thin elongate received portion, can still be provided with additional structural stiffness in the portion which projects beyond the wall leaf.
  • a flexing load such as a vertical load can only in practice be envisaged in a single direction the principles of the invention could be employed by providing a stabilising formation suitably orientated to react only to flexing in that direction.
  • a stabilising formation is correspondingly provided disposed to project out of the plane of the projecting portion on each side thereof.
  • a single stabilising formation on each side is likely to be enough. There is no need for symmetry. Such an arrangement stabilises against flexing loads in either direction.
  • the received portion and the projecting structure of the projecting portion conveniently lie in the same plane.
  • the projecting structure of the projecting portion conveniently comprises an extension of the received portion mechanically engaged therewith and lying in the same plane.
  • the received portion and the projecting structure are preferably generally planar formations.
  • the projecting structure of the projecting portion has the same thickness as the received portion.
  • at least the generally planar projecting structure of the projecting portion is formed contiguously with the received portion as an integral whole, for example from a single strip of material.
  • Each stabilising formation is preferably integrally formed with the generally planar projecting structure of the projecting portion as an integral whole, and for example comprises a part thereof which is bent to extend out of the general plane defined by the projecting portion and received portion.
  • the anchor formation is formed integrally from a single sheet of suitable rigid material such as metallic material having a generally uniform thickness which is shaped and structured to define a received portion at a first end and a projecting portion at a second end, with the stabilising formations comprising portions of the sheet in the region of the projecting portion bent out of the plane of the sheet to form stabilising formations in the manner above described.
  • suitable rigid material such as metallic material having a generally uniform thickness which is shaped and structured to define a received portion at a first end and a projecting portion at a second end
  • the stabilising formations comprising portions of the sheet in the region of the projecting portion bent out of the plane of the sheet to form stabilising formations in the manner above described.
  • one part of the sheet may be bent in each direction out of the plane of the sheet (upwardly and downwardly with reference to use).
  • a stabilising formation so formed may comprise a part of the sheet bent at 90° relative to the plane of the sheet, but this is not necessary for the invention and other angles may be suitable.
  • a stabilising formation may be separately formed and attached for example by welding. This may be more appropriate in a particular when the projecting portion and/ or the received portion are not formed from a strip of material but comprise, for example, wire formations.
  • a rear edge of such a stabilising formation bears in use on a structural surface of a building structure such as a wall.
  • the rear edge may be suitably shaped to improve this bearing reaction. It is this bearing reaction that creates the additional effective stiffness in the projecting portion in an anchor formation in accordance with the invention.
  • the received portion is generally flat and may for example comprise a rigid strip of suitable material such as metallic material.
  • the projecting portion is preferably a contiguous extension of this strip.
  • the received portion is preferably not absolutely flat, but instead provides some form of keying structure for keying into a mortar bed in use.
  • the received portion may include features of surface roughness, grooves etc, may be apertured, may be provided with an edge serration etc.
  • the received portion may include a plurality of apertures, and for example circular apertures, through the thickness thereof, for example machined in a strip.
  • the received portion may be generally rectangular elongate in a long direction that projects into the structure into which it is received in use.
  • the dimensions of the received portion will vary to some extent dependent upon the load conditions etc.
  • the generally flat strip comprising the received portion is preferably at least 10 mm wide. In the example application it is preferably at least 50 mm long. In the example application it is less than 2 mm thick.
  • a thickness of 0.5 to 1 mm might be preferred.
  • the projecting portion is preferably adapted to engage with a secondary structure.
  • the projecting portion includes engaging means to engage with a secondary structure. These may be formed in, with or on the generally planar projecting structure. Any suitable engagement means can be envisaged, for example in a simple embodiment comprising a threaded or unthreaded hole within generally planar projecting structure of the projecting portion to receive a screw, bolt, hook or like fixing.
  • a suitable secondary structure may be a second part of a two-part masonry tie assembly or a further part of a multi-part masonry tie assembly.
  • a two-part wall tie assembly comprising:
  • the projecting portion of the anchor formation is adapted to project only a minor part of the span of the cavity between the leaves and the further, second tie is adapted to span the major part of the cavity between the leaves.
  • the second tie thus comprises an elongate portion to span the major part of the cavity between the leaves having leaf engagement means to engage within a second leaf of the cavity wall at a first end and anchor engagement means to engage with the projecting portion of the anchor formation at a second end.
  • the second tie comprises a wire tie.
  • the wire wall tie comprises an elongate wire portion extending between two ends to span the cavity.
  • the wire tie comprises a first end having leaf engagement means to engage within a second leaf of the cavity wall, and in particular within a mortar bed thereof.
  • the wire tie comprises a second end having anchor engagement means to engage with the projecting portion of the anchor formation.
  • leaf engagement means and/ or anchor engagement means are integrally formed with and comprise suitable shaped engaging portions of the wire.
  • the leaf engagement means is provided in that the second end is adapted by provision of a suitably shaped bent formation of the wire, for example comprising a generally U- shaped end or other hook-like formation.
  • the U-shaped end has at least two single bends in the wire. Typically, each bend is such as to define an internal an angle that is no more than 90°.
  • the anchor engagement means comprises a hooked portion of the second end of the wire and a co-operably adapted apertured portion of the projected formation.
  • the projecting formation has a plurality of apertures.
  • the elongate portion of the second tie extending between the two leaves of the wall is adapted to shed water.
  • the wire is provided with at least one kink to provide a drip concentrator to shed condensing water within the cavity.
  • the kink may preferably be adapted to project downwardly in use although this is not necessary and a kink in another orientation will still generally be effective as a drip concentrator.
  • anchor formations according to the first aspect of the invention may be provided at either end of a wire tie member.
  • a multi-part wall tie assembly comprising:
  • each anchor formation is adapted to project only a minor part of the span of the cavity between the leaves and the further tie is adapted to span the major part of the cavity between the leaves.
  • the further tie thus comprises an elongate portion to span the major part of the cavity between the leaves having anchor engagement means to engage with the projecting portion of the anchor formation at either end.
  • the further tie comprises a wire tie.
  • the wire tie comprises an elongate wire portion extending between two ends to span the cavity.
  • the wire tie comprises first and second ends having anchor engagement means to engage with the projecting portion of the anchor formation.
  • a masonry wall structure comprising at least one anchor formation in accordance with the first aspect of the invention received within a mortar bed thereof such that the projecting portion projects outwardly of the wall surface and provides a means to engage a secondary structure thereon.
  • the masonry wall structure comprises cellular building blocks, and the received portion of the anchor formation is received within an intermediate bed between successive layers of cellular blocks.
  • a cavity wall comprising:
  • FIG. 1 An embodiment of an anchor in accordance with the invention is represented in Figure 1 in plan view, in a partly fabricated state (top) and in a completely fabricated state (bottom).
  • the anchor formation is formed as a single integral whole 1 from a suitable thin sheet material, for example in the embodiment of stainless steel. It is a particular advantage of the invention that because of the additional stiffening provided by the structures described below the sheet can be kept much thinner than might be the case if its thickness alone was required to give stiffness to react against vertical flexing, for example less than 1 mm thick, and in the embodiment 0.7 mm thick.
  • the sheet can be notionally divided into a received portion R which is intended to be received into a mortar bed of a masonry wall structure, and in particular in the preferred case into a masonry wall structure formed by cellular clay blocks, and a projecting portion P which is intended to project outwardly of the wall surface.
  • a plurality of holes 3 are cut into the sheet in the receiving portion R to provide for a degree of keying into the mortar layer.
  • the precise shape of these apertures is not directly pertinent to the invention, but the circular apertures illustrated are particularly convenient.
  • Shaped side portions 5, 7 are machined into the projecting portion P as illustrated.
  • the shaped side portion 5 is then bent upwards and the shaped side portion 7 is then bent downwards.
  • these form stabilising formations in the manner envisaged by the invention.
  • the received portion R is anchored into a mortar layer of a masonry wall in generally horizontal orientation in such manner that the planar part of projecting portion P projects generally horizontally outwardly therefrom.
  • the projecting portion provides a means to engage a secondary structure, which is effected in the embodiment by provision of the through hole 10 in the horizontal part of the projecting portion.
  • the stiffness of the projecting portion would be insufficient to carry any significant vertical flexing load.
  • the bent side arms 5, 7 of the projecting portion P confer significant additional effective stiffness to the structure.
  • the side arm 7, and in particular the rearward projection 9 thereof comes to bear against the wall surface and provides a degree of additional rigidity.
  • the side arm 5 performs an equivalent function.
  • An adequate stiffness can be conferred by a relatively much thinner strip than would be possible without these side modifications.
  • Figure 2 illustrates an embodiment in which the anchor formation of Figure 1 is combined with a second structure in the form of a wire tie to form a two-part wall tie for a cavity wall structure.
  • the second part 11 comprises an elongate wire with an elongate cavity spanning portion 13, a first end 15 and a second end 19.
  • the elongate wire has sufficient stiffness to transfer loads between two leaf cavity wall without substantial deformation, accommodating and transferring both compressive and tensile forces effectively between the two leaves of the cavity wall.
  • a suitable wire might be 2 to 5 mm thick, and of suitable rigid metallic material. In the specific embodiment 3.3 mm stainless steel wire is used.
  • the first end 15 of the wire tie is bent into a general U-shape, by means of two bends both more acute than 90°, and both generally in the horizontal plane, to provide a simple hook-like engagement structure for embedding into the mortar bed of a second leaf of a cavity wall in familiar manner.
  • this is merely one example of a suitable engagement structure, and there are plenty of other arrangements of anchorage other than two such bends.
  • a thinner strip to anchor into the mortar bed can be particularly desirable in relation to walls comprising cellular building blocks.
  • Cellular blocks are typically fabricated with upper and lower faces with are flat and parallel to each other to higher tolerances than might have been conventional for masonry bricks, and are as a result designed to have much thinner interlayers between courses.
  • the 0.7 mm thin strip 1 is enabled to key into such a thinner layer, which is for example 1 to 2 mm thick.
  • the received portion R of the anchor formation 1 is received in the bed between two courses of cellular blocks in a cellular block wall, comprising the first leaf of a cavity wall structure.
  • the hooked formation 15 is received in a conventional thick mortar bed of a more conventional brick wall with mortar therebetween.
  • the wall tie formation of Figure 2 provides an admirably simple and effective solution to tying together two leaves of a cavity wall, in particular in cases where an outer leaf comprises a conventional brick wall and an inner leaf comprises a cellular block wall.
  • This embodiment is an example only.
  • the invention is not limited to the tying a first leaf comprising a conventional brick wall and a second leaf comprises a cellular block wall.
  • the skilled person will readily appreciate how the principles of the invention may be modified for other combinations of multiple leaf cavity wall, comprising brick, block, combination or other construction.
  • a tie formation can be envisaged having an anchor formation of figure 1 attached at either end of a wire tie member with an elongate cavity spanning portion and a hook formation at each end of the wire tie which engages into the aperture 10 of the respective anchor formations.
  • the received portion R of each anchor formation of the type illustrated in figure 1 is embedded in a respective leaf and the wire tie ties the two anchor formations, and hence the two leaves together.
  • each received portion R of an anchor formation may be received in the bed between two courses of cellular blocks in a cellular block wall.
  • the wall tie formation provides an admirably simple and effective solution to tying together two leaves of a cavity wall in particular in cases where both leaves comprises cellular block walls.
