  • Another problem with the prior art antenna assemblies is that it is difficult to maintain a consistent distance from the metallic vehicle body which is used as a ground in modern motor vehicles. Furthermore since the bumpers are typically located tightly against the body for reasons of design and safety, space behind the bumper may not be available for housing the antenna.

  • a single mounting element 17 is located at one end portion of the support 12 (in use the upper end portion) with the remainder of the carrier hanging downwardly in use.
  • the front surface 13 of the support at its other end portion is provided with resilient bump stops 26 which in use abut the bumper.
  • the bump stops 26 are located on studs or raised bosses (not shown) on the carrier 11. Additionally, or alternatively, a second mounting element 117 (see Fig. 5 ) could be provided at said other end portion of the support 12.
  • the carrier 11 may be formed as a one piece plastics moulding with the mounting element(s) and studs formed integrally with the carrier which is preferably formed from a polyolefinic material such as polypropylene.
  • the support 12 may be curviform and is substantially planar and may be slightly curved to follow the contours of the adjacent portion of vehicle body to maintain a substantially constant spacing of the antenna board from the vehicle body grounding.
  • the antenna board 14, carrier 11, and cable 18 together form a sub-assembly that can be handled using normal care without damaging it.
  • the sub-assembly may be utilised across a range of vehicles.
  • the carrier 11 when mounted on the vehicle is held against a motor-vehicle panel and is secured thereto by fasteners extending through the fixing apertures 25 in the mounting element 17.
  • the antenna is spaced from the ground effect of the vehicle body by the mounting element 17.
  • one suitable location, for the antenna assembly 10 to be mounted to the vehicle body 52, is proximate to the ventilation openings 53 which in most passenger cars are located on both sides of the boot or trunk compartment for pressure equalization when the motor vehicle doors are quickly closed. These openings are covered by the rear bumper 54 and the antenna assembly 10 is hidden behind the rear bumper.
  • the carrier 11 and antenna 14 are mounted externally of the vehicle body before the bumper is fitted. This facilitates the vehicle manufacture. Furthermore, since the antenna 14 is mounted on a separate support 12 from the bumper the likelihood of damage during minor collisions is reduced.
  • the carrier 12 is secured to the body 52 through the mounting element 17 and hangs from the element 17 at a slight inclination such that a foam sealing strip 28 on the PET film layer is substantially horizontal and in use seals against the bumper 54. Since the antenna assembly 10 is outside of the vehicle body 51 within the bumper 54, the antenna will be exposed to weather and occasionally to wet conditions. This has little effect on the workings of the antenna assembly since the assembly 10 is completely sealed and splash proof.

Claims (12)

  1. Ensemble antenne (10) adapté pour être monté sur une carrosserie de véhicule motorisé (52), l'ensemble (10) comprenant un socle (11) ayant un support d'antenne (12) formé à partir d'un matériau diélectrique, le support ayant une surface avant (13) avec une carte de circuit imprimé d'antenne souple (14) dessus, une surface arrière (20) ayant au moins un élément de montage (17) dessus s'étendant à l'opposé de la surface arrière (20) et en utilisation espaçant l'antenne (10) de la carrosserie de véhicule (52), et un câble de signal (18) s'étendant à travers le support (12) est raccordé à la carte de circuit imprimé (14) ; dans lequel le support (12) au niveau de son autre portion d'extrémité est pourvu d'un élément de montage supplémentaire (117) et/ou de butées résilientes (26) sur sa face avant, le support (12) et la carte d'antenne (14) étant formés pour concorder avec les contours de la carrosserie de véhicule (52) de façon à conserver une distance sensiblement constante entre la carte d'antenne (14) et la mise à la terre de la carrosserie de véhicule (52).
  2. Ensemble (10) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel la surface avant (13) est une surface curviforme qui est sensiblement plane.
  3. Ensemble (10) selon la revendication 1 ou la revendication 2, dans lequel l'élément ou chaque élément de montage (17) comprend un manchon creux (24) ayant une bande interne (44) avec des ouvertures de fixation (25) passant au travers.
  4. Ensemble (10) selon la revendication 3, dans lequel la sous-face de la bande (44) est pourvue de nervures de renforcement (46).
  5. Ensemble (10) selon la revendication 3 ou la revendication 4, dans lequel la surface extérieure du manchon (24) est consolidée par des ailettes ou des contreforts espacés (27).
  6. Ensemble (10) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel le support (12) est sensiblement sous forme d'un quadrilatère irrégulier et un élément de montage unique (17) est situé au niveau d'une portion d'extrémité, en utilisation la portion d'extrémité supérieure du socle (11).
  7. Ensemble (10) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel le socle (11) est formé en tant que moulage en plastique d'une seule pièce incluant un ou des éléments de montage (17).
  8. Ensemble (10) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel la carte de circuit imprimé d'antenne (14) est couverte par un matériau en film non conducteur transparent RF (55), de sorte que l'antenne soit scellée au sein de l'ensemble (10) arrimé à la carte de circuit imprimé (14) par un adhésif et/ou des éléments de fixation.
  9. Véhicule motorisé ayant un ensemble antenne (10) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dissimulé derrière un composant de véhicule (53) de sorte qu'il soit dissimulé de la vue, le socle (11) reposant contre un panneau de véhicule motorisé et étant arrimé à celui-ci par des moyens de fixation appropriés associés à l'élément ou aux éléments de montage (17).
  10. Procédé d'installation d'une antenne (15 ; 16) sur une carrosserie de véhicule motorisé (52) dans lequel l'antenne (15 ; 16) est montée sur un socle (11) ayant un support d'antenne (12) formé à partir d'un matériau diélectrique, le support ayant une surface avant (13) avec une carte de circuit imprimé d'antenne souple (14) dessus suivant les contours de ladite face avant, une surface arrière (20) ayant au moins un élément de montage (17) dessus s'étendant à l'opposé de la surface arrière (10) et en utilisation espaçant l'antenne (15 ; 16) de la carrosserie de véhicule (52), et un câble de signal (18) s'étendant à travers le socle (11) est raccordé à la carte de circuit imprimé (14), le socle (11) est alors monté sur la carrosserie de véhicule (52) au niveau d'un site d'installation approprié et en utilisation sera dissimulé par d'autres composants ; dans lequel le support (12) au niveau de son autre portion d'extrémité est pourvu d'un élément de montage supplémentaire (117) et/ou de butées résilientes (26) sur sa face avant, le support d'antenne (12) et la carte d'antenne (14) étant formés suivant les contours de la portion adjacente de la carrosserie de véhicule (52) pour conserver un espacement sensiblement constant de l'antenne (15 ; 16) par rapport à la mise à la terre de la carrosserie de véhicule (52).
  11. Procédé selon la revendication 10, dans lequel l'ensemble (10) est sur le véhicule à proximité d'un pare-chocs de véhicule (54) avant l'installation du pare-chocs arrière de véhicule (54), et l'ensemble antenne (10) est dissimulé derrière le pare-chocs arrière (54) installé ultérieurement.
  12. Procédé selon la revendication 10 ou la revendication 11, dans lequel le socle (11) est monté à l'extérieur de la carrosserie (52), et le câble de signal (18) passe à travers un orifice dans la carrosserie (52) pour être raccordé à un amplificateur RF (56) situé au sein de la carrosserie de véhicule (52) à proximité de l'ensemble antenne (10) pour minimiser la longueur de câble.
