A device for provisional support and handling of a tailgate (2) of a motor vehicle on an assembly line, the tailgate (2) being placed on its frame (17) at the rear part of the body of the vehicle, this device including an operating handle (1) fixed temporarily to the lower part of a tailgate (2) of a motor vehicle, a wedging stop (16) arranged at a site of the upper part of each lateral side of the tailgate (2), between the frame (17) of the tailgate on the body and the said tailgate (2), and an attachment member (11, 14), permitting its fixing with the lining (3) of the tailgate, a space being maintained between at least a portion of the attachment member (11) and the lining (3), characterized in that the handle body (1) is substantially U-shaped, at least one branch of the U being intercalated between the lining (3) of the tailgate and the attachment member (11).
  2. The device according to Claim 1, characterized in that the attachment member (11) includes at least one slot (11a) intercalated between the handle body (1) and the lining (3) with a recess (10) receiving a fixing means (8) of the handle (1) with the lining (3), the lower portion (12) of the slot (11a) being open and creating a space between the said member (11, 14) and the lining (3).
  3. The device according to Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the attachment member (11) is a contact plate (11) partially applied against the lining (3), joggles (18) being provided on the plate (11) to create a spacing between the major portion thereof and the lining (3).
  4. The device according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the attachment member (11) includes a fixing means of the handle (1) with the lining (3) of the tailgate in the form of at least one screw (8) with a nut (8a) crimped against the lining (3) on the face thereof opposite that facing the handle body (1).
  5. A tailgate (2) of a motor vehicle, characterized in that it has a device for support and handling according to any one of the preceding claims.
  6. The tailgate (2) of a motor vehicle according to the preceding claim, characterized in that, when the handle includes an attachment member (11, 14) with the lining (3), a play is created between this member (11, 14) and the lining (3).
