Definitions

  • the invention relates to an acoustic loudspeaker using a "distributed mode" type loudspeaker.
  • a diaphragm In a conventional loudspeaker, a diaphragm, generally of conical shape, is driven in a coherent pistonic movement, that is to say a movement of which, ideally, the amplitude and the phase of the displacement are constant over the whole extent of the diaphragm.
  • the diaphragm which is generally flat, is vibrated in a complex diagram where the amplitude and phase of the different points of the diaphragm are ideally distributed in a completely decorrelated manner, ie the diaphragm appears to be vibrating randomly over the extent of its surface, contrary to the coherent vibration of the membrane in a high position. conventional speaker.
  • a transducer placed at a precise location of the radiant panel, determined according to the mechanical characteristics of the panel (its mass, its acoustic damping coefficient, its structural rigidity ) as well as its geometry, in order to distribute the vibration mode over the entire surface of the latter in a manner so complex that it can be considered as random.
  • a filtering stage is necessary, so as to adapt the power delivered globally by the transducers as a function of the frequency of the signal. to reproduce: typically, in the lower spectrum, the two transducers can be excited simultaneously at full power, while in the high end it will be desirable to limit the excitation to one of them to avoid the appearance unwanted vibrations or pests.
  • This adaptation is obtained by a series RC type passive filter which bypasses one of the transducers at the highest frequencies.
  • This filtering technique is simple to implement, but it is not without drawbacks.
  • the use of a capacitor of high capacity, electrolytic is likely to introduce non-linearities in the response of the filter.
  • the resistor must be sufficiently sized to dissipate the energy passing through the RC branch instead of crossing the associated transducer, with moreover an unnecessary loss of energy, which has repercussions on the dimensioning of the exciting amplifier stage. the transducers.
  • a passive RC filter does not allow a fine adaptation of the response, so that the efficiency of the speaker, and the linearity of its response, will always be essentially conditioned by the geometry of the panel and the choice of the location. transducers on it.
  • An acoustic loudspeaker using a distributed mode loudspeaker is for example described in the WO 97/09840 A or US 2006/023898 A1 . But in these documents the radiant panel is excited by a single transducer, so that the problem of the power distribution between two transducers does not arise. These documents certainly show configurations with two transducers, but they excite separate radiant panels, for example for the right and left channels. In addition, the power distribution by the amplifiers and the associated filters is between HP and HP HP distributed mode and not, as in the situation envisaged by the present invention, between the two transducers of the same HP mode distributed.
  • the invention is based on the idea of electrically decoupling the transducers, and independently controlling each of them by separate channels of one or more digital audio amplifiers.
  • the digital filtering carried out upstream that is to say before amplification of power, will allow a better distribution of the modes of vibration on the whole sound spectrum, and will avoid the losses in the resistances and the non-linearities inevitable with the prior art, where the transducers were coupled together by a passive filter stage.
  • the active acoustic loudspeaker of the invention is of the type comprising a distributed mode loudspeaker, with an excited non-pistonic radiant panel with random distribution of amplitude and phase by at least two electro-acoustic transducers predetermined non-symmetrical manner on the radiant panel.
  • Amplifier means receive an input signal to be reproduced and are coupled at output to said transducers, and filtering means distribute between the at least two transducers, according to a respective predetermined frequency characteristic, the signal to be reproduced delivered by the amplifying means.
  • the amplifying means comprise a plurality of distinct power stages, each of which is directly connected at the output to a respective transducer, and the filtering means are digital filtering means arranged upstream of the power stages, to apply said respective frequency characteristic predetermined to the signal to be reproduced before transmission of the latter to each of the respective power stages.
  • FIG. 1 schematically, a distributed mode loudspeaker and its associated circuits are shown in accordance with a prior art configuration.
  • the distributed mode loudspeaker 10 comprises a radiant panel 12, typically a rectangular flat panel, excited by two identical transducers 14, 16 placed precisely on the panel, in a non-symmetrical configuration: the first transducer 14 is placed closer from the center of the panel, while the second transducer 16 is disposed in a peripheral region of the panel further from the center.
  • the transducers are powered by an amplifier 18 receiving as input an audio signal 20, preferably a digital audio signal (PCM signal).
  • the amplifier 18 comprises a first filtering stage 22 ensuring an equalization of the signal as a function of the overall response curve of the loudspeaker 10.
  • the signal is then applied to a power amplification stage 24, for example a stage d Class D digital amplification 24, ie a stage operating essentially in commutation, on the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM).
  • the stage 24 typically comprises a MOS switch bridge controlled by a PCM ⁇ PWM conversion stage 26.
  • the signal collected at the output of the bridge is applied to a low-pass filter 28 for the elimination of unwanted frequencies, in particular the switching frequency of the digital amplifier stage 24, as well as its harmonics.
  • the signal at the output of the amplifier 18 is applied to the transducers 14 and 16 via a passive stage 30 of mutual coupling of the transducers and filtering.
  • the two transducers 14, 16 are connected in series, with a passive filter 32 in parallel on the transducer 16 furthest from the center of the panel.
  • the filter 32 is a series RC filter, with an electrolytic capacitor 34 and a calibrated resistor 36, so as to be able to dissipate a portion of the energy produced in the high spectrum instead of applying it to the transducer 16.
  • the filtering thus introduced provides a better distribution of the vibration modes of the panel throughout the spectrum: for the lower frequencies, the two transducers are excited concurrently at full power, while for the highest frequencies it is the transducer 14, the closest to the center, which delivers to the panel most of the mechanical energy.
  • the filtering introduces nonlinearities, in particular because of the use of an electrolytic capacitor 34, as well as a loss of energy, the resistor 36 having to dissipate the energy which, in the high spectrum, is not transmitted to the transducer 16.
  • the figure 2 schematically illustrates an enclosure with a distributed mode speaker and its associated circuits, according to a configuration according to the teachings of the invention.
  • This speaker 40 comprises a distributed mode speaker 10 of the same type as that of the figure 1 , that is to say with a radiant panel 12 excited by two (or more) transducers 14 and 16 placed in a very precise manner, and not symmetrical, on this panel.
  • the speaker 40 also includes a subwoofer 42, which may be of a conventional pistonic type, for the reproduction of the most serious frequencies ( sub-woofer).
  • the separation of the channels towards the two loudspeakers 10 and 42 is effected by a digital circuit 44 receiving the input signal to be reproduced (PCM digital signal), after overall equalization, at 22.
  • the separation is typically done at a crossover frequency or crossover of 200 Hz.
  • the outputs of the circuit 44 are respectively applied to an amplifier 48 intended to supply the distributed-mode loudspeaker 10 (frequencies greater than 200 Hz) and an amplifier 50 intended to feed the top speaker 42 (frequencies below 200 Hz).
  • the stages 22 and 44 are advantageously implemented within the same digital circuit 46, for example a component of the P5 or P5 + type designed and marketed by Parrot SA. These components incorporate a digital signal processor to perform a complete acoustic processing, and have all the usual analog and digital communication interfaces.
  • the output is advantageously on a universal bus type I 2 S.
  • I 2 S universal bus type
  • the amplifier 48 comprises a plurality of class D power stages which, in the example illustrated, are half-bridge stages 52, 54 that can be coupled two by two directly to the terminals of the respective transducer 14. or 16.
  • this coupling has two differences: on the one hand the transducers 14, 16 are not coupled together (whereas they were connected in series in the case of the figure 1 ), and on the other hand the coupling is a direct coupling between the class D output stage and the transducer, without the interposition of passive component.
  • the amplifier stages 52, 54 are controlled by respective PCM ⁇ PWM conversion circuits 56, themselves controlled by a stage 58 of "Channel Mapping" for associating the I 2 S inputs with the respective amplification channels.
  • the power amplifier 48 is advantageously made in the form of a single integrated component, for example of the STA335BW type sold by STMicroelectronics, which has the advantage that it can indeed be used in several different configurations (two identical stereo channels, three type 2.1 channels, single channel at maximum power, ...) by a simple logical parameterization.
  • This property is advantageously used by distributing a single input (the signal to be reproduced by the loudspeaker 10) on two parallel channels CH1 and CH2 to which separate filtering and distinct amplifications are applied, to separately excite each of the two transducers 14, 16
  • the filtering may be carried out in particular by "biquad" type cells 60, 62, 64, 66.
  • the use of four equalization filters on each of the channels CH1, CH2 allows a very fine adjustment of the filtering characteristic of each of these ways.
  • this amplifier may also consist of a component of the same nature as the amplifier 48, but in which the half-bridges are configured between them in two bridges connected in parallel, delivering all the power available on a single output channel, namely the bass speaker 42.
