Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electronic safety system for an electric household appliance with an access door.
- the present invention relates to an electronic safety system for controlling restart of an electric household appliance, such as a washing machine and/or drier or any other similar household appliance, following a blackout, to which the following description refers purely by way of example.
- some known electric household appliances such as washing machines or driers, comprise a casing; a laundry drum housed inside the casing and communicating with the outside through a drum access opening in the casing; and a door for opening/closing the opening.
- Some of the above appliances are equipped with a safety system connecting the door mechanically to a safety switch along a main power circuit connected to the power line of the appliance.
- the safety switch When the door is opened, the safety switch is activated to cut off power and immediately stop the appliance; and, conversely, when the door is closed again, the safety switch in the main circuit is closed to power and restart the appliance.
- Safety systems of this sort have the major drawback of automatically restarting the appliance when the door is closed, by closing the safety switch and so powering the appliance.
- the safety switch in the main power circuit ensures the appliance is stopped immediately if the door is inadvertently opened during the wash cycle, it fails to address other hazard situations.
- the door may be opened, thus allowing a child to climb into the laundry drum.
- accidentally closing the door closes the safety switch, so the appliance can be restarted when power is restored. That is, when power is restored with the safety switch closed, the appliance is restarted automatically, with disastrous consequences for the child inside the drum.
- US 5,276,284 discloses a power switch disabler for disable a power switch provided for the energization and de-energization of electrical equipment contained within a housing.
- the power switch disabler includes a housing provided with an access opening and associated access door.
- the access door is provided with a latch for securing the door in a closed position.
- a switch is provided for the energization and de-energization of at least one electrical component protected by the housing.
- a switch enabler is provided for engaging the defeat lever for selectively enabling and disabling the switch.
- US 4,461,940 discloses a fail-safe device for use in heating appliances including an electric oven and a microwave oven. More particularly it relates to a fail-safe device which includes an electronic control circuit for controlling a main circuit of the heating appliance and a mechanical latch for unlocking actuator levers for fail-safe switches responsive to the opening and closing movement of a door and to the turning on of a switch in the main circuit upon mechanical actuation of a cook start button.
- the door interlock having a restart lockout function for an electrical appliance in order, after the appliance door has been opened during operation of the electrical appliance, to prevent the electrical appliance from being automatically restarted by closing the appliance door again.
- the door interlock according to the invention comprises an interlocking device, which in a closed position interlocks a door of an electrical appliance and in an open position releases the door, and a restart lockout device, which in a release state enables operation of the electrical appliance and in a lockout state prevents operation of the electrical appliance.
- US 4,056,891 discloses a latching circuit is inserted between the door switch of a dryer or any other unattended device and the operating components thereof. Thus when the door switch is opened the circuit is unlatched and a subsequent closure of the door will not resume operation of the device. To allow for such resumption a push-to-close switch is included across the latching circuit whereby a sequence of closing the door switch followed by manual depression of the push-to-close switch will restart the device

- an electronic safety system 6 for determining a hazard condition - corresponding to door 5 being opened when electric power supply to the appliance is cut off, i.e. during a power cut (blackout) - or a safety condition - corresponding to door 5 not being opened during the power cut.
- Electronic safety system 6 is also designed to selectively disable or enable operation of appliance 1 upon detecting the hazard or safety condition respectively.

- V1 a predetermined supply voltage
- Main power circuit 8 comprises a power branch 10 connecting the external electric power source to electric equipment 7; an electronic switch 11 located along power branch 10, and which switches to off or on to respectively disconnect or connect appliance 1 to power source 9; and an electromechanical switch 14 located along power branch 10 and connected to door 5 to open and close when door 5 is moved into the open and closed position respectively.
- electronic switch 11 may preferably, though not necessarily, comprise a TRIAC which receives a control signal SCOM and, depending on control signal SCOM, switches to on or off to respectively enable or cut off electric power supply to electric equipment 7.
- TRIAC which receives a control signal SCOM and, depending on control signal SCOM, switches to on or off to respectively enable or cut off electric power supply to electric equipment 7.
