Abstract

After a firing step is finished, no step of removing a constraining layer is necessary; hence, production steps are simple. Ceramic compacts, such as ceramic substrates, having dimensional accuracy can be produced at high yield by preventing each fired body from being damaged in a constraining layer-removing step. The following layer is used: a constraining layer 31 principally containing a burnable material which does not burn off when the burnable material is fired in a low-oxygen atmosphere but which burns off when the burnable material is fired at an increased oxygen partial pressure. The constraining layer is provided on at least one principal surface of a base layer A' that is processed into a ceramic substrate (ceramic compact) in a firing step. In a first firing sub-step, the base layer provided with the constraining layer 31 is subjected to firing (constraint firing), whereby the base layer A' is sintered. In a second firing sub-step, firing is performed at an oxygen partial pressure greater than that of the first firing sub-step such that the burnable material contained in the constraining layer 31 burns off. Therefore, a subsequent step of removing the constraining layer 31 is unnecessary.
