Definitions

  • the invention relates to a gripper, comprising means for receiving a container and means for operating a discharge mechanism of the container.
  • a container gripper is known and is applied particularly for the purpose of lifting and unloading waste containers into a refuse collection truck, in particular waste containers which are arranged underground.
  • Such waste containers usually have an insertion part which protrudes above the ground, with one or more hoisting elements on the upper side for attaching to a crane mounted on the refuse collection truck.
  • the hoisting elements are often formed by eyes, while the gripper of the truck-mounted crane has one or more corresponding hooks. After attachment the crane hoists the container from or out of the ground and carries it above the load container of the refuse collection truck, into which the container is then unloaded.
  • Waste containers are generally provided with pivoting flaps in the bottom, which are opened when the container is suspended above the refuse collection truck and must be unloaded. These flaps are operated by rods or chains which are trained to the top side of the container and there usually connected to one or more operating members which are accessible from the outside of the container. Most conventional container grippers are provided with suitably formed operating means which can be connected to these operating members, whereby the rods or chains are thus moved and the bottom flaps can be operated.
  • the hoisting element is embodied as a neck with a radially extending flange in which a tube is slidably received.
  • This tube is also provided with a radially extending flange which protrudes above the neck, whereby the neck and tube as it were have the form of a mushroom.
  • the chains with which the bottom flaps of the container are operated are attached to the slidable tube.
  • a receiving part of the gripper is first placed around the neck under the first flange of the container, after which an operating part of the gripper engages below the flange of the movable tube.
  • This operating part of the gripper is then moved upward by means of a hydraulic piston/cylinder combination, wherein the movable tube is thus pulled partially out of the neck of the hoisting element and the chains are tensioned.
  • the container When the bottom flaps of the container are pulled firmly closed in this manner, the container is lifted up by means of the truck-mounted crane and carried above the load container of the refuse collection truck, where the operating part of the gripper is then moved downward again by operating the hydraulic piston/cylinder combination so that the chains are loosened and the flaps on the underside of the container open. After discharge the container is then finally re-placed in the ground, after which the two parts of the gripper are uncoupled from the corresponding flanges.
  • a problem in the construction of a container gripper for lifting and unloading this type of container is that the hydraulic piston/cylinder combination must have a relatively long stroke. This is because it must on the one hand be able to retract the chains sufficiently far to keep the bottom flaps closed during movement, but must on the other allow the chains to be loosened sufficiently to enable the flaps to open properly.
  • the invention now has for its object to provide a container gripper of the above described type, wherein this problem does not occur, or at least does so to a lesser extent.
  • the operating means comprise at least one controllable, telescopic piston/cylinder combination to be connected to the discharge mechanism.
  • Telescopic is here understood to mean that the piston is not only movable through the maximum stroke length relative to the piston, but can be lengthened even further in its extended position.
  • multi-stage or telescopic piston/cylinder combinations are per se known. They have however mainly been used heretofore in tipper trucks, the load container of which must be rotated through a relatively great angle for discharge purposes.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combinations are moreover always single-action, i.e. the piston is extended under the influence of hydraulic pressure, but then retracted again passively, so under the influence of the force of gravity.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combination can comprise a cylinder, a hollow main piston movable therein and at least one optionally hollow auxiliary piston movable in the main piston.
  • the hollow main piston thus functions here in fact as cylinder for the auxiliary piston.
  • this auxiliary piston likewise takes a hollow form, a further auxiliary piston can in turn be received therein, so that an even greater telescopic movement becomes possible.
  • the stroke length of the piston/cylinder combination can thus be varied as desired.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combination is a two-stage combination and comprises a single auxiliary piston.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combination can preferably be operated hydraulically and is connected to a hydraulic circuit.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combination is preferably dual-action, and the hydraulic circuit comprises two feed and discharge conduits for hydraulic fluid connected at different points to the piston/cylinder combination.
  • a stable and uniformly operating gripper is obtained when it is provided with means for guiding the movement of the main piston and/or the auxiliary piston(s).
  • a structurally simple embodiment is achieved here when the piston/cylinder combination is accommodated in a frame bearing the container receiving means, and the guide means comprise at least one guide extending in the frame and at least one carriage which is connected to the main piston and/or the auxiliary piston and which is movable along the guide.
  • the operating means can comprise a connecting element which is carried by the piston/cylinder combination and which is adapted to co-act with a corresponding element of the discharge mechanism of the container.
  • the connecting element is advantageously suspended from the free end of the auxiliary piston, and the carriage is connected thereto or integrated therein. A stable and uniform movement of the connecting element, and therewith of the discharge mechanism, is thus ensured in structurally simple manner.
  • the gripper can be provided with means for blocking the operating means. This can prevent the discharge mechanism of the container being activated unintentionally.
  • these blocking means can advantageously comprise at least one shut-off valve in the hydraulic circuit.
  • This shut-off valve is preferably connected controllably to a sensor accommodated in the container receiving means.
  • the blocking means can thus be activated when the sensor detects that the hoisting point of the container is no longer connected to the gripper, for instance because it has come loose, whereby the piston/cylinder combination continues to hold the container fast via the discharge mechanism. This forms a safeguard against the container falling out of the gripper.
  • the invention also relates to a telescopic piston/cylinder combination evidently intended for application in a gripper as described above.
  • a waste container 1 (fig. 1) is formed by a bottom 2, a number of side walls 3 and an upper wall 4. An insertion opening 5 is formed in upper wall 4.
  • Bottom 2 is formed by two flaps 2A, 2B, which are pivotally mounted along two opposite side walls 4. These bottom flaps 2A, 2B are operated by chains 6, which are trained upward through container 1 and attached to a tubular operating member 7.
  • This operating member 7 is arranged slidably in a neck 8 which protrudes above upper wall 4.
  • Neck 8 has a radial flange 9 which functions as hoisting element of container 1, as will be elucidated hereinbelow.
  • the tubular operating member 7 is also provided with a radial flange 10, which can co-act in a manner to be described below with a gripper 11 suspended from a truck-mounted crane 12 which is shown here only partly and highly schematically.
  • gripper 11 comprises a rectangular frame formed by two side walls 13, a base 14 and an upper wall 15. On one of the open sides the two side walls 13 are connected by strips 16, the function of which will be elucidated hereinbelow.
  • a narrow recess 17 enclosed by a circle segment-shaped edge 18 is formed in base 14. This recess 17 and edge 18 are intended to accommodate neck 8 and flange 9 of container 1 in close-fitting manner, and thus form the container receiving means of gripper 11.
  • this latter is also provided with a tapering infeed part 19, whereby gripper 11 is self-locating.
  • a piston/cylinder combination 20 is suspended in the frame of gripper 11. According to the invention this is a telescopic piston/cylinder combination 20 which, relative to its structural length in retracted position, has a greater stroke length than a conventional, single piston/cylinder combination.
  • Combination 20 is here formed by a cylinder 21, a hollow main piston 22 which is slidable therein, and a solid auxiliary piston 23 which is slidable in main piston 22, and thus forms a two-stage piston/cylinder combination.
  • Cylinder 21 is suspended by means of a pin 24 between two flanges 25 on the underside of upper wall 15 of the frame of gripper 11.
  • a connecting element 28 is suspended from the free outer end of auxiliary piston 23 via a pin 26 and two flanges 27, this element being adapted to receive flange 10 of tubular member 7 with which the bottom flaps 2A, 2B of container 1 are operated.
  • connecting element 28 is provided for this purpose with a narrow recess 29 for close-fittingly receiving the tubular operating member 7 and an edge 30 running therearound which bounds a space for receiving flange 10.
  • a bridging piece 31 which bears flanges 27 and which also serves to prevent tilting movements of flange 10.
  • the telescopic piston/cylinder combination 20 and connecting element 28 thus together form part of the operating means of gripper 11.
  • Gripper 11 is further provided with means for guiding the movements of main piston 22 and auxiliary piston 23.
  • these guide means comprise two rod-like guides 32 extending along side walls 13 of the gripper frame, and a carriage 33 which is movable along one of the guides 32 and which is connected to main piston 22.
  • connecting element 28 is also provided with two openings 34, through which guides 32 protrude. Connecting element 28 thus forms as it were a carriage which is movable along guides 32 and which is connected to auxiliary piston 23.
  • the piston/cylinder combination 20 can be operated hydraulically and is connected for this purpose to a hydraulic circuit, which is for instance mounted on truck-mounted crane 12 or on the refuse collection truck.
  • Two hydraulic conduits 35, 36 run through upper wall 15 of the gripper frame to piston/cylinder combination 20.
  • this combination 20 is dual-action so that conduits 35, 36 can each function as desired as pressure conduit (feed) or as return conduit (discharge).
  • Conduit 35 debouches in a controllable switch valve 37, from which a conduit 38 leads to the upper side of cylinder 21 and a conduit 39 leads to the underside of the hollow main piston 22.
  • Conduit 36 debouches in a shut-off valve 40 to be elucidated hereinbelow, from which a conduit 41 runs to switch valve 37.
  • conduit 35 which then functions as pressure conduit, via switch valve 37 to cylinder 21.
  • Main piston 22 is then urged out of cylinder 21 under the influence of this pressure fluid.
  • the auxiliary piston 23 is urged out of the hollow main piston 22 due to the pressure build-up in main piston 22.
  • the hydraulic fluid in the end of the hollow main piston 22 remote from cylinder 21 is fed back through conduit 39 to switch valve 37, and from there urged through conduit 41 and shut-off valve 40 to conduit 36, which in this case functions as return conduit.
  • Conduit 36 In order to retract the telescopic piston/cylinder combination 20 the flow direction of the hydraulic fluid is on the other hand reversed by switching the valve 37.
  • Conduit 36 then functions as pressure conduit which carries hydraulic fluid to the underside of the hollow main piston 22 via shut-off valve 40, conduit 41, switch valve 37 and conduit 39.
  • the fluid to be discharged from piston/cylinder combination 20 is carried via conduit 38 and switch valve 37 to conduit 35, which thus functions here as return conduit.
  • gripper 11 is further provided with means for blocking the operating means.
  • these blocking means comprise a sensor 42 which protrudes through an opening in edge 18 and thus detects the presence of flange 9.
  • This sensor 42 is connected via a rocker 43 to a transmission element 44 which controls shut-off valve 40, Shut-off valve 40 is thus opened only when neck 8 of container 1 is accommodated in correct manner in recess 17, and flange 9 thus pushes sensor 42 aside.
  • sensor 42 moves back and shut-off valve 40 interrupts the flow of hydraulic fluid through telescopic piston/cylinder combination 20.
  • container gripper 11 The operation of container gripper 11 according to the invention is now as follows.
  • gripper 11 When gripper 11 is carried above container 1 by means of operating truck-mounted crane 12, it is moved such that recess 17 slides round neck 8 of container 1.
  • Flange 9 is herein received in the space bounded by edge 18.
  • the tubular operating member 7 here also slides into recess 29 of connecting element 28, and flange 10 into the space inside edge 30.
  • Piston/cylinder combination 20 is situated here in the almost fully extended position, so that connecting element 20 is situated a slightly greater distance from base 14 than is shown here.
  • shut-off valve 40 releases the flow through piston/cylinder combination 20.
  • the main and auxiliary pistons 22, 23 hereby move to the fully extended position, whereby flange 9 of container neck 8 is enclosed between connecting element 28 and base 14 of the gripper frame. This prevents the container 1 coming loose from gripper 11 during movement. This also prevents the operating means exerting any tension on chains 6, whereby bottom flaps 2A, 2B could already be partially opened during movement.
  • Piston/cylinder combination 20 is then fully extended again, whereby chains 6 are slackened and bottom flaps 2A, 2B fall back to their closed position under the influence of their weight.
  • Container 1 can then be re-placed again, after which gripper 11 can be uncoupled from flanges 9, 10 of neck 8, and the discharge mechanism of container 1.
  • piston/cylinder combination 20 has a telescopic form, with a hollow main piston and an auxiliary piston movable therein, at given dimensions of cylinder 21 it can make a greater stroke than a conventional, single piston/cylinder combination. Conversely, it is possible to suffice with a shorter piston/cylinder combination when the required stroke length is given, whereby the construction height of gripper 11 is reduced.
  • Truck-mounted crane 12 hereby has to hoist less high, so that a smaller, lighter, simpler and less expensive crane can suffice, while the useful load capacity of the refuse collection truck moreover increases.
  • a piston/cylinder combination with more than two stages could for instance be applied, or different telescopic piston/cylinder combinations could be placed in parallel or in series in order to achieve a greater hoisting capacity or a longer stroke. Variations could further be made in the embodiment of the piston/cylinder combination and the manner in which it is received in the gripper and operated.
  • the embodiment of the container receiving means and of the connecting element between the operating means and the discharge mechanism could also be varied.
  • the blocking means could be embodied differently or even be omitted entirely. On the other hand, it is possible to envisage applying the shown blocking means in combination with a conventional, single piston/cylinder combination.
