Abstract

A brush head and a toothbrush having a brush head with inclined and tapered bristles. In one aspect, the toothbrush includes a grip part, a head part, and a bristle area with tufts of bristles that are inserted therein. At least one of said tufts of bristles is inclined. The brush head is characterized in that the bristles in the at least one inclined tufts of bristles is tapered.

Description

The present invention relates to brush heads for toothbrushes in which a part of the tufts are tilted.

Toothbrushes with a mixed stocking perpendicular to the bristle carrier towering tufts on the one hand and inclined, cross-shaped x-shaped tufts are from the EP-A-0 885 573 known. The Applicant of the present application sells three toothbrushes of this type in Europe under the names Elmex Inter X, Elmex Inter X sensitive and Elmex Inter X junior. These toothbrushes are distinguished from a brush with exclusively vertical or exclusively x-shaped crossed tufts by a good cleaning performance both in the tooth surfaces and in the interdental spaces.

In order to achieve a clean as possible cleaning surface of the tufts, toothbrushes after their completion, whether with vertical tufts, with x-shaped tufts or with the above-mentioned mixed stocking, usually trimmed to a uniform height within a tuft. If desired, the trimmed bristle ends are then mechanically rounded to reduce the risk of injury to the gums.

Since more recent time, approximately from the EP-A-0 596 633 Also known toothbrushes with so-called "pointed" bristles, wherein the pointed bristles are arranged in vertical tufts. Sharpened bristles are more flexible than conventional bristles and therefore allow a gentler cleaning of the tooth surfaces with less risk of injury. However, pointed bristles can not be trimmed to the same height after completion of the brush since the sharpened portion of the bristles would be at least partially lost.

FR 683,311 discloses a toothbrush having rows of vertical tufts and rows of sloping tufts whose ends cross each other in pairs so that the ends form a single active area.

JP 2004-129683 A discloses a toothbrush with rows of vertical tufts and rows of inclined, mutually inclined tufts. The ends of all tufts are cut in a sawtooth shape, with the ends of the vertical tufts forming a serration on their own and the ends of the mutually inclined tufts forming a sawtooth in pairs. As starting material, pointed bristles are used; the ends of the bristles are largely cut off by sawtooth cutting.

The not pre-published EP 1 827 164 discloses brush heads for toothbrushes. In paragraphs 21-25 and Figures 1-5 Two possible shapes of the bristle profile (cylindrical or tapered) are disclosed, and in paragraph 34 and Figs. 5A and 5B, two possible forms of tuft orientation (vertical or inclined) are disclosed. In addition, a mixed vertical / inclined tufts are not disclosed.

Object of the present invention was a further improvement of the brush heads for toothbrushes.

This object is achieved by a brush head according to claim 1.

Bevorzugte Ausführungsformen ergeben sich aus den Unteransprüchen.Preferred embodiments will be apparent from the dependent claims.

It has surprisingly been found that the cleaning performance is increased to the tooth surfaces and at the same time a gentler cleaning of the tooth surfaces is possible when in a brush with mixed vertical / tilted trim according to EP-A-0 885 573 not the vertical tufts (which EP-A-0 596 633 would suggest), but the slanted tufts are provided with pointed bristles.

The term "inclined" in the context of the present application means that an inclined tuft is inclined at an acute angle to an imaginary line perpendicular to the bristle face, this imaginary line passing through the center of the hole in the bristle carrier associated with said tuft. This acute angle is 1 to 10 °, preferably about 7 to 9 ° and more preferably about 8 °. An inclined tuft can thus be inclined in the said acute angle about forward, backward or to one side.

All inclined tufts are tilted forward or backward. The term "tilted backwards" in the context of the present application means that a tucked-back tuft is inclined in the longitudinal direction of the bristle carrier at the acute angle to the handle part, and the term "tilted forward" means in the context of the present application, in that a forwardly inclined tuft, viewed in the longitudinal direction of the bristle carrier, is inclined away from the handle part at the acute angle.

The brush head of the invention has a surface which may be flat or curved, and which has imaginary holes for receiving the tufts. The bristle tufts protrude from this surface in the finished brush head. This surface is called a "bristle face".

All bristle tips in the slanted tufts are sharpened.

The brush heads according to the invention comprise, in addition to inclined tufts, a series of tufts protruding vertically from the bristle face, which are not inclined with respect to an imaginary line perpendicular to the bristle face passing through the center of the hole in the bristle carrier associated with the tuft. These tufts protruding perpendicularly from the bristle surface preferably contain only non-pointed bristles.

The tufts of the inventive brush head are arranged in transverse to its longitudinal transverse rows, in each transverse row either only forward slanted tufts with tapered bristles, or only backward inclined tufts with tapered bristles, or only perpendicular from the bristle surface protruding bristle tufts are present wherein at least one transverse row of forwardly or rearwardly inclined tufts with pointed bristles and at least one transverse row of tufts protruding perpendicularly from the bristle face with non-pointed bristles is provided.

The tufts of the brush head according to the invention preferably have a circular cross-section.

The term "pointed bristle" is common in the art and refers to a particular cylindrical bristle, the ends of which are reduced by chemical etching (eg with sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide solution) or by mechanical tapering in diameter such that the bristle is tapered towards its end, such as receives conical profile. If both ends of the bristle are treated in this way, one speaks of a "two-sided sharpened bristle", otherwise of a "one-sided sharpened bristle". Details of pointed bristle manufacturing techniques are described in various patent publications; it will be exemplary on the EP-A-1 234 525 , Korean Patent No. 130932 and the US-A-2004/0070258 pointed. Sharpened bristles suitable for the present invention are also available on the market, such as from the manufacturers Sogo, Hylon, Best Whasung, Cheil Jedang, Lion and Whessen.

In this case, the sharpened bristles particularly preferably have a profile (ie a diameter of the body of revolution as a function of the distance from the pointed end) which corresponds approximately to the numerical values from one of the following Tables 1 to 4. In these tables, the average diameters of the bristles are listed as a function of the distance from the pointed end. The "diameter range" given in these tables is a typical standard deviation of the diameter determined from several copies of the bristle; this standard deviation can also be considered as range limits of the diameter for these four particularly preferred profiles according to the invention. The pointed bristles may be made of any material commonly used for pointed toothbrush bristles. Preferably, the bristles are made of a polyester, in particular a poly (C 2 -C 8 ) alkylene terephthalate, wherein the (C 2 -C 8 ) alkylene is unbranched. Rather preferred as bristle materials are polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate and polypentylene terephthalate; Particularly preferred is polybutylene terephthalate.

The non-tapered portion of the sharpened bristles, when cylindrical, may have a diameter of about 0.15 to 0.25, preferably about 0.17 to 0.20 mm.

The non-tapered bristles may be made of any material commonly used for toothbrush bristles. The non-sharpened bristles are preferably made of a polyamide, in particular of a polyamide, which is produced from an unbranched (C 2 -C 8 ) -1, ω-diamine and an unbranched (C 4 -C 14 ) -1, ω-dicarboxylic acid , Rather preferred as the bristle materials for the non-tapered bristles Polydimethylenadipinamid, Polytrimethylenadipinamid, Polytetramethylenadipinamid, Polypentamethylenadipinamid, Polyhexamethylenadipinamid, Polydimethylendodecanamid, Polytrimethylendodecanamid, Polytetramethylendodecanamid, Polypentamethylendodecanamid and Polyhexamethylendodecanamid. Particularly preferred is polyhexamethylenedodecanamide.

The non-sharpened bristles are preferably cylindrical and then preferably have a diameter of from about 0.15 to about 0.20, preferably from about 0.17 to about 0.19 mm.

The inventive brush head can be used for a manual toothbrush or for an electric toothbrush. The bristles mounted on the brush head are set in motion either by hand movements, by motor drive or by sound waves.

The production of the brush heads according to the invention can be carried out analogously to the production of previously known brush heads.

To produce the tufts, one-sided or two-sided sharpened bristles may be used.

The holes of the bristle carrier, which serve to receive the tufts, may have previously been drilled at any angle α or β in the bristle carrier, preferably they can also be produced directly in the manufacture of the bristle carrier by injection molding using punch punches. The holes are preferably circular in cross section to allow the preferred circular tuft cross section.

If bilaterally pointed and non-sharpened bristles are mixed in any ratio used in a tuft, the tuft is preferably anchored by means of an anchor plate or a loop in a hole of the bristle carrier. In this case, all the bristles of the forming tufts are bent U-shaped within the hole, so that both ends of each bristle protrude from the hole. The holes are usually not consistent here. The proportion of the pointed ends of the tuft here is just equal to the proportion of double-pointed bristles used.

If unilaterally tapered and non-sharpened bristles are mixed, or only non-tapered bristles are used in a tuft, the tuft may be anchored in the hole as previously described or fabricated using the known AFT (anchor-free tufting) process. In this method, the bristles are inserted into a support plate having through holes, and the bristles of each tuft are welded together at the back hole opening with each other by means of a heating punch. The bristles then protrude from the front hole opening of the carrier plate. The tufts provided with the tufts can then be poured or welded into a brush head. Details of this procedure are approximately in the EP-A-0 405 204 described. To produce a mixed stock of vertical / inclined tufts, it is preferred to use a plurality of carrier plates which initially have vertical holes but which are welded together at appropriate angles after the AFT has been inserted into the bristles (see also US Pat WO-A-2004/056235 ). The composite carrier plate thus produced can in turn be cast or welded into a brush head. The proportion of the pointed ends in the tuft is in the production variant with anchoring equal to half of the proportion used unilaterally pointed bristles; when using the AFT method, it is just equal to this proportion used.

Tufts containing only non-pointed bristles are preferably trimmed according to the invention to a uniform height. Tufts containing pointed and non-pointed bristles, or only pointed bristles, are preferably not trimmed according to the invention. For the production of prototypes, the selective trimming of the tufts, which contain only non-sharpened bristles, can most easily be carried out with a small, pointed pair of scissors, for example a microscope scissors. On a mass scale, the steps of planting the tufts with non-tapered bristles, trimming and optionally rounding the bristles of these tufts, and finally planting the inclined tufts, wholly or partially made up of pointed bristles, may be placed in separate successive rows Operations are performed. The machinery and procedural details for each step are known to those skilled in the art.

In reference to FIGS. 1, 2 . 3 . 4 and 5 preferred embodiments of the invention are written.

For these preferred embodiments, gaps between tufts are understood to be measured at the height of the bristle surface of the bristle carrier between the central axes of the two tufts. Furthermore "Lengths of the brush head" are understood to mean distances between two transverse rows of tufts such that at the level of the bristle surface of the bristle carrier in the longitudinal direction, the distance between a first line connecting the center axes of the tufts of the first transverse row and a second line the central axes of the tufts of the second transverse row connects, is measured. This concerns eg in the FIG. 1 shown distance d x . In the figures, the central axes of the tufts are indicated by dashed lines. The distance "in the longitudinal direction of the brush head" between any transverse row of tufts and a double row of X-shaped crossed tufts is the average of a) the distance "in the longitudinal direction of the brush head" between the arbitrary transverse row and the transverse row forming a double row, and b) the distance "in the longitudinal direction of the brush head" between the arbitrary transverse row and the second transverse row forming the double row. This applies to the distances d a , d b , d c , d d , d e , d f , d g , d h , d i and d j , which in the Figures 2-5 are shown. The in the Figures 2 and 4 The distance d xx shown is the average of a) the distance between the forward slanted transverse row represented by its tuft 302 and the rearwardly slanted transverse row represented by its tuft 303, and b) the distance between rearwardly slanted transverse row represented by its tuft 301 and the forward slanted transverse row represented by its tuft 304.

FIGS. 1 . 4 and 5 illustrate the definition of some of the above metrics. As to the height h s , it should be noted that it may be of medium height, as the tufts with pointed bristles preferably are not trimmed and therefore the individual bristles contained therein may have different heights. This scattering of bristle height is in FIG. 1 Not shown. This figure also shows that brush heads according to the invention need not necessarily have the inclined tufts in the form of an X-shaped crossed arrangement; the slanted rows of tufts may also be present either slanted forward or backward.

Die Höhe hs der schräggestellten Büschel beträgt 13,0 bis 14,0 mm und bevorzugt etwa 13,5 mm.The brush heads comprise one or two double rows of x-shaped crossing tufts with pointed bristles. These double rows are each from a first transverse row of inclined backwards tufts with pointed bristles and a to this first transverse row in the direction of the handle portion at a distance d x adjacent second transverse row of forward slanted, compared to the tufts of the first transverse row offset in the transverse direction tufts pointed bristles formed ( Figures 2 and 3 ). The distance d x between the forward and backward slanted tufts is 0.7 to 1.3 mm, more preferably 0.9 to 1.1 mm, and most preferably about 1.0 mm. The height h s of the inclined tufts is 13.0 to 14.0 mm and preferably about 13.5 mm.

Even more preferably, the brush head additionally comprises transverse rows of tufts protruding perpendicularly from the bristle surface with non-tapered bristles, such that each double row of x-shaped crossed tufts each have a vertical transverse row in the longitudinal direction of the handle portion and a further vertical transverse row in the longitudinal direction Headboard is adjacent.

Alle Büschel sind von kreisförmigem Querschnitt; der Durchmesser aller Büschel beträgt etwa 1,7 mm.A first particularly preferred embodiment of the brush head of the invention ( FIGS. 1, 2 and 4 ) has a first double row of inclined, X-shaped crossed bristle tufts, the bristles of which are pointed and not trimmed. It is formed by a first transverse row of tufts of bristles tipped backwards (represented by its foremost tuft 301) and a second transverse row of two tufts inclined forwardly (represented by its foremost tuft 302). The distance d x , the two transverse rows forming said double row in the longitudinal direction of the brush head from each other, is about 1 mm. The height h s of the slanted Tufts are about 13.5 mm, and the angles α and β, respectively, in which the tufts inclined forwardly and rearwardly are inclined, are about + 8 ° and about -8 °, respectively (definitions of d x , h s , α and β according to FIG. 1 ). At a distance d xx in the direction of the head portion 12 of about 8.9 mm to the first double row just described, a second, identical double row of x-shaped crossed tufts is arranged. It is formed by a third transverse row of two backward slanted tufts (represented by their foremost tuft 303) and a fourth transverse row of three forward tipped tufts (represented by their foremost tuft 304). In the four transverse rows that form the two double rows, the distances between the tufts in the transverse direction are about 4.5 mm. At a distance d a in the longitudinal direction to the head portion 12 out of about 3.2 mm from the first double row, a first middle transverse row of four vertical tufts with non-pointed and uniform height h a trimmed bristles present. At a distance d a in the longitudinal direction of the handle portion 11 out of about 3.2 mm from the second double row is a second middle transverse row of four vertical tufts with non-pointed bristles and trimmed to uniform height h a bristles present. In these middle transverse rows, the widths of the tufts in the transverse direction are about 2.9 mm and the height h a is about 10.0 mm. At a distance d b of about 3.0 mm from the first double row in the longitudinal direction of the brush head to the handle portion 11 toward an inner transverse row of four perpendicularly rising from the brush body tufts with non-pointed, trimmed to a uniform height h b bristles arranged. At a distance d b in the longitudinal direction of the brush head to the head portion 12 of about 3.0 mm from the second double row an outer transverse row of four perpendicularly rising from the brush body tufts with non-pointed, trimmed to a uniform height h b bristles arranged. In this inner and outer transverse row, the widths of the tufts in the transverse direction are about 2.3 mm and the height h b of the tufts about 10 mm. In the longitudinal direction of the brush head at a distance d c to the handle part 11 from about 5.5 mm to the first double row is an innermost transverse row of three vertical tufts with non-pointed, trimmed to a uniform height h cd bristles arranged. In the longitudinal direction of the brush head to the head portion 12 at a distance d d of about 5.4 mm to the second double row an outermost transverse row of three vertical tufts with non-pointed, trimmed to a uniform height h cd bristles arranged. The height h cd of the tufts of the innermost and outermost transverse row is about 11 mm and their distance from each other in the transverse direction about 2.3 mm. This results in a stocking of a total of 32 tufts (10 inclined tufts with pointed bristles, 16 vertical tufts with non-pointed bristles, and 6 vertical tufts with non-tapered but slightly raised tufts relative to the previous 16 tufts near the handle portion 11 and head portion 12). , All bristles have a circular cross section over their entire length; the sharpened parts of the pointed bristles are thus rotational bodies. The diameter D n of all non-sharpened bristles and the maximum diameter D z of all pointed bristles is about 0.175 mm. All tufts are of circular cross-section; the diameter of all tufts is about 1.7 mm.

Alle Büschel sind von kreisförmigem Querschnitt; der Durchmesser aller Büschel beträgt etwa 1,7 mm.In reference to FIGS. 1 . 3 and 5 Another particularly preferred twelfth embodiment of the brush head of the invention will be described. This brush head has a first double row of slanted and pointed bristle tufts crossing over in an X-shape as described in the first embodiment (represented by the foremost tufts 301, 302). The rearwardly slanted transverse row (tuft 301) has two tufts spaced transversely of about 4.6 mm and the forward slanted row (tuft 302) has three tufts at a transverse spacing of about 4.6 mm each , The distance d x between the backward and the forward slanted transverse row in the longitudinal direction of the brush head is about 1 mm. The height h s of the inclined tufts is about 13.5 mm, and the angles α and β, respectively, in which the tufts inclined forwardly and rearwardly are inclined, are about + 8 ° and about -8 °, respectively (definitions of d x , h s , α and β according to FIG. 1 ). At a distance d e of about 3.2 mm in the longitudinal direction of the handle part 11 from the first double row, an inner transverse row of four tufts with non-pointed, h ef trimmed to a uniform height hef bristles arranged. At a distance d f of about 3.1 mm in the longitudinal direction to the head part 12 from the first double row, an outer transverse row of four tufts with non-pointed, h ef trimmed bristles is arranged. In the inner and outer transverse row, the distances between the tufts in the transverse direction are approximately 2.9 mm and the heights h ef approximately 10 mm. At a distance d g of about 5.7 mm in the longitudinal direction of the handle part 11 from the first double row, a further inner transverse row of four tufts with non-pointed bristles trimmed to a uniform height h gh is arranged. At a distance d h of about 5.6 mm in the longitudinal direction of the head part 12 from the first double row, a further outer transverse row of four tufts with non-pointed bristles trimmed to a uniform height h gh is arranged. I the other inner transverse row and the other outer transverse row are the distances of the tufts in the transverse direction about 2.9 mm and the height h gh about 11 mm. At a distance d i of about 8.2 mm in the longitudinal direction of the handle part 11 from the first double row, an innermost transverse row of three tufts with non-pointed bristles trimmed to a uniform height h ij is arranged. At a distance d j of about 8.0 mm in the longitudinal direction to the head part 12 from the first double row, an outermost transverse row of three tufts with non-pointed bristles trimmed to a uniform height h ij is arranged. In the innermost and outermost transverse row the distances between the tufts in the transverse direction amount to about 2.4 mm and the height h ij about 11.5 mm. This results in a stocking of a total of 27 tufts (5 inclined tufts with pointed bristles, 8 vertical tufts with non-pointed bristles, 8 vertical tufts with not pointed, but compared to the previous 8 tufts slightly raised tufts, and 6 vertical, still a little further increased tufts with non-pointed bristles adjacent to the handle portion 11 and the head portion 12). All bristles have a circular cross section over their entire length; the sharpened parts of the pointed bristles are thus rotational bodies. The diameter D n of all non-sharpened bristles and the maximum diameter D z of all pointed bristles is about 0.175 mm. All tufts are of circular cross-section; the diameter of all tufts is about 1.7 mm.

In the FIGS. 6 . 7 and Fig. 8 are the cleaning performances achieved with different brush heads in horizontal, vertical and circular cleaning movement, respectively. In these tests, the teeth of a maxillary sextant model (with 3 molars, 2 prebend teeth and 1 incisor) were first stained black and then whitewashed with a titanium dioxide paste (25g / v in 26% ethanol). After a standardized brushing process with the brush heads to be tested of 1 minute duration with 2.45 newtons of contact force, the percentage of tooth surfaces freed from the titanium dioxide paste was determined. For horizontal cleaning, the standardized brushing process consisted of 60 reciprocating motions with an amplitude of 30 mm; in vertical cleaning it consisted of 60 up and down movements with an amplitude of 8 mm; and in the circular cleaning it consisted of 60 circles of radius 4 mm with 16 horizontal reciprocating movements with amplitude of 30 mm at the same time.

For each brushhead type tested and each of the three cleaning tests, 4 pieces of the brushhead were tested on 4 maxillary sextants each. The average values of the total cleaning performance achieved for the horizontal, vertical and circular cleaning tests (as a percentage of the cleaned tooth surface, with scattering) are given in FIGS FIGS. 6 . 7 or 8 indicated. On the x-axis of the three figures, the numbers of the brush heads described above are given; with "comparison" is the corresponding cleaning performance of the brush head of a previously known, distributed by the applicant brush (Elmex Inter X medium) listed.
