Description

The invention relates to a sabot for a sub-caliber projectile according to the preamble of claim 1 .

In such a sabot, both the sabot body and the sabot jacket are divided into segments, with the contact surfaces between the segments of the sabot body on the one hand and between the arrow projectile and the segments the sabot body on the other hand lead to sealing problems.

EP-A-0 624 774 discloses a sabot according to the preamble, in which a special segmentation of the sabot body with longitudinal slots is provided to overcome the sealing problems mentioned above, which at least partially have a T-shaped cross section. In addition, a gas-tight seal in the form of a sealing cap with an end seal and predetermined breaking points arranged in the area of the inside diameter of the sabot body are provided. The outside diameter of the sabot body decreases from the back to the front, that is, a fictitious envelope surface on the sabot body essentially assumes an approximately conical shape. The circumferential grooves on the sabot body are not formed in the manner of regularly distributed grooves, but in the manner of alternately projecting and projecting individual shoulders or shoulders.

This sabot is of relatively complex construction and is therefore rather difficult to manufacture expensive. In addition, it can be at the joint between the sabot jacket and the sabot body gas leaks occur. Furthermore arise when dropping the sabot when shot due to the size of the sabot body relatively large metal splinters.

The invention has for its object to propose a sabot of the type mentioned, which does not have the disadvantages mentioned above.

The solution of this object is achieved by the features of the characterizing part of patent claim 1. Here, the sabot body is completely surrounded by the sabot jacket, the sabot jacket partially also encompassing the rear end of the arrow projectile. The sabot body has the shape of a hollow cylinder provided with circumferential grooves, the diameter of which is small compared to the diameter of the sabot jacket.

Advantageous special embodiments of the sabot can be seen from subclaims 2 to 14 .

The advantages achieved by the invention can be seen in the fact that the complete embedding of the sabot body in the sabot jacket, which is made of a plastic material, results in an optimal seal, since there are no metallic surfaces and micro gaps are avoided. The sabot body is simple to manufacture and small in comparison to those of the prior art, so that the complete sabot becomes lighter and smaller and lighter metal splinters are formed after firing, which reduces the danger zone in the mouth area. The breaking points of the sabot body are designed in such a way that the separation after the launch is as trouble-free as possible. The arrow floor has only a few driving grooves, so that there is an optimal air resistance and only a slight reduction in weight. The invention is explained in more detail below on the basis of two exemplary embodiments in connection with the drawing. Show it:

1 to 4 , 1 denotes an arrow projectile and 2 denotes a sabot arranged on the arrow projectile 1 . The sabot 2 consists of a sabot jacket 3 made of a high-temperature, fiber-reinforced thermoplastic and a sabot body 4 made of light metal. The sabot body 4 is completely surrounded by the sabot jacket 3 , the sabot jacket 3 engaging in circumferential grooves 5 of the sabot body 4 and comprising part of the front and rear ends of the arrow projectile 1 . The arrow projectile 1 is screwed to the sabot body 4 , the length of a thread 6 of the arrow projectile 1 being kept small in order to achieve better flight characteristics. The thread 6 protrudes from the sabot body 4 and merges into a smooth shaft 7 of smaller diameter, a shoulder 8 being formed which surrounds the sabot jacket 3 . The sabot jacket 3 has at the rear end a plurality of depressions 9 which serve as predetermined breaking points. In the front part of the sabot jacket 3 , six channels 10 are provided which are uniformly distributed around the circumference and taper conically towards the rear and which essentially have a prismatic cross section. The channels 10 are also connected to the surface of the sabot 3 by means of slits 11 , which also taper towards the rear, whereby six segments are formed. However, it is also possible to design the sabot jacket 3 with three, four or five channels 10 and slots 11 . With 12 a groove is designated, which is used to attach a hood, not shown. At the rear end of the arrow projectile 1 , a further thread 13 is provided, by means of which a stabilizing wing, also not shown, can be attached.

5 and 6 , the sabot body 4 consists of a multi-part hollow body formed with segments provided with circumferential grooves 5 , the outside diameter of which is small compared to the diameter of the sabot jacket 3 . The segments abut one another via so-called separation points 28 and have a toothing in their end region in the inner region which is provided for anchoring the hollow body forming the sabot body with the arrow projectile 1 . An attachment groove 35 is additionally provided in the rear area of the sabot jacket 3 .

7 and 9 , according to a further embodiment, the actual sabot body 4 consists of a hollow cylinder provided with circumferential grooves 5 , the outside diameter of which is small compared to the diameter of the sabot jacket 3 . At the rear end, the sabot body 4 has an internal thread 20 for screwing to the arrow projectile 1 . In the sabot body 4 , six slots 21 are provided which are evenly distributed around the circumference and form six segments and which extend from the front end face 22 to the rear end of the sabot body 4 , where they are delimited by predetermined breaking points 23 . Further variants are provided, which are not shown for the sake of clarity, where these predetermined breaking points 23 are formed on the front end face 22 and / or in the central zone of the slots 21 .

As shown in detail in FIG. 8 , for example the boundary surfaces 24 of the predetermined breaking points 23 lie on an arc 25 , the center of curvature 26 of which lies on the central axis 27 of the sabot body 4 . Instead of six slots 21 , the sabot body 4 can also be designed with three, four or five slots 21 , the same number of segments being formed in each case.

In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 8 and 10 , the sabot body 4 has four slots 30 offset by an angle of 90 °. In the area of the slots 30 , four circular arc-shaped recesses 31 are provided, which extend over the entire length of the sabot body 4 , the center of curvature 32 of the circular arcs lying on an axis of symmetry 33 of the slots 30 . In the recesses 31 and only in these grooves 34 are provided which correspond to the circumferential grooves 5 of the embodiment according to FIG. 7 . 8 shows a longitudinal section through the grooves 34 along the line VI-VI of FIG. 10 . With this design, a further considerable weight saving and thus a further reduction in the risk of metal splinters occurring after the shot is achieved.
