Definitions

  • the present invention refers to a lighting device for signs, in particular a device using reflected light that allows to obtain a better and easier to read sign look.
  • the invention also refers to a sign containing such a device and to a method for illuminating such a sign.
  • Signs represent a way of transmitting a certain type of information to the public such as, for example, the fact that near to the sign there is a certain commercial activity such as, for example, a shop, a supermarket, an office, or there is a certain service such as, for example, a bank, a hospital, said commercial activities or services being able to be associated with what is shown on the sign itself.
  • signs can also be used as advertising for certain products, services, or for similar information.
  • Signs are, for example, formed from a panel that acts as a support on which two or three-dimensional individual elements are applied such as, for example, letters, numbers, symbols, logos, characters, trademarks or distinctive signs, for the sake of simplicity indicated hereafter with the term "sign elements" which, combined one with the others, form the content of the information that the sign wishes to transmit to the public.
  • Such signs generally comprise a lighting device to allow the sign elements to be recognised also in dark conditions such as, for example, when there is no sunlight or in bad weather conditions, such as for example in fog or rain.
  • some kinds of signs generally comprise a lighting device using indirect or reflected light; by this term it's meant a system that allows the individual sign elements to be illuminated by placing a light source inside them or behind them. The light emitted by such a light source reaches the sign elements that are therefore illuminated by this indirect or reflected light.
  • Typical elements used in known in the art lighting devices using indirect light are neon tubes or LEDs.
  • each of such elements must have a certain dimension. Considering that the minimum bulk dimensions typical of neon tubes are a few centimetres (at least about 5-6), it is difficult to make neon back-lighted signs with elements having thicknesses smaller than said dimensions.
  • sign elements having a particular shape such as, for example, tight angles, small widths or certain particular curves, are not suitable for housing neon tubes that occupy the entire space inside such an element. Indeed, in said particular shape conditions, at least one area inside the sign element is not occupied by the neon tube and, consequently, said element cannot be back-lighted in said area.
  • a led is not a lighting body, but a luminous point that causes unattractive dot-shaped reflections visible on the back of the sign element to be illuminated.
  • the main drawback of this type of illumination is the low intensity and uniformity of the emitted light, making the sign not very visible and with an alternation of light and shadow areas.
  • the technical problem forming the basis of the present invention is therefore to provide a lighting device that allows to back-light sign elements of whatever shape and size so as to provide a good aesthetic quality when reading such elements.
  • a lighting device for at least one sign element comprising:
  • Said panel of the device of the invention can have any technically feasible shape, at least one portion thereof having a thickness such as to be able to house said light sources therein.
  • said panel can have a parallelepiped, cubic, or elliptical shape, shaped with arched lines, and similar.
  • said panel has a substantially parallelepiped shape, i.e. parallelepiped shaped or having a shape that is very similar to that one of a parallelepiped.
  • the thickness of the panel of the device of the invention is within the range from about 1 to about 15 centimetres, more preferably within the range from about 3 to about 5 centimetres.
  • Said panel has a width that can vary based upon the height of the sign elements to be illuminated, such a width being in any case greater than such a height.
  • said panel has a length that varies based upon the type of sign; in particular it varies based upon the number and width of the sign elements that form the sign itself.
  • the length of a panel must therefore be calculated, each time, for each type of sign so as to allow all of the sign elements to be applied to said panel.
  • the bottom surface of the panel of the device of the invention is made from aluminium bent along the perimeter.
  • the inner part of the bottom surface of the panel of the device of the invention is white coloured.
  • said at least one light source of the device of the invention is in contact with the bottom surface of the panel.
  • the light emitted by such a light source is able to diffuse inside the entire panel.
  • each light source consists of at least one fluorescent element, cold cathode neon elements, a series of LEDs, or combination thereof.
  • each light source consists of fluorescent elements of the rectilinear type having a light intensity within the range from 15 to 58 Watt /220 Volts.
  • said fluorescent elements have a high insulation level allowing them to be replaced in maximum safety conditions, without the need of specialised technicians.
  • Said at least one light source can emit white light or any type of coloured light to obtain a different aesthetic effect.
  • the position occupied by said at least one light source, in contact with the bottom surface of the panel, is selected based upon the dimensions of said sign elements to be illuminated, so as to obtain a better diffusion of the light, smaller defects in the shaded areas and therefore a as uniform as possible luminous halo.
  • said at least one light source can be arranged so as to occupy an area outside the perpendicular projection on the bottom surface of the panel of said sign elements.
  • said at least one light source can be placed inside said perpendicular projection on the bottom surface of the panel of said sign elements, or in a position partially inside and partially outside it.
  • the device of the invention comprises at least two light sources placed in contact with the bottom surface of the panel.
  • the number and dimensions of said at least one light source are variable and can be selected based upon the intensity of the light sources themselves and the dimensions of the sign elements to be illuminated.
  • the at least two light sources are placed in contact with the bottom surface of the panel in a symmetrical position with respect to the perpendicular projection on the bottom surface of the panel of said at least one sign element.
  • the dimensions of such a transparent element are smaller than the dimensions of the corresponding sign element to be illuminated.
  • the transparent element is smaller than the sign element and therefore less visible, therefore allowing the beam of light emitted by said transparent element to illuminate just the corresponding sign element to be illuminated, without diffusing into other areas outside thereof. In this way a good lighting quality of the sign element itself is obtained.
  • An advantage provided by such a transparent element is that of creating a certain distance between the rear part of the sign element to be illuminated and the bottom of the panel, in this way promoting the formation of a uniform perimetric halo for a better aesthetic quality.
  • the transparent element arranged outside the panel is made from methacrylate ester or from another plastic material to allow light to pass well.
  • such a transparent element arranged outside the panel is a transparent foil.
  • such a transparent foil is cut with a laser and glazed on two sides.
  • the shape of said transparent foil is as similar as possible to the shape of said sign element to be illuminated.
  • such a transparent foil has a constant thickness, for example, of at least 1 centimetre.
  • such a transparent element arranged outside the panel consists of at least one transparent tubular spacer.
  • tubular spacers are variable and are generally selected based upon the dimensions of the sign character to be illuminated.
  • the transparent element arranged outside the panel of the device of the present invention is in contact with the rear part of the corresponding sign element to be illuminated.
  • said the colour of the rear part of the sign element to be illuminated is white.
  • said light emitted by said at least one light source is diffused outside the panel through said front surface of the panel itself so that the amount of light that is diffused at said at least one transparent element is greater than the light that is diffused at the other portions of said front surface other than those that are at said at least one transparent element.
  • said light is diffused outside the panel just at said at least one transparent element.
  • said front surface is punctured in a sector at said at least one transparent element and at the relative at least one sign element to be illuminated so as to allow light to pass from the inside to the outside of the panel in this sector.
  • said front surface is made from a material such as to prevent said light from passing outside the panel in portions of the front surface other than the punctured one.
  • said front surface is made, for example, from non-translucent plastic materials, such as for example non-translucent methacrylate ester, or from metallic material, such as for example, aluminium painted in various colours, anodised aluminium, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and similar, or combinations thereof, and bent along the perimeter.
  • said front surface is made from aluminium.
  • the punctured front surface allows light to pass from the inside to the outside of the panel at said at least one sign element to be illuminated, avoiding the passage of light in other portions of the front surface itself.
  • said device also comprises a diffuser element, arranged inside the panel in contact with the punctured front surface.
  • said light diffuser element is of dimensions such as to cover the punctured area of the front surface so as to collect the light emitted by said at least one light source and transmit it to the transparent element arranged outside the panel.
  • said diffuser element is made from methacrylate ester or another plastic material.
  • said diffuser element is a sheet of methacrylate ester that is transparent, diamond transparent (also known as “diamond” type), or coloured.
  • said diffuser element is made from methacrylate ester of the diamond type.
  • said diffuser element can be made from coloured methacrylate ester. In this way, the advantage of diffusing the white light emitted by the light source in the form of coloured light to the outside of the panel is obtained, the colour being able to vary according to the type of coloured methacrylate ester used.
  • the transparent element arranged outside the panel and the diffuser element arranged inside the panel are both made from methacrylate ester and are glued to one another, through the punctured front surface.
  • said front surface is made from translucent plastic material so as to allow light to pass from the inside to the outside of the panel.
  • said front surface is made from methacrylate ester (or another plastic material) that is transparent, diamond transparent or coloured.
  • said device further comprises a masking device, said masking device being made so as to allow light to pass completely at said at least one transparent element and light to pass partially in the other portions of said front surface other than those that are at said at least one transparent element.
  • the light can pass to the outside of the panel at said at least one transparent element in a greater amount than the light that partially passes at the other portions of said front surface other than those that are at said at least one transparent element.
  • said masking device is suitable for completely preventing light from passing outside the panel at the portions of said front surface other than those that are at said at least one transparent element.
  • the light passes just at said at least one transparent element.
  • said masking device is placed in contact with said front surface, inside and/or outside the panel, obtaining a better barrier effect against the light.
  • said masking device is made from metallic material, such as for example aluminium, steel, brass, bronze, copper, or combinations thereof, or from another material having the same optical reflection properties as said metallic material so as to reproduce the aesthetic effects of said metallic material.
  • said masking device is obtained through known techniques, such as for example serigraphy, painting or application of films or foils.
  • said films or foils comprise two faces, a first adhesive face that allows the adhesion of the masking device to the front surface and a second face, opposite the first face, which can be glossy and/or glazed, coloured or not coloured.
  • the device of the present invention also comprises a translucent coloured film so as to be able to obtain a coloured reflected light, obtaining a particular aesthetic quality.
  • a translucent coloured film so as to be able to obtain a coloured reflected light, obtaining a particular aesthetic quality.
  • the coloured translucent film is positioned inside the panel between said at least one light source and said diffuser element.
  • the coloured translucent film is positioned between said diffuser element arranged inside the panel and said punctured front surface.
  • the coloured translucent film is positioned between said transparent element arranged outside the panel and the corresponding sign element to be illuminated.
  • the invention refers to a sign as defined in the attached claim 11.
  • a sign comprising at least one sign element suitable for being illuminated by means of a lighting device as previously described, is able to display excellent aesthetic lighting qualities.
  • such a sign comprises a series of sign elements, where by series we mean a number of elements ranging from (and including) two up to a variable number based upon requirements.
  • each sign element is shaped with a computerised cutter or with a laser; in this way it is possible to obtain sign elements of any shape and size desired, with production cycles that are easy to repeat and with clear economic advantages from the production point of view.
  • the thickness of such sign elements varies from a minimum of about 3 mm up to the desired maximum.
  • Each sign element can be made from metallic material such as, for example, steel, brass, copper, aluminium, or from plastic material, such as for example, methacrylate ester, forex, and similar, or combinations thereof.
  • each of said sign elements is applied to a corresponding transparent element (as previously described).
  • each of said transparent elements is smaller than the corresponding sign element applied to it.
  • the sign element is applied to the corresponding transparent element through welding, gluing or screwing.
  • the sign of the present invention consists of one of said panels.
  • the sign of the present invention consists of at least two of said panels, connected together so as to obtain the desired sign.
  • each of said transparent elements is applied to a corresponding diffuser element arranged inside a panel, through the punctured front surface of the panel itself.
  • At least two of said transparent elements are applied to a single diffuser element. In this way, it is possible to use a single diffuser element for many sign elements.
  • At least two of said transparent elements are applied to a single front surface of a panel, said front surface being made from translucent material, and in which said lighting device also comprises a masking device, said masking device being made so as to allow the light to totally pass through at said at least two transparent elements and to allow the light to partially pass through in the other portions of said front surface other than those that are at said at least two transparent elements.
  • the number of sign elements to be applied to a single diffuser element or to a single translucent front surface described above can be selected based upon the total number and the dimensions of the sign elements to be illuminated, reducing production costs.
  • the invention refers to a method for illuminating a sign, as defined in the attached claim 16.
  • a method for illuminating a sign comprising at least one sign element, said at least one sign element being applied outside a panel having a bottom surface and a front surface opposite to such a bottom surface, the method comprising, for each sign element to be illuminated, the steps of: a) activating at least one light source arranged inside the panel; b) diffusing said light emitted by said at least one light source outside the panel by means of said front surface, and c) transmitting said light diffused by means of at least one transparent element arranged outside the panel and in contact, on one side, with the front surface and, on the opposite side, with the corresponding sign element to be illuminated to such a sign element, is able to render a pleasant appearance to the sign to be easily read, whatever the thickness and shape of the elements of the signs.
  • said steps are carried out by means of lighting devices as previously described.
  • said light sources activating step is carried out through transmission of current to said light source.
  • said step of diffusion outside the panel is carried out by means of the puncturing of said front surface at said at least one transparent element, as previously described.
  • said step of diffusion to the outside of the panel is achieved due to the fact that said front surface is made from translucent material, a masking device suitable for allowing light to pass to the outside of the panel just at said at least one transparent element being applied in contact with said front surface.
  • said transmission step of said diffused light to said at least one sign element is carried out through transparent elements arranged outside the panel, as previously described.
  • a preferred embodiment of a sign 7 of the invention is shown displaying, as an example, the word "SAN", consisting of three sign elements (10a,10b,10c), being, respectively, the three letters “S", "A” and “N”, in stylised three-dimensional form.
  • the three sign elements (10a,10b,10c) have a thickness of about 20 mm and are applied to transparent foils (9a,9b,9c) made from methacrylate ester.
  • the foils (9a,9b,9c) are glazed on two sides and have a shape substantially similar to that of the respective elements (10a,10b,10c) and slightly smaller dimensions, so that each foil (9a,9b,9c) is wholly covered by the corresponding element (10a,10b,10c).
  • the lighting device 1 according to the first preferred embodiment of the invention is shown along the section A of figure 1.
  • Such a device 1 comprises a parallelepiped shaped panel 2 having a bottom surface 3, made from aluminium, the inner part of which being white painted, and a punctured front surface 4, made from aluminium and opposite to such a bottom surface 3.

  • the activation of the light sources (5,6) causes the emission of white light that is diffused outside the panel 2, through the translucent front surface 4', at the transparent foils (9a,9b,9c), and from these ones up to the point where it reaches the sign elements (10a,10b,10c).
  • said serigraphy 11 prevents said white light from diffusing outside the panel 2 into the portions of front surface 4' distinct from the portions 12 at the transparent foils (9a,9b,9c).
  • a constant, uniform luminous halo is thus formed, without shadow areas, having high intensity and a pleasant appearance that allows the sign elements (10a,10b,10c) to be illuminated.
