Bei kombinierten Taschenschwertfalzmaschinen, so genannten Kombifalzmaschinen, werden die Parallelbrüche in einer ersten Falzstation im Taschenfalzprinzip gefalzt, während die nachfolgenden Kreuzbrüche mit einem vertikal arbeitenden Falzschwert ausgeführt werden. Hierzu werden die gefalzten Bogen nach dem Parallelbruchausgang zu einer Kreuzbruchstation mittels Transportbändern schlupffrei transportiert. Um einen tatsächlich schlupffreien Transport zu gewährleisten, muss das transportierte flächige Gut niedergehalten und vertikal auf das Transportband gedrückt werden. Zur Erzeugung der hierzu erforderlichen vertikalen Anpresskraft werden sowohl Belastungskugeln als auch Führungsrollen eingesetzt. Derartige Belastungskugelsysteme sind beispielsweise aus dem deutschen Gebrauchsmuster
Zur exakten Falzung im Messerfalzwerk ist es notwendig, dass die dem Kreuzbruchanschlag am nächsten liegende Führungsrolle exakt positioniert ist, das heißt also, dass der Bogen "frei" zwischen dem Vorderkantenanschlag und der Führungsrolle liegt. Um dies zu gewährleisten, muss die Führungsrolle so positioniert werden, dass sich die Rolle gerade noch dreht und weder auf der Bogenhinterkante noch direkt auf dem Falzbogen steht.
