Description

Method for surface decoration of woodwork products
The subject of the invention is a method for surface decoration of woodwork products. With the help of this solution aesthetical, durable decorations, inserts, inlays can be set into the slots and hollows of the surface of woodwork products for example in parquets, respectively in miscellaneous wood panel materials, furthermore in furniture and furnishing objects made of wood.
Due to the development of woodworking technologies more and more new solutions were applied to decorate woodwork products. In the state of the art solution is made known for wood panels in US 4 486 371 patent description. Another solution is described in US 4 844 850 patent description for producing ornate panels. Here an ornate body is placed in the hollow created in the wooden panel.
A method is described in patent description US 3 8532 154 for creating ornate inlay characters, during which polyester material setting in a thermoplastic way is fitted into hollows made in a carrier of wood base. US 5 697 413 patent description describes an equipment suitable for fitting inlays in floorings primarily made of wood.
The US 5 198 168 patent decription describes a method to create inlays on carrier layers.
Here the carrier is heated approximately to 150° F and filled with the mixture of epoxy materials.
The disadvantages of the solutions in the state of the art is, that most of them are methods involving thermal treatment, furthermore the decorating material set in the surface or on the surface of the wood reacts with the wood resulting in colour distortion resp. obliterating of the outlines.
When working out the solution according to the invention we aimed to produce a solution to make possible setting of decorations resp. other materials into the slots in the wood surface in such a way, that their aesthetical value should not be distorted. When working out the solution according to the invention we realized, that if in the surface of the wood carrier a slot is made and the slot is provided with such a protective layer, a clutch surface, that prevents the material set into the slot to react with the materials in the wood and to change its texture, then the set aim can be achieved. The properly chosen clutch layer is suitable to compensate the change of the size of the wood due to change of temperature, moisture, resp. ageing, so the inlay set forms a dynamic unit with the wood and prevents the filling material of the inlay to peel off resp. fall out.
The invention is a method for surface decoration of woodwork products, during which a slot is created in the surface of the woodwork products by cutting, and surface-cleaning and slot-cleaning is performed on the product, then a transparent material is fitted into the slot formed this way to set there, and the surface formed this way is provided with a sealing layer after polishing, and is lacquered. The method according to the invention is characterized by that, a clutch material is set into the slot formed in the surface of the woodwork product by cutting after surface and slot cleaning, then the surface of the clutch material in the slot is preferably colored on places and ways required, then the slot is filled with a transparent material and then it is polished and after providing a top sealing layer, a final lacquer layer is applied.
In a preferred application of the method according to the invention the sealing material and the clutch material are simple uncolored nitro-lacquer material.
Li another preferred application of the method according to the invention choosing of the coloring and painting material takes place as per requirement.
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention the transparent material is a two-component- epoxy resin (kunstharz, resin, poly-epoxy).
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention the final sealing lacquer material is: conventional parquet-, or furniture lacquer. In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention the area of application of the method is in furniture industry, traditional wood panels, laminated panels, parquets, wall-covering materials, doors, windows, ceilings, suspended ceilings.
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention during its application it is possible to place pictures, small objects, decorating elements into the cut area, with sealing the area, a surface, that can be polished several times can be gained.
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention surfaces can be flat, respectively arched, or concave or convex areas.
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention the surface can be colored, respectively uncolored or decorated in itself.
In a further preferred application of the method according to the invention to protect the woodwork product and the inlay formed in it a final sealing layer or surface protection is applied, which is preferably parquet lacquer or surface protecting layer of plastic resin raw material.
When applying the method according to the invention in the most common way a pattern is cut into the material by a mechanical way, then the pattern is provided with an insulating clutch material, which partly excludes the organic acid in the wood (that is it closes the poles), and partly makes coloring easier. Then the additional part of the slot is filled with such a transparent plastic material, which behaves similarly with the physical properties of the wood. After the end of the chain of operation, the surface coating takes place in the traditional way, creating a coating e.g. by polishing, lacquering. It can be repeated several times. There is a requirement in connection with the transparent material, i.e. it should not defer much from the currently applied lacquers, i.e. both physical and chemical characteristics should comply with the requirements of up-to-date lacquers. By coloring the surface of the clutch material, the wood is technologically separated from the coloring process and those of subsequent procedures and steps.
During the method coloring is considered a special novelty, because this kind of process was not possible to make during previously applied methods, i.e. that shades of organic materials primarily shades of wood materials could be different from each other. Conventionally the end result of coloring could not be guaranteed, as the basic shades of the wood were dominant and they influenced the final result, hi case of the method according to the invention the clutch material allows to ensure the same color to appear even in case of wood of different basic shades.
The method according to the invention is furthermore set forth on basis of the attached figures:
Fig 1 shows the initial phase of the method according to the invention.

Fig 1 shows the initial phase of the method according to the invention. The wood raw material 1 can be seen in the figure where forming of slot 2 took place by cutting or by another method.
Fig 2 shows the application of the clutch material according to the method. The slot 2 created in the wood raw material 1 can be seen in the figure. Application of clutch material 3 on the surface of the slot 2 takes place by dispersion, smearing or any other methods. An important momentum of the application of the clutch material 3 is, that this layer must be incessant on the whole surface of the slot 2. The thickness of the clutch layer depends on the material applied, as well as the material of the inlay, this way ensuring the mechanical and aesthetical expectations.
Fig 3 shows how the paint layer is created during the method. The application of the paint layer 5 into the surface of the clutch material 3 takes place in the slot 2 coated with clutch material 3 in the wood raw material 1.
Fig 4 shows another possible embodiment of the method according to the invention. This case the location of the object 6 or decorating element takes place in the slot 2 formed in the wood raw material 1 into the surface of the clutch material 3 coating the slot 2.
Fig 5 shows the placement of the filling material applied during the method according to the invention, hi order to protect the paint layer 5 placed into slot 2 coated with clutch material 3 formed in the wood raw material 1 or that of the object 6 placed there, as well as for the levelling of the surface a filling material 4 is placed into the slot 2. Fig 6 shows the process of making the surface of the wood- raw material even. Fig 6 shows the subsequent technological step of the solution to be seen in Fig 5. After the setting of the filling material 4 placed into slot 2 the levelling of the surface of the filling material 4 takes place. With the help of polisher 9 the level of the filling material 4 is polished to the level of the wood raw material 1.
Fig 7 shows the final treatment of the surface, the coating by the final sealing layer. The slot 2 provided with filling material 4 as well as the surface of the woodwork product 1 are provided with a final coating, protecting layer 7.
Fig 8 shows a preferable way of forming the slot 2 during the method. The shape of slot 2 is preferably slightly dilating downwards to ensure, that the filling material 4 applied is set in the slot 2 in a form-closing way. This way the changes of layers of the wood resulting from the changes of the size of the wood can not result in the falling out or peeling off the inlay from the wood raw material 1 even in extreme cases.
Fig 9 shows the cutting head 8 preferably applied to form the slot according to Fig 8. The side profile of the cutting head 8 is broadening downward, narrowing upward by a preferable S=I -3 mm distance, so with the help of this device the slot 2 of trapezoid cross-section to be seen in Fig 8 can be made by a simple technological process, by cutting into the surface of the woodwork product.
Fig 10 shows a possible embodiment of the woodwork product from top view made during the method according to the invention. The pattern to be seen in the figure can be formed by the suitable guiding of the cutting head 8 during the technological process, which can be done by any of the woodworking technologies in the state of the art. The cutting process can be executed in the most effective way by CNC or other computer- guided equipment developed for this purpose.
Fig 11 shows making of the protecting and coating layer in a preferable definite embodiment of the method according to the invention. The clutch material 3 is applied into the inner wood surface of the slot 2 of the wood raw material 1 as a protective and coating layer by an air brush spraying system, where the material applied is preferably acrylic paint.
Fig 12 shows the intake of the filling material 4 in a preferable definite embodiment of the method according to the invention. The intake of the filling material 4 takes place with the filling head 11. In given case before this step the decorating paint layer 5 is created or the placement of the object 6 takes place.
Fig 13 shows making of the primer paint layer 12 and the final coating layer 7 in a preferable embodiment of the method according to the invention. After the removal of the excess filling material 4 the UV-drying primer paint layer 12 and the final coating layer 7 are applied.
In a preferable application of the solution according to the invention the material of the clutch material is a nitro-base paint and painting takes place with a special noozle. It is also possible to apply a special gradient color during the method according to the invention, which has not been possible so far in the state of the art. In given case it is possible to place a decorating element such as paper or other celluloze content object e.g. a leaf or other natural material, even a flammable material into the slot, as resulting from the epoxy polimerization applied during the method, no thermal effect is present, that would damage the paper or any other material.
Main steps of the technology based on the method according to the invention:
This technology is based on three steps of application to fill the decorations in the wood to a homogeneous and resistant surface and to get various paint and colour effects.
1st Step: Protection and sealing of the wood contact surfaces against the filling material
2nd Step: Filling the decoration with special water and solvent free material without any contraction during drying.
3rd Step: After removing of the overstanding filling material coating with UV-drying paint primer and top coat. In case of using coloured filling material at step 2 a big number of various paint and colour effects can be reached. Especially light/dark effects can be combined very decorative. Application step 1 is not necessary for all kinds of wood, according to the wood quality sometimes step 1 can be cancelled. The materials, which are necessary for step 1 and step 2 are for this application specially adapted high quality paint systems. In case of the UV-drying paints used in step 3 the decorated parquet- wood has the same resistance like all other standard parquetry on the market.
Application Step 1 :
With this application the open wood places after cutting the decoration will be sealed against incoming filling material. According to the quality of the available wood sometimes this sealing is not necessary. The seal is a special fast drying acrylic paint which is applicated by computer guided airbrush spraying system.
Technical details of Step 1.: Nozzle diameter 0,6 - 0,8 mm
Acrylic seal viscosity 20 - 30 sec F 4 mm/20 degrees centigrade
Air pressure 1- 6 bar according to airbrush system
Drying time 30 - 60 minutes after application the seal is stabile against filling material
Application Step 2:
With this step the sealed decoration of the wood will be filled with a two component solvent free paint system with 100 % active material and without any contraction during drying. The filling head is a special mixing nozzle, which blends the two components in the necessary relation together. The two components are transferred by micro pumps in the necessary quantity, hi the nozzle they are mixed together to a homogenous liquid in medium viscosity and poured out into the decoration till an overstanding film of max. 0.5 mm is reached. The movement of the blending/filling head and the micro pumps are guided by special computer programs. Technical details of Step 2.:
Viscosity component A 10,000 - 11 ,000 mpas
Viscosity component B 300 - 400 mpas
Drying time after filling: min. 8 hours, normal 12 hours
Reaction time after blending. max. 20 minutes
To apply different colours only the changing of component A is necessary, component B will not change.
Application Step 3 :
After the drying time of 8 - 12 hours of step 2 the overstanding filling material has to be removed and the parquet wood surface must be prepared for the final coating as usual. For this coating the standard parkett technology and UV-drying paints can be used. One UV-transparent primer coat and minimum 3 layers of UV -drying transparent and glossy top coat are recommended.
Final result:
With this decoration technology a lot of different wood decoration and filling colour effects can be produced. Especially light/dark effects are very decorative. The surface of the ready product possesses the same resistance like all other standard parquets.
The parquet wood stability and flexibility -flexibility will be even supported in case of the very high hardness of the filling material.
The advantage of the solution according to the invention is, that an aestethical surface can be formed, which can be widely applied. It makes possible an in-site, retrospective application, which is especially advantageous in case of floorings and other walking surfaces, because the surfaces can be renowned aesthetically. The surface created during the method according to the invention can be polished several times without damaging the inlay. An important benefit and novelty of the method according to the invention is the application of the clutch material, furthermore the fact, that the inside of the hollow formed in the wood is painted and not the filling material.
