Claims (17)

  1. System of road markers for marking a diversion or narrowing of the carriageway, consisting of a plurality of signalling devices (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) aligned at a spacing from one another along at least one carriageway equipped with a road safety barrier (2), characterised in that said devices (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) comprise:
    - a support (10) placed close to a road safety barrier (2), on a side thereof which is opposite at least one carriageway; and
    - an arm (13) mounted above said support and freely pivotable about a vertical axis (12) and a horizontal axis (14) perpendicular to the direction of its length, so as to be able to move from a horizontal position to a vertical or upwardly inclined position by pivoting about said horizontal axis (14);
    and in that the arms (13) of said signalling devices (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) are of increasing length in the direction of travel (C) along the said carriageway, so as to form a slanting closure when said arms (13) are arranged in the horizontal position to extend across said carriageway.
  2. System according to claim 1, wherein the height of the support (10) in relation to the ground and the shape of the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) are selected so that said arm (13) can be arranged in a horizontal position perpendicularly to said road safety barrier (2) and passing above the latter, so as to extend across said carriageway.
  3. System according to claim 2, wherein the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) carries, along its part (13") which is capable of extending across said carriageway, road signalling means (21, 22) extending downwardly to a level below the height of said road safety barrier (2).
  4. System according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) comprises, close to its distal end, a crutch (23) which, when the arm (13) is in the horizontal position, extends down to the ground to support its weight.
  5. System according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) also comprises:
    - first locking means (17), for preventing the pivoting of said arm (13) about said horizontal axis (14) in a vertical position;
    - second locking means (18, 19, 20) for preventing the pivoting of said arm (13) about said vertical axis (12) in a position parallel to said road safety barrier (2) and in a position perpendicular to said road safety barrier (2), wherein said arm (13) extends across said carriageway.
  6. System according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) comprises a counterweight (16) intended to assist its pivoting about said horizontal axis (14).
  7. System according to claim 6, wherein said counterweight is fixed to a lever arm (22) extending in an oblique direction relative to the arm (13) starting from a point on said arm (13) close to its proximal end.
  8. System according to claim 6, wherein said arm (13) is mounted so as to pivot about a horizontal pivot (14') fixed between the two arms of a U-shaped yoke (15), said yoke (15) in turn being mounted to pivot about a vertical pivot (12') fixed to said support (10) and wherein said counterweight (16) is positioned inside said U-shaped yoke (15) when said arm (13) is in a vertical or upwardly inclined position.
  9. System according to one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) is mounted on said support (10) by means of a ball and socket joint.
  10. System according to one of the preceding claims, comprising actuating means for inducing a pivoting movement of the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) about said vertical (12) and horizontal (14) axes.
  11. System according to claim 10, comprising control means for remotely controlling said actuating means.
  12. System according to one of the preceding claims, wherein each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) also comprises guide means (30) for guiding the pivoting movements of said arm (13) along a predetermined trajectory.
  13. System according to one of claims 2 to 12 wherein at least the part (13") of the arm (13) of each signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) which is capable of extending across said carriageway is made of plastics, so as to break into fragments in the event of impact with a vehicle without endangering the latter.
  14. System according to one of the preceding claims, comprising between 3 and 7, preferably 5, signalling devices (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E).
  15. System according to one of the preceding claims, wherein the supports (10) of said devices are placed between two road safety barriers (2, 2') defining the central reservation of a dual carriageway.
  16. Method of deploying or retracting a signalling device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) of a system of beacons according to one of claims 1 to 15, comprising operations of pivoting the arm of said device about said horizontal (12) and vertical (14) axes in order to bring it from a horizontal resting position, parallel to said safety barrier (2) and on a side thereof which is opposite at least one carriageway, to a horizontal operating position perpendicular to said road safety barrier (2) and extending across said carriageway, or vice versa, by passing above said safety barrier (2).
  17. Method of deploying or retracting a system of markers according to one of claims 1 to 15, comprising the deployment or retraction of each device (1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E) according to the method in claim 16, starting with the device located furthest upstream (1A) in the direction of travel (C) along said carriageway towards the device situated the furthest downstream (1E) for the deployment and starting from the device situated the furthest downstream (1E) in the direction of travel (C) along said carriageway towards the device situated the furthest upstream (1A) for the retraction.
