Definitions
- the invention relates to a single-direction door construction provided with a door frame having a vertically positioned hinge arrangement which allows the door to be opened in a first direction of rotation and which also allows the door to be opened as an emergency passage in the second direction of rotation.
- Such door constructions are known, especially for use in public buildings such as pubs, sports centers, etc.
- a usual solution here is to suspend the door from double-action, three-part hinges, and the door is in fact without a rebate.
- a fracture element in one of the hinges is designed to fail when the door is used as an emergency exit. When put into use again, the door is to be provided with a new fracture element in the form of a blocking pin.
- the emergency lock is provided with an externally mounted, clearly visible mechanism.
- the invention is characterized in that a combination of the frame and a vertically oriented stop bar fastened to the side of the door frame opposed to the hinge arrangement serves as an obstruction against opening in the second direction of rotation below a first pushing force exerted on the door, whereas above said first pushing force the stop bar can be forced from its fastening in a reversible manner such that the obstruction is lifted.
- a construction may also be used for dimensions or placements different from those of a standard door, i.e. for example for a window. This application is accordingly also covered by the word "door”.
- the hinge arrangement comprises a vertically oriented beam profile, which beam profile swings open together with the door in the first direction of rotation but in the second direction of rotation remains substantially seated on the door frame while only the door swings open, and which beam profile is connected to the door as well as to the door frame by means of a plurality of hinge elements. Pivoting may be realized here in that only single-action hinges are used, which avoids the dangling effect mentioned above. The use of several hinges in different locations makes the connection stronger. This latter aspect is the more relevant for a narrow door, especially if it is provided with one or several windows.
- the stop bar is fastened to the door frame by means of a snap connection.
- Snap connections are a fully developed technology, so that standard elements can be used that can be applied to the door frame in a simple manner.
- Such a snap connection element is often adjustable, so that the pushing force mentioned above can be set to a desired level. Furthermore, it is usually not necessary to provide recesses in the door frame, which is advantageous in the case of daunting door frames.
- the door construction is additionally provided, at an upper side, with a door closer and with a hinging cover lath, on which cover lath a first fastening point of the door closer is mounted, and which cover lath swings along with the door when the latter is opened in the first direction of rotation but remains behind when the door is pivoted in the second direction of rotation for use as an emergency passage.
- Door closers are generally known, and this arrangement makes it possible to use a door closer also in combination with the invention.
- the door closer in particular offers no counter-force during the movement in the second direction of rotation.
- the invention also relates to a method of making or converting a door construction in accordance with claim 1 as recited in claim 10. Often a few simple operations will suffice for achieving a satisfactory result.
- the invention also relates to a fastening set for implementing such a method. A simple set is capable of achieving a remarkable result in many cases. Further advantageous aspects of the invention are recited in the dependent claims.
- Fig. 1 shows a door construction according to the invention in an elevation viewed from the first direction referred to above.
- the Figure shows various standard parts of the door 21 such as a door handle with lock 20, a right-hand door jamb 22, a lintel 24, and a left-hand door jamb 26.
- a spring-loaded door closer 28 is also present.
- the door is normally opened by operating the door handle and moving the door in forward direction relative to the plane of drawing, whereupon it will move in clockwise direction when viewed from above.
- the operation of the lock is conventional; a wide variety of suspension and closure mechanisms is possible, always provided that they allow the use as an emergency passage.
- a broken line 30 indicates a rebate framework for a single-direction door.
- the door construction may alternatively be mirror-imaged.
- Various materials and designs are furthermore possible for the door, such as a rounded or triangular upper side, an asymmetrical shape, and the like.
- the rebate framework 30 is partly absent. It has been maintained in a different manner at the right-hand side, see Fig. 2, and has been modified in a particular manner at the upper side, see Fig. 6A. Furthermore, a so-termed stop bar at the side of the door opposed to the side of the hinge here forms a barrier that can be pushed away.
- Fig. 2 offers a cross-sectional view of the door construction according to the invention viewed from above.
- the connection between the door and the door jamb on the left is formed by a separate vertical beam 34 which is hinged both to the left-hand door jamb 22 and to the lateral side of the door 21.
- the element 36 is a cover lath which renders the slit between the vertical beam 34 and the door 21 invisible during normal use. As a result, it is not discernible from this side, denoted the inner side, that there is a door with an emergency exit function here, which will thus not readily lead to improper use.
- the sound insulation function which is realized, for example, by an arrangement to be discussed further below (Figs. 5, 7), is also enhanced thereby.
- the width of the cover lath 36 may be greater than is shown in Fig. 2 in that it extends up to the hinge fastened to the door jamb 26.
- a vertical stop bar 32 is provided on the door frame at the other side of the door.
- This bar has here an L-shaped cross-section for keeping a possible slit between stop bar and door frame and possible cavities in these parts out of sight.
- the cross-section is now more or less that of a door frame with a rebate.
- a planar stop bar or one having a more complex cross-section may also be used.
- the insulation properties as regards draft and sound will also be those of a normal door frame with rebate or may be realized in a standard manner.
- the fastening of the stop bar 32 on the door frame 22 can be reversibly unmade by means of a sufficient horizontal pushing force exerted on the door in the second direction of rotation.
- the door can then also turn in anticlockwise direction.
- the required pushing force should be correctly dimensioned such that a single person is capable of applying it with a reasonable effort.
- this pushing force should be greater than that which is normally required for opening a door of the relevant size and type: so this force should generally be greater for a heavy door of solid wood than for a lightweight panel door of living-room size.
- Fig. 2 shows a sill 29, i.e. a projecting profile mounted to the lower outer side of the door. This serves to keep out splashing water.
- the sill extends no further than to the vertical beam 34.
- the vertical beam 34 is shortened at its lower side with respect to the height of the door 21 over a distance corresponding with the height of the sill 29.
- the cover lath 36 is in this case cut at the height of the sill 29.
- Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional lateral view of the door construction of Fig. 2. This shows the door closer 28, a housing 40 for the door closer mechanism, the door 21, an additional beam 62 above the door, a cover lath 60, and the lintel 24.
- the beam 62 and the cover lath 60 move along with the door in the first direction because the cover lath projects over the door and both the lath 60 and the beam 62 are hinged to the left-hand door jamb 26. In the second direction, however, they are blocked by a step in the lintel 24.
- a staple connection 61 which couples the beam 62 to the door 21 in particular at the side of the lock, is loosed thereby.
- This construction is described in detail with reference to Figs. 6, 6A. If no door closer is present, the construction may obviously be simpler. A stop bar may then also be used at the upper side of the door under certain circumstances.
- Figs. 4A-4C show several cross-sections of a door construction according to Fig. 2 in different positions of the door construction.
- Fig. 4A shows the door in the closed state, wherein all elements of Fig. 2 are again discernible.
- the beam 34 is connected to the left-hand door jamb by means of a hinge 50 that has its pivot at the lower side (as seen in the Figure).
- the beam 34 is connected to the door 21 by means of a hinge 52 that has its pivot at the upper side.
- the two hinges are at least of a double construction so that the door can be securely suspended; usually, however, they need not be provided at the same level and may also be provided in different numbers.
- the hinge 50 for example, may be of double construction in a sturdy decorative design whereas the hinge 52 is a triple one of simple construction.
- Fig. 4B shows the door in the open state during normal use.
- the hinge 50 opens whereas the hinge 52 remains closed.
- the contact point 53 of the door closer moves along with the door while the contact point 55 at the lintel remains in place.
- Fig. 4C shows the door in the open state when used as an emergency passage.
- the hinge 52 now opens while the hinge 50 remains closed
- the contact point 53 of the door remains stationary, as does the contact point 55. It is also apparent here that the stop bar 32 has been cast off. A flexible joint between the stop bar 32 and the right-hand door jamb 22 is also shown.
- the lock of the door may be constructed such that a bolt thereof can be selectively inserted into a slot or cavity element of the door frame.
- the emergency door function cannot operate without any preparation in that case. If this is to be activated nevertheless, it may be provided that at least a blocking portion of the slot or cavity element can move along with the door when the latter is moved in the second direction. The emergency function can then be activated, for example, also after closing time. This has an optimum result in a combination in which the door cannot be pulled open from the outside owing to a suitable choice of lock. It is known that generally a greater force can be exerted through pushing against a door than through pulling at a door.
- Fig. 5 gives an enlarged picture of the vertical beam 34 with the left-hand door jamb 26, cover lath 36, and hinges 50 and 52.
- the cover lath 36 may be fastened to the beam 34 or to the door 21 itself. It may even be left out completely in principle. If present, it masks the hinged joint between beam and door.
- Slits 37 may accommodate strips for draft or sound insulation.
- a suitable transverse dimension of the beam 34 is 4 x 4 cm. In case of for example a daunting front door hinges may be used advantageously which are not externally visible, being so called into bore hinges.
- Fig. 6 shows the vertical cover lath 36 and the horizontal lath 60 connected thereto and extending along the beam 62 in Fig. 3. It will be clear that these parts together with the stop bar and the associated snap connection can form the basic ingredients for a fastening set that can be used for existing doors. In other cases a further cover lath may be included in a standard set. Cutting to size and fastening are often all that is required.
- Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of the vertical cover lath 36, wherein the vertical beam 34 and the hinges 50, 52 are again visible.
- the cover lath is differently dimensioned as compared with Fig. 5.
- Reference numeral 37 denotes two inserted rubber strips for insulation against draft and sound. Such strips may also be used at the other side, and the same holds for their use between the door 21 and the right-hand door jamb 22.
- an anti-draft strip - not shown in the drawing - is mounted at the lower site of the door which, upon opening of the door in either of the two possible directions shortens or withdraws in the direction of the door.
- Fig. 6A is a cross-sectional view of the vertical cover lath 60 and the beam 62 behind it, the actual door being left out.
- the beam 62 forms part of an L-shaped construction within which the door fits, a suitable transverse dimension being 4 x 8 cm.
- the laths 36 and 60 are interconnected in the Figure by means of an angle iron screwed thereto. Another method is that the ends of these laths are milled out so as to obtain a tenon and mortise joint.
- the lath 60 is capable of pivoting with respect to the door frame.
- the contact point 53 of the door closer (Fig. 4B) is connected thereto so that it will swing open along with the door in normal use. This is due to the fact that the cover lath 60 projects beyond the upper edge of the door.
- the beam 62 stops the cover lath 60, so that only the door will rotate.
- Reference numeral 71 denotes grooves in the left-hand door jamb 26 for draft or sound insulation strips.
- the door and the beam 62 are interconnected by means of a staple or similar element 61 (Fig. 3). The force required for breaking through the fastening of the door can be further increased thereby. The staple sits at the side of the lock; it can be easily replaced.
- Fig. 8 depicts the connections between the stop bar and the door frame. Visible is first of all the right-hand door jamb 22, viewed from the upper or outer side in Fig. 2. Two elements 66, 68 are let into the vertical door jamb, one above the other, and contain a compressible ball at their mutually facing sides. The pressure is exerted by built-in spring elements. An interposed element 70 is provided on the stop bar, which element can be introduced between the elements 66 and 68 by force or by means of a tool that is known per se. Such closures are in general use, for example in kitchen interiors. The pushing force required for pressing away the stop bar can be set through a suitable dimensioning of the elements 66, 68, 70 and the spring force. The L-shape of the stop bar may be obtained through gluing, screwing, and the like.
- the stop bar is fastened to the door frame by means of a flexible element 72. After the fastening 66, 68, 70 has been pressed away, the stop bar will be left more or less suspended. This serves to prevent damage to the stop bar and also to prevent persons from tripping over it when passing through the emergency exit.
- a door closer of the pushing or pulling type in combination with the emergency passage function.
- An alternative is a breakable blocking hinge in the door closer legs.
- the inventor has opted for a pivoting lath 60 (Fig. 6) that presses against the door at the upper side and to which the door closer is fastened. This lath pivots along when the door is opened in the normal manner (in the first direction) towards the inside and also presses the door shut again. The lath remains behind, however, when the door swings outward in the emergency condition.
- Said lath may be rigidly connected to the profile beam, so that the latter becomes an L-profile as it were.
- Two profiles are then necessary, however, one for right-turning doors and one for left-turning doors.
- the single vertical profile beam is of itself practically suitable for left and right applications. It suffices to provide small recesses next to the normal recesses for the hinges so as to make it suitable for use with left and right applications. It is noted in this connection that in this example the beam 34 has a square profile and a covering strip over its entire length.
- FIGS 9 and 10 depict another embodiment of connections between the stop bar and the door frame.
- the connection between the stop bar 32 and the door frame 22 is in this example realized by means of a fracture connection 42,44.
- This connection preferably comprises plastic bolts 42 with which the stop bar 32 is screwed at different heights into the door frame 22 at a side running perpendicular to the door 21.
- corresponding metal "turn-in" nuts 44 are screwed into the door frame 22 in which the plastic bolts 42 can be screwed.
- Upon fracture of the bolts 42 a head part thereof is automatically released from the stop bar 32. After removal of a remaining part of the bolts from the nuts, the stop bar 32 can be re-connected to the door frame 22 using new bolts.
- the stop bar 32 in this example has no L-shaped cross-section and as a flexible coupling between the stop bar 32 and door frame 22, thin metal strips 41 are used which are rotatingly connected to both the stop bar 32 and the door frame 22.
- the left-hand part of figure 10 shows in a side view the condition before an emergency situation.
- the right-hand part of figure 10 shows how in an emergency situation the stop bar 32 moves up and away from the door frame 22 by means of the hinging sheets 41 which enable free movement of the door.
