  2. Security paper according to the preceding claim, characterised in that the said reinforcing element is selected from synthetic fibres, in particular polyester or polyamide fibres, natural textile fibres, in particular abaca, hemp, flax or Chinook fibres, and mixtures thereof.
  3. Security paper according to preceding claim 2, characterised in that the said polyester fibres are polyethylene terephthalate fibres, in particular present in a quantity of between 10 and 20 parts by dry weight per 100 parts of the other fibres of the said second ply.
  4. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said authentication element of the said first ply, and, where applicable, that of the said second ply, can be detected optically.
  5. Security paper according to preceding claim 4, characterised in that the said authentication element is selected from watermarks, iridescent particles, luminescent, in particular fluorescent or phosphorescent fibres or particles, or coloured or thermochromic fibres or particles, the said particles being, in particular, flakes.
  6. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said authentication element of one of the plies reacts to certain stimuli, giving a specific signal that can be detected using a suitable apparatus.
  7. Security paper according to preceding claim 6, characterised in that the said element is selected from substances that react to electromagnetic fields, in particular of the microwave type.
  8. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said first external ply comprises a watermark as an authentication element and has a thickness substantially greater than that of the said second ply or of the other plies, preferably approximately 1.5 to 2 times greater.
  9. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said reinforcing element also has an authentication function.
  10. Security paper according to preceding claim 9, characterised in that the said reinforcing element forms the authentication element of the said second ply.
  11. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said second ply comprises the said reinforcing element and that the said paper has a tear index greater than or equal to 10 mN*m2/g.
  12. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the plies are based on cotton fibres.
  13. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that it comprises three fibrous plies, the said first external ply comprising an authentication element, the said second ply being central and comprising the said reinforcing element, and the third ply being another external ply comprising an authentication element that may be different from that of the said first ply.
  14. Security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that it is a banknote paper.
  15. Process for the manufacture of a security paper according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the said plies are assembled wet.
  16. Process for the manufacture of a security paper according to the preceding claim, characterised in that the said first external ply comprises a watermark and is formed on a cylinder machine comprising a watermark wire.
