Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for producing a printed product, comprising providing a printing machine equipped with a printing unit, which after a CMYK process, a large number of colors of the printed product by color mixing of standardized primary colors cyan, magenta, yellow and black can be generated, generate a present in electronic form template and print the printed product by printing a substrate.
- a large number of mixed colors can be produced by additive color mixing by means of direct mixing and / or matrix mixing of the primary colors.
- printing presses are provided with printing units that have a separate printing plate or printing plate for each of the applied to a substrate base color.
- spot colors are certain rubbings of colors.
- spot colors are preferably used when areas of the same color are printed in a recognition color of a company. The circumstance becomes more and more important, above all Large corporations identify their appearance on the market not only by sign-like representations such as names (word marks) and logos (signets), but also by a specific corporate color or color combination (so-called "corporate color").
- CMYK process incurred high costs, because in general, the printing press must have a further printing unit for each spot color and it must be created in each case a further printing form. For example, using a special color added to the CMYK process can increase printing costs by 25 percent.
- DE 197 36 605 A1 shows a method of printing a set of articles, wherein the articles are in particular floor coverings.
- each member of a set of printed objects should be printed with a uniform pattern in different colors.
- the printing takes place in three or four color printing.
- color separations of a three- or four-color set are created on the basis of a printing original, the primary colors cyan, magenta and yellow preferably being used.
- a change in the color assignment is made, wherein one or more of the color separations a different base or spot color is assigned.
- a print with the new color assignment takes place, wherein in the printing process, if necessary, only the exchanged primary colors must be replaced by special colors. This makes a simple and high-quality reproduction of the artwork in a different color possible.
- the printed product preferably contains the printing representation of a photographic image, since color mixing according to a CMYK process or according to a modified CMYK process according to the invention is indispensable, in particular for the representation of photographic images.
- the printed product contains at least seventeen different colors, and more preferably at least fifty different colors each be generated by additive mixture of the remaining primary colors and the special color.
- the printing method may preferably be a sheet-fed offset method, a web offset / heatset method, a newspaper offset printing method or a gravure printing method.
- any other known printing method can be used.
- the method and printed product according to the invention are particularly advantageous whenever the printing method used includes screening in conjunction with a large number of colors to be displayed.
- the screening can be of any type, in particular amplitude-modulated screening, or frequency-modulated screening.
- a printing form can first be produced from the electronic artwork.
- the printing form to be produced means not only solid printing plates which are initially produced objectively and then provided on the printing machine, but also intermediate carriers, as provided in modern computer-to-print methods or non-impact printing methods ,
- the print template present in electronic form is generated from a layout document in electronic form by means of a program-controlled computer.
- a layout document containing color information according to one or more conventional standards is converted into a master copy containing color information in an adapted manner to obtain even with a modified set of inks according to the invention a useful printed product.
- the use of a preprogrammed filter in conjunction with the program-controlled computer allows a conversion of the layout documenting or a color adaptation, as by manual made color corrections would be possible only in a much larger time frame and with not reliably reproducible quality.
- the filter is independent of the layout document, so that the filter is particularly universally applicable.
- the filter is advantageously dependent on the printing method used, so that, depending on the printing method, a particularly good optimization of the printing original is made possible.
- At least the parts of the layout document which represent light images are present in an RGB mode in the color space ECI-RGB.
- the color space ECI-RGB has been defined and defined by the European Color Initiative (ECI).
- ECI European Color Initiative
- the term "light image” should be understood to mean those parts which comprise particularly finely graded and resolved structures, such as photographic images or drawings with many colors. In contrast, delimit parts of the layout document that represent areas of the same color.
- the ECI-RGB format is particularly preferably converted into a CMYK format, wherein at the same time color matching or color correction takes place through the filter.
- CMYK format can then be transmitted in a simple manner as information to a printing press, which was equipped according to the invention with a different color from standardized CMYK colors, so that despite the different inks a the Layout document in sufficient quality corresponding print result in the field of light images is achieved.
- areas of the layout document which represent areas of the same color are present in a CMYK format. It may also be provided that such areas are first converted, for example by means of conventional programs for electronic document processing, into a CMYK format. Such areas can then be advantageously corrected by means of an electronic color correction filter in your color. These now color-corrected areas of the same color can then be transmitted in a simple manner as information to a printing press, which was equipped with a different color from standardized CMYK colors, so that despite the different inks of the press a corresponding to the layout document in sufficient quality print result in the range the surfaces of the same color is achieved. As an alternative to using an electronic color correction filter, color correction of the areas of the same color can also be performed manually.
- a color correction preceding selection of areas of the same color within the layout document preferably be done by computer control.
- a selection can also be performed by an operator, since the number of areas of the same color in layout documents is often manageable for an operator.
- a layout document has a first area which comprises a representation of a light image and a second area which comprises the representation of one or more areas of the same color, wherein in the production of the artwork from the layout document the first area experiences a processing which is dependent on a processing of the second area is different.
- spot colors are equally suitable for replacing a standard color of the CMYK process.
- the standard color Y yellow
- the standard color Y can be replaced by a color which corresponds to the standard color Pantone 116 C or the standard color HKS 4.
- the replaced color may also correspond to the color 2.5 Y 8/16 as defined in the color standard "Munsell Book of Colors".
- the removed primary color yellow (Y) is advantageous, the special color used for this being characterized by a spectrophotometric measurement on coated paper at solid density 1.85, viewing angle 2 degrees, and illuminant D50, the measured index numbers of the replaced color being determined according to CIELAB color definition in LCH.
- the removed color is the primary color yellow
- Also according to the invention is the use of a printing machine known per se, the printing machine being equipped for printing by means of a conventional CMYK printing process, but the printing machine being used in connection with the method according to the invention.
- a printing press known per se, the possible uses of the printing machine are increased and in many cases considerable costs can be saved.
- the primary color yellow has been replaced by the special color S. This is done in a simple manner by replacing a paint reservoir on the printing press.
- a layout document 2 was initially created, which is an electronic template of a resulting printed product in the form of a file.
- a layout document 2 can be present in any conventional file format, wherein individual elements of the layout document can be present in different color formats, among other things. Common color formats are for example RGB, CMYK, Lab or more.
- PDF Portable Document Format, originally defined by the company Adobe Systems Incorporated
- the layout document comprises a first element 2a and a second element 2b.
- the first element 2a comprises a surface of uniform color serving as a deposit of a text.
- This color was provided by the advertising agency as a special color. This can be, in particular, the recognition color of a company (Corporate Color). The requirements for the printing of this color is therefore particularly high and must not take place as a mixture according to a CMYK process to achieve optimum reproduction accuracy and color brilliance, but must be done as an immediate print of a separate color of the color.
- the special color in the layout document is marked as Pantone 116 C color. This color differs from the primary color yellow primarily in that it has higher proportions in the red spectral range.
- the color Pantone 116 C can be approximated in the CMYK representation in that the base color yellow has a share of 100% and the base color magenta has a content of 20%.
- the second element 2b comprises the representation of a light image, wherein the light image includes a large number of colors and color gradations in the smallest space.
- the first element 2a is not present in the color format CMYK
- the first element is converted into the color format CMYK in an intermediate step not shown in FIG.
- a conventional conversion routine for example by means of the add-on module "PitStop” Enfocus nv, Kleindokkaai 3-5, Ghent, Belgium, to the Adobe Acrobat program can be used.
- the aforementioned conversion routine is a batch processing routine. In the present example, this conversion is necessary since, in particular, the color Pantone 116 C not explicitly contained in the CMYK color space was contained in element 2a.
- the second element 2b is not present in the RGB mode and in the color space ECI-RGB, the second element is converted in an intermediate step, not shown in FIG. 1, so that it is present in RGB mode in the color space ECI-RGB.
- a conventional conversion routine can be used for example in the popular program Adobe Photoshop. The conversion is that the second element 2b in the format EPS stored using the color profile ECI-RGB.
- the EPS format and the ECI-RGB color profile are standardized or at least common and widely used formats and profiles.
- the first element 2a and the second element 2b after being separately converted to the desired formats CMYK and ECI-RGB as described, are also subsequently processed separately. This is due to the fact that the optimization of photographic images has different requirements than the optimization of surfaces of the same color. In the case of areas of the same color, it must be ensured in particular that the areas to which the spot color S is assigned (as in the present case the background area of the element 2a) are printed exclusively in this spot color.
- an electronic color correction filter 3 is applied to the CMYK-format element 2a.
- a color correction filter 3 can consist in its effect that all flat colors in the same proportions of the remaining primary colors C, M and K are added or removed.
- the color correction filter can be designed as a batch processing conversion.
- the pressure with the CMSK compression ultimately leads to a good reproduction of the areas of the same color provided in the original layout document.
- the correction filter 3 is at Design and application of the correction filter 3 to note that those colors in the layout document corresponding to the spot color S (here: Pantone 116 C), after application of the correction filter 3 in the CMYK representation have only portions of the component Yellow (Y).
- Y the component Yellow
- the second element 2b which is present as a representation of a light image in EPS file format with ECI-RGB color profile, subjected to a second processing step.
- the EPS file of the second element of the application of a filter 4 is subjected.
- This filter 4 consists essentially in a specially made color profile S_Profil.
- the profile S_Profile is available as an electronic file and is a CMYK color profile in its own way.
- the profile S_Profile is an ICC color profile, which in the present exemplary embodiment is in the standardized file format ".ICM".
- the application of the filter to the second element 2b takes place in that the color profile S_Profile is assigned to the second element 2b stored as an EPS file as a new color profile instead of the original color profile ECI-RGB.
- Such assignment can be made, for example, with the Quite A Box Of Tricks commercial program of Quite Software Ltd., 105 Ridley Road, London E7 OLX, United Kingdom, which is an extension to the Adobe Acrobat program of Adobe Systems Incorporated, San Jose, USA.
- the assignment takes place in an instruction step in which the second element 2b is converted from the ECI-RGB color format into a CMYK color format. For the conversion, however, the special color profile S_Profile is used instead of a standard CMYK color profile.
- the direct use of the CMYK data by the printing machine means that the separate printing forms or printing plates can be produced directly from the CMYK data.
- the special color profile S_Profile available as an electronic file must be created once for a given replacement of a base color by a special color.
- the creation can be done manually or at least partially by supporting programmable computers.
- the filters 3, 4 in the present case, it is therefore advantageously ensured that according to the layout document gray areas are printed as a gradation of the color black (K) and not as a mixture of bright colors.
- the deviations can be compensated, at least for a large number of meaningful color translations, in such a way that a printed product of high quality and good color fidelity can be achieved.
- the elements 2 a, 2 b post-processed by the filters 3, 4 are subsequently joined together to form a common file which represents a print original 5 for the printing press 1.
- This print template 5 is now completely in the color format CMYK.
- the file type is preferably a PDF file in a particularly high quality ("high-end PDF").
- the printing original 5 is used to create printing forms for the individual color printing units of the printing machine 1.
- the create printing forms are provided on the equipped with the color combination CMSK printing machine 1 and the pressure is initiated.
- the printed product produced by the printing press now has the property that on the one hand, the base color yellow (Y) is not included in it and that, on the other hand, those surfaces of the same color to which the spot color S is assigned exclusively with its own color of the special color S be printed.
- a final check of the print original by means of a color proof takes place before a proof.
- This is a high quality, calibrated color printer, which also generally prints according to the CMYK process. Often, this final check is made because the assessment of a test print on paper is more reliable than the review of a display on a screen.
- the color proofing printer can not be equipped with the special ink, it is advantageously provided that the particular color profile S_Profile is again used between the print original 5 and the color proofing printer. In particular, this is done in a simple manner in that the profile S_Profil is loaded on the color proofing printer. In this way, a color-correct reproduction of the printing original 5 can be achieved on a CMYK-equipped color printer.
