Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a device for determining the quality of the ambient air in a room.
  • German patent 19700964 describes a multisensor which is used to control a heat treatment installation.
  • the atmosphere in rooms is important to the well being of humans and animals. This is true in particular in rooms in which a relatively large number of people are present. The presence of this relatively large number of people may cause the conditions in a room of this type to change rapidly.
  • One example is a classroom. It has been found that when the windows are closed conditions may deteriorate rapidly during the lesson, and consequently the ability of the pupils to absorb fresh information drops especially quickly. It has been found that the learning performance and attentiveness can be improved if the atmosphere in rooms of this type is improved.
  • the devices which have been used hitherto are particularly complicated and expensive, and consequently they are not in general use. Moreover, it has been found that devices of this type do not operate optimally under all conditions. If various parameters are being measured, it is preferable if, in the event of a defined threshold value for each variable being exceeded, a signal is emitted indicating that this threshold value has been exceeded. However, it has been found that even though defined threshold values are not exceeded, the climate in a certain room may nevertheless not satisfy the demands imposed upon it.
  • US-A-5,394,934 describes a device designed as a type of thermostat. It is to be attached to the wall of a room. The use of a device of this type is limited to the specific room.
  • the object of the present invention is to avoid the drawbacks described above and to provide a device which is simple to use and allows accurate determination of the climatic conditions inside a room, such as a classroom or other rooms in which a relatively large number of people are present.
  • this object is realized with a device for determining the quality of the ambient air in a room, comprising at least one sensor for measuring at least two variables, such as temperature, atmospheric humidity, number of particles, percentage of carbon dioxide, and a processing and comparison element for processing the signal emanating from the sensor, comparing the values of the variables in this signal with threshold values for these variables stored in a table and outputting an indication using a display and/or sound signal when said threshold value is passed, the level of the threshold value for a variable being dependent on the measured value for another variable, the parts of this device being accommodated in a stand-alone casing comprising a base, and the device comprising an energy store.
  • the threshold value for a variable, at which a signal is emitted when the threshold value is exceeded is not a constant value, but rather varies as a function of the value of other measured variables, i.e. if all the conditions are optimal apart from one condition, such as for example the atmospheric humidity, the threshold at which a signal is emitted will be relatively high. However, if an undesirable temperature level is approached at the same time, without the threshold value selected for this level being exceeded, the threshold value for the first variable, such as the atmospheric humidity, will be selected at a lower level and a signal will be emitted at an earlier stage.
  • the device By designing the device to be a stand-alone unit, accommodated in a case or housing which can be placed onto a table or the like, it is possible to quickly determine the climate in any room. Since the device has its own energy supply such as a battery, and has the option of emitting a sound signal, it is not necessary to take special measures in order to rapidly determine the air quality in any desired room. Moreover, the device according to the invention can be quickly changed between different rooms. For example, in schools it is possible to monitor a large number of classrooms using just one device.
  • the device is a structure without the need for any external cabling, i.e. the device is provided with its own energy supply and/or its own energy store.
  • An energy supply may, inter alia, comprise a solar cell, while an energy store may comprise a battery.
  • the indication which is given in order to characterize the conditions inside a room is carried out using a display, on which, for example, it is possible to present the temperature, atmospheric humidity and the like. Moreover, it is possible to use a sound and/or light signal to indicate whether certain threshold values are exceeded.
  • Fig. 1 diagrammatically depicts an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
  • Fig. 2 shows the block diagram of the device according to the invention.
  • the device according to the invention is denoted overall by 1. It is provided with a base 3 and a part 4 which projects from the base and in which there is a display 2.
  • a device of this type is a "stand-alone" unit and can easily be placed onto a desk or the like.
  • Fig. 2 diagrammatically depicts the structure of the device. 2 denotes the display, which is controlled by control/storage element 5. Sensors for determining four parameters, which sensors are denoted by 6, 7, 8 and 9, are connected to the control/storage element 5. These sensors can be used to detect the number of particles in the air, the percentage of carbon dioxide, the temperature and the humidity. Of course, it is also possible to measure other parameters, such as the conductivity and the like.
  • 12 denotes an antenna which symbolizes a transmission device.
  • 10 is a solar cell, while 11 is a battery.
  • 15 is a loudspeaker for emitting a sound signal, while 14 is an LED or other light-emitting element.
  • a table containing threshold values for each of the variables measured by sensors 6-9 is stored in element 5. If the values measured by the sensors 6, 8 and 9, for example, are well below the undesirable situation, the threshold value for the variable measured by sensor 7 is relatively high. However, if the values for the variables measured using the sensors 6, 8 and 9 approach their associated threshold values, without actually exceeding them, according to the invention the threshold value for the variable measured using sensor 7 is adjusted downward. If two of the sensors 6, 8 and 9 approach a threshold value, the threshold value of sensor 7 can be adjusted even further downward. Moreover, it is also possible, in such a situation, to adjust the threshold values for the sensors 6, 8 and/or 9 downward, i.e. lower threshold values are adopted for the combination measurement of the different variables if a number of threshold values are approached.
  • a warning signal can be given on display 2. Temperature, atmospheric humidity and the like can be presented on display 2.
  • the above-described device can be positioned without any physical connection to its surroundings, i.e. a single device can be used to alternately measure the climatic conditions in various rooms.
