Abstract

A composite armor plating, especially for installation in motor vehicles, is provided, and comprises individual plates having an outer layer, of a protective material of great hardness, and an inner layer of a fiber material of lesser hardness. Respective steel edge reinforcements of predetermined thickness that each extend along at least one outer edge of each of the plates are provided. Each edge reinforcement covers at least a side edge of the outer layer, and is fixedly connected with such plate.

Description

The invention relates to a composite armor, in particular for installation in motor vehicles, consisting of individual plates with an outer layer of a protective material of high hardness and an inner layer of a fiber material of lower hardness. Such plates are known per se, wherein the outer layer forming protective material of high hardness, for example, may be a ceramic material, while the inner layer forming fiber material of lower hardness, for example a glass fiber composite may be.

A problematic area of such composite armor plates is the area of the outer edges, in which optionally the individual plates are attached to each other. This area is a weak point of armor, especially for projectiles that hit this area at an angle. It exists then the risk that the plate breaks off in the edge region and pass the projectile or parts of the projectile at the outer edge of the plate or between two plates into the interior of the vehicle. This is particularly critical if the outer edges of the plate or the plates are in alignment with the edge between the vehicle door and body.

As the closest prior art, the in US 3683828 to see described armor.

The invention has the object of providing a composite armor with the features specified in the preamble of claim 1 in such a way that each single plate ensures adequate protection even against obliquely impinging projectiles in the region of its outer edge or outer edges.

The solution of this object is achieved according to the invention with the features of the characterizing part of claim 1. Advantageous developments of the composite armor according to the invention are described in the dependent claims.

The basic idea of the invention is to provide each panel of the composite armor along at least one of its outer edges with an additional edge reinforcement covering the outer layer at the side edge, which consists of a steel with good strength properties and the area of the outer edge of the panel before breaking or chipping protects. To be particularly advantageous, it has been found that this edge reinforcement has an angle profile strip, the first leg is guided perpendicular to the plate surface at the side edge of the outer layer, while the second leg is parallel to the plate surface and is integrated into the plate. Furthermore, it is advantageous if the first leg guided along the outer layer of the angle profile strip, the outer surface of the Outer layer surmounted by a predetermined length. The connection between the edge reinforcement and the layers of the plate can be effected by means of an adhesive.

In the following an embodiment of a composite armor according to the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.

The drawing shows a part of a plate of a composite armor in the region of an outer edge. The plate has an outer layer 1, for example of a ceramic material, which is connected by an adhesive layer 4.1 with an inner layer 2, for example of a glass fiber composite. In the region of the outer edge of the plate, an edge reinforcement is arranged, which has an angle profile strip 3 made of a steel with good strength properties. This angle profile strip 3 is arranged on the outer edge so that its first leg 3.1 is perpendicular to the plate surface, covering the side edge of the outer layer 1 and projects beyond the surface of the outer layer by a predetermined length. The second leg 3.2 of the angle profile strip 3 is parallel to the plate surface and is integrated into the plate and indeed in the inner layer 2 such that one of the outer layer once facing side is flush with the interface between outer layer 1 and inner layer 2. The second leg 3.2 underlines the outer layer 1 on a predetermined length. The connection between the second leg 3.2 of the angle profile strip 3 and the inner layer 2 via an adhesive 4 and its connection to the outer layer 1 via an adhesive 4.2.

In the drawing, it is indicated that projectiles 5.1, which impinge in the region of the outer edge, as well as projectiles 5.2, which obliquely to the plate surface in the direction of the outer edge, the plate in the region of the outer edge can not bring to breaking or splintering, because it is protected by the edge reinforcement, ie the angle profile strip 3.
