Abstract

A rotary blood pump comprises a pump housing (12) having an inlet (13) and an outlet (16). A rotor (17) is mounted within the housing and has an impeller (19). A rotor motor (53, 54, 56) is provided which includes a plurality of permanent magnets (54) within the impeller (19) and a motor stator (56) that includes an electrically conductive coil (57) is located within the housing (12). Magnetic interaction between the permanent magnets (54) within the impeller (19) and the stator 56) operates to transmit torque for driving the blood pump, the impeller (19) being axially restrained by hydrodynamic forces. <IMAGE>
