Definitions
- the invention relates to a sealing device for electrical connectors according to the preamble of claim 1.
- a sealing device is known in application in an electrical connector from DE 44 34 030 AI.
- the connector has a housing to which a large number of individual cables, bundled as a cable harness, are fed. Each of the cables is connected at one end to a connection section of a contact element.
- the contact elements are mounted in a contact carrier of the connector for contacting mating contact elements.
- water access to the contact elements via the cables must be prevented.
- the contact elements connected to the cables are guided through a sealing plate made of elastic material after being passed through a pressure plate.
- the pressure plate and the sealing plate have a number of recesses corresponding to the number of contact elements.
- the cables are positively enclosed and sealed by pressing the sealing plate through the pressure plate.
- This type of sealing is disadvantageous because of the need to provide a sealing plate with recesses, which is cost-intensive and expensive in terms of production technology because of the precise fitting of recesses in an elastic and therefore difficult to process material. To make matters worse, the recesses can be damaged and inoperable when performing sharp-edged contact elements. Furthermore, the number of recesses must exactly match the number of contact elements.
- the sealing device according to the invention for electrical connectors with the characterizing features of claim 1 has the advantage that the aforementioned shortcomings are avoided to a satisfactory extent.
- the sealing device has a retaining element which makes it possible to use an installation space of the sealing device in a connector housing of the connector for the use of a flowable, curable sealing compound.
- FIG. 1 An embodiment of a sealing device for electrical connectors is shown in the drawing and explained in more detail in the figure description.
- the figure shows the connector with the sealing device in a sectional view.
- An electrical connector 11 is part of an electrical connector.
- the connector 11 is designed as a portable cable harness connector and can be coupled in a detachable manner to a fixed mating connector 12, which is only shown in part, as the other part of the connector.
- the connector 11 has a frame-shaped connector housing 13 made of plastic.
- a contact carrier 14 made of plastic is inserted, circumferentially sealed in a manner not shown.
- the contact carrier 14 contains a number of receiving chambers 16 corresponding to the number of poles of the connector 11, one of which is shown in the figure.
- the receiving chambers 16 penetrate the contact carrier 14 axially, corresponding to a plug-in direction of the connector 11 along an arrow 17, and end at the front end on a plug-in side 18 of the plug-in connector 11, on which the coupling with the mating connector 12 takes place.
- the receiving chambers 16 open on an assembly side 19 of the contact carrier 14 into a trough-shaped installation space 21 of the plug housing 13.
- the installation space 21 is designed at least in the region of the assembly side 19 with a retaining element 22, so that the receiving chambers 16 at their ends on this side are covered.
- a light-flowing, self-leveling, curable and then partially elastic sealing compound 23 is filled into the installation space 21.
- the sealing compound 23 and the retaining element 22 as a prerequisite for a functionally reliable use of the sealing compound 23 in the connector 11 together form a sealing device 24 for the connector 11.
- the sealing compound 23 can be axially non-positively loaded by a pressure plate 26, which is subsequently introduced into the installation space 21 and then completely covers the sealing compound 23.
- the plastic pressure plate 26 has a number of axially directed bushings 27 corresponding to the number of poles of the connector 11, one of which is shown in the figure.
- the connector 11 is completed by the assembly of contact elements 28, each having a contact section 29 at one free end for contacting a mating contact element 30 of the mating connector 12 and a connection section 31 at the other end.
- a cable 32 is connected in an electrically conductive manner to the connecting section 31, which is only partially drawn in the figure and is part of a cable harness leading out from the plug connector 11.
- the insertion of the contact elements 28 into the plug housing 13 takes place with a contact section 29 in front during a plug-in process through the assigned bushing 27, the sealing compound 23 and the retaining element 22 into the receiving chamber 16 until an end face 33 of the contact element 28 stops on an inner shoulder 34 of the Receiving chamber 16.
- the contact elements 28 are secured in this functional position against being pulled back out of the receiving chambers 16 against the direction of the arrow 17 after they have been fully inserted into the receiving chambers 16.
- the sealing device 24 has, as a central functional element, the pourable, self-leveling sealing compound 23, which must be prevented from flowing through the receiving chambers 16 of the contact carrier 14 when it is poured into the installation space 21. This flow is prevented by the retaining element 22, which can be designed in a wide variety of ways and the different configurations listed here are only mentioned as examples.
- the retaining element 22 can consist of a thin layer of dust, which preferably has a platelet-shaped structure, so that a thin-layer, easily penetrable closure of the bushings 27 is possible.
- Talc or mica are preferably used as substances for the dust layer, because they can form a layer even with the thinnest application due to their platelet-shaped structure. These substances are advantageously provided in a high degree of fineness, so that when the contact elements are pushed through, the entrained portions of the dust layer do not hinder the electrical contact.
- the retaining element 22 can consist of a film. This film can be formed in a spray order on the component side 19 of the contact carrier 14 or consist of an inserted, separate part.
- a common version of the separate part consists of a thin foam insert that is open-pored.
- the foam insert can have a cover surface 36 which is closed-pore on one side and faces away from the sealing compound 23. This reliably prevents the sealant 23 from flowing through the foam insert.
- the film can be made of an elastomer such as silicone rubber. The advantage here is that due to a chemical structure comparable to that of the sealant, good adhesion is created between these substances.
- the film made of a thermoplastic such as polyethylene, polypropylene,
- Polyethylene terephthalate from composites thereof or from layered films provided with hot melt adhesive.
- the advantage here is that very thin foils can be produced, which have sufficient strength with regard to handling and at the same time have the desired low puncture resistance when carrying out the contact elements 28.
- the film can consist of a high-temperature-resistant plastic such as polytetrafluoroethylene or copolymers thereof. It is advantageous that high reaction temperatures can be used for the rapid hardening of the light-weight sealant 23.
- the retaining element 22 can be a fibrous material such as felt or paper as a separate part.
- the advantage here is that, despite the compact nature of the fibrous material, capillary forces soak quickly with the easy-flowing sealing compound 23, thus creating an easily penetrable retaining element 22.
- the separate part can also be formed by a bulk material.
- silicone rubber threads come into question here in the form of a disordered layer (tangled) or as cut goods.
- the disordered position has the advantage that the manufacturing costs for the retaining element 22 are particularly low.
- spherical or geometrically differently shaped particles made of silicone gel or silicone aerosols are also listed, which are introduced onto the component side 19 of the contact carrier 14 by inflation or spray application. It is advantageous that the chemical structure comparable to that of the sealing compound 23 creates a bond between the substances which inhibits the discharge of particles when the contact elements 28 are pushed through.
- soft, open-pore nonwovens or bulk fibers for the retaining element 22. These can be introduced by inflation or by separate manufacture and placement on the component side 19 of the contact carrier 14. The advantage here is that they can be easily soaked during pouring and can be easily penetrated when the contact elements 28 are pushed through without being carried out by the user.
- sealing compound 23 detaches the retaining element 22 before curing, because a mechanically stable sealing device 24 is thereby formed after the sealing compound 23 has hardened.
- the retaining element 22 may be formed by the sealing compound 23 itself.
- the sealing compound 23 is solidified in marginal zones via thermal influences, for example by a shock-like heat application, when it is applied to the component side 19 of the contact carrier 14.
- the retaining element 22 in several parts and to place these parts at least partially on the contact carrier 14 and on the sealing compound 23. Regardless of the design of the retaining element 22, this allows volumetrically exact partial filling of the installation space 21. In conjunction with the partially elastic sealing compound 23, reproducible and functionally reliable sealing conditions on the plug connectors 11 can be produced in a uniform manner with an equally high contact pressure of the pressure plate 26.
