Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a closure for containers and, in particular, to a closure for containers such as bottles containing beverages for athletes.
  • Closures for containers of the abovementioned type are widely referred to as "push-pull" closures and are formed by a pouring body, applied to the upper end of the neck of a bottle, and by a sleeve-shaped stopper slidingly fitted on the said pouring body in a manner such as to be able to assume alternatively an open position and a closed position of the said pouring body.
  • closures of the "push-pull" type are particularly suitable for being fitted to bottles used by athletes in that they permit easy opening and closing thereof simply by gripping the bottle with one hand and acting directly on the said stopper with the mouth.
  • such a stopper also functions as a conveyor of the beverage contained in the bottle directly into the mouth of a person.
  • the said covering element is connected separably and completely to the pouring body and, in some cases, can also function as a tamper-proof seal.
  • the reference numeral 1 generally designates a "push-pull" closure comprising a pouring body 2 provided with a stopper 3 and a cap 4 integrally connected to the said pouring body 2 by means of a hinge 5.
  • the pouring body 2 possesses a first portion 6, represented only partially in Figure 1, forming the portion for dispensing a beverage contained in a container and a second portion 7 forming the portion for anchoring/retaining the pouring body 2 on the said container.
  • the first portion 6 and second portion 7 have a substantially cylindrical shape and are placed one upon the other in a manner such as to have a single common longitudinal axis X-X, and the first portion 6 possesses a diameter that is less than the diameter of the second portion 7.
  • first portion 6 and the second portion 7 are produced in a single piece and are connected by means of a connector ring 8 whose radius is substantially perpendicular to the axis X-X.
  • the first portion 6 is entirely conventional and will therefore not be further described.
  • the first portion 6 extends from the inner rim 82 of the connector ring 8, in other words from the edge nearer to the axis X-X, while the second portion 7 extends from the outer rim 83 of the said ring, in other words from the rim further from the axis X-X, in the opposite direction to the first portion 6.
  • the connector ring 8 possesses an exterior surface 80 that is substantially flat and directed towards the first portion 6 of the pouring body 2 and an interior surface 81 that is directed towards the second portion 7 of the said pouring body 2.
  • annular lip 9 possessing an undercut on its outer wall which is matched by a projection 10 designed to create a sealing point by interference against the inner wall of the neck of a bottle to prevent the escape of the beverage contained therein once the "push-pull" closure has been applied to the said neck.
  • the said interior surface 81 possesses an annular rim 11 positioned between the annular lip 9 and the outer rim 83 of the said connector ring 8.
  • the annular rim 11 has the function of coming into abutment against the upper rim (not shown) of the neck of a bottle in a manner such as to create a further sealing point against the accidental escape of beverage contained in the said bottle.
  • the exterior surface 80 of the ring 8 by contrast possesses a semi-annular protuberance 15 positioned on the side opposite to the hinge 5.
  • the said protuberance has the function of engaging by interference with the cap 4, thus retaining it on the pouring body 2 when the "push-pull" closure 1 is closed, as will be more clearly described below.
  • the said arcuate elements 17 substantially follow the said outer rim 83 and are positioned substantially diametrally opposite the hinge 5.
  • the teeth 16, represented in Figure 3 are advantageously of polyhedral shape, possessing a first face 161 substantially parallel to and facing the axis X - X, a second face 162 substantially perpendicular to the axis X-X and directed towards the securing ring 13 and a third face 163 substantially opposite to the said first face 161.
  • the said third face 163 is inclined relative to the axis X-X of the pouring body 2 in a manner such as to join with the first face 161, forming a section 164 of reduced thickness opposite to that of the said second face 162.
  • the second portion 7 of the pouring body 2 possesses an interior surface provided with a threading 12 having a pitch capable of engaging with a corresponding threading made on the neck of a bottle (not shown) for reversibly fixing the "push-pull" closure to the said bottle in an entirely conventional manner.
  • a small securing ring 13, of the type widely known in the industry, is then connected to the second portion 7 by means of small breakable webs 14 in a manner such as to form a tamper-proof seal against unwanted removals of the "push-pull" closure 1 from the neck of a bottle.
  • a beading 19 extends substantially along the entire longitudinal length of the said second portion and in alignment with the hinge 5, in a manner such as to be substantially perpendicular to the plane defined by the said hinge 5.
  • the said beading 19 is such as to engage with a corresponding grooving made on the cap 4, as will be explained in detail below.
  • the hinge 5 is configured as a thin sheet equipped with a line of weakness 20 which subdivides it transversely into two parts, thus enabling the cap 4 to fold over onto the pouring body 2.
  • the cap 4 typically possesses a disc-shaped base 21 and an annular shell 22 externally equipped with a knurling 23 created by numerous ribbings disposed longitudinally relative to the outer wall of the shell in a manner such as to extend substantially over its entire length, as is more clearly shown in Figures 3 to 6.
  • the shell 22 is provided externally with two shoulders 27 and 28 which extend longitudinally substantially over its entire length in alignment with the hinge 5.
  • the two shoulders 27 and 28 are positioned between two ribbings 25 and 26 of the knurling 23 and define a grooving 24 capable of being engaged by interference, at least partially, by the beading 19 of the cap 4.
  • the cap 4 is furthermore equipped with a rounded tab 30 which projects from the free edge 31 of the cap 4 in a position diametrally opposite to the hinge 5.
  • a flange 32 bearing two substantially rectangular bands 33, folded in an arcuate manner and equipped with windows 34 capable of receiving the abovementioned teeth 16, projects from the free edge 31 towards the outside of the cap 4.
  • the said bands 33 possess a free edge 35 directed towards the second portion 7 of the pouring body 2 when the "push-pull" closure 1 is closed, as shown in Figure 4.
  • each window 34 has a striker plate 36, represented in Figure 3, against which rests a tooth 16 of the pouring body 2 when the cap 4 is closed for the first time on the pouring body 2, as will be explained in more detail below.
  • the "push-pull" closure 1 of the present invention is configured, after it has been moulded by widely known technologies, as shown by way of example in Figure 1, in other words as a single piece comprising the pouring body 2 connected to the cap 4 by means of the hinge 5.
  • the stopper 3 is fitted on the first portion 6 of the pouring body 2 in an entirely conventional manner.
  • the cap 4 is rotated through 180°, in a manner such as to bring it above the stopper 3, and pressed onto the pouring body 2 until the interior angle of the edge 31 of the cap 4 passes the semi-annular protuberance 15 positioned on the exterior surface 80 of the ring 8 of the pouring body 2.
  • the edge 35 of the bands 33 easily passes over the teeth 16 by virtue of the inclination of the longer side 163 until the striker plate 36 of the said bands abuts against the shorter side 162 of the said teeth 16.
  • the arcuate elements 17 bearing the teeth 16 in turn produce an abutment both against the flange 32 and against the surface of the bands 33 facing towards the interior of the cap 4 ( Figure 5).
  • the cap 4 may be opened to the point of producing a reversible engagement between the beading 19 present on the exterior surface of its shell 22 and the corresponding grooving 24 provided on the exterior surface of the second portion 7 of the pouring body 2.
  • the "push-pull" closure 1 in accordance with the present invention is particularly hygienic, makes it possible to prevent environmental pollution and, at the same time, can be easily manipulated, in particular by athletes, for example during a competition.
  • the said cap 4 is integrally connected by means of the hinge 5 to the pouring body 2, it is always possible to recover the stopper 3 of the said pouring body, once used.
  • the system of anchoring by means of reversible engagement between the cap 4 and the pouring body 2 prevents the cap 4 moving freely in the vicinity of the pouring body 2, causing inconvenience to a user who wishes to drink while moving.
  • a further advantage provided by the "push-pull" closure of the invention resides in the fact that the said closure may be formed from a mere two pieces, or the pouring body 2 may be integrally connected to the cap 4 by means of the hinge 5 and the stopper 3.
  • a further special feature of the "push-pull" closure 1 resides in the fact that the tamper-proof seal produced between the cap 4 and the pouring body 2 remains attached to the said cap once the first opening of the "push-pull" closure 1 has taken place.
  • the "push-pull" closure 1 in accordance with the present invention may undergo modifications in accordance with requirements or preferences.
  • the said closure may be produced with plastic of the type commonly used to produce "push-pull" closures or stoppers for plastic bottles.
  • the cap 4, the pouring body 2 and the stopper 3 may be formed from plastics of different kinds.
  • the shapes of the parts of the said "push-pull" closure may be varied to suit particular requirements or preferences.
  • the system of reversible attachment between the cap 4 and the pourer 2 may be modified in a manner such as to provide, for example, a fitting such as a push-button and a corresponding seating to receive it.
  • the tamper-proof seal formed by the complex of webs 18, arcuate elements 17 and teeth 16 of the pouring body 2 and by the bands 33 with the windows 34 of the cap 4 may extend along the entire outer rim 83 of the connector ring 8 of the pouring body 2.
  • the hinge 5 in its central portion, possesses a reduced thickness defining a grooving with inclined planes which, preferably, permits opening of the cap 4 through more than 180°.
  • the "push-pull" closure according to the invention makes it possible to satisfy the requirements to which reference is made in the introductory part of the present description and at the same time to overcome the disadvantages exhibited by the "push-pull" closures of the prior art.
