- a piano stool and similar chairs or stools for musicians must be adjustable in height in order to allow the individual pianist or musician to adjust the height to his or hers individual needs. Therefore, the level or vertical height of the seat part is usually adjustable in relation to the base part.
- the base part and the seat part are interconnected by means of a linkage system, which is movable between extended and retracted positions by means of a manually operated screw/nut device.
- these known height adjustment devices allow the pianist or musician to adjust the height of the chair or stool only when it is substantially unloaded, which means that the musician or pianist can adjust the height of the stool or chair only while he or she is raising the behind from the seat part. Consequently, the adjustment operation may take a considerable time.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable piece of furniture, such as a stool or chair of the above type, in which the level or vertical height of the seat part may me adjusted more easily.
- the present invention provides a chair or stool, such as a music stool or piano stool, comprising a frame or base part, a seat part, adjustable supporting means for supporting the seat part in relation to the base part, said supporting means including moving means for moving the seat part in relation to the base part between lower and upper positions along a substantially vertical path of movement, and biasing means for biasing the seat part towards said upper position at least during part of said path of movement so as to counterbalance at least a substantial part of the weight of a grown-up person sitting on the seat part. Because a substantial part of the weight of a musician sitting on the chair or stool is counterbalanced the height of the chair or stool may be adjusted while the pianist or musician is sitting, which render the adjustment procedure much more easy.
- the moving means may be of any type, such as a wire or chain drive, and the seat part may be locked to the base part in an adjusted position by releasable locking means and, in principle, the biasing means could comprise any kind of counterbalancing means, such as a counterweight.
- the moving means comprise at least one screw screw/nut drive, and in order to be able to dispense with releasable locking means the screw/nut drive is preferably of the self-locking type.
- the moving means may be operated by means of a power drive of some kind, such as a motor, which may be an electric motor. Preferably, however, the moving means are manually operated.
- the supporting means supporting the seat part may be of any suitable kind.
- the base part and the seat part may be interconnected by a linkage movable between retracted and extended positions so as to move the seat part between said lower and upper positions, respectively, and a screw member being rotateably mounted on the base part or the seat part and having axially spaced, oppositely threaded sections each engaging with one of a pair of nut members, which are connected to a pair of links of said linkage, whereby the links are pivoted in opposite directions when the screw member is rotated.
- the biasing means may be of any kind being able to bias the seat part towards its upper position and thereby counterbalance a substantial part of the weight of the user of the chair or stool.
- the linkage may be moved towards its retracted and extended positions, respectively, when the screw member is rotated in opposite directions, and the biasing means may then be arranged so as to bias the linkage towards its extended position.
- the biasing means may, for example, be arranged so as to bias the nut members away from each other, whereby the seat part is biased towards its upper position.
- At least one screw member is mounted on the base part or on the seat part and is engaging with female threads provided on the other of said parts, and the screw member and the female threads are mutually rotateable so as to raise or lower the seat part in relation to the base part.
- the supporting means comprise other members providing the necessary stability a single screw member with corresponding female threads may be sufficient.
- transmission means such as a gear drive or a belt or chain drive, may be provided for transmitting mutual rotational movement of one of said sets to all of the other sets. Thereby the relative rotational movements of the screw members may be synchronized.
- One of said sets may be drivingly connected to driving means and be provided with stop means defining the upper and lower positions of the seat part.
- stop means such as a movable abutment surface, which may engage with a fixed abutment surface. Consequently, such excessive forces are not transmitted to the transmission means, which may thereby be protected against overloading and damage.
- the mutual adjustment movements of the base and seat parts may be performed by a power drive, such as an electric motor, and because of the biasing means a relatively small and battery-operated motor may be used.

- said driving means may further comprise a manually operateable handle or knob drivingly interconnected to said one set a screw and corresponding female threads.
- handle or knob is preferably arranged on one side or end of the seat part and may be drivingly connected to said set, for example via a gear train.
- the transmission means may comprise a belt, which is preferably a toothed belt co-operating with corresponding gears associated with each of said sets.
- the said female threads may be formed in nut members, which are rotatably, but not displacably mounted while the corresponding screw members may be fixedly mounted.
- said at least one screw member is rotatably mounted on the seat part without being axially displaceable in relation thereto, while the female threads are fixed in relation to the base part.
- the base part of the chair or stool comprises a plurality of supporting legs, such as three or four, extending downwardly from the base part.
- each screw member may extend into an inner cavity or bore formed in at least some of said legs. This allows for relatively long screw members, whereby the range of height within which the seat part may be adjusted may be relatively wide.
- the bias of the seat part towards its upper position is preferably obtained by arranging the biasing means directly between the base part and the seat part so as to urge the seat part upwardly in relation to the base part.
- the biasing means may be of any suitable type.
- the biasing means comprise at least one compression spring and the compression spring or springs preferably comprise(s) a coil spring and/or a gas spring.
- the spring or springs may be arranged around at least one of said screw members.
- the spring or springs is/are arranged between the screw/nut drives or within the horizontal area defined thereby.
- the seat part may comprise a downwardly extending skirt for covering a possible space defined between the base part and the seat part in any mutual position thereof.
- the skirt may co-operate with a corresponding surface on the base part so as to form guiding surfaces for guiding the mutual vertical movement of the seat and base parts.
- further cooperating guide means may be provided on the base and seat parts, for example projecting guide members, such as rails, pins, or studs on one of said parts co-operating with corresponding guide surfaces on the other part.
- the biasing means should be able to counterbalance a substantial part of the weight of a grown-up person.
- the weight of an average person is about 80 kg and when such person is sitting on a chair or stool only about 65 kg of this weight is transferred to the seat part.
- these 65 kg are counterbalanced by the biasing means. Therefore, the bias of the biasing means should preferably be 200-1100 N, such as 500-800 N, preferably 600-700 N and more preferred about 650 N.
- Fig. 1 shows a piano stool 10 comprising a base part 11 and a seat part 12.
- the base part 11 has a horizontal frame 13 and vertically extending legs 14 extending downwardly from the corners of the frame 13.
- the seat part 12 has an upper seat plate 15, which may be provided with upholstery or cushioning, not shown, and a skirt 16 extending downwardly from the periphery of the seat plate 15.
- each of the legs 14 has an axially extending central bore or cavity 17, and a nut member 18 is fixedly mounted in the upper end of the bore.
- the upper ends of screw spindles 19 are rotateably mounted in the seat plate 15 by means of ball bearings 20 and the lower ends of the screw spindles extend downwardly from the bottom side of the seat plate 15 into engagement with the respective nut members 18.
- a hand wheel 21 connected to a bevel gear 22 is rotateably mounted in an end wall of the skirt 16 such that the hand wheel is arranged on the outer side while the gear 21 is arranged on the inner side of the skirt end wall.
- the bevel gear 22 is in engagement with a corresponding bevel gear 23, which is fixedly mounted on the adjacent screw spindle 19 so that the spindle may be rotated by rotating the hand wheel 21.
- the four screw spindles 19 are interconnected by means of an endless toothed belt 24 which is engaging with corresponding toothed wheel members 25, which are fixedly mounted on the upper ends of the screw spindles 19 adjacent to the bottom side of the seat plate 15.
- the belt 24 is kept tensioned by means of a tensioning roller 26.
- rotation of the hand wheel 21 causes all of the screw spindles 19 to rotate synchronously, whereby the level or vertical position of the seat part 12 may be adjusted.
- the co-operating threads of the spindles 19 and of the nut members 18, respectively are self-locking such that the seat part 12 will remain in an adjusted vertical position even when the seat part is loaded by a grown-up person sitting on the piano stool 10.
- An abutment member 27 is connected to the bottom end of the screw spindle 19 having the bevel gear 23 mounted thereon by means of a screw 28.
- the abutment member 27 defines an annular abutment shoulder, which is in abutting engagement with the bottom end of the adjacent nut member 18 when the seat part 12 is in its uppermost position being determined by such abutting engagement.
- an abutting shoulder (not shown) on the screw spindle may determine the lower position by engaging with a corresponding abutment surface formed on the base part 11.
- An adjustment screw member 29 (Fig. 1) may be screwed into the lower end of at least one of the legs 14 in order to allow adjustment of the length thereof so as to adapt the stool 10 to deviations of the floor surfaces from a completely even horizontal plane.
- a pair of strong compression coil springs 30 are interposed between the seat plate 15 and a longitudinally extending metallic channel member 31 (Fig. 3).
- the channel member 31 is supported by a pair of transverse metal strips 32 each bridging a pair of legs 14 of the base part (Fig, 2).
- the springs 30 are pre-tensioned such that the springs are applying an upwards total bias to the seat part 12 of 500-800 N, preferably 600-800 N and more preferred about 650 N. This means that the pre-tension of the coil springs 30 may counterbalance a substantial part of and preferably substantially the full weight of a grown-up person sitting on the piano stool 10.
- the screw spindles 19 and nut members 18 engaging therewith need not take up the load of the sitting person or only a minor part thereof. Therefore, a user may rather easily adjust the height of the seat part 12 by turning the hand wheel 21 even while the user is sitting and loading the seat plate 15.
- the inner surface of the skirt 16 may comprise guide surface parts engaging with corresponding surface parts 33 (Fig. 5) formed on the base part 11 so as to guide the seat part 12 in relation to the base part 11 when the level or vertical position of the seat part is adjusted by rotating the hand wheel 21.
- the screw spindles 19 and the associated nuts 18 may be replaced by any other device, which may adjustably move the seat part 12 in relation to the base part 11.
- the coil springs 30 may be replaced by any other biasing means, which may counterbalance a substantial part of the weight of a user sitting on the piano stool.
- Such alternative biasing means may, for example, comprise counterweights and gas springs.
