Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electro-pyrotechnic initiator secure high energy.
- the high-energy electro-pyrotechnic initiator works according to the well-known principle of "slapper” or “exploding foil initiator” (EFI).
- EFI explosion foil initiator
- it has an electrical circuit such as a current pulse of a few thousands of amps generated in a few tens of nanoseconds causes the volatilization of a part of the driver (fusible bridge) and the formation of a metallic plasma.
- the very brutal expansion of the plasma confined metal is used to project on the face of a load pyrotechnic (secondary explosive or pyrotechnic composition sensitive) a projectile consisting of a plastic disk of a few tens of micrometers thick and a diameter of about millimeter.
- This disc is produced by cutting through a piece bored (barrel) of a plastic film.
- the initiation of pyrotechnic loading (detonation of the secondary explosive or explosion of the composition pyrotechnic) is caused by the shock of the projectile animated by a speed impact of several kilometers per second.
- bubble slapper In another version of the high electro-pyrotechnic initiator energy, called "bubble slapper", the plastic film is not cut to through the barrel, but forms a bubble whose diameter is limited by the gun. It is the impact of the top of the bubble that initiates the loading pyrotechnic.
- a high energy electro-pyrotechnic initiator type EFI (as described in EP-A-0482969 which discloses the preamble of claim 1 and US-A-5347929) is usually consisting of a connection device comprising two contact pads or two pins electrically connected by the fuse circuit.
- the fuse bridge and the plastic film to project are confined between the barrel and anvil.
- the compressed pyrotechnic charge is placed in a housing in front of the gun.
- the assembly thus formed can be hermetic (French patent 2,669 725).
- the present invention relates to an electro-pyrotechnic initiator slapper type whose reliability is not affected by parasitic currents induced in the circuits connected to it, initiator whose components are simple to manufacture and assemble, inexpensive, and whose triggering characteristics are precise and independent of the surrounding conditions (atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity rate, ).
- the initiator according to the invention of the "slapper" type, with a device connecting to control circuits, fuse circuit, barrel and pyrotechnic charge, is characterized by the fact that it comprises between the connection device and the fuse circuit a discontinuity device calibrated electric.
- the initiator described below is of the type with base connection to two pins and fuse disposed in a plane transverse to its axis, but it it is understood that the invention relates to other types of connections and to fuses arranged differently.
- the electro-pyrotechnic initiator of the invention may as well be of the detonator type with an explosive charge igniter with a charge comprising a pyrotechnic composition. he can be used to initiate the operation of a military charge, a missile or rocket propellant, or a gas generator.
- the embodiment of the initiator 1 shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 essentially comprises the following elements, in order: a base connection 2 having two connection pins 3, 4 isolated between they arrive flush with the rear surface of the base (see Figure 2), a first sheet of dielectric material 5 in which are drilled two holes 6, 7 which are opposite the posterior ends of the pins 3, 4 when this sheet is applied against the posterior face of the base, the diameter of these holes being substantially equal to that of the pins 3, 4, a metal fuse circuit 8 being fixed or formed on the rear face of the sheet 5, a second sheet 9 of dielectric material on the face (opposite the sheet 5) of which are fixed or formed two metal pellets 10, 11, a "gun" 12, and the body 13 of the initiator having on its front face a pyrotechnic charge coaxial 14.
- the body 13 is in the form of a cylindrical bowl whose inside diameter is practically equal to the outside diameter of the base 2.
- the elements 2 and 8 to 14 are made in a known manner in themselves, and are described only briefly.
- the base 2 essentially comprises an annular body 15 in which which is hermetically sealed a glass central disc 16, through which pass the pins 3, 4 hermetically.
- the posterior face of the disc 16 is flat, and the posterior ends of the pins 3, 4 arrive flush with this face, as specified above.
- Sheet 5 which is one of the important and new elements of the invention has a well-defined thickness, which is a function of the voltage of initiation of the initiator, as described below. According to an example of realization, this film has a thickness of several tens of micrometers, by example of about 50 microns.
- the holes 6, 7 made in the sheet 5 are located opposite the posterior ends of the pins 3, 4 when the sheet 5 is mounted in place in the initiator and applied firmly against the rear face of the disk 16.
- the fuse circuit 8 has, for example, a oblong shape have a choke 17 in the middle of its length, and two openings 18, 19 made at its ends, in correspondence with the holes 6, 7. The diameters of the openings 18, 19 are substantially equal those of the holes 6, 7.
- the pellets 10, 11 are coaxial with the holes 6, 7 respectively (when the initiator is mounted), and their diameter is greater than that of these holes.
- the diameter of the pellets 10, 11 is equal to or slightly greater than the width of the oblong shape (measured perpendicular to the line joining the centers of openings 18, 19) of the fuse circuit 8.
- each of these leaves for example two notches 20 diametrically opposite, in which engage in the mounting of the clipping tongues 21, of shape corresponding to that of the notches 20.
- the clipping tabs 21 engage, on assembly, on flats 22 practiced on the periphery of the base 2 so as to align the pins 3, 4 with the holes 6, 7 of the sheet 5 and the pellets 10, 11 of the sheet 9.
- the sheet 5 is made of material flexible dielectric, polyimide for example, a few tens of m thickness, for example 50 ⁇ .
- the fuse circuit 8 is a metal layer a few microns thick, for example 5 microns thick copper.
- the sheet 9 is made of the same material as that of sheet 5, and has a thickness of the same order of magnitude as that of sheet 5, for example 25 ⁇ m.
- the two pellets 10, 11 are each produced by a layer metal a few microns thick, for example thick copper 5 .mu.m.
- the barrel 12 is a piece of insulating material or conductor of a thickness of about 0.2 mm, and it is pierced with a central hole 12A of a diameter of about 1 mm.
- the pyrotechnic charge 14 is constituted secondary explosive or a pyrotechnic composition. It is placed in the body 13 or tablet in situ.
- the assembly of the elements represented in FIG. arrange the sheets 5 and 9 between the barrel 12 and the base 2 by aligning their notches 20 with the flats 22 corresponding, the pellets 10, 11 being applied against the fuse circuit 8, then to firmly apply the barrel against the base, which clips the tabs 21 of the barrel on the flats 22.
- the assembly thus formed is mounted with prestressing in the body 13 wherein the load 14 has been previously mounted.
- the body 13 is then hermetically welded to the base 2, for example by laser welding. We then obtains the device represented in FIGS. 2 and 3.
- the operation of the device described above is as follows.
- the electric pulse of ignition produced in a manner known per se by the circuits connected upstream of the initiator, arrives at the connection pins 3, 4.
- An electric arc is formed immediately between the posterior planar faces of the pins 3, 4 and the metal pads 10, 11.
- These pellets being in contact galvanic with fuse circuit 8, the firing current flows through the throttling 17 of this fuse circuit by sublimating it.
- the metallic plasma thus formed propels the central portion of the sheet 9 through the hole 12A of the gun 12 at a very high speed (of the order of 3000 to 4000 m / s).
- the impact this part of sheet 9 on the pyrotechnic charge 14 causes its initiation.
- the initiator Since the initiator is hermetically sealed, it is easy to control the quality of the atmosphere it contains (dry air, pressure and a well-defined composition). In addition, the distance between pellets 10, 11 and the posterior end of the pins 3, 4 is perfectly defined by the thickness of sheet 5, the electric arc produced inside the the initiator appears for a voltage, sent to pins 3, 4, well defined, and these conditions are reproducible for all initiators. Considering the small thickness of the sheet 5 (a few tens of microns in general), the energy absorbed by the discontinuity of the firing circuit (no electrical contact between the pins 3, 4 and the fuse circuit 8) is weak and the The operation of the initiator remains very reliable.
- the other advantages of the initiator of the invention are: rigid and robust construction (high mechanical strength of the body 13 and of the base 2), the hermeticity of the enclosure formed by the body and the base, this which ensures a long life to the initiator and characteristics of trigger stable over time and whatever the environment (humidity and altitude), simplicity of manufacture of the various components and assembly and implementation.
