Definitions
- the technical field of the present invention is that of devices allowing the fixing of a priming system on a body of a grenade, in particular of a grenade with a shaped charge intended to be carried and dispersed on trajectory by a projectile (shell or rocket).
- the priming systems of such grenades are generally fixed to the body of the grenade by riveting or screwing.
- Such a fixing device does not allow the priming system to be easily replaced by a new system, for example a more efficient system, incorporating for example a self-destruct device.
- the rivets must be cut and they can no longer be used to fix a new priming system.
- the grenade body cannot be reused and the grenade must be completely replaced.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a device for fixing a priming system on a grenade body which allows, in a safe and economical manner, a subsequent replacement of the priming system.
- the invention also relates to a method for easily securing a priming system and a grenade body.
- the method according to the invention also makes it possible to ensure such a joining in the context of an operation to upgrade a stock of grenades.
- the subject of the invention is a device for fixing a priming system on a body of a grenade, device characterized in that it is constituted by a support made integral by a means of fixing the body of the grenade , support comprising a thin cylindrical wall, an upper edge of which is crimped onto the priming system.
- the support may consist of a cup having a bottom wall secured to the cylindrical wall and disposed in abutment on an upper face of the grenade body.
- the cup will present for example at least two holes allowing the passage of rods integral with the grenade body.
- the cup can be made integral with the rods by welding.
- the support may consist of a tube which is fixed by welding at an external wall of the body.
- the external wall on which the tube will be fixed may include a shoulder constituting a stop for the tube.
- the external wall on which the tube is fixed may be rounded, the end of the tube then having a flared part and a chamfer.
- the subject of the invention is also a method of fixing a priming system on a body of a grenade, a method characterized by the following steps:
- the tube portion is fixed by welding to the grenade body
- the priming system is placed inside the tube, - the tube is crimped onto the priming system.
- Another subject of the invention is another method of attaching a priming system to a body of a grenade, a method characterized by the following steps: -a portion of a metal tube is cut,
- a flange forming a crimping stop is produced at one end of the tube, before placing it around a priming system or after having placed it around the priming system,
- the tube portion is fixed by welding to the grenade body.
- the part of the grenade body on which the tube is applied is rounded, there will be a slight flaring of the end of the front tube or when positioning the tube on the grenade body, this in order to widen the relative contact surface between the tube and the grenade body.
- Welding can be performed by laser.
- Laser welding can be performed so as to cut one end of the tube so as to provide an end chamfer at this end of the tube.
- FIG. 2 represents a first embodiment of a fixing device according to the invention
- FIG. 3 represents a second embodiment of a fixing device according to the invention
- FIG. 4 shows the different stages of the fixing method according to the invention
- FIG. 5a and 5b are two detail views of two alternative embodiments of the welding of the tube on the grenade body.
- Figure 1 shows a grenade 1 of known type (as described for example by US Pat. No. 3,913,483.
- a metallic body 2 which contains an explosive charge 3 on which a metallic coating 4 is applied which is substantially conical.
- a priming system 5, of a known type and of which only the external profile is shown here, is fixed to the body 2 of the grenade by a fixing device which comprises four rivets 6 regularly distributed angularly (here only two rivets are visible ).
- the rivets 6 pass through an upper face 7 of the grenade body 2 through holes 8.
- the head 6a of the rivets is embedded in the explosive charge 3.
- the deformable tail 6b of the rivets 6 is applied to the priming system 5.
- the shanks 6b of the rivets must first be cut to remove the priming system 5.
- the shortened rivets are then difficult to use for fixing another priming system.
- the geometry of the latter must be adapted to allow cooperation with the rivets.
- FIG. 2 shows a first embodiment of a fixing device according to the invention.
- the priming system 5 is made integral with the body 2 of the grenade by means of a metallic support 9 comprising a thin cylindrical wall 10, an upper edge 11 of which is crimped onto the priming system 5 .
- the support 9 consists of a cup having a bottom wall 12 secured to the cylindrical wall 10 and disposed in abutment on the upper face 7 of the body 2 of the grenade.
- the cup 9 will be made for example from stamped sheet steel 1 mm thick. It has holes 13 allowing the passage of the rods of the rivets 6 secured to the body 2 of the grenade.
- the cup 9 and the body 2 will be secured together by crimping the ends 6b of the rivets 6 on the cup 9 (see the right rivet in FIG. 2).
- the rivets 6 will have been cut beforehand to an appropriate length allowing crimping on the thin cup 9.
- the thickness of the cup is of the order of 1 mm, it is therefore easy to shorten the rivets usually encountered (which have a length of the order of 10 mm) so as to give them an appropriate dimension for crimping. It is however necessary to provide in the priming system 5 a clearance 14 avoiding any interference with the tails 6b of the rivets.
- the rivets 6 can be cut so that their end is flush with the interior of the cup 9. We will then fix the cup 9 by welding, for example by laser, the ends of the rivets on the cup.
- the laser welding will be carried out by causing the cup and the rivet to heat up along the circular contact line of the rivet 6 with the hole 13 in the cup 9.
- the fixing device according to the invention can replace a priming system such as that according to Figure 1 by another priming system.
- the rivets are reused without the need to remove the explosive from the grenade body.
- the cup allows the attachment of a priming system, of any shape and structure, on the body of the grenade. It also makes it easy to fix a priming system, the structure of which will be made in materials very different from those of the grenade body, for example plastic or zinc / aluminum alloy (alloys well known under the brand zamak).
- the device according to the invention can also be used for a new grenade. It will authorize a subsequent replacement of the boot system by another system. It will suffice to proceed with the desoldering of the rim 11 of the cup to dismantle the priming system. A new system can be replaced and the cup will be refilled.
- Figure 3 shows a second embodiment of a fixing device according to the invention.
- the support 9 is constituted by a tube which is fixed by welding at an external wall of the body 2.
- FIG. 5b shows in an enlarged manner the end of the tube 9 which is welded to the body 2.
- the external wall 15 of the body 2 on which the tube 9 is fixed is rounded.
- the end of the tube 9 has a flared part 16 and a chamfer 17.
- the flaring 16 of the tube 9 will be carried out using an appropriate tool, for example a mandrel having the desired shape and on which the tube will be applied with a sufficient compression force allowing the plastic deformation of the tube.
- the flaring may possibly be carried out directly on the body 2 of the grenade.
- the weld between the tube 9 and the body 2 will be a laser weld produced according to a circular crown and with an orientation R of the radiation such that it cuts the end of the tube 9 so as to produce both the weld and the end chamfer 17.
- the chamfer makes it possible to avoid excess thickness at sharp angles on the body which would risk causing the tube 9 to be torn off when the grenades are dispersed out of their carrier (shell or rocket).
- the external wall of the grenade body 2 has a shoulder 18 which constitutes a stop allowing axial positioning of the tube 9.
- the tube is fixed to the body for example by laser welding. along a circular crown and with an orientation R substantially perpendicular to the tube and to the external wall of the body 2 of the grenade.
- the priming system 5 is positioned inside the tube 9 and the upper flange 11 is crimped onto the priming system 5.
- Figure 4 summarizes the different steps of the method according to the invention allowing the attachment of a priming system on a body of a grenade.
- a portion 9 is cut from a metal tube, for example made of steel 1 mm thick.
- this portion of tube 9 is capped with part of an external surface of a body 2 of the grenade and the portion of tube 9 is fixed by welding R to the body 2 of the grenade.
- the welding will preferably be a laser welding.
- step C the priming system 5 is placed inside the tube 9.
- tube D the tube 9 is crimped onto the priming system 5.
- the tube 9 may be given its final length from step A or else the tube may be cut to its final length after it has been welded to the body (step B).
- step A it will be possible after step A to go to a step E during which a collar forming a crimping stop 11 will be produced at one end of the tube 9.
- This collar may be produced as shown here after placing the tube around the priming system 5.
- a support tool 19 will be provided which will include a cylindrical part receiving the tube 9 and having a height corresponding to that of the part of the grenade body which will subsequently receive the tube 9.
- this flange 11 can be produced using an appropriate tool separate from the priming system.
- step F a part of an external surface of the grenade body 2 is capped with the tube 9 carrying the priming system 5 and the portion of tube 9 is fixed by welding R to the grenade body 2.
- the welding will again be a laser welding.
- the methods proposed by the invention can be used to manufacture new grenades.
- the bodies 2 of grenades will be prepared by separating from them the old priming system, for example by cutting the fixing rivets.
- the next step is to fix the new priming system using one or other of the methods according to the invention.
