Definitions
- the invention relates to electronic keyboards allowing provide an interface for entering information or instructions into a electronic machine (computer or other) controlled by a user.
- Document DE 36 30 898 A shows a keyboard according to the preamble of claim 1.
- the keyboard keys are either keys representing each an alphanumeric character, i.e. keys ensuring each the performance of a specific function.
- the keys In some cases, we want the keys to be lit to be better visible. These are mainly cases where the user has to work in a night environment. For example, standards require that some, if not all, keys to some keyboards are lit at night. Indeed, the night piloting of the plane or the helicopter is done from an unlit cockpit, and it is necessary that functionally important keys are perfectly visible and identifiable without error by the pilot.
- the keyboard is generally composed of a printed circuit on which components are welded, and among these components there are pressure-operated mini-switches. These switches are located each under a respective key on the keyboard, and pressing the finger on the key is transmitted to the switch to activate it.
- Illumination of the transparent key from the back is hampered by the presence of the switch component under the key.
- generally soldered light emitting diodes are used on the circuit board next to the switch but the amount of light issued is often insufficient to meet needs.
- the invention provides a different keyboard structure allowing to illuminate the keys as much as possible from the rear.
- the subject of the invention is an electronic keyboard comprising a rigid printed circuit on which at least one switch can be soldered be operated indirectly by a user's finger, at least one touch partly transparent overcoming the switch and a means of lighting intended to illuminate the key from below it, rays light from the lighting means being visible to the user by the transparent part of the key, characterized in that the keyboard has in addition a flexible printed circuit inserted between the key and the circuit rigid printed circuit carrying the switch, in that the flexible printed circuit has a rigid part located between the key and the switch, in that the lighting means comprises a light-emitting diode welded to the rigid part between the key and the switch and in that the key comprises a cavity surrounded by a peripheral edge, the diode being housed in the cavity and the peripheral edge coming to bear on the rigid part around the diode.
- the flexible printed circuit comprises supply conductors current to the light emitting diode.
- the transparent key has a hollow shape to the rear, with a peripheral edge surrounding a cavity, the diode being housed in the cavity; the peripheral edge comes to bear on the rigid part of the flexible printed circuit, around the diode. It is therefore by the periphery of the cavity that the key can apply pressure to the rigid part of the flexible printed circuit. This pressure is transmitted to the switch by this rigid part.
- the flexible printed circuit can be used as a spring recall the button to return the button to its rest position by the absence of any pressure exerted by the user's finger.
- Flexible printed circuit can be electrically connected directly to the rigid printed circuit, or both can be connected separately to the electronic device (calculator or other) controlled by the keyboard.
- the keyboard has a circuit rigid print 10 (thickness of about 2 millimeters for example) on which are arranged on the one hand mini-switches (20) each corresponding to a key on the keyboard, and on the other hand engraved electrical conductors allowing to connect these switches outside the keyboard to detect the open or closed state of the switches.
- a circuit rigid print 10 thickness of about 2 millimeters for example
- connection between the keyboard and the outside i.e. the connection with the electronic device controlled by the keyboard (computer or other) is for example via a connector on the circuit printed, and by flexible cables or ribbons going from this connector to the device. This connection is classic and does not need to be described here.
- Each switch is thus connected to the outside by conductors printed and through the connector, so that we can detect the status of the switch and trigger the desired functionality for the key when pressing it causes closure (or exceptionally opening) of the switch.
- the switch 20 is a component welded to the surface of the printed circuit 10. It includes an internal mechanical contactor, not visible, connected to printed circuit conductors and actuated by depression of an elastic plunger 22 at the top of the component 20.
- Key 30 on the keyboard which acts as an actuatable push button manually to activate a function, is at least partly transparent (for example in organic glass) because we want to light it with a source of - light placed at the rear (below the button in Figure 1).
- This button is located exactly above the switch component 20 of so that pressing the key causes the actuation of the switch. In the most common case of pressure actuation direct finger, it is expected that pressing the button will cause mechanically depressing the pusher 22 of the switch 20, which in practice means that there must be a rigid connection between the key and the pusher 22.
- the button 30 is inserted in a housing 42 of form appropriate of a housing 40 of the keyboard.
- the button can be pressed freely at the interior of this accommodation but cannot leave it, for example thanks to overhangs 44 of the casing above the lateral edges of the key. If the keyboard must be waterproof, a seal 46 may be provided between the button 30 and the housing 40.
- the rigid printed circuit 10 is fixed to the housing by means not shown located for example at the periphery of the keyboard.
- the space between the casing and the printed circuit is sufficient to accept the height of the components of the printed circuit, in particular the switches 20.
- a flexible printed circuit 50 is fixed to the housing 40 of the keyboard and is interposed between the printed circuit and the keys.
- This flexible printed circuit carries a light emitting diode 60 located above the component switch 20 and below the center of the button 30. It also has diode supply conductors, and possibly other elements of circuit. The light emission below the center of the button allows to light it from behind.
- the flexible printed circuit 50 includes flexible parts 52 and rigid parts 54.
- the greater local rigidity is imparted by example by a greater local thickness of the flexible film which constitutes the printed circuit 50, or by one or more rigid plates glued on the flexible film where you want to make it rigid.
- a rigid part 54 is located below each key and on a surface such that pressing the button presses the bottom of the button against the rigid part 54 and so that this rigid part 54 transmits the pressure of the key to the push button 22 of the switch component 20.
- the flexible parts 52 allow sufficient movement of the rigid parts 54 during this depression to actuate the switch 20.
- the light-emitting diode 60 is soldered to the upper part of the rigid part 54 and is housed in a cavity 32 formed in the center of the transparent button on the rear side thereof; this cavity is open downwards.
- the button comes into contact, at the periphery of this cavity 32, directly with the rigid part 54, and this is so the peripheral edge 34 of the button which transmits the pressure to the rigid part 54 of flexible circuit 50 without pressing the diode electroluminescent 60.
- the flexible printed circuit is fixed to the casing for example by screws, or by gluing. It can also be attached locally to the keys 30, by their lower surface, at the periphery 34 of the cavity 32. In this case, part of flexible film must extend between a fixing point on the button and a attachment point on the housing.
- the attachment points on the button can be provided in the flexible part or in the rigid part of the circuit soft print.
- the cavity 32 which surrounds the diode light emitting at a height (above the diode) relatively important (for example two or three times the height of the diode), and that the side interior walls of the cavity are quite highly reflective.
- a side spacer 36, opaque and colored white can surround the diode over the entire height of the cavity 32.
- a light filter 38 In the bottom of the cavity 32, above the diode, one can have a light filter 38. It is for example a colored filter if the diode light emitting white light when we want the key emits red or green light, etc. This filter can also be a filter eliminating infrared emissions, or any other filter depending on the user needs.
- the printed conductors of the flexible printed circuit 50 must be connected to a power source to operate the diodes.
- a connector is preferably provided to ensure transmission of this energy.
- This connector can be connected directly to a connector complementary to the rigid printed circuit 10, in particular if the source energy comes from the printed circuit 10.
- the two connectors can then be located directly one above the other (plugging in preferably perpendicular to the plane of the two printed circuits).
- Figure 2 shows a top view of the printed circuit flexible, with its rigid parts 54 indicated in dotted form (areas of greater thickness of the flexible printed circuit) and the diodes electroluminescent 60 welded on each rigid part.
- the keyboard has a narrow band shape surrounding the periphery of a rectangle or a square 70 reserved for a screen of viewing.
- the flexible printed circuit 50 then has the shape of this strip narrow as seen in Figure 2.
- the keys (not shown) on the keyboard are distributed evenly along this strip, with the same distribution as diodes 60 since a diode is placed just below of each key.
- Conductors 56 are etched on the printed circuit flexible and bring current to all the diodes from a connector 80 preferably formed on an edge of the flexible circuit. In the most simple, there are two conductors that run along the entire narrow strip and which supply all the diodes in parallel, but we will understand that can provide a different circuit if functions are desired more complex illuminations.
- Connector 80 can be vertical plugged in (plugged in a movement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the printed circuit flexible 50 and rigid printed circuit 10), with a corresponding connector fixed on the rigid printed circuit 10, the flexibility of the flexible circuit allowing the approximation of the connectors and their insertion.
- Connectors can also be plugged in horizontally.
- the flexible printed circuit is folded back on itself at its end to facilitate insertion.
- the connector 80 can then be placed at the end of a diverging strip extension enough of the rectangle on which the diodes are arranged.
- the keyboard can in any case have a shape different from a strip running around a square or rectangle. He can be himself rectangular with touches distributed over almost the entire surface of the rectangle.
- the flexible printed circuit then has a rectangular shape corresponding with rigid pads and light emitting diodes distributed like the keys on the whole rectangular surface.
