Abstract
Description
The invention is in the field of detection of fires in tunnels, for which detection systems with a linear thermal sensor are used today. Such a detection system is sold under the designation FibroLaser by Siemens Building Technologies AG, Cerberus Division, formerly Cerberus AG. This system includes a fiber optic cable mounted on the tunnel ceiling, a laser light source and an opto-electronic receiver. The laser generated light is coupled into the fiber optic cable and guided in the longitudinal direction. Density fluctuations of the quartz glass caused by heat cause a continuous scattering (Rayleigh scattering), which in turn causes an attenuation of the laser light. In addition, thermal lattice vibrations of the glass material cause further light scattering, the so-called Raman scattering.
A fraction of the scattered light falls within the aperture angle of the waveguide and propagates in both the forward and reverse directions. The scattered light can be detected with the opto-electronic receiver; By evaluating the intensity of certain backscatter frequencies, the local fiberglass temperature can be determined. The local resolution of the temperature profile along the fiber optic cable is made by attenuation measurement of the waveguide light. The size of the fire is a function of the heated cable run: a short, heated stretch corresponds to a small and a long, heated stretch corresponds to a large fire.

The present invention relates to a method of configuring a tunnel fire detection system including a linear thermal sensor with a sensor cable. The inventive method should make it possible to set detection systems for tunnel fires already in the planning with high flexibility to the physical and local conditions of a tunnel individually.
The stated object is achieved according to the invention by calculating the fire development and the alarming time on the basis of parameters of the tunnel and of the sensor cable and using a fire model and optimizing the installation location of the sensor cable and the alarm limits of the detection system in such a way that a possible fire is detected quickly and reliably ,
The method according to the invention is essentially a model for the simulation of different fires in a tunnel for the efficient and targeted planning of new plants and for the determination of the corresponding test fires for the testing of these plants.
A first preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the parameters of the tunnel contain data about the tunnel dimensions and the wind conditions in the tunnel.

In the fire development submodel, the reaction enthalpy, the energy balance and the buoyancy in the reaction zone and the development of the fire are calculated. In the partial model behavior of the combustion gases in the cooling zone (so-called plume model), essentially a calculation of the behavior of the flow of hot combustion gases takes place due to the mixing with the surrounding gas in a turbulent boundary zone.

Experiences in the detection of tunnel fires show that for a reliable and rapid fire detection the burning behavior and the size of the fire, the wind conditions, the tunnel geometry, the spatial arrangement of the sensors and the place of the fire must be considered. In many cases, a detection system with a linear thermal sensor is used, as offered for example by Siemens Building Technologies AG, Cerberus Division, formerly Cerberus AG, under the name FibroLaser . The FibroLaser is assumed to be known; Reference is made in this connection to the introduction of the present specification and to the brochures of the FibroLaser system.
Since it is almost impossible because of the complex thermodynamic processes in a fire to consider all factors even to some extent, the configuration of a detection system with a linear heat sensor is extremely complicated and time consuming and associated with many practical experiments. The present method facilitates the configuration considerably by providing the application engineer with a simulation program confirmed by laboratory and large-scale tests, with which the alarming time resulting from given installation parameters is calculated and thus the system parameters can be tuned to a given alarming time.
- Brandentwicklung
- Wärmeaustausch durch Strahlung und Konvektion sowie Wärmeleitung im Sensorkabel
- Calculation of the reaction enthalpy based on an elemental analysis of the flammable substances
- Energy balance and mass balance in the reaction zone
- Length of the reaction zone
- Energy balance in the plume (= cooling zone above the reaction zone)
- Fluid mechanics in the plume on the basis of a free-jet model
- Influence of the wind in the tunnel on reaction zone and plume
- Brand development
- Heat exchange by radiation and convection as well as heat conduction in the sensor cable
- Fire Diameter: Diameter of the circle of equal area with the entire surface of the fuel.
- Tunnel height: distance between the carriageway and the tunnel height, whereby in the case of a tunnel with a curved ceiling, a mean ceiling height in the vault area is generally assumed, but in any case must be above the sensor cable.
- Tunnel width: Shortest distance of tunnel walls at half tunnel height.
- Distance sensor - ground: shortest distance between sensor cable and roadway; this distance is always smaller than the tunnel height.
- Distance Sensor - Fire: Shortest distance between the center of the fire surface and the sensor cable; this distance is usually greater than the distance between the sensor and the ground.
- Wind: The wind speed corresponds to the air velocity averaged over the tunnel cross section along the roadway. If a strong cross-flow is stimulated by fans, which is greater than the wind speed along the road, the cross-speed is used.
- Wind in the area of the sensor cable: The wind in the tunnel has a profile that tends to zero at the walls and ceiling. If the sensor cable is mounted close to the ceiling or wall, this effect must be considered. The rich values can be taken from a table.
- Tunnel pressure: ambient pressure in the fire area; depends mainly on the sea level.
- Tunnel temperature: Ambient temperature in the fire area; has an influence on the triggering of the alarm temperature in the detection system in winter.
- Sensor diameter: Outer diameter of the sensor cable.
- Alarm temperature: Temperature threshold at which the detection system should report a fire alarm when it is reached / exceeded. This value is usually in the range of 50 ° to 80 ° C. Alarm temperatures below 50 ° C can trigger false alarms in the entrances and exits of the tunnels.
- Gradient of the alarm temperature: From the increase of the temperature over the time, the gradient determining the threshold for the triggering of a fire alarm is determined. If the temperature rises faster than the threshold per second, an alarm will sound. In general, this threshold is 0.1 ° C / sec, corresponding to 6 ° C per minute.
- Rate of fire acceleration: With unrestricted air supply to the fire, the rate of fire growth increases linearly with time. For the burnup rate Q * of a fire with the fire area A at time t, Q * = ABt 2 , the so-called rate of acceleration of fire B being a measure of the fire development up to full fire. For B there are empirical values stored in a table.
Basically, all the parameters mentioned above are always based on the worst case scenario. For example, this is the length of the diagonal between the sensor cable and the edge of the roadway for the distance between sensor and fire. Of course, a burning tarpaulin of a truck is much closer to the sensor cable, but that's no problem because such a fire would be detected much earlier. The fire diameter, which is the fire surface, is known in passenger cars and lorries in tunnels, and is assumed, for example, 1 meter, which corresponds to a fire surface of about 0.8 m 2 .
Then the calculation model is selected in the sensor cable. This consists of a fiberglass coated with fiberglass, a surrounding the glass fiber with its sheath steel capillary with a diameter of 1.6 mm, for example, and an outer jacket made of polyethylene with a diameter of about 8 mm. The sensor cable is heated by circulating combustion gases (convective heat exchange) as well as by radiation, whereby both types of heat flows can occur separately or simultaneously. For the heating of the cable and the glass fiber two different calculation models, the homogeneous model and the differential model, can be used, which differ in the accuracy and in the computing speed.
In a fire, substances in the burned material are oxidized with the atmospheric oxygen in the reaction zone, the heat energy released by these oxidation reactions heating the gases in the reaction zone. In most fires, the elements oxidize carbon, hydrogen and sulfur; halogens possibly contained in the combustible material preferably react with the hydrogen. For the simulation, the content of halogens as well as of rare metals is assumed to be negligible.
SO 2 are then formed in the reaction zone, releasing certain amounts of heat per mole. In the case of an oxygen deficiency, more CO is formed and at the same time the water gas reaction plays an important role, whereby this energy-consuming reduction depends on the supply of the starting materials and on the temperature in the reaction zone. From the known reaction scheme, the oxygen demand can be determined stoichiometrically with ideal, complete combustion and from this, the fire mass and the mass fraction of the supply air, the stoichiometric air mass.
In a natural convection fire, more air is reacted in the reaction zone than the stoichiometry of the combustion reactions requires; this extra air is the excess air. These can be calculated from the so-called k B factor, which is used to determine the minimum oxygen content from the guidelines for inert gas extinguishing systems. The minimum oxygen content is the O 2 concentration required to maintain the combustion reactions, which may be above the stoichiometric air requirement.
In case of incomplete combustion CO and CO increase at the expense of CO 2 . In this case, the oxygen demand is greater than the supply air can replenish in the reaction zone. From the mass proportions of carbon, hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen in the flammable material and from the mass fraction of the incoming air, it is possible to determine the proportion of CO 2 in the combustion gas and from this the other reaction products and reaction enthalpies.
The released heat of combustion or reaction enthalpy of the fuel can also be determined stoichiometrically. In addition, the combustion enthalpies of most substances have been determined experimentally in the fire regulations (sprinkler guidelines, DIN 4201, DIN 18232, etc.) and can be found in the corresponding tables.
From the fire gas composition in the reaction zone, the heating power is calculated in the reaction zone and the resulting temperature is iterated with the flame length and the enthalpy and mass balance. Finally, the momentum balance in the region of the reaction zone is determined from the gas volume flow and the gas velocity over the reaction zone, and the burning rate is iterated according to the total mass balance. As soon as the burn rate meets the desired fire duration, the plume evolution from the reaction zone to the ceiling is included in the momentum, mass and enthalpy balances, taking into account the air mixing and wind correction.
In the cooling zone above the reaction zone, the hot combustion gases in a turbulent boundary zone mix with the surrounding gas, e.g. Air, which widens the vertically upward flowing gas stream. For the simulation, it is assumed that the behavior of the rising combustion gases corresponds to a turbulent free jet with the reaction zone as the jet core. The decrease of the temperature as a function of the height can be detected with an energy balance over the height layer and the average ascent rate can be detected by means of a momentum balance over the local plume cross-section, so that finally results in the local speed decrease in the plume.
It is assumed that the plume opens like a turbulent free jet with an opening angle of 8 ° to 15 °. This angle dependence can be determined from the pressure difference between the beam and the environment. At wind speeds of up to 10 m / s, a turbulent longitudinal flow forms in the tunnel cross section, the turbulence bales of which are considerably smaller than the tunnel cross section. Despite the high Reynolds number in the range of 10 6, this air flow can be described as laminar compared to the tunnel dimensions. From this point of view, the assumption is that the momentum current of the wind is superimposed on the momentum current of the plume, so that the gases in the plume are carried away by the wind, without the plume being completely swirled. The plume receives by the wind influence a certain angle of inclination, which can be determined from the ratio of the gas velocity in the plume to the wind speed in the tunnel.
As a result of the fire development calculation sub-program, the temperature in the reaction zone and the temperature in the plume at full burn are obtained.

The temperature profile in the cable then forms the temperature gradient in the main program. Then it is checked whether in the simulation of the plume reaches the cable within the radiation field; if so, there is a superposition of convection and radiation. Subsequently, a test is made as to whether two measuring locations of the cable lie within the radiation field; if not, there is an attenuation of the radiation surface temperature. Finally, the alarm criteria are checked and the alarm time is printed out in time step t. After reaching the given total duration of the simulation t End the alarm criteria are printed out and the simulation is finished.
The user now knows whether the desired alarm time can be achieved with the entered parameters, or whether the or some of the parameters must be changed.
