Definitions
- the present invention relates to steam irons which include a water tank communicating with a vaporization chamber by means of a nozzle joint having a vertical communication well, and a regulating device.
- a water intake flow rate in the vaporization chamber comprising a vertical plug whose lower end has a bulge and whose upper end is secured to a manual control button, said plug being movable in a translational movement axial inside the well of the nozzle joint, under the action of the manual control button, between a so-called dry position in which the plug completely closes the well, and at least one so-called vaporization position in which water can pass through the well.
- the plug of generally cylindrical shape is mounted tight and passing through the well of the nozzle joint and its bulge opens permanently into the vaporization chamber; the plug has a longitudinal groove over part of its length and is moved axially to come occupy either its dry position in which the two ends of the groove are located on the same side of the well, thus preventing any passage of water , or its vaporization position in which the two ends of the groove are located on either side of the well, thus allowing the passage of water in the vaporization chamber via the groove of the plug.
- the thru bushel is in surface contact over the entire height of the seal well 2 nozzle, each maneuver of the plug by the user creates a significant stress on the nozzle joint which works at relatively high temperature.
- the pressure drops of the plug are relatively high, so that when the plug is in its vaporization position, also called the steam position, the water flow passing continuously through the vaporization chamber turns out to be particularly irregular, all the more so as the water level in the tank drops during ironing; the continuous steam flow which results therefrom is therefore itself very irregular, thereby affecting the quality of the ironing of the laundry.
- the object of the invention is in particular to remedy these drawbacks and to produce a steam iron equipped with a device for adjusting the water flow rate, of the type described above, which is simple, inexpensive, reliable and particularly effective in ensuring, in the steamed position, a great regularity of the water flow continuously whatever the water level in the tank.
- the bulge of the plug is mounted tight in the well of the nozzle joint and punctually punctures a vertical groove which is formed over part of the height of the well and which thus delimits with the bulge of the plug a section of passage of water when the plug is in its spraying position.
- the bulge of the plug defines with the vertical groove of the nozzle joint a section of water passage which is 3 now very punctual, thus making it possible to obtain a very regular water flow rate both when the water level in the tank is maximum and when it becomes very low, which therefore leads to a vapor flow rate itself very regular, and therefore, a high quality of ironing of the laundry.
- the well of the nozzle joint has a lower part which is closed by the bulge of the plug when the latter is in its dry position, while the vertical groove extends above the part lower well and has a section varying continuously increasing towards the upper edge of the well, the plug thus passing from its dry position to its vaporization position in an axial translation movement directed upwards.
- in the well of the nozzle joint is formed at least one vertical slot extending over a height between -the upper end of the groove and the upper edge of the well, so that the plug, as a result of an axial displacement upwards according to a predetermined stroke, comes to occupy a so-called self-cleaning position in which the bulge of the plug discovers the slot while being partially in abutment the internal face of the vertical wall of the well so as to form a passage allowing an abundant flow of water.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic view in partial section with cutaway of an iron equipped with a device for adjusting the water flow rate according to the invention, in the dry position (no steam);
- FIG. 2 is a partial sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of a part of the device for adjusting the water flow rate of Figure 1, the latter occupying a steam position at a predetermined flow rate;
- Figures 3 to 5 are views similar to Figure 1 and respectively showing the device for adjusting the water flow in steam position at minimum flow (Figure 3), in steam position at maximum flow ( Figure 4) and in position self-cleaning (Figure 5).
- the iron shown in Figures 1 and 3 to 5 has a sole 10 comprising a heating base 11 in which is formed a vaporization chamber 12 closed by a cover 13, and a thin ironing plate 14 which is fixed on the face bottom of the heating base 11 by any suitable fixing means and the external face of which forms a meal surface- 5 wise; the vaporization chamber 12 communicates, via steam distribution channels 15 hollowed out in the underside of the base 11, with steam outlet holes 16 drilled in the plate 14.
- a water tank 17 having a horizontal upper wall 18 and a horizontal bottom wall 19 from which a vertical chimney 21 is formed, for example of cylindrical shape.
- the reservoir 17 communicates with the vaporization chamber 12 by means of a nozzle joint 23 made of a flexible plastic material, such as an elastomer of the silicone type, and pierced with a vertical well 25, for example of cylindrical shape, which is coaxial with the chimney 21 of the reservoir 17, the upper edge 27 of which is located in the lower outlet of the chimney 21, and which opens into the vaporization chamber 12 through an opening 29 made in the cover 13.
- the nozzle seal 23 is held in sealed abutment against the cover 13, around the opening 29 thereof, by means of a compression coil spring 30 interposed coaxially around the well 25 between the seal 23 and an annular shoulder 31 formed on the internal wall of the chimney 21 of the reservoir 17.
- the iron also comprises a device 35 for adjusting the flow rate of water admission into the vaporization chamber, as well as a drip-proof device 37 associated with the reservoir 17 and arranged laterally at the chimney 21 of the reservoir 17, for example to the right of this chimney as shown in these figures 1 and 3 to 5.
- the device 35 for adjusting the water flow rate comprises a vertical cylindrical plug 39, of axis XX ′, mounted coaxially inside the chimney 21 of the tank 17, the upper end 41 of which is secured to a manual control button 43, of the rotary type in this exemplary embodiment, projecting in the upper region of the iron, and the lower end 44 of which is shaped like a warhead, better visible in FIG. 2, having a bulge or bead ring finger 46.
- the chimney 21 of the reservoir 17 rises over a height greater than the maximum water level of the reservoir, thus making it possible to dispense with any seal between the chimney and the plug which passes through it.
- the plug 39 is axially movable inside the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23, under the action of the rotary button 43, being subject, in this example, to means allowing it to impart a helical movement resulting from a rotational movement accompanied by an axial translational movement.
- these means for imparting a helical movement to the plug 39 include a wing forming a cam 48 which extends radially on the plug 39, at the upper end 41 thereof. ci, and which is able to move, by rotation of the button 43, on a ramp 50 produced on the upper edge of the chimney 21 of the tank 17.
- the plug 39 with helical displacement is capable of coming to occupy 7 either a so-called dry position (without steam) in which it completely closes the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23, or at least one so-called vaporization position, also called steam position, in which the water can pass, in the well 25 and be injected into the vaporization chamber 12 at a predetermined flow rate.
- the means making it possible to impart a helical movement to the plug 39 consist of suitable means for transforming a linear movement into a movement helical.
- the annular bulge 46 of the plug 39 is mounted tightly in the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23 and punctually punctures a vertical groove 52 which is formed on a part of the height of the well 25 and which thus delimits with the bulge 46 of the plug 39 a water passage section when the plug 39 is in its steam position.
- the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23 comprises, substantially in its lower part, a narrowed annular region 54, better visible in FIG. 2, which forms a seat receiving the annular bulge 46 of the plug 39 when the latter occupies its dry position (see FIG. 1), thereby closing the well 25, and therefore preventing the injection of water.
- the vertical groove 52 extends above this narrowed part 54 of the well and has a section varying continuously increasing towards the upper edge. 27 of the well 25, thus enabling the plug 39 to come to occupy a steam position with continuously adjustable water flow rate, therefore with variable steam flow rate, for example of the order of 5 to 40 g / min.
- the plug 39 is shown in the steam position at minimum flow rate in which its annular bulge 46 punctually bridges the lower end 52a of the groove 52, allowing a drop by drop flow from the water in the vaporization chamber 12, while in FIG. 4, the plug 39 occupies its steam position at maximum flow rate in which its annular bulge 46 punctually bridges the upper end 52b of the groove 52, in this case allowing rapid flow of water into the vaporization chamber 12.
- the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23 comprises at least one vertical slot 55, of which only one has been shown in FIG. 2, which is made on part of the height h of the well between the upper end 52b of the groove 52 and the upper edge 27 of the well 25, so that the plug 39, as a result of its helical displacement upwards in a predetermined stroke, comes to occupy a self-cleaning position ( Figure 5) in which the bulge 46 of the plug 39 uncovers the slot 55 while being partially 9 rests against the internal face of the vertical wall 56 of the well 25, so as to form a passage allowing an abundant flow of water in the vaporization chamber 12 with a view to completely purging the iron at the end of the re-passage ( see figure 5).
- the annular bulge 46 of the plug 39 has an outside diameter which is slightly greater than the inside diameter of the well 25 of the nozzle seal 23 made of flexible plastic, so that during the helical movement of the plug 39 in the well 25, the bulge 46 of the plug causes an elastic deformation by torsion, visible at 58 in FIG. 2, of the wall of the well 25 by describing a helical wave accompanying the movement of the plug 39; the bulge 46 of the plug 39 thus acts as a scraper making it possible to take off the tartar liable to be deposited on the inner face of the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23, between the narrowed region 54 and the upper outlet of the well 25.
- the anti-drip device 37 comprises an elastic membrane 60 shaped as a tulip which, advantageously, is molded in one piece with the nozzle joint 23 in flexible plastic material for the sake of great economy of manufacture, and which is held in place under the bottom wall 19 of the reservoir 17.
- This membrane 60 communicates with the chimney 21 of the reservoir 17 by a flow channel of water 62 delimited by a portion common to the membrane 60 and to the joint 23 and by the external face of the bottom wall 19 of the reservoir 17.
- the elastic membrane 60 is constituted by a cup 64 (FIG. 1), the central region of which is formed by a vertical cylindrical sleeve forming a valve 66, of axis YY 'parallel to the axis XX' of the plug 39, of which the lower end 66a is applied to a bimetallic element 68 fixed to the vaporization chamber 12, and the upper end 66b of which cooperates with an opening 70 made in the bottom wall 19 of the reservoir 17.
- a cup 64 FIG. 1
- the central region of which is formed by a vertical cylindrical sleeve forming a valve 66, of axis YY 'parallel to the axis XX' of the plug 39, of which the lower end 66a is applied to a bimetallic element 68 fixed to the vaporization chamber 12, and the upper end 66b of which cooperates with an opening 70 made in the bottom wall 19 of the reservoir 17.
- the sleeve 66 is axially movable between a rest position in which the bimetallic element 68 is not activated and in which the upper end 66b of the sleeve 66 completely closes the opening 70, preventing any passage of water from the reservoir 17 towards the vaporization chamber 12 and thus corresponding to the dry position of the plug 39 (see FIG.
- the anti-drip device 37 also includes a 11 vertical cylindrical end piece 72, centered on the axis YY ', and fitted by its lower part in the sleeve 66, as well as a spiral return spring 74, also centered on the axis YY', and interposed between the upper part in the form of a head 75 of the end piece 72 and a boss 77 formed on the internal face of the upper wall 18 of the tank 17.
- This spring 74 essentially promotes the closing of the opening 70 of the water tank 17 by l 'upper end 66b of the sleeve 66 when the latter is resiliently returned from its active position to its rest position.
- the temperature of the sole 10 does not reach a value sufficient to excite the bimetallic element 68, so that the sleeve 66 remains in its rest position in which the opening 70 of the reservoir 17 is closed by the upper end of the sleeve 66, preventing the water from leaving the reservoir (FIG. 1).
- the user turns the knob 43 so as to move the plug 39 helically downwards, by action of the cam 48 on the ramp 50, to bring it into its dry position, such as illustrated in FIG. 1, in which the annular bulge 46 of the plug 39 comes to rest on the narrowed part forming a seat 54 of the well 25 of the nozzle joint 23, thus completely closing off the well 25 of the nozzle joint.
- the user turns the knob 43 so as to move the plug 39 helically, still by the action of the cam 48 on the ramp 50, movement during which the bulge annu- 12 area 46 of the plug 39, by elastic deformation of the wall of the well 25, loosens the tartar possibly deposited on the inner face of the well 25, to bring the plug 39 to its vapor position, as illustrated in FIG. 3, in which the annular bulge 46 of the plug 39 bridges in a punctual manner the lower end 52a of the groove 52.
- the bimetallic element 68 When the temperature of the sole 10 reaches a sufficient value, the bimetallic element 68 is excited and acts on the sleeve 66, which moves axially upwards, against the return spring 74, to come to occupy its active position in which it discovers the opening 70 of the reservoir 17.
- the water leaving the reservoir 17 arrives in the chimney 21 , at the same level as in the reservoir, after passing through the channel 62, then punctually crosses the groove 52 at its lower end 52a and, consequently, flows very regularly drop by drop in the vaporization chamber 12 (see Figure 3). This injection causes the desired vapor emission, through the holes 16 of the ironing plate 14.
