Abstract
A starter motor is reversely rotated at an engine start to reversely rotate a crankshaft and bring a piston back into an exhaust stroke temporarily, and later the starter motor is forwardly rotated to start the engine from a status in which the piston is in an exhaust stroke. The starter motor is reversely rotated for a reverse energizing time t1 and then the crankshaft is inertia-rotated for an energizing stop time t2 to position the piston in an exhaust stroke. The reverse energizing time t1 and the energizing stop time t2 are set by a reverse energizing time map and an energizing stop time map, or are properly feedback-controlled based on a motor rotation speed, a speed change rate and a rotary angle calculated from a commutation position pulse signal from the starter motor. The above arrangement can accumulate a forward-direction inertia energy in a crankshaft rotation system in both suction and exhaust strokes to thereby use the inertia energy and a rotation energy of the starter motor in getting over a piston's compression stroke and to realize a compact, low-cost starter motor.
