Abstract

A multi-layer coating system comprising a first pigmented layer on the substrate and a second unpigmented layer, in which the second layer consists entirely or partly of an unpigmented soft-feel varnish.

Description

The present invention relates to a multi-layer coating with softfeel effect and their use.

The term soft-feel varnishes are understood as those varnishes that are characterized by a special feel (grip). The softfeel effect is based essentially on a combination of braking and sliding action. As a result, when touching a soft-feel lacquer-coated object, one gets the impression of touching a leather-like or also velvet-like object, independently of the actual feeling of touch of the substrate.

Soft-feeling paints are used in particular for the coating of plastics and for automotive interior painting.

The EP-0 669 352 B1 describes Softfeelinglacke polyester / polyurethane-based. All examples disclose a soft-feel varnish that also contains the pigment. An application of this Softfeelinglacks on a pigmented coating is not mentioned.

A particular problem of the previously known Softfeelinglacke is their adhesion to various substrates. Due to the rubber-elastic properties of a Softfeelinglacks show such coatings on critical substrates (eg on plastic surfaces) a worse adhesion, than comparable paints without soft feeling effect.
In the field of plastic painting, it is therefore very often necessary to use adhesion promoters in order to achieve acceptable adhesion in this way.

The object of the present invention is to provide a pigmented finish with a soft feel effect and the use thereof, wherein in particular the adhesion and the soft feel effect are improved compared with the known soft feel lacquers of the prior art.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by a multicoat system consisting of a first layer of color on the substrate and another layer of unpigmented second layer above the first layer, the second layer being wholly or partially obtainable from an unpigmented soft-feel finish.

In principle, the first coloring layer may be any layer obtainable by a crosslinking or curing process of a pigmented coating composition based on organic solvents, water or powder.

Particularly preferred for the preparation of the first, coloring layer are those paints which are used as so-called "basecoats" for the multi-layer coating of Automobilrohkarosserien.
This multi-layer coating of automobiles generally consists of four different layers (electrocoating layer, surfacer layer, basecoat layer and clearcoat layer).
It is the task of the basecoat layer to give the body the desired color and to provide a well-defined adhesion to the filler layer. The latter property is particularly important for the stone chip resistance of a car paint.

A preferred embodiment of the invention is the use of a water-based pigmented lacquer to form the first coloring layer. In particular, against the background that for the painting of plastics in the automotive industry mostly only solvent-based basecoats are used, a significant reduction of the solvent emissions, especially in coatings on plastic substrates, is possible with this embodiment.
It is advantageous when using a coloring paint on Wasserbais a short intermediate drying (eg 5 minutes at 60 ° C) before application of the unpigmented soft-feeling paint.

The dry layer thickness has no decisive influence on the properties of the multicoat system according to the invention; it is usually in a range between 12 and 40 .mu.m.

To produce the second, unpigmented layer, it is possible to use any lacquer which contains at least one binder which, due to its special chemical and physical properties, imparts the rubber-elastic properties necessary for the soft-feeling effect to this layer. Such binders are known per se and are already used for the production of pigmented soft-feel coatings. The amount of this binder is usually in a range between 25 and 65 wt .-%, based on the solids content.
The term "unpigmented" is understood to mean those coatings or coatings which contain no coloring pigments. However, the term "coloring pigments" does not mean matting agents which usually contain phyllosilicates or waxes.

Particularly suitable binders imparting soft feel properties to the second layer are those polyester / polyurethane based binders. These binders are detailed in the European Patent 0 669 352 described and sold by Bayer AG under the tradename Bayhydrol ®.

The soft-feel multi-layer coating according to the invention shows a significantly improved feel compared to the pigmented soft-feel coatings of the prior art.

Decisive for the improved soft feel properties of the multicoat system according to the invention is the separation of binders which are responsible for the actual soft feel effect and the coloring pigment (s).

The dry layer thickness of the second layer is usually in a range between 15 to 60 microns.
In general, the thicker the dry film thickness, the more pronounced the soft feel effect becomes.

Another embodiment of the invention is the use of a matting agent in the second, unpigmented layer. This causes an increase in the braking effect of the finished paint layer. In this way it is possible to adjust the exact braking and sliding action of the multicoat system according to the invention.

Die folgenden Beispiele dienen der Erläuterung der Erfindung:More preferably, the multicoat system according to the invention is suitable for the coating of plastic surfaces, in particular of parts of the automobile interior trim. In particular, for the latter area is of particular advantage that parts of the interior linings can be coated with the same paint and the same devices as plastic attachments (such as bumpers). The following examples serve to illustrate the invention:

The finished coatings are tested according to the tests specified in Table 1 for adhesion, climatic resistance, abrasion resistance and care agent resistance.
The abrasion resistance is examined with a Crockmeter with a linen cloth without load both dry and with ethanol.
The care product resistance is examined according to the Mercedes Benz specification DBL 7384, according to which various test solutions (plastic cleaner, tar remover, window cleaner, stain remover) are applied to a square felt (from the company Empa, St. Gallen, Switzerland) with an area of 2.25 cm 2 , The so well soaked felt is reciprocated under a mass of 332 g on the test surface by means of a device (test track: 30 to 50 mm). It should be completed in 2 minutes 170 double strokes. Thereafter, the test solutions are rinsed with demineralized water. The remaining surface is assessed. <b> Table 1 </ b> example Comparative example Haptics / Soft Feel Effect * 1 3 film optics iO iO Adhesion to Bayblend T 85 cross-hatching according to DIN 53151 with adhesive tape tear-off GT 0 GT 1 Climatic test according to DIN 50017 (10 d, 40 ° C, 95% rel.F. matching after 1 h regeneration time) Optics: OK liability GT 0 Optics: OK liability GT 1-2 Crockmeter (linen towel dry / ethanol without load) 100/10 100/8 Care product resistance DBL 7384 (MB specification) No abrasion visible on the board.
