Description

The present invention relates to a flashing arrangement for a roof penetrating building construction, said arrangement comprising a rail member adapted to be connected with a member of a frame structure for the building construction to extend, when mounted, substantially along the entire length thereof, and a deformable skirt member which at an edge portion thereof positioned, when mounted, at a distance from the frame member is connected with an edge portion of the rail member and adapted to be brought into abutment with the surrounding roofing.
It may occur, in particular during mounting of flashing arrangements of this type, in which the deformable skirt member is adapted to the shape of the surrounding roofing, but also when the flashing arrangement has been mounted during particularly adverse weather conditions, that the skirt member is deformed in such a way that it looses some of its inherent rigidity, which on the other hand may entail that the skirt member at least partially eases from the roofing. In addition to the disturbing sound which is generated when the skirt member beats against the roofing, there is also a risk of reduced sealing properties in the flashing arrangement, and at worst the skirt member may completely come loose.
In DK published specification DK-B-151112 it has in order to support the skirt member been proposed to place a resilient, adhesive strip of material in the joining between the skirt member and the rail member. It may, however, happen on account of incautious handling of the arrangement during the mounting that the plastic strip of material comes loose in spite of its adhesiveness, at least locally, which means that there will be a subsequent risk that water may penetrate into the subjacent roofing. This effect is enhanced thereby that the rail member itself is normally made somewhat resilient in view of keeping the skirt member in abutment against the roofing.
On this background it is the object of the invention to provide a flashing arrangement, in which the possibility of the rail member to move downwards during the adaptation of the skirt member to the roofing is limited, and at the same time an increased safety is provided to prevent the skirt from coming loose from the roofing and at worst easing itself from the remaining part of the flashing arrangement.
This object is met by a flashing arrangement which is characterized in that the arrangement comprises a supporting means to be positioned between the frame member and the joining between the skirt member and the rail member.
The supporting means has the effect that the joining between the rail member and the skirt member gets a substantially fixed positioning relative to the frame member and the roofing, which brings about a most stable connection and furthermore makes the mounting of the flashing arrangement simple.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the supporting means is designed as a sheet member having substantially rectangular basic form, a first longitudinal side thereof being adapted to be releasably connected with the frame member and a second longitudinal side thereof being connected with said joining, which ensures an optimal stability in combination with an easy and cheap manufacture.
An embodiment applicable in connection with a flashing arrangement, in which said joining is a rabbet joining between bent portions of the rail member and the skirt member, is characterized in that the sheet member having an edge portion at the second longitudinal side is slid-into the opening of the rabbet joining which, when mounted, is facing the frame member.
Other embodiments are described in the remaining, dependent claims.
The invention will be explained in detail by way of example in the following with reference to the schematic drawings, in which
  • Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of an embodiment of a flashing arrangement according to the invention, and
  • Figs 2, 2a and 2b show plane views of different details in variations of the arrangement according to the invention.
  • The drawing shows a bottom member 1 of a frame structure for a roof penetrating building structure, which in the embodiment shown is a skylight window, but which might also be a chimney, a fire wall, an air shaft or the like.
The roof structure itself is depicted by a rafter 2 extending in the direction of the roof pitch, said rafter having battens 3 extending perpendicularly thereto (only one batten is shown) and carrying the roofing (not shown) , which may for instance be tiles or other types of corrugated roofing.
The flashing arrangement comprises a rail member 4, which through a bent portion 5 is connected with the bottom member 1 of the frame and which extends across substantially the entire length thereof.
The rail member 4 extends from the bent portion 5 in an arc-shaped course downwards to an opposite edge portion, in which the rail member 4 is bent downwards for the formation of a rabbet canal 6 having an opening facing the frame bottom member 1.
An upwardly bent edge portion 7 of a skirt member 8 engages the rabbet canal for the formation of a rabbet joining. The skirt member 8 is made from a deformable roof flashing material of a type known per se, for instance as described in WO 95/28536, and is made as a rectangular piece with a length substantially equal to that of the rail member, and a width, which is so large that it provides a sufficient abutment surface against the roofing.
Prior to the bending of the edge portion a band or a strip 9 of a resilient and adhesive material is as described in the above DK published specification no. 151112 placed on the skirt member 8, said strip serving for securing and additional sealing of the joining, and for preventing the material of the skirt member from being completely compressed during the finishing compression of the rabbet joining.
With a view to securing the rabbet joining at a certain distance from the frame bottom member 1 and the roofing (not shown), a supporting means in the form of a sheet member 10 is placed between the frame bottom member 1 and the rabbet joining. As most clearly shown in Fig. 2, the sheet member 10 has a substantially rectangular basic form with a first longitudinal side 11 for connection with the frame bottom member 1 and a second longitudinal side 12 connected with the rabbet joining.
At the first longitudinal side 11 the sheet member 10 is provided with a bent flange portion 13 such that the supporting means becomes substantially L-shaped as will be seen from the sectional view in Fig. 1. In addition to increasing the stability of the sheet member 10, the bent flange portion 13 ensures a good securing to the frame bottom member 1. This securing can be further improved by providing the frame bottom member 1 with a channel-like recess 14 for receiving the flange portion 13 of the L-shaped sheet member 10. In an embodiment not shown the flange portion 13 of the L-shaped sheet member 10 may be nailed or fastened in another manner to the frame bottom member 1, whereas the second longitudinal side 12 is secured to the rabbet joining by adhesion at the mounting of the remaining part of the flashing arrangement.
The sheet member 10 is in the embodiment shown connected with the joining between the skirt member 8 and the rail member 4 by an edge portion 15 thereof at the second longitudinal side 12 being slid into the rabbet channel 6 of the rabbet joining, said rabbet channel being open towards the frame bottom member 1. The edge portion 15 can with a view to improved securing to the joining be provided with an adhesive.
As shown in the plane view in Fig. 2 the sheet member 10 may with a view to saving material and weight at its first longitudinal side 11 be provided with a substantially rectangular, centrally positioned recess 16. The sheet member 10 may have a corresponding recess at the opposite, second longitudinal side 12, such that the supporting means becomes substantially H-shaped. Alternatively, a recess corresponding to the recess 16 may be provided at the second longitudinal side 12. It is also possible to design several smaller recesses such that one and/or the other side of the sheet member 10 gets a comb-like appearance with several teeth (Fig. 2a). The size of the recess or recesses is chosen such that the sheet member 10 preferably becomes stable, and at the same time an adequate abutment surface against the rabbet joining and the frame bottom member, respectively, is ensured. Instead of one continuous sheet member it is, however, possible to use several shorter sheet members 10' (Fig. 2b).
Though the flashing arrangement according to the invention has been described above exclusively in connection with the bottom member of a frame structure for a roof penetrating structure, it is apparent that it will likewise be applicable at the side members and/or the top member of such frame structures.
Likewise, the arrangement can be used also in connection with other types of joining between a skirt member and a rail member than the rabbet joining shown, and the rail member may have a different course than the arc-shaped course shown.
