Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an electrical connector used for connecting to the end of an insulated wire and, specifically, to an improved housing design and a terminal design for such an electrical connector.
  • Known electrical connectors which connect to the end of an insulted wire for connection to another connector element typically comprise an insulative housing including terminal receiving passages and terminals inserted into the terminal receiving passages. Each terminal receiving passage is provided with a locking lance adapted to be engaged with an engaging aperture of a respective terminal.
  • the insulative housing further includes a terminal retainer pivotally mounted on a side wall thereof and adapted for movement between an open and a closed position wherein in the closed position, the retainer is engaged with engaging projections of the terminals to prevent withdrawal of the terminals and, in the open position, the terminals are inserted into the terminal receiving passages such that the engaging aperture of each terminals engages a corresponding lance.
  • the engaging projection of the respective terminals must be of sufficient strength to withhold all forces imparted thereto.
  • known electrical terminals have adequate thickness to yield the strength necessary to provide such engagement, as electrical connectors become miniaturized, the terminals are also downsized and the sheet metal forming the terminals becomes thinner, ultimately threatening the strength and function of the terminal/retainer engagement.
  • the present invention is directed to solving the problems set forth above. Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide an electrical connector for connecting to the end of an insulated wire, which connector includes a "use-friendly" terminal retainers and which assures the engagement between the retainers and engaging projections of the terminals.
  • the present invention contemplates an electrical connector including a housing having a terminal retainer, wherein the retainer is provided with tool insertion holes, and further including terminals having an engaging projection reinforced by a bead.
  • an electrical connector comprises:
  • an electrical connector comprises:
  • the opening and closing structure of the retainer is obvious to an end user at first sight, thereby facilitating the handling of the connector.
  • the engaging projection of each terminal is reinforced by a reinforcement bead, even if the sheet metal forming the terminals is thin due to miniaturization of the connector, the strength of the engaging projection is reinforced to firmly engage the retainer, thereby resist withdrawal forces on the terminals.
  • the reversed tapered edge serves to pull the retainer toward the terminal. Therefore, the retainer is prevented from being unintentionally opened, and the engagement between the terminal and the retainer is maintained.
  • FIG. 1 is an illustration of a section of the preferred embodiment of an electrical connector for connecting to the end of an insulated wire.
  • the electrical connector comprises an insulative housing 1 and a plurality of terminals 2 adapted to be crimped or otherwise terminated to the insulated wires 16.
  • the insulative housing 1 is molded of insulative plastic into such a configuration as shown in Figs. 2 to 5 and includes a plurality of terminal receiving passages 3 arranged in two rows in parallel between a front end 1a and a rear end 1b.
  • a terminal retainer 4 is formed on outside surfaces 1c and 1d of insulative housing 1 for pivotal movement between an open and a closed position by integrally molded hinges 5 as indicated by arrow 6.
  • Each terminal retainer 4 is adapted to correspond to one row of terminal receiving passages 3 so that each of said retainers is engaged with a plurality of said terminals inserted into each row of said terminal receiving passages.
  • Rectangular-shaped tool insertion holes 7 are formed in the center of retainers 4 as shown in Figures 1 through 6 and are adapted to receive an appropriate tool such as a screwdriver to move the retainer between its open and closed positions.
  • each terminal receiving passage 3 a cantilevered locking lance 8 is provided therein toward the front end 1a of the insulative housing. A tip end 8a of the lance 8 projects into the respective terminal receiving passage.
  • terminals 2 are stamped and formed of sheet metal.
  • the right side is a tip end
  • the left side is a rear end.
  • a generally rectangular socket 9 is provided at the tip end of terminal 2.
  • a generally U-shaped barrel 10 is provided for crimping to the exposed wire portion of the insulated wire, and a generally U-shaped strain relief 11 is provided for fitting on the insulation portion of the insulated wire.
  • a bottom wall 9a of socket 9 is partially opened to define an engaging aperture 12 for receiving a respective tip end 8a of lance 8 provided within a respective terminal receiving passage 3 ( Figure 1).
  • An intermediate portion of terminal 2 between socket 9 and barrel 10 is generally U-shaped in cross-section.
  • Engaging projection 13 projects from a portion of a side wall of the intermediate portion.
  • Engaging projection 13 is provided with a reinforcement bead 14 which extends in a direction transverse of terminal 2 (that is, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of terminal 2) to reinforce the strength thereof.
  • a side edge on the rear end of engaging projection 13 serves as an engaging edge for retainer 4 and includes at a rear end thereof a reversed tapered edge 15, as shown in Figure 9, which extends perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of terminal 2.
  • tip end 8a of lance 8 opposes engaging aperture 12 formed in the bottom wall of the respective socket 9, and lance 8 returns to its undeflected state whereat tip end 8a projects into engaging aperture 12 to primarily engage with the respective terminal 2.
  • retainers 4 are moved to the open position to release the engagement between the retainers and engaging projections 13.
  • an appropriate tool such as a screwdriver is inserted from front end 1a of insulative housing 1 through insertion hole 7 and into a terminal receiving passage 3 to release the engagement between lance 8 and engaging aperture 12.
  • one or more terminals can be withdrawn via insulated wires 16. Since tool insertion holes 7 are formed in retainers 4, a user can quickly understand the opening and closing structure of retainers 4, thereby facilitating servicing of the connectors and otherwise move the retainer between its open and closed positions easily.
