Definitions

  • the present invention relates to tank tubes adapted to contain animal semen and intended for artificial insemination, and more particularly to catheters for the artificial insemination of birds, in particular turkeys.
  • Such catheters are well known; generally of plastic, their length is of the order of ten centimeters, their outer diameter is of the order of four millimeters and their internal diameter of the order of 3.3 millimeters throughout the tube, the thickness of the wall of the tube being generally 0.35 millimeters.
  • catheters are of course adapted to the morphology of turkeys; moreover, in the first place, they are intended to be used only once, to avoid any contamination: they are therefore designed so as to contain only one dose of seed; second, to simplify handling, the seed is held in place in the tube by capillarity, given the viscosity of the seed; third, they are suitable for filling devices or machines, and devices or spray guns designed to prevent hand contact with the catheters.
  • the object of the present invention is to solve this problem in a simple and inexpensive way and to propose a new catheter presenting all the advantages of the old, thanks to the maintenance of its general dimensions allowing it to be adapted to the morphology, in particular of turkeys. , to contain only a single dose of seed, and to be compatible with existing devices for filling and emptying, while retaining the seed by capillarity although it is more diluted than in the past.
  • the invention is based on the finding that, on the one hand, it is easy to reduce the inner diameter of a plastic tube obtained by extrusion by up to two-thirds or even three-quarters of the inner diameter of said tube by simple cold forming at the exit of the extruder, and, secondly, such a reduction is sufficient to solve the above problem of a catheter for the artificial insemination of birds, in particular turkeys containing diluted semen.
  • a method for producing a catheter, consisting of a plastic tube, for the artificial insemination of birds, especially turkeys, in which the tube is obtained by extrusion is characterized by the fact that that, after the extrusion, each end of the tube is shaped cold so that the inside diameter of the tube at its ends is reduced to a value between two thirds and three quarters of the inside diameter of the tube , whereby each said end retains in the tube of the diluted seed having a viscosity close to that of water.
  • each end of the tube is shaped cold.
  • the invention also relates to a catheter for the artificial insemination of birds, in particular turkeys, consisting of an extruded plastic tube, obtainable by the process which has just been described, characterized in that that each end of the tube is shaped so that the inside diameter of the tube at its ends is reduced to a value between two thirds and three quarters of the inside diameter of the tube, whereby each said end retains in the tube of the diluted seed having a viscosity close to that of water.
  • the plastic material constituting the tube is polyvinyl chloride.
  • Other thermoplastic materials may be suitable, for example polyethylene terephthalate glycol.
  • each of the ends has a hem obtained by turning the end portion of each end inwardly.
  • the outer diameter of the tube is of the order of 4 millimeters and its thickness of the order of 0.35 millimeters.
  • the inverted portion of the hem extends within the tube for a length of between about three and six times the thickness of the tube; the cylindrical wall of the hem which faces the inner wall of the tube is pressed against it; alternatively, the cylindrical wall of the hem which faces the inner wall of the tube is at a radial distance therefrom at most equal to seven tenths of the thickness of the tube; advantageously, the cylindrical wall of the hem which faces the inner wall of the tube terminates in a frustoconical portion flaring towards the inside of the tube.
  • each of the ends has a generally transverse rim.
  • the figure 1 represents in partial section, a catheter according to the invention intended in particular for the artificial insemination of turkeys.
  • a catheter consists generally of a tube 10 of plastic material, advantageously polyvinyl chloride, having a length of the order of 10 centimeters, an outside diameter 21 of the order of 4.1 millimeters, and a thickness of 22 of the order of 0.35 millimeters, so an inner diameter 23 of the order of 3.4 millimeters.
  • the diameter 23 extends over the entire length of the tube, which is then 103.5 millimeters, including its ends 11 whose edges are optionally leveled to avoid injuring the turkeys; such a catheter is suitable for animal semen of a given viscosity, so that it is retained in the tube 10 by simple capillarity; thus, it is not necessary for the transport and / or manipulation of the catheters to provide a plug at the ends 11 of the tube 10.
  • the catheter according to the invention is designed to contain, under the same conditions, a diluted animal semen whose viscosity is reduced.
  • the ends 11 of the tube 10 are shaped so that the inside diameter 24 of the tube 10 at its ends 11 is reduced by an amount such that said seed is retained by capillarity and the forming of these ends 11 is realized in a simple and inexpensive way.
  • the reduction in diameter is such that the outside diameter 24 of the tube 10 at its ends 11 is reduced to a value between two thirds and three quarters of the inside diameter 23 of the tube 10.
  • the inside diameter 24 of the ends 11 is of the order of 2.2 to 2.5 millimeters.
  • the diameter reduction is achieved by a simple cold forming operation; the tube 10 being obtained by extrusion, the cold forming takes place at the outlet of the extruder.
  • each of the ends 11 has a hem 12 obtained by turning the end portion of each end 11 inwards; the length of the return forming the hem 12 is of the order of three to six times the thickness of the tube 10, here from one millimeter to two millimeters; it will be appreciated that the embodiment of the hem 12 leads to a rounded end edge 18, which avoids injuring the animal during the artificial insemination operation; the total length of the catheter is therefore reduced to a value of the order of 101.5 millimeters; the hems 12 of the two ends 11 are advantageously made at the same time, the tube 10 being placed between two corners to be crimped; it will be understood therefore that these two hems 12 of the same tube 10 may not extend over lengths rigorously equal.
  • cylindrical wall 13 of the hem 12 which faces the inner wall 14 of the tube 10 is close to it, or pressed against it, extending axially.
  • the cylindrical wall 13 of the hem 12 which faces the inner wall 14 of the tube 10 is at a radial distance 26 therefrom; this radial distance is weak; it is at most equal to 0.25 millimeters; taking into account the viscosity, even diluted, the seed, it can not enter the annular space defined by these facing walls 13 and 14, and there is no loss of seed.
  • the cylindrical wall 13 of the hem 12 which faces the inner wall 14 of the tube 10 terminates in a frustoconical portion 15 flaring towards the inside of the tube.
  • the inner diameter reduction to the right of the ends 11 is obtained by a generally transverse rim 16 with rounded edges.
