Definitions
- the present invention relates to an oil damper system for motorcycles or cars and in particular for vehicles used either for competitions or in all terrain. It is known from American patent application 4,958,706, an oil damper comprising a movable piston in a cylinder which, during its compression stroke, displaces the oil contained in a chamber towards, on the one hand a reservoir and, d 'secondly a second chamber disposed on the other side of the piston. The oil path to the second chamber located on the other side of the piston passes through valves for adjusting the rebound characteristics of the shock absorber. The pressure of the oil expelled into the tank is compensated by a pocket containing a pressurized gas and playing, in a way, the role equivalent to the spring of the spring shock absorbers of the prior art.
- Access to the reservoir chamber is limited by, on the one hand, an adjustable system with a screw for adjusting the compression ratio, and, on the other hand, a valve for protection against excessive pressure, calibrated to resist pressure maximum of 140 kg / cm 2 approximately (2000 psi).
- the present invention relates to an oil tank which can be used with such a type of shock absorber or with other types of simpler or more complex shock absorbers. Indeed, it was found that in these shock absorber systems, provision was always made on the shock absorber, between on the one hand the ring (11) disposed at the end of the rod (10) of the piston adjacent to the ring for fixing (12) to the chassis of the vehicle and on the other hand the lower external surface (151) of the cylindrical body (15) constituting the compression chamber, an elastic element generally consisting of a rubber ring forming the stop of the shock absorber encountered under extreme operating conditions. In fact, the shock absorber being protected against excessively high pressures, the tank valve risks opening when the vehicle falls after a large jump and, in this case, the the only protection for the shock absorber is the elastic stop disposed between the cylinder (15) and the ring (11).
- This elastic stop has the drawback of generating uncontrollable rebound phenomena for the pilot which sometimes cause the vehicle to tumble forward.
- a first object of the invention is to propose a shock absorber system which makes it possible to eliminate these drawbacks while retaining the advantages and characteristics of oil shock absorbers.
- the oil damping system consisting of a piston mounted at the end of a movable rod, moving in a hollow cylindrical body by expelling the oil between the piston and the bottom of the hollow body of the shock absorber towards a deformable reserve chamber on the outside of which a pressurized gas is applied, the oil being evacuated towards the reserve chamber by at least two different orifices according to the displacement speeds of the piston is characterized in that the path of the oil passes through an intermediate chamber of determined volume and the orifices are arranged between the reserve chamber and the intermediate chamber, at least one of the orifices being closed by an adjustable non-return valve constituting a hydraulic brake adjustable so as to allow the oil to be evacuated only in the event that the pressure exerted by the piston on the oil is such that it exceeds the conditions laid down of the most extreme vehicle use.
- Another object of the invention is to propose a system which makes it possible to improve the response characteristics of the shock absorber during the compression phases.
- a second adjustable non-return valve is interposed between the intermediate chamber and the reserve chamber and adjusted for a range of speeds of displacement of the piston situated between the low speeds and the hydraulic brake speeds.
- a third orifice provided with an adjustable throttle allows oil to be discharged at low speeds from the intermediate chamber to the reserve chamber.
- the first and second valves comprise a screw body extending by a rod notched regularly over a determined height of its periphery and supporting on the end of the rod means for fixing a retaining cap, between this last and the notched part of a sealing washer and of an elastic means pressing with a determined force the sealing washer on the seat of the respective orifice associated with the valve.
- the notched part cooperates with a ball urged by elastic means to constitute a setting stop notch.
- the intermediate chamber is constituted by an annular groove formed in a cylindrical ring intended to close the open end of the reservoir, said cylindrical ring being provided with holes passing through the ring and the annular groove, said holes comprising on the outside of the tank a thread for the screw body and means for sealing between the screw body and the bore.
- the elastic means pressing the sealing washer on the seat of the bore consist of a stack of several beleville washers mounted in opposition.
- the elastic means for the high-speed screw consist of a stack of beleville washers with a thickness of between 0.20 mm and 0.45 mm.
- FIG. 1 represents a schematic view of the principle of the invention
- FIG. 2A represents a detail view and in partial section of the adjustable valves
- FIG. 2B represents a top view of the notched part of the screw
- Figure 2C shows a bottom view of the tank closure ring
- FIG. 2D represents a side view of this ring
- Figure 2E shows a sectional view along the line passing through the two axes of symmetry of the two adjustable valves
- FIG. 3 represents the curve expressing the characteristics of force response as a function of the compression speed.
- the damping system consists of a hollow cylinder (15) in which a piston (13) moves, disposed at the end of a rod (10), the other end of which carries an eyelet (12) for fixing to the vehicle and , near this eyelet, a stop washer (11).
- the end of the cylinder (15) opposite the eyelet (12) also comprises an eyelet (14) for fixing to the vehicle.
- the rod will be subjected to compression or extension and, during the compression phases, the fluid between the piston (13) and the bottom of the chamber (15) close to the eyelet
- This reservoir (3) comprises a reserve chamber (4) delimited by a cylindrical piston (31) moving in the reservoir freely under the effect of the pressures of the fluid (4) and of a gas (5) introduced into the zone between the other side of the piston (31) and the bottom of the tank.
- This fluid is introduced in a known manner by a filling non-return valve (6).
- the seal between the gas and the fluid is ensured by an annular seal (310) disposed in a peripheral groove of the piston (31).
- the pipe (2) is connected to the reservoir by a nozzle (33), one end of which opens into an intermediate chamber (321) formed in a ring (32).
- This intermediate chamber (321) communicates with the oil reserve chamber (4) by three orifices (325, 322, 326), two of which are closed by a non-return valve and the third (322) provided with an adjustable throttle which can be more or less open.
- a needle screw (34) is disposed in the threaded hole of the ring (32). The needle (34) more or less closes the frustoconical orifice (322).
- This needle screw (34) has a seal (9) between the annular chamber (321) and the outer part of the ring (32).
- the needle screw can be replaced by any other equivalent means such as, for example, a calibrated slot.
- Each of the non-return valves is constituted identically to that shown in FIG. 2A.
- the valve is formed by a washer (354) pressing on the seat delimited by the cylindrical bore (3252) of diameter greater than the bore (3251) to form the seat of the valve.
- the bore (3251) has a threaded portion at its end opposite the seat. This hole (3251) opens to the outside of the ring (32) by a hole of larger diameter forming a shoulder (3253) with the threaded part.
- the valve (36) will include a ring (364), the hole (3262) forming the seat with the threaded hole (3261) and the shoulder (3263).
- Each sealing washer (354, 364) is mounted on a rod (3512, respectively 3612) having at its end a bore through which a pin (358, respectively 368) passes, securing the rod with a cap (359, respectively 369) whose section is substantially U-shaped and has in the central part of the U holes (3590) for passage of oil.
- Under the hat (359, 369) are arranged beleville washers (355a, 355b, 356a, 356b) mounted two by two in opposition (365a, 365b; 366a, 366b).
- each notched ring (353, 363) comprises, regularly distributed over its periphery, notches (3531, 3631) constituting housings for a ball (8a, respectively 8b) biased by a spring (7a, respectively 7b) so that the ball (8a, respectively 8b) is received in the respective notch (3531, 3631) of the notched ring located opposite.
- the notched ring is made integral with the rod on which it is mounted by suitable means such as, for example, a solder.
- the rod is extended on the side of the head of the screw (351, respectively 361) by a threaded part (3513, respectively 3613) and the head of the screw has a widening in diameter in which is formed a groove allowing the establishment of 'a seal (352, respectively 362).
- Each of the screw heads has a groove (3511) for the first screw (35) and a cross groove (3611) for the second screw (36), as can be seen in Figure 2C.
- the pressure in the intermediate chamber increases and reaches the resistance force formed by the beleville washers (355, 356) of the first valve (35) which takes off the sealing washer (354) from its seat thus allowing the fluid to flow from the intermediate chamber (321) to the reserve chamber (4 ) by the annular space available between the notched crown (353) and the bore (3251).
- the first adjustable valve (35) will saturate and the pressure will continue to increase by being exerted on the second valve (36) constituting the hydraulic stop.
- This second valve (36) has beleville washers of greater thickness and the screw (361) is adjusted so that the washer (364) remains in abutment on its seat as long as the compression speed and the compression force have not reached point C of the curve (3640).
- the shock absorber therefore retains a response characteristic as a function of pressure and speed, which thus constitutes a hydraulic brake.
- the valve (364) opens and the oil flows to the reservoir through this valve.
- the thickness of the washers is adapted according to the valve and the application. Thus on motorcycle or 4x4 car shock absorbers, washers with a thickness of 0.45 mm can be fitted for the high speed screw and 0.65 mm for the stop screw or hydraulic brake.
- thicknesses for example 0.20 mm for the high speed screw and 0.45 mm for the stop screw or hydraulic brake. These thicknesses are determined by a person skilled in the art as a function of the loads supported by each damper and of the type of use and of the compression response curve that is desired.
- the valve (64) was adjusted to the same value as that of point C.
- point C of the hydraulic brake screw can be adjusted to a higher or lower value.
- the shock absorber of the invention has the advantage of being able to adapt to the forces supported by the shock absorber according to its use. In fact, when the shock absorber is used on a motorcycle or on a car, the maximum compression force at which the hydraulic brake effect must be able to exert will vary depending on the type of vehicle.
- a first advantage of the invention is therefore to allow, with a shock absorber of the same type, to adapt it as well to a motorcycle as to a car as well as to adapt it to the road conditions that the vehicle will encounter by placing more or the lower the point C.
- Another advantage consists in the fact that for the same given compression force, less than the maximum acceptable force, the damper, according to the invention, will react with a different compression and displacement speed of the actuator rod over a speed range between point D and point C.
- the compression speed zone between points D 'and C on the curve (8) are in fact the compression speeds for which the traditional rubber stop comes into play and in which the vehicle is subjected to the rebound phenomenon, that we mentioned at the beginning of the description.
- the possibilities of displacement of points A and B by the low-speed (34) and high-speed (35) adjustment screws also makes it possible to better adapt the response curve of the shock absorber according to the invention, whatever the type. of land encountered.
- the comfort of the vehicle and its traction will be much less good on the corrugated iron for a low travel speed.
- the part of the curve (340) corresponds to small amplitude displacements
- the part (350, 3640) corresponds to large amplitude displacements to generate the vehicle on board, for example, a pothole.
