Abstract
A process is disclosed for the decontamination of wastes or residues from residential and industrial areas, e.g. industrial sludges. The metal-containing materials are mixed with activated sludge, e.g. sewage sludge, and the reaction product undergoes further processing, the metal component being recyclable.
Description
Verfahren zur biologischen Dekontaminierung v o n verunreinigtem GutProcess for the biological decontamination of contaminated goods
The invention is based on a method for biological decontamination according to the preamble of the main claim and the preamble of claim 3.
In a known generic method of this type (EP 0 486 578), the contaminated material is cleaned and processed by means of microorganisms, the microorganisms originating from activated sludge of anaerobic and aerobic type and made available by mixing the contaminated material with this activated sludge and, if necessary is treated further. The microorganisms break down the impurities and, if necessary, are increased by added nutrients, supported by stirring, water supply and last but not least aeration. This known method is used primarily in soils contaminated with petroleum products. In such soils there can be some toxic metal compounds which can be in a form accessible to microorganisms and can be bound by the known method. However, since the metals remain in the landfill area of the goods, they are suitable for entering into new toxic compounds. In a related further development of the method (DE-OS 4339875), the consistency of the mixture of contaminated material and sewage sludge is chosen so that it maintains the shape. In any case, the very broad spectrum of waste or residual materials resulting from sewage sludge or the like activated sludge contains a microorganism flora which can process almost all biodegradable contaminants. The contaminated goods are usually soils contaminated with petroleum products. Others, for example soils contaminated with heavy metals, have to be brought to special landfills, similar to mixed-contaminated soils of industrial or settlement areas, which is not only expensive, but also represents a postponement of the problem of treating such soils.
In another known method (DE-OS 41 17 515), the fine grain soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants are obtained in a very complex manner with biologically convertible acids and acid mixtures, and for example nitric acid.
The method according to the invention or the device according to the invention with the characterizing features of the main claim or claim 3 has the advantage that whenever there are biodegradable substances in the soils or residues from settlement areas and industrial areas, for example petroleum-containing substances, these can be broken down via the microorganisms in the sewage sludge, whereby it has been found that other organic pollutants are also processed by the microorganisms. It was surprisingly found that in many apparently non-decontaminable substances by removing the Petroleum product compositions the residual material is no longer regarded as contaminated despite the presence of metals, for example metal chips and the like. Existing metal is also removed from such a residual material before it enters into compounds with other substances, which in turn is considered to be toxic and would then have to be stored in special landfills. The inventive method saves high costs for hazardous waste landfills.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, industrial grinding sludge serves as the contaminated material. Such grinding sludges are usually highly oil-containing, so that after the oil has been removed via the microorganisms, substances remain which in the case are easy to dispose of or can be recycled. These primarily include the metals separated from oil compounds.
).According to the advantageous embodiment of the invention relating to a device, the treatment can take place in a closed system which contains an agitator, pump and air supply devices and which are preceded by separating, sorting and classifying devices (for example flotation, Me separator, belts, etc.) .
All the features that can be gathered from the description, the claims and the drawing can be essential to the invention both individually and in any combination with one another.
