Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to mast arm assembly for supporting an exterior light fixture. More particularly, the present invention relates to an improved mast arm for supporting an exterior light to a mounting pole.
- light fixtures In the field of exterior lighting, light fixtures are typically supported to a mounting post or pole which suspends the fixture above the area which is to be illuminated. In outdoor environments the light fixture may be subjected to various adverse conditions. Most prevalent among the adverse conditions is the effect of weather such as wind and rain on the light fixture. Accordingly, the supporting structure which secures the light fixture to a stationary mounting pole must be able to withstand the load of the light fixture during high winds and other adverse conditions.
- mast arms which serve to support the exterior light fixture to the mounting pole.
- These mast arms are generally elongate arcuate or angled tubular members which are secured at one end to the mounting pole and support the exterior light fixture at the other end.
- the mast arm is supported to the mounting pole by employing a wide variety of mounting hardware which is affixed to the mast arm and then may be secured to the mounting pole to secure the exterior light fixture in proper position.
- One technique to affix the mounting hardware to the mast arm is to weld bracket type mounting hardware to the tubular surface of the mast arm. The mounting hardware may then be secured to the mounting the pole.
- it is often difficult to securely weld mounting hardware to the tubular mast arm so as to maintain the secured positioning of the mounting hardware with respect to the mast arm under adverse load conditions.
- the present invention provides a mast arm assembly for supporting an electrical light fixture to a mounting pole.
- the assembly includes a tubular mast arm having a first end for supporting the fixture and opposed second end.
- the mast arm assembly further includes a first mounting bracket which is welded to the mast arm at an intermediate position between the ends thereof for temporary support of the mast arm to the mounting pole.
- a second mounting bracket is also welded to the mast arm adjacent the second end for permanently securing the mast arm to the mounting pole.
- the mast arm further includes a pair of diametrically opposed outwardly extending longitudinal ribs. The ribs provide weldment surfaces for welding of the first and second brackets to the mounting arm.
- the tubular mast arm is formed in a generally arcuate configuration having an inner radial extent and an outer radial extent. Furthermore, the tubular mast arm includes an elongate tubular wall. The wall is defined in cross section by continuous sides. The wall has a first side of a first thickness which corresponds to the inner radial extent of the mast arm and an opposed second wall side of second thickness greater than the first thickness which corresponds to the outer radial extent of the mast arm. The difference in the thickness between the inner and outer extents of the tubular mast arm allow the mast arm to support a greater load under adverse conditions.
- Figure 1 is a perspective showing of the mast arm assembly of the present invention supporting an exterior light fixture to a mounting pole.
- FIG 2 is a perspective showing of the mast arm assembly of Figure 1 with the exterior light fixture removed.
- Figure 3 is a end view of the lower portion of the mast arm assembly of Figure 1.
- mast arm assembly 10 of the present invention is shown in Figure 1.
- Mast arm assembly 10 supports an exterior light fixture 12 to a mounting post or pole 14.
- Lighting fixture 12 is of conventional construction and may be one of many types of exterior light fixtures which are used to illuminate streets, parking lots, driveways and other exterior areas.
- Pole 14 is also of conventional construction and is generally formed of wood.
- mounting pole 14 is shown to be generally cylindrical, however other shapes may also be employed.
- Mast arm assembly 10 which is also shown in Figure 2 with light fixture 12 removed, includes a generally tubular mast arm 16.
- Mast arm 16 generally extends in a curved or arcuate configuration.
- Tubular mast arm includes a first open upper end 18 and a second lower open end 20.
- This conduit may be used to run electrical conductors (not shown) for providing power to fixture 12.
- the generally curved configuration of tubular mast arm 16 provides that end 18 extends in a direction which is generally perpendicular to lower end 20. Such transition may be effected by a generally uniform curve or may be effected in a more segmented fashion, such as shown in the preferred embodiment in Figures 1 and 2.
- tubular mast arm 16 has a cross-sectional shape defining pair of opposed planar longitudinal side walls 24 and 26 and curved opposed upper and lower side walls 28 and 30. While the configuration shown herein is the preferred embodiment, any generally tubular configuration may be employed in accordance with the present invention.
- ribs 32 and 34 Extending from longitudinal side walls 24 and 26 along the length of tubular member 16 are a pair of outwardly directed elongate ribs 32 and 34. Each rib 32 and 34 follows the arcuate contour of tubular mast arm 16 and extends from one end 18 to the other end 20. Ribs 32 and 34 are located adjacent upper side wall 28 and extend generally perpendicularly from the respective longitudinal planar side walls 24 and 26. Ribs 32 and 34 are formed integral with tubular mast arm 16. It is contemplated further that mast arm 16 and ribs 32 and 34 may be formed together in an extrusion process.
- Mast arm assembly 10 further includes mounting hardware used to facilitate the mounting of mast arm 16 to mounting pole 14.
- Mast arm assembly 10 includes an intermediate mounting bracket 36 positionable at a central location along the tubular mast arm 16.
- Mounting bracket 36 has a first planar portion 36a and a second planar portion 36b which extends upwardly at a near right angle from first planar member 36a.
- First planar portion 36a includes an aperture 38 therethrough.
- Aperture 38 is generally configured in the shape of the cross-sectional shape of tubular mast arm 16.
- Aperture 38 includes a first major opening portion 38a which accommodates the main body of tubular mast arm 16.
- Aperture 38 also includes a pair of outwardly directed slots 38b which are configured to permit accommodation of ribs 32 and 34 of mast arm 16.
- the interfitting relationship between the ribs 32 and 34 within the slots 38b provide areas where intermediate bracket 36 may be welded to tubular mast arm 16.
- the ribs provide weldment surfaces which provide for the secure welding of the bracket 36 to tubular mast arm 16.
- Second planar portion 36b also includes an opening 39 therethrough, which functions as a hanger to enable the tubular mast arm to be hung from a support element 39a imbedded into pole 14 ( Figure 1).
- the support element 39a maybe a nail screw or hook attached to pole 14 which allows the mast arm assembly 10 to be hung from the pole in a temporary fashion until such time as permanent securement of the mast arm assembly 10 to the pole 14 is effected.
- the assembly further includes a lower bracket 40 positionable at the lower end 20 of mast arm 16.
- lower bracket 40 is generally an elongate member having opposed ends 42 and 44. Apertures 42a and 44a extend through ends 42 and 44 respectively. These apertures 42a or 44a are used to accommodate securement hardware such as a conventional nut and bolt assembly 45 ( Figure 1). However, other securement hardware may also be employed.
- Lower bracket 40 has a generally curved configuration so as to generally conform to the cross-sectional shape of mounting pole 14 to facilitate its securement thereto.
- a central portion of lower bracket 40 includes a pair of upwardly, extending flanges 46 and 48 which are spaced apart approximately the width of tubular mast arm 16.
- Flanges 46 and 48 include elongate flange grooves 46a and 48a respectively therethrough.
- Flange grooves 46a and 48a accommodate ribs 34 and 32 respectively of tubular mast arm 16 so as to support the mast arm to the lower bracket assembly.
- the interfitting of the slots 46a and 4Sa with respective ribs 34 and 32 provide secure weldment surfaces so as to weld the lower bracket 40 to the mast arm adjacent lower end 20. In this manner the lower bracket 40 is permanently secured to mast arm 16.
- the ribs 32 and 34 of mast arm 16 thus provide weldment surfaces for both intermediate bracket 36 as well as lower bracket 40. These weldment surfaces provide for more secure welding of the brackets to the tubular mast arm.
- Tubular mast arm 16 is formed so that upper side wall 28 has a wall thickness which is greater that the wall thickness of lower side wall 30.
- upper side wall 30 forms the outer curved surface of tubular mast arm 16 and as the lower side wall 30 forms the inner curved surface of tubular mast arm 16, the relative difference in thickness provides structural strength to the tubular mast arm when supporting a light fixture 12 as shown in Figure 1.
- upper side wall 28 has a wall thickness of 100 inches and lower side wall 30 has a wall thickness of.080 inches.
- the longitudinally extending ribs 32 and 34 also provide stiffness along the length of the mast arm reducing the tendency of the mast arm to deflect under load.
