Abstract

The loop is made by two sections (14,16) of line fitted closely together and joined by stitches (18). The stitches pass through the line sections in spirals (20A,22A) and are connected by linking threads (26,30). The stitches, made from synthetic fibres, are positioned asymmetrically when the line is not under tension to give an even distribution of mechanical stresses when the line is tensioned. The spiral stitches in the first section (14) of the line extend for a distance (L1) which is greater than the distance (L2) covered by the stitches in the second section. The linking threads between them are set at a progressively increasing angle along the stitched section.

Description

The invention relates to a sewn attachment loop for a dynamic rope having a circular section and a longitudinal elasticity, said loop comprising:
  • a first portion of rope applied and secured against a second portion of rope by elongated seam fastening means, the length of the first portion being shorter than the second extended portion,
  • a plurality of elementary turns of wire to constitute said seam and comprising a succession of sewing points joined together by connecting strands.

The tensioning of an elastic rope, in particular in the event of the user falling, causes a significant tensile force F2 at the level of the second extended portion of rope, said effort being greater than that F1 applied to the first portion of shorter rope. Part of the effort is taken up by the friction of the rope on the carabiner between the two portions of rope. The diagram in FIG. 8 illustrates the variation in the elongation as a function of the force, in which the elongation d2 on the second portion of rope is greater than the elongation d1 on the first portion of rope. This difference in elongation of the two portions of rope results in a non-uniform distribution of the mechanical stresses exerted on the stitching points and the connecting strands when the rope is in the stretched state. The breaking strength of such a fastener conventional sewing is limited.

A first object of the invention consists in improving the mechanical resistance of a sewn attachment loop for an elastic cord.

The attachment loop according to the invention is characterized in that the seam has an asymmetrical structure in the untensioned state, allowing a homogeneous distribution of mechanical stresses in the connecting strands when tensioning the loop in the stretched state.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the stitching points located along the first portion of rope extend in the untensioned state of the rope, according to a longitudinal staggering L1 greater than that L2 assigned to the stitching points of the second portion of cord, the variation in the staggering of said sewing points causing a progressive inclination of the connecting strands along the seam.

According to a second embodiment of the invention, the seam comprises a plurality of series of sewing stitches, each having the same number of sewing stitches, and a lateral spacing which varies from one series to another, the spacing the smallest being located near the loop, and the largest being positioned near the end of the first portion of rope.

A second object of the invention relates to the implementation of a method of manufacturing the sewn fastening loop.

It is possible to carry out a progressive sewing by varying the spacing distance of the sewing stitches on the first portion of rope, and keeping the same spacing distance for the sewing stitches of the second portion of rope.

Another possibility is to operate a straight seam using the following steps:
  • the first portion of cord is compressed in the longitudinal direction during the sewing operation,
  • the stitch spacing pitch is kept constant on each portion of cord during said operation,
  • the relaxation of the compressive force at the end of the sewing operation then causes the first portion of cord to relax, to obtain said asymmetrical structure in the untensioned state.

Other advantages and characteristics will emerge more clearly from the description which follows of different embodiments of the invention, given by way of nonlimiting examples, and represented in the appended drawings in which:

With reference to FIGS. 1 to 4, an attachment loop 10 of an elastic rope 12, in particular of circular section, is formed from a first portion of rope 14 applied and secured against a second portion of rope 16 by a extended seam 18. The first portion of rope 14 constitutes the terminal portion, which is shorter than the second portion of extended rope 16.

The elastic cord 12 is provided with a predetermined longitudinal elasticity, and in the event of the appearance of a tensile force, the component F2 of the tensile force exerted on the second portion of prolonged cord 16 is greater than the component F1 to which the shortest first portion of cord 14 is subjected. To avoid in the stretched state the harmful effects of an exaggerated differential elongation between the two adjacent portions of cord 14, 16, the seam 18 is produced according to a specific longitudinal configuration making use of a progressive distribution of the seam stitches.

The other portion of cord 16 is provided with the same number of sewing stitches 20B, 22B staggered over a distance L2. In the untensioned state of the cord, the distance L2 is less than the distance L1.

Les points de couture 20A,22A; 20B,22B de la couture 18 sont réunis entre eux par des brins de liaisons 26,30 disposés respectivement sur la face supérieure et la face inférieure de l'attache 10.Sewing stitches 20A, 22A; 20B, 22B of the seam 18 are joined together by connecting strands 26.30 arranged respectively on the upper face and the lower face of the fastener 10.

Dans l'état non tendu de repos de la couture 18 représenté à la figure 1, la variation des échelonnements L1 et L2 provoque une inclinaison progressive des brins de liaison 26, 30 en direction du bout de la première portion 14.In the non-stretched state of rest of the seam 18 shown in FIG. 1, the variation of the staggerings L1 and L2 causes a progressive inclination of the connecting strands 26, 30 in the direction of the end of the first portion 14.

Dans la figure 2, les points de couture 20A,22A de la première portion 14 se trouve alors en regard des points de couture 20B, 22B de la deuxième portion 16.When the rope 12 is loaded under the action of the tensile force, the second portion of rope 16 of the fastener 10 becomes longer than the first portion of rope 14. In FIG. 2, the points 20A, 22A of the first portion 14 is then opposite the stitching points 20B, 22B of the second portion 16.

In the stretched state shown in FIG. 3, the connecting strands 26 remain substantially parallel, so as to obtain a homogeneous distribution of the mechanical stresses in the seam 18, even if the force F2 applied to the second portion of rope 16 is greater at the force F1 on the first portion of rope 14. FIG. 8 illustrates the curves representative of the tensile force as a function of the elongations of the two sections of rope 14, 16, making it possible to obtain the same final length L1 + d1 and L2 + d2 for a force F2 greater than F1. The connecting strands 26, 30 of the seam 18 tilt slightly, but remain parallel to each other. The mechanical resistance to rupture is thus improved, which is particularly advantageous for safety when the attachment loop 10 is used in climbing, in particular on a rope, or a lanyard.

La corde relâchée (figure 6) reprend ensuite l'agencement des points évolutifs conforme à la figure 1.Instead of making a progressive seam sewn in the case of FIG. 1, it is also possible to make a straight seam 18 (FIG. 5) after prior compression of the first portion of cord 14 in the direction of the arrow F3. The end of the first portion of cord 14 is thus moved from position A to position B during the sewing operation, during which all the connecting strands 26, 30 extend parallel to each other in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal interface 32 between the two portions of cord 14, 16. All the sewing stitches are staggered at regular intervals over the distance L2. The relaxed rope (Figure 6) then resumes the arrangement of evolutionary points in accordance with Figure 1.

In FIG. 9, the elongation is zero during the manufacture of the seam. The first portion 14 is sewn in the compressed state (F3 negative) and the other portion of cord 16 is sewn effortlessly F0. In the stretched state of the rope, the force F2 is greater than F1, but the elongation d3 of the two portions of rope 14,16 is identical. This results in a homogeneous distribution of the stresses in the connecting strands 26, 30 inclined and parallel (FIG. 7).

Il est bien entendu possible de modifier la structure de la couture 18 en choisissant d'une manière appropriée le nombre et l'emplacement des points de couture sur chaque portion de corde 14, 16.It is of course possible to modify the structure of the seam 18 by appropriately choosing the number and the location of the stitches on each portion of cord 14, 16.

With reference to FIGS. 10 and 11, the loop 100 comprises a plurality of series A1, A2, A3 of sewing stitches partially superimposed between the two sections of rope 114,116. The difference in elongation of the two sewn portions is greater the greater the sewn length. The A1 series is the longest for a minimum spacing of the connecting strands. The A2 series is shorter than the A1 series, but has a greater spacing. The third A3 series is shorter than the A2 series, but with a greater gauge. This asymmetry between the stitches of the three superimposed series thus makes it possible to reduce the effective length of the seam.

The thread used for sewing 18, 118 is a textile thread based on synthetic fibers, and of great mechanical resistance. The elastic cord 12 is a classic commercial lifeline, used in the field of climbing or work of great heights to absorb energy in the event of a fall.

According to the seam 18 of FIGS. 1 to 7, the stitching points on each portion of rope extend along lines parallel to the longitudinal interface 32 of joining of the two portions of rope.
